POPLAR BLUFF POLICE TO HOST PREVIEW OF NEW DEPARTMENT FACILITY
The new Poplar Bluff Police Department facility is almost finished and members of the public will have a chance to see the facility this weekend.
The PBPD is hosting a preview of the facility from 11 am to 5 pm on Saturday, August 20th.
The facility is located at 911 North Shelby Road.
Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whiteley tells us that local and state leaders will also be in attendance.

FOOTBALL JAMBOREE TONIGHT IN DEXTER
We are a week away from the official start of the high school football season in Southeast Missouri which means it is time for the annual jamboree.
The Poplar Bluff Mules will be traveling east this year for the Dexter Jamboree. In addition to Dexter, they will also be joined by the Fredericktown Blackcats and the Caruthersville Tigers.
The kick off is scheduled for 6 pm tonight and every Poplar Bluff snap will be carried live on Today’s Talk KWOC 93.3 FM and 930 AM as well as on the KWOC Facebook page and River Radio Youtube page starting at 5:45 pm.
THREE YEAR OLD CHILD DIES FROM INJURIES RECEIVED IN A HOME EXPLOSION
Updating a story we have been following for you this week, another death has been reported from a home explosion in Southeast Missouri.
According to the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office, a three year old girl died Thursday from injuries she received in an explosion on Monday in Wyatt.
The child’s father, Corey Coleman, had previously succumbed to injuries sustained in the house explosion on Monday.
The child’s mother, whose name is not being released at this time, and a six month old sibling are still in critical condition.
The Sheriff’s Department says that the other victims are in stable condition and still undergoing medical treatment in various midwest hospitals.
DUCK BLIND DRAWING AND REGISTRATION TO BE HELD THIS WEEK
The annual duck blind drawing will be held this weekend at Wappapello Lake.
According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers the drawing and registration will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 20th, at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitors Center.
The registration fee is $15 and applicants must bring cash, a personal check, or money order.
Permitted duck blinds may be placed on the lake after Labor Day and must be removed from the lake, or transferred to a permitted storage cove, within two weeks of the closure of the zoned duck season.

NEELYVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT OPEN HOUSE TO BE HELD NEXT WEEK
The Neelyville School District will be holding orientation and open house events next week before the beginning of the school year.
According to school officials, Kindergarten Orientation has been scheduled for 6 pm on August 22nd.
The open houses for all other grade levels will begin at 6 pm on August 23rd.
ALMOST MONTH LONG PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT UNDERWAY IN CARTER COUNTY
U.S. Route 60 in Carter County will be reduced with a 12-foot width restriction for almost a month as Contractor crews perform pavement repairs.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, crews will work in various locations along eastbound and westbound Route 60 throughout Carter County as a part of this project.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Thursday, September 15th.

REMAINS OF WORLD WAR TWO SAILOR FROM SOUTHEAST MISSOURI HAS BEEN ACCOUNTED FOR
The remains of a sailor from Southeast Missouri who had been killed in World War Two has been accounted for.
According to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, Navy Fireman 2nd Class Edward E. Casinger, 21, of Senath, Missouri, was killed during World War II when the battleship he was assigned to was attacked at Pearl Harbor.
The December 7th, 1941 attack on the USS Oklahoma resulted in the deaths of 429 crewmen, including Casinger.

From December 1941 to June 1944, Navy personnel recovered the remains of the deceased crew. By September 1947, laboratory staff was only able to confirm the identifications of 35 men from the USS Oklahoma.
In October 1949, a military board classified those who could not be identified as non-recoverable, including Casinger.
Between June and November 2015, personnel exhumed the USS Oklahoma Unknowns for analysis and were able to identify Casinger.
He was accounted for on October 1st, 2021.
Casinger will be buried on November 19th at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
HOXIE MAN ONE OF TWO PEOPLE KILLED IN FOUR VEHIVLE CRASH
A Hoxie man is one of two people that were killed in a four vehicle wreck in Northeast Arkansas.
According to the Arkansas State Police, the crash occurred Tuesday morning on US Highway 63 when a vehicle driven by 30 year old Kyle Simmons, of Hoxie, crossed the center line and struck two vehicles in the opposite lane.
Simmons vehicle was then hit from behind by another vehicle.
Simmons, along with 30 year old Anna Swearinger, of Rome, Georgia, were killed in the wreck.
Two other people were injured and taken to area hospitals.
ONE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WRECK INVOLVING A FREIGHTLINER
One person was injured in a wreck involving a freightliner Wednesday morning near Matthews.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 36 year old Jennifer Diamond, of Sikeston, was driving on US Highway 61 when her vehicle struck the back of a freightliner.
Diamond suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital.
No injuries were listed for the driver of the freightliner.

The new school year is coming up in Southeast Missouri and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is reminding parents to make sure that their children have the required immunizations.
Children attending kindergarten through 12th grade are required to have the following immunizations or booster shots: DtaP, IPV, Hepatitis B, MMR, and Varicella.
8th through 12th grade students are also required to have the Tdap and MCV immunizations.

New Day Ministry in Poplar Bluff will be hosting a feed and seed event today.
The event is from 3 to 5 pm and is first come, first serve, with packs limited to one per household.
New Day Ministry is located at 703 Franklin Street in Poplar Bluff.
MODOT CREWS TO BE WORKING ON ROUTE N IN STODDARD COUNTY THROUGH SEPTEMBER
Contractor crews for the Missouri Department of Transportation are making improvements to Route N in Stoddard County.
According to officials, the work zone is located from Route 91 at Bell City to Route 60.
Milling is taking place this week, which is causing the roadway to be reduced to one lane.
Paving operations will begin on Monday, August 22nd. During this time, motorists should anticipate closures along 1-mile sections of the route.
Completion is anticipated by Saturday, October 1st, weather permitting.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN IN CUSTODY ON FLEEING AND STEALING CHARGES
A Poplar Bluff man is in custody in Stoddard County on multiple charges.
According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 46 year old Jeffery Gilbreath was arrested Monday on charges of receiving stolen property, stealing - $750 or more, and resisting arrest, detention, or stop by fleeing.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Gilbreath led authorities on a chase from Stoddard County to Butler County with speeds reaching over 100 miles per hour.

Gilbreath was apprehended after abandoning the vehicle, which had reportedly been stolen out of Poplar Bluff, near Butler County Road 630.

Gilbreath is being held in the Stoddard County Jail on a $35,000 cash only bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning.
POCAHONTAS AND HOXIE AMONG SCHOOLS BEGINNING CLASSES TODAY
At least two more schools in Northeast Arkansas will be starting their school year today.
The Pocahontas and Hoxie School Districts are both set to begin classes this morning.
Most schools in Southeast Missouri will be welcoming kids back beginning next week, with Monday seeing at least 27 schools opening their doors, including Poplar Bluff, Doniphan, and Kennett.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI HOUSE EXPLOSION RULED AN ACCIDENT
Updating a story we brought to you earlier this week, an explosion that resulted in one death and multiple injuries in Southeast Missouri has been ruled an accident for now.
According to the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office, investigators have determined that the cause of a residential explosion in Wyatt was from propane gas that filled the residence.
The leak has been narrowed down to the gas cook stove or a gas water heater. It is unknown at this time what the ignition source was that ignited the gas, but officials say that the incident is not drug related nor is any foul play suspected.
The victims are in different hospitals and burn units across the mid-west. Two of the nine victims are in critical condition, while the other seven are in stable condition.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Officials are reminding area residents that if you smell gas in your home, leave immediately and call 911 to report the incident. Do not use your cell phone or landline phone inside the residence.
OPEN HOUSES TO BE HELD THIS WEEK IN THE TWIN RIVERS SCHOOL DISTRICT
The Twin Rivers School District will be holding multiple open houses tomorrow.
According to school officials, the back to school open houses have been scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 pm on Thursday, August 18th at both the Fisk and Qulin campuses.
There will not be an open house held for the High School in Broseley.
WAPPAPELLO WOMAN RECEIVES SERIOUS INJURIES IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK
A Wappapello woman was seriously injured in a single vehicle wreck Tuesday morning in Wayne County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the vehicle was traveling on Highway 34, near Silva, when it ran off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree.
A passenger in the vehicle, identified as 37 year old Ashli Werner, of Wappapello, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.
The driver, 30 year old David Gurney, of Poplar Bluff, was moderately injured and was also taken to a Poplar Bluff hospital.
ROAD WORK UNDERWAY ON INTERSTATE 55 IN NEW MADRID COUNTY
Northbound Interstate 55 in New Madrid County is being reduced to one lane with a 14-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement work.
According to officials, the section of roadway affected is located from Exit 49 to Exit 52.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Thursday.

OVER $280,000 RAISED DURING ST. JUDE VIP BANQUET
Hundreds of people packed the Black River Coliseum Friday night to raise money for the kids at St. Jude.
Miranda Fickert with Poplar Bluff Heroes tells us that over $280,000 was raised for St. Jude Children’s Research hospital during the 7th Annual St. Jude VIP Banquet.
Fickert says that this is the highest amount that they have ever raised.

Fickert says that they are planning on passing the $300,000 mark.
PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION SAYS THAT HOUSE EXPLOSION IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI WAS CAUSED BY GAS LEAK
One person is dead following a house explosion in Southeast Missouri.
According to the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office, the explosion occurred at a home in Wyatt Monday morning at approximately 7 am.
A total of 10 victims were located at the scene. Age ranges from 6 months to mid-twenties. All the victims were transported to medical facilities for medical treatment. All the injuries range from serious to life-threatening.
Officials say that a male in his twenties later died at an area hospital. His name was not released.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the cause of the explosion was a gas leak in the home. It is not determined yet where the gas leak was coming from.
The Missouri State Fire Marshal Service, the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office, and the Gas Commission investigation unit are looking into the exact cause of the explosion.
Numerous area agencies responded to the scene for this incident.
POPLAR BLUFF FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDS TO A FIRE EARLY MONDAY MORNING
Poplar Bluff fire crews were dispatched to an apartment fire early Monday morning.
According to the Poplar Bluff Fire Department, the fire was located at a home containing two apartment units on North 9th street.
The building was evacuated and no injuries were reported.
Officials say that the fire originated from a vacant apartment and the cause is under investigation.
ONE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN MOTORCYCLE WRECK NEAR POPLAR BLUFF
A Rector man was injured in a motorcycle wreck Saturday night.
According to authorities, 18 year old Carter Crabtree was riding the motorcycle on the West Outer Road, two miles south of Poplar Bluff, when the vehicle ran off the roadway, struck a cable barrier, and overturned.
Crabtree was seriously injured in the wreck and transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.
$100,000 SCRATCHERS TICKET SOLD AT POPLAR BLUFF CONVENIENCE STORE
A top prize of $100,000 has been claimed from a lottery scratcher’s ticket in Poplar Bluff.
According to the Missouri Lottery, one of five $100,000 top prizes offered on the “Fistful of $500” Scratchers game was claimed by a player who uncovered the prize on a ticket sold at Rick’s 66, in Poplar Bluff.
The prize was later claimed at the St. Louis Lottery office on July 28th.
The identity of the winner was not released.
BROSELEY MAN ARRESTED ON METH CHARGE
An area man was taken into custody over the weekend on a felony drug charge.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 48 year old Stanley Vest, of Broseley, was arrested late Saturday night on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine along with a charge of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
Vest also reportedly had a warrant out of Carter County for possession of a controlled substance.
Following the arrest, Vest was transported to the Butler County Jail.

A project to replace the westbound Business 60 and Pine Street Bridge over the Black River and Union Pacific railroad in Poplar Bluff will begin today.
Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation tell KWOC News that construction will begin this morning.
During construction, westbound traffic will be shifted to a head-to-head configuration on the eastbound bridge. The head-to-head configuration will allow one lane of traffic in each direction.

POPLAR BLUFF R-1 SCHOOL DISTRICT OPEN HOUSES TO BE HELD THIS WEEK
Parents in Poplar Bluff will have the opportunity to learn more about the schools their children will be attending this fall during a series of open houses scheduled for this week.
Open houses will be held for the Kindergarten along with 7th and 8th grades on Tuesday, August 16th.
The 5th and 6th grade Open Houses will also be on the 16th at the Middle School.
The four elementary schools will be holding their Open Houses on Wednesday, August 17th.
The 4th grade and Poplar Bluff Senior High School open houses will be on Thursday, August 18th. The Technical Career Center will also be hosting an open house on the 18th.
Early Childhood will hold meet the teacher visits from August 17th through the 23rd.

MORE NORTHEAST ARKANSAS SCHOOLS TO RETURN TO CLASSES TODAY
At least seven schools in Northeast Arkansas will be welcoming kids back to classrooms today.
The school year is scheduled to start this morning at the Piggott, Rector, Maynard, Sloan-Hendrix, Greene County Tech, Marmaduke, and Paragould school districts.
In Southeast Missouri, classes will also begin today for students at Three Rivers College.
Wednesday will see the Pocahontas and Hoxie school districts open their doors for students.
MAN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO AN ALLEGED SHOOTING IN MALDEN
Officials in Malden say that a subject is in custody in connection to an alleged shooting.
According to the Malden Department of Public Safety, 27 year old Aaron Cooper, of Malden, allegedly shot at a subject from a vehicle and then fled officers on August 11th.
He was arrested on Friday.
Cooper is facing numerous charges, including assault 1st degree, armed criminal action, and resisting or interfering with arrest for a felony.
He is being held at the Malden City Jail.
DEXTER POLICE WARN RESIDENTS TO BE MINDFUL OF FALSE FACEBOOK POSTS
Authorities in Dexter are asking the public to be on the lookout for false and scam Facebook posts.
Somebody recently posted to a Dexter area Facebook group about an alleged child who was wandering around the neighborhood and asking for information.
The Dexter Police Department is warning the public about responding to posts like these.
Officials say that if you are unsure, you can click on the original creator’s profile and see that they may only have one Facebook friend, that they do not have any other posts, or they are located in another country, these are great signs the post is a scam.
If you believe that something posted is real, and you have possible information regarding the post, contact your local law enforcement agency.
MODOT TO BE MAKING DRIVING SURFACE IMPROVEMENTS TODAY IN RIPLEY COUNTY
Missouri Department of Transportation crews will be making driving surface improvements today on Routes P and DD in Ripley County.
The work zone will be located from Route 142 to the end of state maintenance.
Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. While work is ongoing, the road will be open to local traffic only.

The Poplar Bluff Mules football team will be kicking off the fall season tonight.
The Maroon/White Scrimmage game will be held tonight at 7 pm at Fred M. Morrow Stadium. Poplar Bluff Athletics Director Kent Keith tells KWOC News that admission is free, but they will be taking donations to help pay for post game meals after road games.

PARAGOULD MAN PRONOUNCED DEAD FOLLOWING TWO VEHICLE WRECK
A Paragould man has died following a two vehicle wreck Wednesday afternoon.
Officials with the Arkansas State Police tell KWOC News that 57 year old Kevin Faughn was driving on Highway 49, shortly before 3 pm Wednesday, when his vehicle traveled across three lanes and hit another vehicle head on.
Faughn was pronounced dead following the wreck. No injuries were listed for the occupants of the second vehicle.
NAME RELEASED OF WOMAN KILLED IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS WRECK
Officials have released the name of a Paragould woman who was killed in a three vehicle wreck earlier this week.
According to the Arkansas State Police, 26 year old Jace Simpson, of Paragould, was driving on US Highway 49 in Greene County on Tuesday, when his vehicle crossed the center turn lane into the path of a vehicle driven by 49 year old Amber Gill, whose vehicle then struck another vehicle.
Officials say that Gill was killed in the wreck.
Simpson and the driver of the third vehicle were both injured and transported to an area hospital.
POPLAR BLUFF LIBRARY USES GRANT TO GET STEM KITS FOR AREA CHILDREN
The Poplar Bluff Library has launched a new collection of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Kits geared toward children who are 8 to 12 years old.
Library officials tell us that each kit contains a nonfiction book and two corresponding hands-on learning activities. Topics covered include space, geology, measuring, number patterns, coding, engineering, and more.
The Library received a total of 28 kits from a grant supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

BUTLER COUNTY COMMUNITY OUTREACH DAY SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER

SEARCH UNDERWAY FOR MAN WANTED IN CONNECTION TO SIKESTON MURDER
Authorities in Sikeston are asking for the public’s help in locating a man who is wanted in connection to a July murder.
Officials with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tell KWOC News that they are searching for Demarcus Philip Turner, of Charleston, in connection to the murder of Sh’Tyana Ingram.
The murder occurred in the early morning hours of July 3rd in Sikeston.

MANY NORTHEAST ARKANSAS SCHOOLS TO RETURN TO CLASS TODAY
Summer is winding down, which means it’s time for students in Northeast Arkansas to return to class.
Many schools in Northeast Arkansas will be holding their first day of classes today, including Corning, Hillcrest, and Walnut Ridge.
Several Northeast Arkansas schools will be beginning their classes on Monday of next week including Piggott, Paragould, and Rector.
BOOTH SPACE STILL AVAILABLE FOR 31ST ANNUAL OLD GREENVILLE DAYS
Booth space is still available for the 31st Annual Old Greenville Days.
According to the Wappapello Lake US Army Corps of Engineers, the annual event has been scheduled for September 17th and 18th at the Greenville Campground.
Booth spaces are free, but items must be hand crafted or generated.

DEADLINE APPROACHING TO REGISTER FOR ADULT SOFTBALL IN POPLAR BLUFF
Time is running out to get your team registered for adult softball in Poplar Bluff.
According to the Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation department, the registration deadline for adult women’s and coed softball has been set for Friday, August 12th.
The cost to register is $300 per team.

CONTRACT AWARDED FOR ROAD PROJECTS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission recently awarded a contract for multiple Southeast District road projects
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, an almost $2.6 million dollar contract was awarded to Apex Paving Company, for 26.9 miles of pavement resurfacing on multiple routes, including Route TT in Dunklin County and Route U in Reynolds County, among others.
Additional information, regarding timelines and impacts to traffic, will be released prior to the start of construction.
RUN 4 THE ARTS SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 10TH
A date has been set for the 7th annual Run 4 the Arts hosted by Three Rivers College.
The four-mile run or walk, along with a one-mile walk, will be held at 8 am on Saturday, September 10th at the College’s Poplar Bluff Campus. The course will begin and end in front of the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.
All funds from the event will go to benefit scholarships for students studying the arts at Three Rivers College.

NORTHEAST ARKANSAS MAN KILLED IN OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING
One man is dead in connection to an officer involved shooting in Northeast Arkansas.
Officials with the Arkansas State Police tell KWOC News that Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies and Arkansas State Troopers responded to a call at 3:45 PM of a man firing a gun indiscriminately in an area neighborhood.
After arriving at the scene, a sheriff’s deputy and two state troopers observed 40 year old William Chad Newman, of Portia, standing inside a shop building with a handgun and rifle.

Law enforcement officers made repeated attempts requesting Newman to drop the guns and surrender. Officials say that Newman refused to comply and pointed one of the guns at the officers who then fired on Newman.
Newman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Special agents of the state police Criminal Investigation Division were called to the residence and are conducting an investigation of the incident.
The two state troopers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave per state police policy.
MISSOURI VOTERS TO DECIDE ON RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA
Missouri voters will decide in November whether to allow recreational marijuana use in the state.
The secretary of state's office on Tuesday announced the campaign received enough voter signatures to go on the November ballot. Missouri already allows medical marijuana use.
Efforts to legalize recreational marijuana have failed to pass in the Republican-led Legislature, so advocates are turning to voters for approval.
Recreational marijuana is already legal in 19 states.
Another Missouri proposal that would allow ranked-choice voting failed to make it on the ballot.
MOTORISTS ASKED TO WATCH FOR STUDENTS ON THE ROADWAYS
With students returning to school soon, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to watch for students.
Drivers should expect a change in traffic patterns ─ school buses and parents taking their children to school and many young drivers will join other motorists on the road and affect the morning and afternoon commute. Also expect an increase in pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
Missouri law states that on a two-lane road, if a school bus is stopped and displaying warning signals while loading or unloading children, drivers must stop when meeting and following the bus. However, it is only necessary to stop on a four-lane highway when following the bus.
Drivers, when you see a stopped school bus, stay alert and follow the law. Children may not be aware of traffic and dart unexpectedly into the roadway.
Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about riding a bus, walking, or driving to school in a safe manner. If they ride a bike, please make sure they wear a helmet and follow traffic laws.
FIRST PHASE OF FUTURE I-57 PROJECT TO BEGIN THIS MONTH IN BUTLER COUNTY
The first phase of the U.S. Route 67/Future I-57 project will begin soon in Butler County.
Missouri Department of Transportation officials say that this includes upgrading the Route 160/158 interchange south of Poplar Bluff.
The interchange will be reconfigured with two roundabouts in place of the current loop ramps in the northwest and southeast quadrants.
Initially, work will consist of pipe extensions and earthwork for the new merge ramps. During this stage of construction, Route 160/158 and Route 67 will be minimally impacted.
Work is set to begin on Monday, August 22nd, with completion anticipated by November 2023.
Additional information detailing impacts to traffic will be released prior to the start of paving. Tentatively, paving is anticipated to begin in 2023.
TWO ARRESTED ON METH AND GUN CHARGES IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
Two Poplar Bluff men were taken into custody early Tuesday morning on multiple felony charges.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 52 year old Gordon Gipson and 35 year old Jessie Brumfield were each arrested shortly before 2 am Tuesday on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and unlawful possession of a firearm.
They both are also facing charges of possession of a controlled substance – marijuana and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.
Following the arrest, both were held at the Butler County Jail.
CURRENT RIVER CLEANUP SET FOR NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE

JOINT OPERATION RESULTS IN 45 ARRESTS IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS
A joint operation last week resulted in 45 arrests in Northeast Arkansas.
According to Chad Henson, Commander of the Second Judicial Drug Task Force, the arrests were made on August 5th in Paragould.
Of the 45 arrests, there were 18 felony drug arrests and 27 misdemeanor arrests. Two of the arrests included a felon-in-possession-of-firearm arrest and one included a warrant arrest for rape.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE TO HOST OPEN HOUSE AT NEW DEPARTMENT HEADQUARTERS
The new Poplar Bluff Police Department headquarters is almost finished and members of the public will have a chance to see the facility this month.
The PBPD is hosting an open house at the headquarters from 11 am to 5 pm on August 20th.

HIGHWAY PATROL SEEKING APPLICANTS FOR 118TH RECRUIT CLASS
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is seeking applicants for its new recruit class.
Officials say that the 118th Recruit Class will report to the Patrol's Law Enforcement Academy on July 3rd, 2023.
The selection process is a multi-phase testing procedure including: written examination, a physical fitness for duty assessment, polygraph examination, background investigation, and oral interview board.
To be eligible, candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent and be 21 years of age upon graduating from the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy.

OVER TWO WEEK LONG ROAD PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN DUNKLIN COUNTY
Route NN in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane beginning today as contractor crews overlay the roadway and perform shoulder work.
The section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route 412 to the Arkansas State line.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, through Friday, October 21st.
DRIVING SURFACE IMPROVEMENTS TO IMPACT TRAFFIC IN CARTER COUNTY
Missouri Department of Transportation crews will be making driving surface improvements this week on Route K in Carter County.
According to officials, the work zone will be located between Highway 21 north and Highway 21 south.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, today through Thursday. While work is ongoing, the road will be open to local traffic only.

Parents in Poplar Bluff will have the opportunity to learn more about the schools their children will be attending this fall during a series of open houses scheduled for next week.
Open houses will be held for the Kindergarten along with 7th and 8th grades on Tuesday, August 16th.

TEENAGER SERIOUSLY INJURED AFTER STRIKING SILO NEAR MATTHEWS
A teenager was taken to an area hospital after being involved in a single vehicle car crash over the weekend.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 17 year old female was driving on County Road 843, near Matthews, when her vehicle ran off the roadway and struck a silo.
The teenager suffered serious injuries and was transported to a Sikeston hospital.
Officials say that the wreck occurred shortly after midnight Saturday morning.
LUNSFORD AMONG THE WINNERS OF THE OZARK BORDER ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE BOARD ELECTION
Judy Lunsford was one of four people elected to the Ozark Border Electric Cooperative board.
The election was held on Friday before the Cooperative’s Annual meeting.
Lunsford currently serves as the Board Vice-President.
In addition to Lunsford, Jordan Collins, Bill Hager, and Greg Lintz were all elected to the 12 member board.
All four of the winners were incumbents.
MISSOURI GOVERNOR TO MEET WITH STATE LEGISLATORS TODAY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
The Missouri Governor is scheduled to be in Southeast Missouri today.
Governor Mike Parson will be meeting today with Missouri House Republican members from the southeastern region of the state in Portageville.
Following the meeting, Parson will be touring a rural route repair project on Route 162 in New Madrid County.

Route 162 in New Madrid County will be closed through late September as contractor crews replace the bridge over drainage ditch 62.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the closure is located between Route B and County Road 361 near Portageville.

Crews in Madison County evacuated over 20 people from floodwaters in the Fredericktown area.
According to the Fredericktown Fire Department, they began handling a high number of calls beginning at roughly 3 am Thursday morning related to the strong thunderstorms and flash flooding.
Officials say that crews consisting of the City of Fredericktown Street Department, members of the fire department, and several volunteers evacuated 21 people from the flood waters.

STODDARD COUNTY MURDER TO BE FEATURED ON NETFLIX DOCUMENTARY
A documentary featuring a Southeast Missouri murder case will be debuting on Netflix this month.
According to the Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, the Netflix documentary series “I am a Killer” will be premiering on August 30th.
The episode “A Question of Loyalty” will profile the prosecution of Victoria Isaac for the murder of her husband, Puxico resident Chris Isaac.
Officials say that Victoria Isaac was given a life sentence plus 20 years in connection to the case.
OZARK BORDER ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE MEETING SET FOR TODAY
Ozark Border Electric Cooperative will be holding their annual membership meeting today.
The meeting was scheduled to begin at 7 am. Drive through registration and voting will be until 2 pm, followed by the business meeting at 2:30 pm.
The meeting will be held at the Ozark Border headquarters, located on South Westwood Boulevard in Poplar Bluff.
TWIN RIVERS SCHOOL DISTRICT REGISTRATION EVENT SCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEEK
The Twin Rivers School District has announced that it will be holding a registration event for all students next week.
Royal Registration is scheduled for 12 to 6 pm on Tuesday, August 9th and Thursday, August 11th at Twin Rivers High School in Broseley.
The Tuesday date is for students whose primary parent or guardian’s last name begins with A-K, while Thursday will be for names beginning with L-Z.
School pictures will be taken and class schedules will be distributed during the event.

DUCK BLIND DRAWING AND REGISTRATION TO BE HELD THIS MONTH
A date has been announced for the annual duck blind drawing at Wappapello Lake.
According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers the drawing and registration will be held at 9:00 a.m. on August 20th, at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitors Center.
The registration fee is $15 and applicants must bring cash, a personal check, or money order.
Permitted duck blinds may be placed on the lake after Labor Day and must be removed from the lake, or transferred to a permitted storage cove, within two weeks of the closure of the zoned duck season.

Officials with the Malden Department of Public Safety tell KWOC News that authorities are investigating a vehicle versus motorcycle crash that occurred on July 31st near State Highway J and Palo Verde Street.
The operator of the motorcycle, identified only as a 36 year old male from Bernie, was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

KANSAS MAN DROWNS WHILE FLOATING IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
The body of a Kansas man has been found in Southeast Missouri.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 48 year old Dee Hodges, of Wichita, Kansas, went missing while floating on the Current River.
His body was found on Tuesday at Cave Spring in Shannon County. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Shannon County Coroner Sam Murphy.
According to the incident report on the Highway Patrol’s website, the death is being considered a drowning.
CITY OF POPLAR BLUFF AWARDED GRANT FOR INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT
Poplar Bluff will be receiving money to help with an infrastructure project.
The Missouri Department of Economic Development has announced that the city of Poplar Bluff has been awarded $500,000 through the Community Development Block Grant program.
The project consists of several storm water improvements, including storm water detention basins and culverts near the north branch of Pike Creek.
The total cost for this project is estimated at approximately $905,000, with Three Rivers College contributing approximately $305,000. The City of Poplar Bluff will also contribute $100,000 of in-kind work toward the project.
14TH ANNUAL MULE SKINNER GOLF TOURNAMENT SET FOR FRIDAY
The 14th Annual Mule Skinner Golf Tournament is coming up this week.
The 4 person scramble tournament will be held on Friday at the Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff. Check in time is 11:30 am with a shotgun start at 1 pm.

MISSOURI 2022 PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS
Voters in Butler County have chosen who they want to serve as the next County Clerk.
Donna Hillis has won the Republican Nomination for Butler County Clerk, defeating Kyle Aubuchon by 120 votes. No Democrat is running for the seat, so Hillis will be unopposed in the November election.
In Carter County, Ron Keeney won the Republican nomination for Presiding Commissioner, Mary M. Godsy won the Republican Nomination for Circuit Court Clerk, and Debi Reynolds won the Republican Nomination for County Clerk.

Ripley County voters also approved a sales tax issue and voted to make the Prosecuting Attorney a full-time position in the county.
Voters in Wayne County chose Ginger Koller Joyner as the Republican nominee for Prosecuting Attorney and Brian Polk for the Republican nomination for Presiding Commissioner.
Sawyer Smith has won the Republican Nomination for Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney, defeating incumbent Russ Oliver.
Also in Stoddard County, Greg Mathis won the Republican Nomination for Presiding Commissioner, Cecil Weeks prevailed in his race for the Republican Nomination for County Clerk, and Paula Yancey won the Republican Nomination for Circuit Clerk.
In Dunklin County, voters in Campbell approved a one-eighth of one percent sales tax to provide funding for local parks.
A multi-million dollar waterworks bond issue was also successful in the city of Portageville.
Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt has defeated scandal-scarred former Governor Eric Greitens and 19 others in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate.
He will face Trudy Busch Valentine in November, a nurse and philanthropist who defeated Marine veteran Lucas Kunce and nine others in the Democratic primary.
Scott Fitzpatrick won the race for the Republican Nomination for State Auditor, defeating David Gregory.
In Southeast Missouri, Jason Smith comfortably fended off a challenger for the Republican nomination for the Missouri 8th District Representative in the United States House of Representatives.
For the 149th District of the Missouri State House of Representatives, Donnie Brown was victorious over Eric Garris.
POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO MULTIPLE PURSUITS
A Poplar Bluff man has been taken into custody in connection to multiple pursuits.
Captain J.R. Keirsey with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that the first pursuit occurred Monday night at around 11:30 pm. Officers were dispatched to an area on Spring Street in reference to a subject trying to get into parked vehicles.
When the officers arrived, the subject fled the area in a passenger vehicle, nearly striking two patrol cars. Officers chased the subject until the pursuit was terminated due to high speeds and vehicle traffic.
The driver was identified as 35 year old Kristopher Campbell, of Poplar Bluff. Keirsey says that Campbell has an active felony warrant out of Colorado for robbery with intent to kill.
Shortly before 11:30 am on Tuesday, officers observed Campbell on north Westwood Boulevard and another pursuit ensued. The pursuit came to an end after approximately 36 minutes on Highway 67 near the Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop E Headquarters.
Officers reportedly observed Campbell using suspected illegal narcotics before the arrest. He has been charged with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, careless and imprudent driving, felony resisting arrest, and other traffic violations.
He has been lodged into the Butler County Justice Center.
DATE SET FOR BEGINNING OF PROJECT TO REPLACE BRIDGE OVER BLACK RIVER IN POPLAR BLUFF
A date has been set for work to begin to replace the westbound Business 60 and Pine Street Bridge over the Black River and Union Pacific railroad in Poplar Bluff.
Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation tell KWOC News that construction will begin on August 15th.
During construction, westbound traffic will be shifted to a head-to-head configuration on the eastbound bridge. The head-to-head configuration will allow one lane of traffic in each direction.
Officials say that Riverview Drive and B Street will be closed during construction, and parking will not be allowed underneath the bridge along Riverview Drive.
The bridge replacement is anticipated to be complete by July 15th, 2023.
ESCAPED SOUTHEAST MISSOURI INMATE IS BACK IN CUSTODY
Updating a story we brought to you earlier this week, an escaped inmate is back in custody.
Dunklin County Sheriff Bob Holder tells KWOC News that Dwayne Woods Jr was taken into custody by the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office and the Hayti Police Department on Monday.
Woods had been wanted after he escaped from custody while at the Pemiscot County Hospital early Sunday morning.
Woods was being held in custody at the Dunklin County Justice Center on charges of failure to appear, burglary, stealing, assault, robbery, and armed criminal action.
CONCRETE REPLACEMENT TO BE CONDUCTED IN BUTLER COUNTY THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THIS MONTH
State road crews will be working on US Route 67 in Butler County through the middle of this month.
Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation tell us that crews are continuing to perform concrete replacements on U.S. Route 67 between Route 160/158 and the Missouri/Arkansas Stateline.
Weather permitting, crews will be working in various locations along this section of Route 67 until mid-August. Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.
Officials say that motorists should anticipate a lane reduction within each work zone. An automated flagger assistance device will be in place to guide motorists through the work zone. The device features stop and slow paddles, red and yellow lights and a changeable message sign.

DEXTER POLICE INVESTIGATING FATAL WRECK
Police in Dexter are investigating a fatal two vehicle crash.
Captain Cory Mills with the Dexter Police Department tells KWOC News that the wreck occurred Monday morning at the intersection of Business US Highway 60 and Catalpa.
Two people who were in one of the vehicles have died, 87 year old Patsy Tally and 59 year old Stephen Belvin, both of Dexter.
No one in the second vehicle was injured.
The Dexter Police Department was assisted by the Dexter Fire Department and members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol at the scene.
Mills says that the crash is under investigation and additional details will be released at a later time.
HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FOR MUCH OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI THROUGH WEDNESDAY
Much of Southeast Missouri will be under a heat advisory through Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service, heat index values of over 100 degrees are possible today and tomorrow.
Area residents are reminded to take extra precautions if you have to work or spend time outside.
Remember to take frequent breaks and check on the elderly and young. Also never leave a child or pet in a vehicle unattended.
POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGE AND FOR ALLEGEDLY RESISTING ARREST
Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested an area man on multiple charges.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 25 year old Jacob Jackson, of Poplar Bluff, was arrested Sunday evening on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.
Jackson is also facing charges of resisting arrest for a felony and possession of drug paraphernalia. He also reportedly had a felony warrant for a probation violation out of Butler County.
Following the arrest, Jackson was held at the Stoddard County Jail.
ROAD WORK SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY
Missouri Department of Transportation crews will be making driving surface improvements today on Route VV in Butler County.
According to officials, the work zone is located between County Road 628 and Route B.
Weather permitting, work will take place through 4:00 p.m. this afternoon. During the project, the road will be open to local traffic only.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI ROAD TO BE CLOSED FOR PART OF THIS WEEK
Missouri Route 84 in Pemiscot County will be closed starting today as contractor crews perform railroad repairs.
The closure will be located from North Chestnut Street to First Street in Hayti.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Thursday. Officials say that a signed detour will be in place.

PORTAGEVILLE RESIDENTS TO VOTE ON SEVEN MILLION DOLLAR BOND ISSUE
Residents in a Southeast Missouri community will be deciding on a multi-million dollar bond issue during tomorrow’s primary election.
Citizens in Portageville will be voting on whether the city should issue a combined waterworks and sewerage system revenue bond in the amount of up to seven million dollars.
There are also multiple competitive races in Carter County that will be decided tomorrow.
Ron Keeney and Joe L. Crites are facing off for the GOP nomination for presiding commissioner.
The race for the Republican nomination for Clerk of the Circuit Court will see Mary M. Godsy take on Joanna Giles. The Clerk of the County Commission Republican nomination is between Mikki Stinchcomb and Debi Reynolds.

FRESHMAN ORIENTATION SET FOR AUGUST 17TH AT POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL
Freshman orientation is set to be held next month at Poplar Bluff High School.
Officials say that orientation will begin at 8 am on Wednesday, August 17th, and students can begin arriving at 7:30 to check in outside of the Poplar Bluff High School main entrance.
Students will get to learn more about life at the High School, get their class schedule, learn the layout of the campus, and meet their advisory class.
This is a student only event and students should bring a backpack.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI CITY AWARDED OVER $60,000 TO EVALUATE WASTEWATER COLLECTION SYSTEM
A southeast Missouri city has been awarded over $60,000 for wastewater system improvements.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded a $62,500 Clean Water Engineering Report Grant to the city of Hayti Heights to help cover engineering costs for evaluating water and wastewater system improvements.
The city will use the grant to identify wastewater system improvements needed to continue reliable service to the area and reduce stormwater infiltration into sewer collection pipes.
The facility’s plan should be complete in December 2023.

There will be a speed limit reduction at the work zone and motorists are being asked to use caution while driving in the work area.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK IN STODDARD COUNTY
A Bertrand man has died following a single vehicle wreck Thursday morning in Stoddard County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred when 49 year old Maurice Morgan was driving on Route Y, near Aquilla, and his vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a ditch, and overturned.
Morgan was pronounced dead at the scene by Stoddard County Coroner Brent Stidham.

There are multiple races for Republican nominations that will be decided on Tuesday in Stoddard County.
The Missouri Primary election will be held on August 2nd.
In Stoddard County, Sawyer Smith will be challenging Russ Oliver for the Republican nomination for Prosecuting Attorney. Ronnie Alsup and Greg Mathis are both running for Presiding Commissioner.
The County Clerk race will see Cecil Weeks taking on Deana Moore Pennington, while Leanne Brady will face Paula Yancey for the nomination for Circuit Clerk.
Two candidates are running for the GOP nomination for the Missouri House of Representatives seat for the 149th District, which covers all of New Madrid County and Mississippi County, along with part of Northeastern Pemiscot County.
The two candidates running for the nomination are Donnie Brown and Eric Garris.

A hiring event will be held today for a prominent employer in Poplar Bluff.

Butler County Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC News that officials used dental records and X-Rays in order to identify the subject as 67 year old Kenneth White, of Poplar Bluff.
The cause of death has been determined to be drowning.

The Coroner says that White had a medical condition that caused a mental status change over the past two months and was hospitalized on July 20th. He left the facility against medical advice.
Akers says that interviews conducted as a part of the investigation and video surveillance obtained from area businesses allowed officials to determine that White was in the Downtown Poplar Bluff area on July 21st.
Akers wanted to thank the Butler County Sheriff’s Department, Poplar Bluff Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the Butler County Health Department as well as the many members of the public who submitted information for their assistance in the investigation.
Akers says this is a sad case and he hopes that this raises awareness of mental illness.
CITY OF CAMPBELL TO VOTE ON SALES TAX FOR LOCAL PARKS
The Missouri Primary Election is coming up on August 2nd, and citizens in a Southeast Missouri community will be deciding on funding for local parks.
Residents of Campbell will be voting on imposing a sales tax of one-eighth of one percent for the purpose of providing funding for local parks.
In Wayne County, there are competitive races for the republican nomination for Prosecuting Attorney and Presiding Commissioner.
Ginger Koller Joyner and Rocky Kingree are both running for the Prosecuting Attorney nomination, while Brian Polk and Dan Striplin will face off for the Presiding Commissioner nomination.
FREE ATHLETE PHYSICALS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF
Poplar Bluff High School and Junior High student athletes can get a free physical done today at the High School.
Physicals will be conducted beginning at 5:30 pm for athletes in the 7th and 8th grades, beginning at 6:30 pm for 9th and 10th grades, and beginning at 7:30 pm for 11th and 12th grades.
Poplar Bluff Athletic Director Kent Keith tells us that the first practice day for fall high school sports is set for Monday, August 8th. Junior High sports will follow a week later, on Monday, August 15th.
RIPLEY COUNTY FAIR TO BEGIN ON AUGUST 3RD
Preparations are underway for the 2022 Ripley County Fair.
Officials say that the fair will be held this year from August 3rd through August 6th at the Fairgrounds, south of Doniphan.

ALMOST TWO MONTH LONG PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY
An almost two month long pavement construction project is scheduled to begin today in Southeast Missouri.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route T in Butler, Stoddard and Wayne Counties will be reduced to one lane with an 11-foot width restriction from Route 51 near Puxico, to Route 60 near Poplar Bluff as contractor crews add shoulders and overlay the roadway.
Weather permitting, work will be conducted from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily through Friday, September 23rd.

AUTOPSY COMPLETED ON BODY FOUND IN BLACK RIVER

The body was found Saturday afternoon at around 4 pm near the Ashcroft and Wilson Street intersection in Poplar Bluff.
Butler County Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC News that the autopsy allowed officials to conduct dental x-rays and acquire DNA.

COUNTY CLERK RACE HEADLINES PRIMARY ELECTION IN BUTLER COUNTY
The race for the County Clerk position in Butler County is one of the big contests for next Tuesday’s primary election.
Three people in Butler County are running for the Republican nomination for Clerk of the County Commission, Donna Hillis, Kyle Aubuchon, and Kim Mizell.
There are multiple competitive races for Republican nominations in Ripley County. Jesse Roy and Danny Kellas are running for Presiding Commissioner. Michael A. Williams and Aldina Cagle are facing off for the County Clerk spot, while Ruth Austin and Marilyn Hart are both running for the Clerk of the Circuit Court.
Ripley County voters will also be deciding two ballot measures. The first one will be for a countywide sales tax of one-half of one percent for providing funding for general revenue and public safety purposes.
The second ballot measure asks Ripley County voters if the office of prosecuting attorney should be made a full-time position.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT CHOSEN AS PIONEER IN EDUCATION
A Southeast Missouri superintendent has been chosen as a Missouri Pioneer in Education.
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education announced this week that Dr. J.J. Bullington was one of six people to be selected for the honor.
Dr. Bullington has served the Caruthersville School District for more than 40 years. As superintendent, Bullington oversaw design and reconstruction in the district after an F-3 tornado devastated the area. The new high school was completed in 2011.
The 2022 Pioneers will be recognized on Monday, August 1st during the 61st Annual Cooperative Conference for School Administrators at Lake Ozark.
BLOOMFIELD RECEIVES REBATE FOR COSTS INCURRED DURING CONSTRUCTION OF WATER SYSTEM
A Southeast Missouri community has received over $20,000.
According to the Missouri Rural Water Association, the City of Bloomfield recently received a check for over $23,000 from the Missouri Public Utilities Commission.
Officials say that the check was a rebate of interest costs incurred during the construction of upgrades to the city’s water system.

U.S. Route 62 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform approach work.

NEELYVILLE TO HOST PUBLIC HEARING ON TUESDAY
The city of Neelyville will be hosting a public hearing today.
City officials say that the hearing will be to discuss the past performance by the city in carrying out a Community Development Block Grant.
The grant provided a portion of the funding to rehab or replace grinder stations, lift stations, and manholes, along with rehabilitation and upgrades to the existing wastewater treatment center.

DONIPHAN MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE DRUG CHARGES
Authorities in Ripley County have arrested an area man on multiple drug related charges.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 23 year old George Wallace, of Doniphan, was taken into custody Sunday evening on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.
Wallace is also facing charges of possession of marijuana and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.
Following the arrest, Wallace was transported to the Ripley County Jail.

BODY FOUND IN POPLAR BLUFF, INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY
Authorities are asking for assistance in identifying a body that was located this past weekend in Poplar Bluff.
Butler County Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC News, that on Saturday afternoon, at around 4 pm, three kayakers located a body in Black River near the Ashcroft and Wilson Street intersection.
Akers says the body had been in the water for at least two or three days prior to being found. The body is described as an adult white male, estimated at 30-50 years of age, balding with several days of beard growth, muscular build, wearing a black shirt, black jeans over swimming trunks, and black sports shoes.
BODY FOUND IN POPLAR BLUFF, INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY
Authorities are asking for assistance in identifying a body that was located this past weekend in Poplar Bluff.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday morning in Farmington.
The Poplar Bluff Police Department, the Poplar Bluff Fire Department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol Water Division, and the Butler County Coroner’s Office are assisting with the investigation.

LINEUP ANNOUNCED FOR 2022 POPLAR BLUFF SHOWDOWN
The eight teams who will be playing in the 2022 Poplar Bluff Showdown have been released.
Poplar Bluff Athletics Director Kent Keith tells KWOC News that in addition to Poplar Bluff, the field will include four Tennessee teams and three Arkansas teams.
Poplar Bluff will be joined by Springdale, Blytheville, and Little Rock Christian, from Arkansas, along with Memphis Hillcrest, Memphis Douglass, Haywood, and Germantown, from Tennessee.
The three day Tournament will begin on Wednesday, December 28th.
POPLAR BLUFF MAN SENTENCED ON 2ND DEGREE MURDER CHARGE
A Poplar Bluff man will spend around three decades behind bars on a second degree murder charge.
46 year old Michael Choate was found guilty by a Dunklin County jury in April of the offenses of murder 2nd degree and armed criminal action.
The charges stem from the August 2019 death of Choate’s girlfriend, 37 year old Katrina Suiter, in Butler County.
Last week Choate was sentenced to 28 years’ incarceration on the murder charge and four years’ incarceration on the armed criminal action charge.
The two sentences were ordered to be served consecutively.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI POLICE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATING SHOOTING
An investigation is underway in connection to a weekend shooting in Southeast Missouri.
According to the Caruthersville Police Department, the shooting occurred at the American Legion during the early morning hours on Sunday.
Few details about the incident have been released and officials are asking anyone who has information to contact the Caruthersville Police Department at 573-333-0216.
REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY ON ROUTE 53 IN BUTLER COUNTY
Route 53 in Butler County will be reduced today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews mill the roadway.
The section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route N to County Road 218.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
SEAL COAT OPERATION UNDERWAY IN WAYNE COUNTY
Missouri Department of Transportation crews will be making driving surface improvements today on Route F in Wayne County.
Officials tell KWOC News that crews will be seal coating Route F from Route 67 to the end of State maintenance.
Seal coats are a pavement repair process that is used on roads with lower traffic volumes to extend the life of the roadway.
Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
