HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT TODAY FOR PORTIONS OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

High heat index values will create dangerous conditions for today.

According to the National Weather Service, portions of Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas will be under a heat advisory beginning this morning and continuing through this evening.

Heat index values of up to 106 degrees are expected for today.

Weather officials say that it is possible for isolated to scattered thunderstorms to develop this afternoon, which could be severe with damaging wind gusts.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN CHARGED WITH KIDNAPPING

Updating a story we brought to you yesterday, a Poplar Bluff man has been charged in connection to an alleged kidnapping earlier this week.

18 year old Keaton Rexroad is in custody in the Butler County Justice Center on a charge of 1st degree kidnapping. His bond was set at $50,000.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News that on Monday, Rexroad allegedly assaulted and kidnapped a woman by force from a residence on Century Avenue in Butler County.

The woman was found safe and Rexroad was arrested later Monday afternoon. 

PEMISCOT COUNTY MAN TO APPEAR IN COURT TOMORROW ON KIDNAPPING CHARGE

A Caruthersville man will appear in court tomorrow on a kidnapping charge.

According to Missouri Case Net, a warrant was served Tuesday on Dustin Rawlings for the felony charges of 1st degree kidnapping and 1st degree assault.

The charges stem from an alleged incident on June 18th in Caruthersville.

No bond was set for Rawlings and his arraignment has been scheduled for Thursday morning. 

SIX JUVENILES TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AFTER GUNS AND DRUGS FOUND IN VEHICLE

Multiple juveniles were recently taken into custody after guns and drugs were found in a vehicle.

Officials with the Hayti Police Department tell KWOC News that at around 1 am Saturday morning officers located a vehicle parked on the walking track at the baseball field.

While investigating the vehicle, officers learned that it was occupied by six juveniles ranging in age from 13 to 16 years old.

Officers also located and seized two loaded handguns as well as marijuana.

Officials say that the juveniles were taken into custody and turned over to the Pemiscot County Juvenile Office for prosecution. 

FOOD PANTRY SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

A free food distribution event for families will be held today in Poplar Bluff.

The ABC Food Pantry has been scheduled for 12:30 to 2 pm this afternoon at the Bread Shed on South D Street.

Attendees are asked to bring their own box, bag, or laundry basket to hold your food. 

DRAINAGE REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY ON ROUTE AA IN BUTLER COUNTY

Route AA in Butler County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform drainage repairs. 

The work zone will be located from County Road 623 to County Road 621. 

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

MAN IN CUSTODY AFTER ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTING AND KIDNAPPING A WOMAN IN BUTLER COUNTY

A teenager who allegedly assaulted and kidnapped a woman is in custody.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News that at around noon on June 20th, 18 year old Keaton Rexroad allegedly assaulted and kidnapped Lexi Ellis by force from a Butler County residence.

Dobbs says that Ellis was found safe Monday afternoon and Rexroad has been taken into custody.

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE STUDENT WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN BULL RIDING

A member of the Three Rivers College rodeo team has won a national championship.

Casey Roberts won the bull riding competition at the College National Finals Rodeo this past weekend in Casper, Wyoming.

Roberts teammate, Cole Skender, placed third in the competition.

At the end of the rodeo, the Three Rivers College rodeo team finished in fifth place out of a total of 49 colleges that participated. 

INVESTIGATION STARTED INTO ATTEMPTED BURGLARY IN MISSOURI BOOTHEEL

An investigation has been initiated following the report of an attempted burglary in the Missouri bootheel.

According to the Hayti Police Department, on Sunday officers were dispatched to Kings Tobacco in reference to an attempted burglary.

The reporting party stated that two males approached the store wearing masks and gloves and attempted to break the front glass door of the store.

When the males were unable to make entry, they fled the scene.

Officials say that possible suspects have been identified and an investigation into the incident is ongoing. 

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE DRUG RELATED CHARGES

Authorities in Butler County have arrested an area man on multiple drug related charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 37 year old Thomas Youngblood, of Poplar Bluff, was taken into custody Saturday morning on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Youngblood is also facing charges of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while suspended or revoked, and failure to display plates.

Following the arrest, he was transported to the Butler County Jail. 

POPLAR BLUFF MAN TO GRADUATE FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY

A Poplar Bluff man will be one of 25 people to graduate from the Missouri State Highway Patrol Law Enforcement Academy this week.

Denny Smith, of Poplar Bluff, will graduate from the 25 week long Academy on Friday and will report to duty in Butler and Ripley Counties on July 11th.

Officials say that the ceremony will be live streamed on the Highway Patrol’s Facebook page.

Southeast Missouri will be getting a total of four new troopers from the 113th Recruit Class.

In addition to Smith, Jaxton Edwards, of Harrison, Arkansas, was assigned to Dunklin County, while Gregory Bixler, of New Madrid, and Taylor Wiebe, of Wichita, Kansas, were assigned to Pemiscot and New Madrid Counties. 

PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO BEGIN TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Missouri Route 25 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane beginning today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs. 

The section of Route 25 to be reduced is located from Route M to Route E near Bloomfield. 

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. both today and tomorrow.

TWIN RIVERS SCHOOL DISTRICT APPROVES FOUR DAY SCHOOL WEEK STARTING THIS AUGUST

Some students in Butler County will have a significant change to their school week starting this year.

Twin Rivers R-10 School Board President Keith Parker tells KWOC News that the school board has approved a four day school week starting in August. Students will attend classes Tuesday through Friday.

Parker says school day times are still being finalized and they are hoping the official calendar will be released this week.

The school board also approved a two percent increase to faculty’s base pay.

ANOTHER HOT WEEK AHEAD FOR SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Temperatures are expected to rebound this week after a relatively mild weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, high temperatures are expected to be in the mid to upper 90’s every day this week in Poplar Bluff as another heat wave settles on the area.

Residents are reminded to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun if possible, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

OPEN ENROLLMENT STILL AVAILABLE FOR POPLAR BLUFF KINDERGARTEN CENTER 

It is not too late to get your child enrolled for kindergarten this fall at the Poplar Bluff Kindergarten Center.

According to Poplar Bluff School officials, open enrollment will be available at the Kindergarten Center for the remainder of June from 8 am to 3 pm, Monday through Friday.

Children who will be five years old on or before July 31st, 2022 are eligible to enroll.

Parents are asked to bring a proof of residency along with the child’s birth certificate, social security card, and shot record.

MISSOURI FROGGING SEASON TO BEGIN JUNE 30TH

We are less than two weeks away from the beginning of frogging season in Missouri.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, beginning June 30th at sunset and continuing through October 31st, those with a fishing permit or small-game hunting permit may frog for bullfrogs and green frogs.

The daily limit is eight frogs of both species combined and the possession limit is 16 frogs of both species combined. Only the daily limit may be possessed on waters and banks of waters where frogging.

The public can go frogging with a fishing or small-game hunting permit, but children 15 and under and Missouri residents 65-years and older are not required to have a permit.

8TH ANNUAL RIDE FOR A CURE TO BE HELD IN AUGUST

The 8th Annual Ride for a Cure Dice Run in memory of Larry Maronay has been scheduled for August.

Registration for the event will begin at 10 am on August 27th at the Dexter Elks Lodge, with the ride beginning at 11 am. The entry fee is $20 per bike and $10 for an additional rider with a meal included at the end of the ride.

All proceeds will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

DRIVER EXAMINATIONS SUSPENDED TODAY IN OBSERVANCE OF THE JUNETEENTH HOLIDAY

There will be no driver examinations available today in Missouri due to a federal holiday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Driver Examination Stations throughout the state are closed today in observance of Juneteenth.

Officials say that normal operations will resume on Tuesday.

KANSAS MAN KILLED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MOTORCYCLE WRECK

A Kansas man was killed in a motorcycle wreck Thursday afternoon in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 71 year old Michael Beckham, of Winchester, Kansas, was driving on US Highway 60, near Fremont, when his motorcycle ran off the side of the road and overturned. 

Beckham was pronounced dead at the scene by Carter County Coroner Joe Chapman.  

COOLER WEATHER OVER THE WEEKEND LEADS TO ANOTHER HEATWAVE NEXT WEEK

Cooler weather is coming this weekend, but another heat wave will follow next week.

According to the National Weather Service, we are expecting highs in the mid-90’s for today in Poplar Bluff, but this weekend high temperatures will drop to around the high-80’s.

This will be a temporary break, as highs will be back to the mid-90’s on Monday and possibly to the triple digits to Tuesday.

Weather officials say this week was the first time Poplar Bluff has experienced triple digit temperature readings since 2013. 

POPLAR BLUFF MAN CHARGED WITH STATUTORY SODOMY

An area man is due back in court later this month on a sodomy charge.

Rondriguez Hopkins, of Poplar Bluff, has been charged with felony statutory sodomy or attempted statutory sodomy with a person less than 12 years of age in connection to an alleged incident from June 7th.

According to a probable cause affidavit, a search warrant was served at a location on Karen Drive that resulted in multiple items of evidence being taken.

A warrant for Hopkins was issued on June 8th and served the next day. Hopkins arraignment then followed on June 13th.

No bond has been set in the case and Hopkins is scheduled to appear in court again on June 23rd. 

AUTHORITIES IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS ARREST MAN ON RAPE AND THREATENING CHARGES

Authorities in Northeast Arkansas have arrested a homeless man on multiple charges, including rape.

According to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, 44 year old Kenny Morrisett was booked on Wednesday on charges of rape and terroristic threatening.

According to a warrant affidavit, Morrisett is accused of sexual abusing an underage female and then threatening to kill another person in connection to the alleged abuse.

Morrisett is being held on a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to be in court on July 29th. 

JOSH BURSON MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT SET FOR THIS WEEKEND

The 13th Annual Josh Burson Memorial Golf Tournament is set for Saturday at the Ozark Ridge Golf Course in Poplar Bluff.

The 4 man scramble tournament costs $75 per person to enter and tee times will be available at 8 am and 1 pm. The tournament will be followed by a dinner beginning at 6 pm at Holiday Inn. The dinner will also have an auction and raffles.

RAYNI DAY MIRACLES MEMORIAL 5K RUN SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND

Area runners will be flocking to McLane Park in Poplar Bluff this weekend for the Rayni Day Miracles Memorial Run.

The 5k run will be held on Saturday, with registration beginning at 7 am and the race starting at 8 am.

MOVIE SHOWING THIS WEEKEND TO RAISE MONEY FOR KIDS IN PUXICO

The Puxico Christmas Toy Drive is hosting a superhero night this weekend.

The event will begin at 5 pm on Saturday at Veteran’s Park in Puxico. There will be games, a bounce house, and some of your children’s favorite superheroes at the park.

There will also be a showing of the movie Shazam beginning at dark. All proceeds from the event will go to the Puxico Christmas Toy Drive.

MAN IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING BANK ROBBERY IN POPLAR BLUFF

A man is in custody following an alleged bank robbery in Poplar Bluff.

Chief Danny Whiteley with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that at approximately 9:50 am on Wednesday, officers with the PBPD responded to Southern Bank on North Westwood Boulevard in reference to a bank robbery that had just occurred.

Employees at the bank told officers that a white male subject had entered the bank and demanded money. The suspect was last seen running north on Westwood Boulevard carrying a large sum of money.

Moments later, the responding officers located the subject just north of the bank location. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and the stolen money was recovered.  Whitely says that over $4,000 had been taken.

The suspect has been identified as 35 year old William Woodruff, of Poplar Bluff. He is facing a charge of robbery 1st degree.  

Whitely added that contact was made with the FBI to assist in the investigation.

EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING CONTINUES IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

An excessive heat warning is in effect for the fourth consecutive day in much of Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service, in Poplar Bluff temperatures are expected to get to around 98 degrees today with heat index values up to 107 degrees possible this afternoon.

Preliminary data from Wednesday showed that Poplar Bluff had a high of 97 degrees.

Weather officials say Thursday will make 4 to 5 straight days of prolonged heat and humidity which can have cumulative effects on those susceptible to heat related illness.

Remember to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

OZARK BORDER CUSTOMERS ASKED TO CONSERVE ELECTRICITY ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY

Customers of Ozark Border Electric Cooperative are being asked to conserve energy on Thursday and Friday.

Associated Electric Cooperative, the power supplier for six regional generation and transmission cooperatives and 51 distribution cooperatives, including Ozark Border, notified member systems on June 14th that energy supplies may be tight on June 16th and June 17th.

The notification also said that member systems can help make a difference by conserving energy on those two days from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., when peak energy use occurs.

The reasons given for the conservation appeal were an unseasonably hot weather pattern, unplanned outages at three associated generating units, and projections of declining wind power for Thursday and Friday.

Some actions you can take to limit your energy usage include raising your thermostat a few degrees, limiting usage of large appliances, unplugging any devices that are not in use, and turning off unnecessary lights.

ALTRUSA ROOM AT TWIN TOWERS TO BE DEDICATED TO FORMER POPLAR BLUFF MAYOR

Next week, a room in the Twin Towers in Poplar Bluff will be dedicated to a former mayor of the city.

Altrusa International of Poplar Bluff and the Housing Authority of Poplar Bluff will be dedicating the Altrusa Room in memory of Betty Absheer at 11 am on June 22nd.

During her time as Mayor and on the Poplar Bluff City Council, Absheer worked with the Housing Authority on several projects, including the cafeteria and social area in the Twin Towers.

Absheer also served as President of the Poplar Bluff Altrusa Club on two occasions.

The Altrusa Room was set up by the Housing Authority in recognition of Altrusa’s work for the Twin Towers cafeteria and social area during the 1970’s.

The room is now being rededicated in memory of Absheer and all the work she has done for the community and Altrusa.

BRIDGE REPAIRS CAUSE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF PEMISCOT COUNTY ROAD

Route 84 in Pemiscot County is being reduced to one lane with a 16-foot width restriction as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge repairs. 

Officials say that the project includes pavement repairs on the bridge over Interstate 155.

The work zone will be in place 24 hours a day through Monday, June 27th.

DEXTER MAN CHARGED WITH TWO COUNTS OF ARSON

A Dexter man is facing arson charges in connection to two fires in the last week.

Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Russell Oliver tells KWOC News that 29 year old Bradley Mitchell has been charged with two counts of arson.

The first charge alleges that Mitchell started a fire on June 11th, in a five unit apartment building located on Truitt Street in Dexter. At the time of the fire, four of the apartments were occupied by tenants that were present in the structure.

The second charge alleges that Mitchell started a fire on Monday at a home in Dexter. At the time of that fire the homeowner was present in the structure.

Oliver says that Mitchell is in custody and that no bond has been set in the case. 

EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING CONTINUES IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

An excessive heat warning remains in effect for much of Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service, in Poplar Bluff temperatures are expected to get to around 97 degrees today with heat index values of 102 to 106 degrees possible this afternoon.

Preliminary data from Tuesday indicated that Poplar Bluff’s high temperature of 98 degrees fell one degree short of the city’s previous record high for June 14th, which was set in 1987.

Even though today is expected to be hot, it is not expected to get close to the record for June 15th which is 103 degrees.

Weather officials say that we could see high temperatures again approaching triple digits in Poplar Bluff on Thursday and Friday before a slight cooling during the weekend. 

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FACING MULTIPLE COUNTS OF PROMOTING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

An area man was taken into custody Tuesday morning on child pornography and drug charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 65 year old James Graham, of Poplar Bluff, was arrested at around 11 am Tuesday on six felony counts of promoting child pornography.

Graham is also facing charges of failure to register as a sex offender, possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, Graham was held at the Butler County Jail. 

AUDIT RELEASED OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI COUNTY COLLECTOR

A Southeast Missouri County Collector received an overall rating of good in a recent audit.

On Tuesday, State Auditor Nicole Galloway released an audit of the county collector and property tax system of Reynolds County.

Galloway says that a rating of good indicates that the entity is well managed. The report contains few findings, and the entity has indicated most or all recommendations have already been, or will be, implemented.

The audit found that the county collector did not properly review fees withheld on utility and delinquent taxes calculated by the property tax system for accuracy and, as a result, the county collector over withheld some fees. The audit also recommended better cybersecurity practices related to passwords and user IDs.

Kathy Hoffmann had served as county collector until October 31st, 2021, and Denise Smith was appointed to fill the vacancy.

Galloway says that Missouri law requires an audit be performed when a vacancy occurs in a county collector's office.

OVER MONTH LONG PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT UNDERWAY IN WAYNE COUNTY

Route V in Wayne County will be reduced with an 11-foot width restriction over the next month as contractor crews perform pavement repairs. 

The section of Route V being reduced is located between Route 49 and Route A.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Friday, July 15th.  

ROAD PROJECT TO CAUSE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF NEW MADRID COUNTY ROAD

Outer Road 55 in New Madrid County will be closed today and tomorrow as Missouri Department of Transportation crews seal the roadway with a mixture of rock and oil. 

The section of roadway being closed is located from Route AA to County Road 408.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. both today and tomorrow.

EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING CONTINUES IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

An excessive heat warning remains in effect for much of Southeast Missouri and all of Northeast Arkansas.

According to the National Weather Service, dangerously hot conditions with heat index values of 105 to 110 degrees are expected for this afternoon. Tomorrow afternoon, heat index values of around 105 degrees are expected.

Preliminary data from Monday indicated that Poplar Bluff’s high temperature of 100 degrees matched the city’s previous record high for June 13th, which was set in 1925.

Today close to record high temperatures are anticipated again, with Poplar Bluff expected to top out in the upper 90’s. The high will be nearing the record for June 14th of 99 degrees, which was set in 1987. 

MULTIPLE COOLING CENTERS AVAILABLE IN BUTLER COUNTY

Anyone looking for relief from the heat wave that will scorch Southeast Missouri the rest of this week can visit any of the multiple cooling centers available in Butler County.

Cooling centers have been established in Poplar Bluff at the Butler County Health Department and the Poplar Bluff Municipal Library.

A Cooling Center is also available at the Qulin Senior Center.

A tool to find cooling centers in your area is available at the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services website. 

NORTHEAST ARKANSAS MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON RAPE CHARGE

A Northeast Arkansas man is in custody for allegedly raping a runaway juvenile.

According to an affidavit filed in Greene County, 44 year old Erguin Velasquez-Flores, of Paragould, is facing a felony charge of rape.

On Saturday, the Paragould Police Department investigated a runaway juvenile report. Officers found the juvenile, who disclosed having sexual intercourse with Velasquez-Flores the previous night.

Velazquez-Flores was arrested and is being held without bond. 

BUSINESS OWNERS ADMIT TO BRINGING OVER 100 UNAUTHORIZED MIGRANT WORKERS TO KENNETT AREA

A father and son from Florida and their labor contracting company have admitted to bringing more than 100 unauthorized migrant workers to Southeast Missouri.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri, 37 year old Jorge Marin-Gomez and his father 67 year old Jorge Marin-Perez each pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court to a misdemeanor charge of unlawful employment of aliens.

The Marin J. Corporation pleaded guilty in April to a felony wire fraud charge.

Officials say that the Marin J. Corporation, with the direct knowledge and approval of Marin-Perez and Marin-Gomez, applied for H2A visas stating that the workers would be employed in Florida harvesting watermelons and blueberries, but relocated many of the workers to a farm in Kennett, in violation of the terms outlined on the visa applications.

The workers harvested watermelons and cotton there. The corporation is scheduled to be sentenced August 2nd and the individuals on September 7th.

ROADSIDE PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

Northbound U.S. Route 67 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane beginning today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform roadside work.  

The section of roadway to be involved in the project is located from Route 158 to Route 160 near Harviell.

Weather permitting, work is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily through Thursday.

SHOULDER WORK TO FORCE CLOSURE OF NEW MADRID COUNTY ROAD THIS WEEK

Route D in New Madrid County will be closed for part of this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform shoulder work. 

The work zone will be located near Lilbourn, from Route E to Route MM.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

RECORD BREAKING TEMPERATURES POSSIBLE THIS WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF

A heat wave is crossing Southeast Missouri and weather officials say that Poplar Bluff could reach close to record temperatures.

According to the National Weather Service, an excessive heat warning will be in effect until 8 pm Wednesday for multiple Southeast Missouri counties, including Butler and Stoddard. A Heat Advisory will be in effect for the rest of Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas through Wednesday. 

Weather officials say the worst of the heat wave will occur today when widespread heat index values of up to 110 degrees or higher will occur. Heat index values will reach 105 to 110 on Tuesday and 95 to 105 on Wednesday.

The city of Poplar Bluff is expected to reach near the record high temperatures for the date, today and tomorrow. The previous record high for June 13th was 100 degrees set in 1925. The previous record high for June 14th was 99 degrees, which was set in 1987. 

OFFICIALS URGE CAUTION WITH RISING TEMPERATURES AND HEAT INDEXES

Officials with the American Red Cross are urging Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas residents to be cautious with the rising temperatures and humidity this week.

According to the Red Cross, everyone is at risk when temperatures rise above 90 degrees; and the elderly and the very young are most susceptible to heat and heat-related illnesses. Signs of heat-related illnesses include nausea, dizziness, flushed or pale skin, heavy sweating and headaches.

Persons with heat-related illness should be moved to a cool place, given cool water to drink and ice packs or cool wet cloths should be applied to the skin. If a victim refuses water, vomits or loses consciousness, call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number immediately.

Everyone is advised to take extra precautions if you plan to work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

TWO BUTLER COUNTY ROAD PROJECTS SET FOR THIS WEEK

Road crews will be conducting multiple projects this week in Butler County.

Route PP in Butler County will be closed from Route TT to County Road 425 today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway. 

Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Also this week, Eastbound U.S. Highway 60 in Butler County will be reduced beginning today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge repairs. 

The work zone will be located between Route DD and Highway 51 near Fisk.

Work is scheduled for 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Thursday.

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING POSSIBLE SHOOTING DEATH IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

An investigation into a possible shooting death is underway in Southeast Missouri.

According to authorities, a woman, identified as Wayneasha Carter, was found suffering from a gunshot wound Saturday night in Caruthersville.

She was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.

There is at least one person of interest in connection to the investigation, which is ongoing.

TWO POPLAR BLUFF RESIDENTS ARRESTED ON TRAFFICKING CHARGES 

Two Poplar Bluff residents were taken into custody Saturday afternoon on trafficking charges.

 Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 30 year old Jaleel Gipson and 25 year old Justin Gipson were each arrested on felony charges of trafficking a controlled substance, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, and unlawful use of a weapon.

Following their arrests, both were transported to the Ripley County Jail. 

ONE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WRECK NEAR POPLAR BLUFF 

A Southeast Missouri man was seriously injured over the weekend in a wreck near Poplar Bluff.

According to authorities, the crash occurred Sunday morning on US Highway 60, 10 miles west of Poplar Bluff, when a vehicle failed to yield and struck another vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle, 41 year old Jeremy Bibbs, of Hornersville, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

No injuries were listed for the driver of the first vehicle. 

DUNKLIN COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED THIS WEEK FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS

Route DD in Dunklin County will be closed this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway to be closed is located from Route 53 to County Road 223, near Campbell.

Work is set to take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Thursday.

JOSH BURSON MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT SET FOR NEXT WEEK

The 13th Annual Josh Burson Memorial Golf Tournament is set for June 18th at the Ozark Ridge Golf Course in Poplar Bluff.

The 4 man scramble tournament costs $75 per person to enter and tee times will be available at 8 am and 1 pm. The tournament will be followed by a dinner beginning at 6 pm at Holiday Inn. The dinner will also have an auction and raffles.

NINE SEX OFFENDERS FOUND TO BE NON COMPLIANT IN CARTER COUNTY

Nine sex offenders were found to be non-compliant during a recent sweep in Carter County.

Sheriff Dustin Boyer tells KWOC News that the Carter County Sheriff’s Office recently conducted sex offender compliance checks on all know sex offenders residing in the county.

From the 29 compliance checks conducted, charges were filed against nine people. Eight for failure to register as a sex offender and one for being physically present within 500 feet of a park or playground.

Boyer says that the objective of the compliance checks are to provide public safety, verify registration compliance, and initiate proactive investigations. 

ANNUAL FREE FISHING DAYS SET FOR THIS WEEKEND

This weekend is a perfect weekend to go out and fish in Missouri.

Missouri Department of Conservation Officials say that during the Free Fishing Days on June 11th and 12th anyone may fish in Missouri without having to buy a fishing permit, trout permit, or trout park daily tag.

Aside from not needing permits, other fishing regulations remain in effect during Free Fishing Days, such as limits on size and number of fish an angler may keep. Special permits may still be required at some county, city, or private fishing areas.

SCHOOL BUS TEST DRIVE SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND AT POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL

Anyone who wants to drive a school bus will have the opportunity to take one for a test drive this weekend.

The Poplar Bluff R-1 Transportation Department will be hosting a school bus test drive event on Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm at the Poplar Bluff Middle School.

Prospective drivers must have a valid driver’s license and be at least 21 years old.

Food will also be available along with activities for children.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route 34 to Route U near Piedmont. 

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 am to 5 pm daily through Friday, July 8th.

SUSPECT CHARGED FOR SOUTHEAST MISSOURI HOMICIDE

Updating a story we brought to you earlier this week, a suspect has been charged in connection to a homicide investigation in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Charleston Department of Public Safety, 21 year old Tyrese Tate, of Cape Girardeau, was arrested on Monday.  

The arrest stemmed from the death of 18 year old Zionta Haynes who was found dead with gunshot wounds following a car crash in Sikeston on Sunday. The driver of the car also had gunshot wounds and was transported to a St. Louis hospital.

Charleston Department of Public Safety Director Robert Hearnes says that Tate has been charged with murder 1st degree, assault 1st degree, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon.

Hearnes added that Tate is being held in the Mississippi County Jail on a no bond warrant and the investigation into the incident is ongoing. 

FLAG RETIREMENT CEREMONY SET FOR THIS WEEKEND IN WAPPAPELLO

A flag retirement ceremony has been scheduled for this weekend in Wappapello.

The Poplar Bluff Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution will be performing flag retirements at 4:30 pm on Saturday at the Wappapello Civic Center.

Anyone who has a flag they would like to retire can bring it to the civic center between 2 and 4 pm on Saturday. Officials say that the ceremony will be open to the public.

PB ONE OF 21 STATE SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO RECEIVE GRANT MONEY TO IMPROVE HEALTH AND WELLNESS OF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS

The Poplar Bluff School District is one of 21 rural school districts across the state to receive grant money to improve the health and wellness of students and teachers.

Poplar Bluff R-I will get $3,870 to purchase Calm resources for teachers and hire a mental health consultant in the junior high.

The grant money comes from the Community Foundation of the Ozarks and the Louis L. and Julia Dorothy Coover Charitable Foundation.

To guide this year’s Coover Regional education program, the Community Foundation of the Ozarks conducted a survey of educators in its network of school partners and received more than 400 responses.

Among funding priorities, the health and mental health of both students and teachers were identified as areas of greatest need in rural school districts.

FORMER SOUTHEAST MISSOURI POLICE CHIEF TO SPEND TIME IN JAIL FOR USING EXCESSIVE FORCE

A former police chief in Southeast Missouri will be spending time behind bars for using excessive force.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, former Marble Hill Police Chief, 55 year old Marc Tragesser, pleaded guilty in January to a misdemeanor charge of deprivation of rights under color of law.

In November of 2018, Tragesser went to a Marble Hill home where a woman was staying. He was accompanied by the paternal grandmother of the woman’s children and falsely claimed he had a court order allowing the grandmother to take the children.

When the woman asked to see a copy of the court order, Tragesser shoved her against the wall and handcuffed her. He also arrested her boyfriend.

Tragesser detained the woman in his police vehicle for 90 minutes, only releasing her when she agreed to turn over her children to their grandmother, who did not have custody or visitation rights.

The woman did not see her children again until March of 2019.

Tragesser was sentenced on Tuesday to nine months behind bars. 

TWO NEW COMMERCIAL VEHICLE OFFICERS ASSIGNED TO SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

 The Missouri State Highway Patrol has assigned two new commercial vehicle officers to help keep roadways safe in Southeast Missouri.

CVO Jamey Dockins and LyTyron Robinson Sr. graduated from the Highway Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy last week as a part of the 13th Commercial Vehicle Officers Class.

Dockins and Robinson were both assigned to Troop E which covers most of Southeast Missouri. There were a total of six graduates who completed the 22 week training. 

MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION REMINDS MISSOURIANS TO WATCH FOR BEARS

With summer coming up, the Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding southeast Missouri residents to be Bear Aware.   

MDC Southeast Regional Administrator Matt Bowyer tells KWOC News that now is the prime time for seeing young male black bears on the move.

Bowyer added that this time of year we are likely to see a bear as young males naturally wander in search of a new place to call home.

The bear population is expanding, both in total numbers and range, which might explain the uptick in sightings in recent years.

The MDC’s ongoing bear research indicates the Show-Me-State is currently home to around 800 black bears, and that population is growing by 8 percent each year.

MAN TAKEN TO POPLAR BLUFF HOSPITAL WITH NON LIFE THREATENING INJURIES AFTER BEING SHOT IN RIPLEY COUNTY

A Butler County man suffered non-life threatening injuries following a shooting Tuesday in Ripley County.

Ripley County Sheriff Mike Barton tells KWOC News that the man was shot in the head at a location on Highway 160 near M Highway.

The man was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital for treatment.

Barton says that the Ripley County woman who allegedly shot the man was questioned however no arrests have been made at this time.

The names of both the man and the woman were not released.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing by the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, the Doniphan Police Department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the Butler County Sheriff’s Office. 

ONE DEAD, ANOTHER INJURED, IN CONNECTION TO CRASH NEAR KENNETT

One person is dead and another injured in connection to a three vehicle wreck Tuesday morning near Kennett.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 74 year old Roy Witfield, of Piggott, was driving the wrong way on US Highway 412 and struck a car head on.

Witfield’s vehicle then struck a freightliner.

The driver of the car, 60 year old Frank Morris, of Kennett, was transported to a Pemiscot County hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Witfield suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a Piggott area hospital.

STUDENTS FROM TWIN RIVERS HIGH SCHOOL TO PARTICIPATE IN MOCK DWI CRASH

Students from Twin Rivers High School will be participating in a mock DWI crash this week.

The students will be joining their peers from five other southeast Missouri schools during a youth traffic safety leadership training conference in Cape Girardeau starting on Thursday.

The conference is a part of a statewide program sponsored by the Missouri Department of Transportation that is committed to empowering youth to promote safe driving habits while preventing underage drinking, impaired driving and driver inattention.

After an initial training session, the attendees create and implement action plans for school and community activities in an effort to reduce unsafe driving habits and traffic deaths.

The mock DWI crash will be held on Friday at the Drury Plaza Hotel Conference Center in Cape Girardeau. 

BUTLER COUNTY MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON FELONY DRUG CHARGE

A Butler County man was taken into custody Monday night on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 33 year old Ryan Capper, of Poplar Bluff, was arrested on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Capper is also facing charges of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and failure to register a motor vehicle.

Following the arrest, he was held at the Butler County Jail. 

DEXTER POLICE RELEASE RESULTS OF CLICK IT OR TICKET ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN

The Dexter Police Department has released the results of a seat belt enforcement campaign that started last month.

Dexter Police Chief Hank Trout says that the police department participated in Missouri's 2022 Click It or Ticket mobilization that was conducted from May 23rd to June 5th.

During the enforcement effort, officers issued a total of 37 traffic tickets and 25 warnings which included 24 seat belt violations.

INTERSTATE OFF RAMP TO BE CLOSED THROUGH JUNE 20TH

An Interstate off ramp has been closed in Pemiscot County for repairs.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the Westbound Interstate 155 Off Ramp to Southbound I-55 in Pemiscot County will be closed as contractor crews perform concrete work and undersealing.

This closure is located at Exit 1A near Hayti.

Weather permitting, the off ramp will be closed through Monday, June 20th.

FLORIDA MAN DROWNS WHILE SWIMMING NEAR DONIPHAN

A Florida man drowned while swimming Sunday near Doniphan.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 22 year old Sherron McCombs, of Tampa, Florida, was swimming in Current River when he began to panic and submerged.

Officials say he was unable to resurface and was later pronounced dead at the scene by Ripley County Coroner Mike Jackson.

According to Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay, 22 year old Sherron McCombs Jr., of Tampa, was wanted by the Tampa Police Department in connection to two murders that occurred in the past eight months. 

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY FOLLOWING SHOOTING AND CAR CRASH IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

One person has died following a car crash in Sikeston.

According to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, Sunday evening officers responded to a motor vehicle crash at Main and Malone.

Fire Division personnel were able to remove both occupants from a tan passenger car. The driver of the car was transported to a St. Louis hospital while the passenger of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene by Scott County Coroner, Scott Branum.

Officials say that both subjects in the passenger car had gunshot wounds that stemmed from a shooting in Charleston.   

Director Robert Hearnes with the Charleston Department of Public Safety says that the deceased has been identified as 18 year old Zionta Haynes, of Charleston.

The major case squad was activated and the death investigation will be handled by the Mississippi County coroner.

OFFICER INJURED DURING ALTERCATION WITH FLEEING SUSPECT IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A Southeast Missouri police officer was injured during an altercation with a fleeing subject on Sunday.

According to the Hayti Police Department, an officer attempted to make contact with a person early Sunday morning in the area of 4th and Washington due to recent break-ins in the neighborhood.

The subject, later identified as Freddie Payne, of Hayti Heights, refused to give the officer his name and took off running. The officer was able to catch up to Payne approximately a block away, however the subject resisted and assaulted the officer including trying to take the officer’s duty weapon from his holster.

Payne was able to escape and was later taken into custody after being found hiding in the back seat of a vehicle.

Payne is being held in the Pemiscot County Jail on warrants charging him with assault 1st degree on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

The officer involved received minor injuries during the altercation.

SIX EARTHQUAKES RECORDED IN A FIVE HOUR PERIOD IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Northeast Arkansas received a series of jolts from numerous earthquakes early Monday morning.

According to the United States Geological Survey, five earthquakes were recorded from 2 am to 2:09 am in an area near Ravenden and Williford.

The magnitudes of the earthquakes ranged from 1.7 to 2.4.

Officials say that just over four hours after the final earthquake of that series, a 2.0 magnitude quake struck the same area.  

EDGE RUT REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route 25 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform edge rut repairs.  

The work zone is located from Route E to Route AA near Bloomfield.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI ROAD TO BE CLOSED THIS WEEK FOR REPAIRS

ONE DEAD AFTER WRECK ON INTERSTATE 55

An early Saturday morning wreck in New Madrid County has left one person dead.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred when a vehicle, driven by 64 year old Gregory Davies, of Knox, Indiana, pulled into the path of another vehicle on Interstate 55.

Davies was pronounced dead at the scene by New Madrid county Coroner George DeLisle.

No injuries were listed for the driver of the second vehicle. 

VEHICLE LEFT IN REVERSE BACKS OVER WOMAN IN MALDEN

A Malden woman was injured Friday night when a vehicle rolled over her.

According to authorities the vehicle had been left in reverse at a residence on Dorothy Street in Malden when it rolled backwards over a 75 year old woman and struck a parked vehicle.

The woman suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital. 

MAN ARRESTED ON RAPE AND SODOMY WARRANTS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Authorities in Southeast Missouri have arrested an area man on rape and sodomy warrants.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 59 year old Johnny Hall, of Boss, was arrested Saturday afternoon in Reynolds County on felony warrants of 1st degree rape or attempted rape and statutory sodomy.

Following the arrest, Hall was held at the Reynolds County Jail. 

NEELYVILLE AWARDED GRANT TO EVALUATE DRINKING WATER SYSTEM

A Southeast Missouri city has been awarded grant money to evaluate the city’s drinking water system.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded a $37,500 Drinking Water Engineering Report Grant to the city of Neelyville.

Officials say that the city will use the grant to identify drinking water system improvements that will enable the system to continue to operate a water system that meets drinking water quality standards and provide reliable water service.

CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK ON FAIR STREET IN POPLAR BLUFF

A Poplar Bluff road will be reduced this week for construction.

According to city officials, Fair Street will be reduced to one lane between Pike Street and Commerce Avenue for water construction.

Fair Street will be reduced between 8 am and 5 pm daily through Thursday, although it is possible that construction may also affect the street next week as well.

FORMER POPLAR BLUFF MAYOR ED DEGARIS PASSES AWAY

A former mayor of Poplar Bluff has died.

According to Poplar Bluff city officials, Ed DeGaris passed away Wednesday night.

DeGaris served as Poplar Bluff mayor from 2011 to 2017 and sat on the Poplar Bluff City Council from 2009 to 2020.

Prior to his work on the City Council, DeGaris reached the rank of Lieutenant in the 33 years that he served in the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

In addition he served on multiple area boards including for Downtown Poplar Bluff and the Butler County Community Resource Council.

Outside of work, DeGaris also was a founding member and helped build Grace Christian Fellowship from its start in 1993.

BODY FOUND IN MISSISSIPPI RIVER NEAR PORTAGEVILLE

Authorities are investigating a body that was found Thursday in the Mississippi River.

According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department, at around 12:30 pm Thursday, the sheriff’s department received a call that a body was found in the river next to a barge near Portageville.

Both Sheriff’s Deputies and the New Madrid County Coroner responded to the scene and located the body.

No information was available about the identity or possible cause of death of the deceased.  

Officials say that an autopsy is pending.

A date has been announced for the 6th annual St. Jude VIP Banquet in Poplar Bluff.

STATE OFFICIALS ARE ASKING PUBLIC TO REPORT TURKEY SIGHTINGS

Missouri state officials are asking for the public’s help in monitoring the state’s wild turkey population.

The Missouri Department of Conservation is asking community members to report wild turkey sightings through the Wild Turkey Brood Survey.

MDC has conducted an annual Wild Turkey Brood Survey every year since 1959 to determine the success of the hatch.

CONTRACT AWARDED FOR FUTURE INTERSTATE 57 PROJECT IN BUTLER COUNTY

A contract has been awarded for upgrades to US Highway 67 in Butler County.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, a $7.4 million dollar contract was awarded contingent on receiving the additional funding from the partnering entity to H.R. Quadri Contractors, for Phase 1A of the Future Interstate 57 project.

The project will upgrade U.S. 67 from Route 160 to County Road 360 in Butler County.

Phase 1A received $2.7 million dollars in funding through Governor Mike Parson’s cost share program and will receive funding from the city of Poplar Bluff.

The contract was one of many awarded for various Southeast Missouri projects during the regular meeting of the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission on Thursday. 

OXLY VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT TO HOST FISH FRY THIS WEEKEND

A Fire Department in Ripley County will be hosting a fish fry this weekend.

The Oxly Volunteer Fire Department Fish Fry will be from 2 to 6 pm on Saturday at the Oxly Fire Department. Food to be served includes fish, hush puppies, fries, and more.

All proceeds will go to assist the Oxly Fire Department with everyday operations and station improvements.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING TRACTOR TRAILER WRECK IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

One person has died following a tractor trailer wreck in Northeast Arkansas.

According to authorities, the crash occurred Wednesday morning on State Highway 90 between Pocahontas and Ravenden Springs.

37 year old Wilbur Wheeler, of Ravenden, Arkansas was going through a curve when he crossed the centerline and struck the front of an oncoming tractor trailer.

Wheeler was killed in the wreck. No injuries were listed for the driver of the tractor trailer.

Officials say that the crash resulted in Highway 90 being closed for a period of time on Wednesday. 

OVER THREE MILLION DOLLARS AWARDED TO THREE SOUTHEAST MISSOURI COUNTIES

A total of over three million dollars will be coming to Southeast Missouri to help communities in three counties.

The Department of Economic Development announced Wednesday it will award $41.2 million through its Community Development Block Grant COVID-19 program to 41 Missouri communities to help them prevent, prepare for, and respond to the lasting effects of COVID-19.

Carter County will receive over $363,000 for renovations at the Carter County Nutrition Center.

Ripley County was awarded over 1.8 million dollars for improvements at the Ripley County Jail as well as improvements to the water distribution systems for Public Water Supply District number one and two.

Wayne County was granted over 1.1 million dollars for broadband infrastructure development along with renovations to the Wayne County Nutrition Center. 

KENNETT ELIMINATED IN CLASS FOUR STATE BASEBALL SEMIFINALS

The Kennett Indians will be playing today for Third Place in the Class 4 State Baseball tournament.

Kennett was eliminated Wednesday in the Class 4 State Semifinals by Logan-Rogersville 11-1.

The Class 4 third place game is scheduled to begin this morning at 10 am where Kennett will take on the Marshall Owls.

MULTIPLE SUMMER FOOD PROGRAMS AVAILABLE FOR FAMILIES IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Missouri state officials have announced new ways for families to find summer food programs throughout the state.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Summer Food Service Program is designed to provide breakfast, lunch and/or snacks to children living in eligible areas during the summer months and during times of public emergencies, when children do not have access to free or reduced-price meals at school.

Community organizations will serve the meals at schools, churches, parks, swimming pools, YMCA facilities, Boys and Girls Clubs, and other spots where children gather when school is not in session.

The meals are provided to all children, regardless of family income, that attend the meal service location. Children do not have to register and there is no fee to participate in the program.

MISSOURI SAW 11 TRAFFIC FATALITIES OVER MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

A total of 11 people died in traffic fatalities in Missouri over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, only one of the fatalities was in Southeast Missouri.

Troopers investigated a total of 304 crashes which resulted in 115 injuries, both increases from last year’s numbers.

Troopers also made 121 DWI arrests and 79 drug arrests. 

SIX MONTH LONG ROAD PROJECT UNDERWAY IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

A six month long road project is underway in New Madrid County.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route H will be closed through Thursday, December 1st as contractor crews replace two bridges.

The section of roadway being closed is located between Route AE and Oak Drive in Matthews.

BUTLER COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED FOR FOUR MONTHS STARTING TODAY

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced that a Butler County road will be closed for approximately four months beginning today.

Route W in Butler County will be closed as contractor crews replace a bridge over Black River. The bridge is located between County Road 525 and Ravenwood Lane near Poplar Bluff.

Work began at 6 a.m. this morning, with completion anticipated by Friday, September 30th, weather permitting.

A signed detour is in place and the Hilliard River Access will be temporarily closed to the public during construction.

PORTAGEVILLE BASEBALL FALLS SHORT IN CLASS 2 STATE FINAL

The Portageville Bulldogs were stopped short in their quest for a state baseball championship.

The Bulldogs fell to Russellville 5-3 Tuesday in the Class 2 State Baseball Final in Ozark.

Russellville jumped on Portageville early with two runs in the first inning and one run in the second and third innings. The Bulldogs finish the season with a 31-4 record.

Kennett will step to the plate later today in Class 4. The Indians will be taking on Logan-Rogersville in the Class 4 State Semifinal. First pitch is scheduled for 10 am. 

MAN FLOWN TO ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL AFTER VEHICLE HE WAS WORKING ON BACKED OVER HIM

A Malden man was flown to a regional hospital early Tuesday morning following an accident in Dexter.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 45 year old Nathan Hemby was working on a vehicle in a Dexter parking lot when the vehicle backed over him and struck another vehicle.

Hemby suffered serious injuries and was transported by air to a St. Louis hospital. 

ARRAIGNMENT HELD FOR MAN CHARGED WITH MULTIPLE COUNTS OF INVASION OF PRIVACY

An arraignment was held Tuesday in Stoddard County for a man charged with multiple counts of invasion of privacy.

According to Missouri Case Net a warrant was served Friday for 51 year old Bruce Dovin, of Jackson, on one count of felony invasion of privacy and three counts of misdemeanor invasion of privacy.

Dovin appeared in court on Tuesday where he pleaded not guilty.

Dovin’s bond was set at $35,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court next on June 23rd.  

BOATS COLLIDE ON CURRENT RIVER, ONE PERSON INJURED

Two boats collided over the holiday weekend on Current River.

According to authorities, the crash occurred as a boat failed to yield to another vessel Monday morning, about one and a half miles south of Doniphan.

The driver of the first boat suffered minor injuries and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital. 

CULVERT REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

Highway 162 in New Madrid County will be reduced today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews repair a culvert under the roadway. 

The section of roadway to be reduced is located between Route B and County Road 272. 

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI BASEBALL TEAM TO PLAY FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TODAY

A Southeast Missouri High School will be playing today for a state championship.

Portageville will be playing Russellville at 1 pm this afternoon in Ozark in the Class 2 State Baseball Finals.

Portageville advanced to the championship game with a 6-0 win over Gainesville in the state Semifinal on Monday.  

Oran will be playing in the Class 1 State Final this evening against St. Elizabeth. 

US HIGHWAY 60 REPAIRS TO BEGIN TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

Eastbound U.S. Highway 60 in Butler County will be reduced beginning today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge repairs. 

The section of roadway to be reduced is located between Route DD and Highway 51 near Fisk.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both today and tomorrow.

TRACTOR STRUCK BY A TRAIN NEAR PORTAGEVILLE, ONE INJURED

A tractor was struck by a train Monday in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 2007 John Deere tractor failed to yield to a locomotive on New Madrid County Road 324 and was hit.

The incident occurred at around 8 am Monday morning. 

Officials say that the 16 year old driver of the tractor suffered serious injuries and was transported to a Sikeston hospital. 

ARKANSAS MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED DURING MOTORCYCLE WRECK IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

An Arkansas man was seriously injured during a motorcycle wreck over the weekend in Southeast Missouri.

According to authorities, a motorcycle ran off of Highway T, near Wappapello, and overturned at around 6 pm Sunday.

The driver, identified as 72 year old Dennis Lape, of Searcy, Arkansas, suffered serious injuries and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.  

DUNKLIN COUNTY MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON FELONY CHARGES

A Dunklin County man was taken into custody over the weekend on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 50 year old Christopher Moore, of Kennett, was arrested Saturday evening on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance for methamphetamine.

Moore is also facing charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Officials say that Moore also had multiple warrants from the Kennett Police Department. 

DRAINAGE REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY NEAR HOWARDVILLE

U.S. Highway 62 in New Madrid County will be reduced today so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform drainage repairs. 

The work zone is located near Howardville, from U.S. Highway 61 to Route W. 

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

HIGHWAY PATROL ENCOURAGES DRIVERS AND BOATERS TO HAVE A SAFE HOLIDAY WEEKEND 

Memorial Day weekend is upon us and the Missouri State Highway Patrol wants the public to make safety a priority. 

Officials tell KWOC News that every available trooper will be on the road enforcing traffic laws and assisting motorists during the long holiday weekend. 

Troopers will focus their attention on hazardous moving violations, speed violations, and impaired drivers. 

Over the 2021 Memorial Day holiday weekend, 10 people died and 442 were injured in over 1,017 traffic crashes. 

Motorists or boaters in need of assistance or who want to report a crime can use the Highway Patrol's Emergency Assistance number at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone.

TIPS ON HOW TO STAY SAFE WHILE GRILLING 

Summer is on the way and that means it is time to get out and grill. 

Poplar Bluff Fire Chief Mike Moffitt says, here are some safety tips and recommendations for when you are grilling. 

Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.

Place the grill well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. 

Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it. 

Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area. 

Never leave your grill unattended when in use. 

If you use starter fluid when charcoal grilling, only use charcoal starter fluid. 

Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.

SEAT BELT ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN UNDERWAY IN MISSOURI 

Memorial Day weekend is coming up and the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety is reminding everyone to be buckled up while on the road. 

State and local law enforcement are joining with the Coalition for the National Click it or Ticket enforcement campaign through June 5th, to highlight the importance of buckling up. 

For 2021, preliminary data indicates 428 individuals killed in Missouri traffic crashes were not wearing their seat belt. It is the highest number of unbuckled fatalities in Missouri during the last 5 years and an 18 percent increase from 2020. 

Along with wearing a seat belt, officials want to remind motorists to slow down, put your phone down, and never drive impaired.

US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS ENCOURAGES WATER SAFETY 

Residents from across Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas are heading to area lakes and rivers for Memorial Day weekend and officials are reminding everyone to be safe. 

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake is reminding visitors of the importance of practicing safe, sensible, and thoughtful activities in, on, and around open water.

One of the most important things you can do is remember to wear a life jacket. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, during the 2021 Memorial Day weekend, there were 12 boating crashes which included one fatality and three injuries.

POPLAR BLUFF CLASS OF 2022 TO GRADUATE TONIGHT 

The Commencement Ceremony for the Poplar Bluff High School Class of 2022 will be held tonight. 

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 7 pm this evening at the Black River Coliseum. 

School officials say that approximately 300 students will be graduating tonight. 

Anyone who cannot attend the ceremony can watch it online on the Mules Media YouTube channel.

DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR THE ELK PERMIT LOTTERY IS MAY 31ST 

Time is running out to apply for the Missouri Elk Permit Lottery. 

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, for the 2022 elk season, the MDC has designated a nine-day archery portion in October and a nine-day firearms portion in December. The five permits will be for bull elk and will be valid for both portions. 

All permits will be assigned through a random-lottery drawing. 

You can apply for the lottery through May 31st by going online to mdc.mo.gov/buypermits or by calling 800-392-4115. You can also apply through the MDC’s Free MO Hunting app or through a permit vendor.

EARTHQUAKE RECORDED WEDNESDAY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 

An earthquake was recorded early Wednesday morning in Southeast Missouri. 

According to the United States Geological Survey, a 2.1 magnitude earthquake occurred shortly before 4 am Wednesday. 

The earthquake was located at around a half a mile west of Risco and had a depth of three miles.

BILL YATES HEARTS FOR THE ARTS CONCERT SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND 

The Billy Yates Hearts for the Arts annual fundraising concert will be held this weekend in Doniphan. 

The concert, featuring Yates, Leona Williams, and Max T. Barnes, will begin at 3 pm on Sunday, May 29th at the Doniphan High School Gym. 

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door, which will open at 2 pm.

MISSOURI PUBLIC SQUIRREL AND BLACK BASS SEASONS BEGINS THIS WEEKEND 

Hunting seasons will begin this weekend for two very different types of animals.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, the squirrel and black bass seasons will open this Saturday, May 28th. 

Officials say the hunting season on eastern gray and fox squirrels runs through February 15th, 2023. The daily limit for hunting, including the use of cage-style traps, is ten and the possession limit is 20. Hunters must have a permit valid for hunting small game or be exempt. 

Anglers may catch-and-keep black bass, such as largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass, through February 28th, 2023. Black bass can be found statewide, but have a closed season part of the year in most streams south of the Missouri River. 

In most state waters, the daily limit on black bass is six and fish taken from most rivers and streams must be 12-inches long. Additional regulations may apply to specific waters or areas. Anglers must have a valid fishing permit or be exempt.

POPLAR BLUFF PARKS AND RECREATION TO CELEBRATE INDEPENDENCE DAY WITH 5K RACE 

Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation is planning to celebrate the 4th of July weekend this year with a 5k race. 

The Independence Day 5k will begin at 8 am on Saturday, July 2nd. The race will begin at Kiwanis Bacon Park and will go through the Oak Grove trail and Hendrickson Park before ending back at Kiwanis Bacon Park.

Registration is $25 and you can register at the Parks and Recreation office located at 430 North Second Street or at active.com. 

All proceeds from this event will go to the Poplar Bluff Trails Coalition.

MULTI COUNTY PURSUIT ON US HIGHWAY 60 LEADS TO AN ARREST OF NEVADA MAN

A Nevada man has been arrested following a pursuit that began in Poplar Bluff and ended in Dexter. 

Lieutenant Josh Stewart with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News, that the incident started following a report of a stolen vehicle.  

JOSH STEWART: 

“On Tuesday at approximately 7 am, officers with the Poplar Bluff Police Department responded to Eugene Boulevard regarding a stolen vehicle. At approximately 8:45 am, officers learned that the victim had spotted the vehicle at O’Reilly Auto Parts. Officers responded to that area and located the vehicle southbound on Business 67. The vehicle then turned onto Park Avenue where officers attempted to make a traffic stop, at that point the suspect failed to yield and a pursuit ensued.”

“During the pursuit speeds reached approximately 115 mph, just east of Poplar Bluff. The suspect continued eastbound on Highway 60 through Dudley and then onto Dexter Missouri. Speeds during that portion of the pursuit reached 70 to 80 mph. Spike strips were deployed at Dexter Missouri which had the desired effect and the vehicle came to a stop. The suspect was removed from the vehicle and taken into custody. He was identified as 28 year old Kory Paul. Paul is facing charges of stealing a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, and failed to yield to an emergency vehicle.” 

“The Poplar Bluff Police Department would like to thank the Dexter Police Department, Stoddard County Sheriff’s Office, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol for assisting in the investigation.”

BLOOD DRIVE TO BE HELD NEXT WEEK AT ELKS LODGE IN POPLAR BLUFF 

A blood drive has been scheduled for next week in Poplar Bluff. 

According to the American Red Cross, the blood drive will be held from 1:30 to 5:30 pm Tuesday May 31, at the Elks Lodge in Poplar Bluff.  

Those who give blood will receive a 20 ounce Red Cross Aluminum Water Bottle and sticker set.

PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT UNDERWAY ON INTERSTATE 55 IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 

Northbound Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County is being reduced this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.   

The section of roadway to be reduced is located from Mile Marker 14 to Mile Marker 16 near Hayti. 

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily through Thursday, May 26th.

DEXTER MAN TO SERVE FIVE LIFE SENTENCES IN PRISON ON SODOMY AND RAPE CHARGES 

A Stoddard County man is set to serve life in prison on sodomy and rape charges. 

Stoddard County Prosecutor, Russell Oliver, tells KWOC News that Jerry Michael Pierce, of Dexter, was sentenced Monday to five consecutive life sentences for the crimes of statutory sodomy in the first degree and rape in the first degree. 

Pierce was found guilty on the charges in March. Oliver says that the victim in the case was a child. 

The jury also found Pierce to be a “Predatory Sexual Offender,” due to a prior offense against another child in 1983 in the state of Michigan.

MOTORISTS ASKED TO USE CAUTION IN THE AREA OF THE 100 MILE YARD SALE 

It is almost time for the annual 100 mile yard sale in Southeast Missouri. 

The Memorial Day weekend event will run along Route 25 from Jackson to Kennett from May 26th through May 30th. 

Motorists should remember that there is more traffic and more congestion along Route 25 this weekend than any other and drivers should be alert and look for pedestrian traffic.

ANNUAL FREE FISHING DAYS SET FOR JUNE 11TH AND 12TH

The Missouri Department of Conservation has announced the dates for the annual free fishing event. 

MDC Officials say that during Free Fishing Days on June 11th and 12th anyone may fish in Missouri without having to buy a fishing permit, trout permit, or trout park daily tag. 

Aside from not needing permits, other fishing regulations remain in effect during Free Fishing Days, such as limits on size and number of fish an angler may keep. Special permits may still be required at some county, city, or private fishing areas.
