EAST CARTER COUNTY REDIBIRDS TAKE TWO OF THREE OFC CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2022 Ozark Foothills Conference Championship Friday was a night for the birds.

The East Carter County Redbirds took home both the boys Varsity and Junior Varsity championships Friday night at the Libla Family Sports Complex in Poplar Bluff.

The Varsity team beat Greenville 57-51 while the Junior Varsity Redbirds took care of Twin Rivers 51-44.

East Carter’s hopes of a triple championship was dashed on the girl’s side as Doniphan defeated the Lady Redbirds 49-36. 

MAN ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY ON DRUG AND ASSAULT CHARGES

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested an area man on drug and assault charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 30 year old Henry Powell, of Sikeston, was arrested Sunday morning on felony charges of resisting arrest, assault 3rd degree, possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, Powell was held at the Stoddard County Jail. 

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING SHOOTING IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

An investigation is under way in connection to a deadly shooting last week.

According to authorities, a St. Louis man was found dead Friday at a Sikeston residence.

A woman reportedly said that she had shot the man as he attempted to force his way into the home. The name of the man has not been released. 

BUTLER COUNTY SCHOOL PLACES SECOND IN BUCKLE UP PHONE DOWN SHOWDOWN

A Butler County school has won over $1,000 in the AAA Buckle Up Phone Down High School Showdown.

Twin Rivers High School, in Broseley, came in second place statewide in the student safe driving pledge contest.

Twin Rivers had the second highest percentage of student pledge submissions of the total student population and won $1,500 from AAA Missouri to be used for Project Prom, Project Graduation, or similar safety-focused student programs.

BUTLER COUNTY UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI EXTENSION TO HOST SERIES REGARDING ALZHEIMER’S

The Butler County University of Missouri Extension will be teaming up with the Alzheimer’s Association for a series of events beginning next month.

According to officials, the 2022 Alzheimer's Association Series will begin on March 10th and run monthly on the 2nd Thursday from noon to 1 pm through December 8th.

The training series regarding Alzheimer’s and dementia will be located at the extension office on Lindsay Avenue in Poplar Bluff.

Officials say that there is no charge to attend, but seating is limited so attendees must call to reserve attendance for the classes. For more information, or to reserve a seat, call 573-686-8064.

REPAIR PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY ON INTERSTATE 55

Contractor crews will begin work today to improve northbound Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the project includes pavement repairs between Route E and Route 164 on I-55.

Improvements will be completed in various locations and motorists should anticipate a lane reduction with a 12-foot width restriction within each work zone.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 am to 6 pm daily through Saturday, March 5th.

TODAY IS CHAMPIONSHIP FRIDAY AT THE OFC TOURNAMENT

The Championship games are set for the 2022 Ozark Foothills Conference Tournament.

East Carter will take on Greenville in the boys varsity final tonight after both teams picked up victories Thursday night. East Carter defeated Twin Rivers 78 to 47 and Greenville picked up the win over Doniphan 63-61.

In the Junior Varsity semi-final played Thursday night, Twin Rivers beat Doniphan 34-27

Three championship games will be played tonight at the Libla Family Sports Complex on the campus of Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.

The Junior Varsity final will see East Carter take on Twin Rivers at 5 pm. That will be followed by the Girls Championship game between Doniphan and East Carter at 6:30 pm. The Boys Varsity final will be a matchup of East Carter and Greenville at 8 pm.

SEARCH UNDERWAY FOR MAN WANTED ON SEXUAL ABUSE CHARGE OUT OF IRON COUNTY

Officials in Iron County are searching for a man who is wanted on multiple charges, including sexual abuse.

The U.S. Marshals Service tells KWOC News that a reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information leading to the capture of 52 year old Ira Brown, of Viburnum.

Brown is wanted by the Iron County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service on sexual abuse, domestic assault, kidnapping, and weapons charges.

Brown had been charged with possession of machine guns, but was released on bond during the pendency of his case. Authorities believe he fled from supervision after removing his ankle monitor in August of last year.

Brown is a white male, stands 6 feet 2 inches tall, and weighs approximately 178 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. Officials say that Brown should be considered armed and dangerous.

DATE SET FOR 2022 BLACK POWDER RENDEZVOUS

A date has been announced for an annual Southeast Missouri tradition.

According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, the 2022 Old Greenville Black Powder Rendezvous will be held at the Greenville Campground at Wappapello Lake on April 23rd and 24th.

The event is free for the public to attend and there will also be multiple musical performances on April 23rd.

OFFICIALS TO CONDUCT INSPECTION OF WAPPAPELLO DAM

The US Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake will be inspecting the Wappapello dam beginning later this month.

Corps of Engineers officials say that the inspection of the dam, dikes, gatehouse, spillway, and other related structures will begin February 22nd and last for several days.

The purpose of the routine inspection is to inspect all features of the project related to the safety, stability, and operational adequacy of the main dam and appurtenant structures.

During the inspection, the lake level will be lowered approximately one and a half feet below the conservation pool.

TRIVIA NIGHT SCHEDULED TO BENEFIT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR TRC STUDENTS

A Trivia Night will be held in Poplar Bluff to help fund scholarships for Three Rivers College students.

The Three Rivers Endowment Trust will hold its Poplar Bluff Trivia Night fundraiser on February 24th, at the Holiday Inn.

Doors will open for dinner at 5 pm, with trivia starting at 6 pm.

Tables will be $120 for a six-person team and include dinner.

WAPPAPELLO CIVIC CENTER TO HOST VALENTINE’S DANCE

The Wappapello Civic Center will be hosting a Valentine’s Dance this weekend.

Everyone is welcome for the event, which will be from 6 to 9 pm on Saturday.

Admission is seven dollars per person and attendees are also asked to bring a finger food, appetizer, or dessert to share with everybody.

TWO MAYNARD RESIDENTS KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

Two Maynard residents were killed in a single vehicle wreck early Wednesday morning.

According to the Arkansas State Police, the wreck occurred on Highway 115 in Randolph County when a vehicle ran off the highway and rolled before hitting a power pole.

Officials say that the driver of the vehicle, 58 year old Benny Burgess, and a passenger, 63 year old Nita Burgess, were both killed in the crash.

DONIPHAN TO TAKE ON EAST CARTER IN OFC GIRLS FINAL

The Girls Final is set at the 2022 Ozark Foothills Conference Basketball Tournament.

One seed Doniphan will take on three seed East Carter Friday night at the Libla Family Sports Complex on the Three Rivers College campus in Poplar Bluff. Doniphan advanced to the final following their 48-39 win over Neelyville Wednesday night. East Carter reached the final with a 49-44 win over Naylor.

In the lone boys Junior Varsity semi-final game Wednesday night, East Carter beat Greenville 53-33.

The Boys’ Varsity semi-finals will be held tonight in Broseley with East Carter facing Twin Rivers at 6:30 pm and Doniphan taking on Greenville at 8 pm. Those games will be proceeded by the remaining JV Semifinal between Doniphan and Twin Rivers at 5 pm.

JASON SMITH DECIDES AGAINST SENATE BID, WILL SEEK REELECTION TO HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

The United States Congressman from Southeast Missouri has opted out of running for the US Senate.

Congressman Jason Smith announced on social media Wednesday that he will seek reelection to the House of Representatives this year. He has held the seat representing Missouri District Eight since 2013.

There was speculation that Smith would seek the US Senate seat that is currently held by Roy Blunt, who announced last year that he will not seek reelection. 

CRASH IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS LEAVES ONE DEAD

A two vehicle crash Wednesday in Northeast Arkansas resulted in one death.

Officials with the Arkansas State Police tell KWOC News that 25 year old Alexander Richardson, of Wynne, Arkansas, was driving on US Highway 63 near Sedgwick, when his vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a freightliner.

Richardson was killed in the wreck. No injuries were listed for the driver of the freightliner. 

TALL AND SMALL BALL TO BENEFIT AREA FOSTER CHILDREN

Foster Adopt Connect SEMO will be hosting an event this weekend to benefit children in foster care.

The 1st Annual Tall and Small Ball has been scheduled for 5 to 8 pm on Saturday, February 12th at the Westwood Center Wedding Chapel.

The event will feature a night of formal dancing and activities for kids and adults.

POPLAR BLUFF ELKS TO HOST COMEDY NIGHT THIS WEEKEND

An area organization is hosting a comedy night this weekend to raise money for charities.

The Poplar Bluff Elks Comedy night is scheduled for Saturday night. Organizers say that tickets are $30 each and include an all you can eat dinner featuring smoked chicken and pork loin. The dinner will begin at 7 pm.

Four professional comedians will be performing beginning at 8:30 pm.

Profits from the show will go to local vets and scholarships, along with other state and national charities.

POPLAR BLUFF TRAILS COALITION RECEIVES AWARD FROM FOREST SERVICE

The Poplar Bluff Trails Coalition was recently recognized for their work rebuilding trails in the area.

The Trails Coalition has been named the winner of the Restoration Partner Award as a part of the USDA Forest Service 2021 Volunteer and Service Awards.

Through its "Trail Stewards" program, the PBTC has restored more than 54 miles of Forest Service trails in Mark Twain National Forest.

They have also provided stewardship of four trailheads and tackled deferred maintenance work such as painting benches, kiosks, and picnic tables.

SEMIFINAL MATCHUPS SET FOLLOWING DAY TWO OF THE OFC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

The Semifinal matchups are set at the 2022 Ozark Foothills Conference Basketball Tournament.

The host team Twin Rivers took two out of three possible games during Day two of the tournament on Tuesday. The Royal’s Junior Varsity and Varsity boy’s teams both claimed wins from their counterparts in Neelyville. The JV Royals won 50-29, while the Varsity won 50-46.

In the lone Girls game Tuesday, East Carter picked up the win over Twin Rivers 68-45. In the final game of the night the Doniphan varsity boys team defeated Naylor 87-33.

The semi-finals start tonight in Broseley with a JV matchup between East Carter and Greenville at 5 pm. That game will be followed by the two girls semi-finals as Doniphan meets Neelyville at 6:30 pm and Naylor takes on East Carter at 8 pm.

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON HEROIN CHARGE

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested a Poplar Bluff woman on a heroin charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 34 year old Sharon Leeks was arrested Monday on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – heroin as well as a charge of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Leeks also reportedly had a felony warrant out of Stoddard County.

Following the arrest, she was held at the Stoddard County Jail. 

PUBLIC HEARING SCHEDULED FOR TODAY TO DISCUSS VAN BUREN WATER FACILITY IMPROVEMENTS

A public hearing will be held today to discuss water facility improvements in Van Buren.

The City of Van Buren will host the hearing at noon in the City Hall.

The city has secured grant and loan funding through CDBG and USDA to improve the water facilities and is proposing to request additional funding due to price increases, which officials say is a result of COVID-19 related supply chain problems, as well as workforce availability.

The funding will come from the Community Development Block Grant COVID-19 program.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI RESIDENTS BEING SURVEYED ON EARTHQUAKE EVACUATION ROUTES

The Missouri Department of Transportation and the University of Missouri are teaming up on an earthquake research project.

Officials say that the project will assist in modeling evacuation routes, if needed, after an earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

Residents in Butler, Stoddard, New Madrid, Dunklin, and Pemiscot Counties are being invited to assist in the research by completing a short questionnaire.

MAN ARRESTED IN BUTLER COUNTY ON WEAPON AND DRUG CHARGES

An Ellsinore man has been taken into custody in Butler County on weapon and drug charges.

According to authorities, 48 year old Stanley Vest was arrested Tuesday afternoon on felony charges of unlawful possession of an illegal weapon and possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Vest is also facing charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, he was held at the Butler County Jail.

SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK LEAVES ONE DEAD IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A single vehicle wreck in Northeast Arkansas has resulted in the death of a Paragould man.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 34 year old James Fears Jr. was driving on State Highway 358 in rural Greene County Sunday night when his vehicle ran off the icy road and overturned.

Officials say that Fears was ejected during the wreck and died from his injuries. 

GREENVILLE MISSES OUT ON SWEEP AT DAY ONE OF THE OFC TOURNAMENT

The Greenville Bears were close to a sweep during day one of the Ozark Foothills Conference Basketball Tournament.

The Bears took the first two games of the tournament Monday at Twin Rivers High School in Broseley. The Greenville JV Boys defeated the Clearwater JV 48-36. The two schools also met in the varsity boys tournament, with Greenville taking the win 73-44.

Greenville’s attempt at a three game sweep on Monday was thwarted by the Neelyville Lady Tigers in the Girls tournament. The Lady Tigers winning the game 67-48.

Four games are scheduled for today, starting with a boys JV matchup between Twin Rivers and Neelyville at 4 pm, followed by a boys varsity game between the same two schools at 5:30 pm. The girls will take over at 7 pm as East Carter takes on Twin Rivers. The final game of today will be a boys varsity matchup between Doniphan and Naylor at 8:30 pm.

MARGARET HARWELL ART MUSEUM TO HOST EXHIBIT FEATURING BLACK ARTISTS

The Margaret Harwell Art Museum is celebrating black artists for Black History Month.

The Poplar Bluff museum will be hosting a display of multiple black artists through February 28th, including Corey Matthews, Dean Mitchell, Sally Ware, Anthony Williams, and George Young.

An opening reception for the Black History of Southeast Missouri Through Art will be held from 6 to 8 pm on Saturday, February 12th.

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING WEEKEND SHOOTING IN KENNETT 

Authorities are investigating a weekend shooting in Kennett.

Kennett Police Chief Kenny Wilson tells KWOC News that a man was shot near the Chief’s Club Saturday night.

The man refused treatment at the scene but was later taken to a Northeast Arkansas hospital.

Wilson says that a dispute had occurred prior to the shooting and officials know the identity of the shooter.

They are working to contact him as a part of the investigation. 

FIVE ELECTED TO BUTLER COUNTY UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI EXTENSION COUNCIL

Five people have been elected to two year terms on the University of Missouri Extension Council of Butler County.

The newly elected council members include Tawana Ashcraft, Kathryn Clark, Lanny Corcimiglia, Miranda Fickert, and Doug Rose Jr.

Council members are volunteers responsible for maintaining the University of Missouri Extension Center and for planning programs with the faculty and staff in Butler County.

A total of 10 people were on the ballot for this year’s election. 

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI WOMAN FACING MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES FOLLOWING ARREST

Authorities in Southeast Missouri have arrested a Canalou woman on multiple felony charges.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 37 year old Nikki Hubbert was taken into custody Sunday on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine, endangering the welfare of a child, and tampering with evidence.

She is also facing charges of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to maintain the right half of the roadway.

Following the arrest, she was transported to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety.

OFC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT TO BEGIN TODAY

The Ozark Foothills Conference basketball tournament is scheduled to begin this afternoon.

The tournament, featuring seven area schools, was originally scheduled to begin on Saturday at Twin Rivers High School in Broseley, however last week’s winter weather forced the start to be pushed back to today.

There are three games on the docket for today, starting with a boys JV game between Clearwater and Greenville at 5 pm, followed by a boys varsity game between the same two schools at 6:30 pm. The final game of today will be a girls matchup between Greenville and Neelyville at 8 pm.

All 19 games of the tournament will be broadcast live on the Today’s Talk KWOC Facebook page at facebook.com/TodaysTalkKWOC and the River Radio Youtube page at youtube.com/RiverRadioPB.

FATAL HOUSE FIRE UNDER INVESTIGATION IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A fatal house fire is under investigation in Northeast Arkansas.

One person was killed in the fire that happened Friday in Walnut Ridge.

The identity of the deceased has not been released and a cause for the fire is under investigation. 

POPLAR BLUFF TECHNICAL CAREER CENTER TO HOST OPEN HOUSE THIS FRIDAY

The Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center will be hosting an open house this Friday.

According to officials, the event will be from 11 am to 12:30 pm on Friday at the Technical Career Center behind Poplar Bluff High School.

There will also be a building tour of the programs following the reception.

The open house is being held in celebration of Career and Technical Education Month along with the 55th anniversary Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center.

USDA GRANT TO BE USED TO ASSIST RIPLEY COUNTY SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB

A grant from the United States Department of Agriculture will be used to assist an organization in Ripley County.

Antonia Varner with the USDA tells us that $2.7 million in funding was recently awarded to recipients in rural Missouri to increase access to public safety, education, emergency response, and help fund other essential community facilities and equipment.

One of the projects chosen includes a proposal to purchase equipment for the Ripley County Senior Citizens Club in Doniphan.

Equipment to be purchased includes a commercial freezer condenser unit, an ice machine, a stove, an air conditioning unit, and more.

Varner says that the equipment will be used to help serve food to the community, specifically homebound senior citizens.

The grant total for the project is $33,400.

COALITION FOR ROADWAY SAFETY OFFERING GRANTS FOR PROJECT PROM AND GRADUATION

Schools who will be holding Project Prom and Graduation events this year can now apply for grant money to help fund the events.

The Southeast Coalition for Roadway Safety is offering grant funding to local schools that choose student lock-in events for Project Prom or High School graduation. Qualifying schools will receive $200 each to assist with event expenses such as location rental, food or entertainment. 

The Southeast Coalition will be accepting applications through today.

CONTRACTS AWARDED FOR BRIDGE DECK REPLACEMENTS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission has awarded contracts for multiple projects in Southeast Missouri.

An almost $2.4 million dollar project was awarded for a bridge deck replacement on Route 34 over the St. Francis River in Wayne County.

A $3.6 million dollar contract was awarded for a bridge deck replacement on Interstate 55 over Route 62 in Scott County. 

Additional information, including timelines for the projects as well as impacts to traffic, will be released prior to the start of construction.

WINTER STORM RESULTED IN SLICK ROAD CONDITIONS AND SCATTERED POWER OUTAGES

This week’s winter weather left behind treacherous road conditions and scattered power outages.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, troopers in Southeast Missouri worked over 30 crashes on Wednesday alone and assisted over 40 stranded motorists.

One of the crashes was of a commercial vehicle that blocked Eastbound US Highway 60 near Morehouse for over an hour.

Area roads are still slick this morning, especially on side roads, so motorists are asked to use extreme caution if they get out on the roadways. You can check road conditions online at MoDot.org.

Power outages were also reported in numerous areas across Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas.

POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS DONATE $4,000 FOR FOSTER CHILDREN

Students in Poplar Bluff recently collected thousands of dollars for kids in foster care.

According to school officials, students across the Poplar Bluff School District helped collect over $4,000 in coins to ensure area children who recently entered foster care received Christmas presents.

Students chipped in their pocket change during National Adoption Awareness Month as a part of the fundraiser. 

SEVERAL PRESCRIBED BURNS TO BE HELD IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI THROUGH MID-APRIL

Several prescribed burns are scheduled to be conducted in Southeast Missouri this spring.

According to officials with Ozark National Scenic Riverways, preparations are underway for several prescribed burns between early-February and mid-April.

During prescribed burns, park operations will continue as usual, although temporary closure of trails or roads adjacent to the burn unit may be necessary for visitor safety.

The scheduling of the operations is dependent on weather and vegetation meeting certain conditions.

TODAY IS THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER FOR POPLAR BLUFF YOUTH BASKETBALL

Today is the deadline for Poplar Bluff parents to get their children registered for youth basketball.

Officials say that parents can go to the Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation website to register their kids who are in kindergarten through 3rd grade.

The cost to participate is $21, which includes a T-shirt.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE DRUG RELATED CHARGES

A Southeast Missouri man was taken into custody earlier this week on multiple drug related charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 21 year old Gregory Barnes, of Canalou, was taken into custody on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance for methamphetamine and alprazolam as well as a felony charge of delivery or possession of a controlled substance in a jail.

Barnes is also facing charges of possession of marijuana, speeding, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR MUCH OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI, SOME AREAS UNDER ICE STORM WARNING

Winter weather is projected to continue to cross Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas today.

Freezing rain and sleet dropped on the area late Wednesday and throughout the night resulting in slippery road conditions this morning.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for much of Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas, including Butler, Stoddard, and Wayne Counties. Weather officials say that total snow and sleet accumulations of one to five inches is possible.

Pemiscot, New Madrid, and Mississippi Counties are currently under an Ice Storm Warning with total ice accumulations possibly getting up to three-quarters of an inch. 

CORNING MAN KILLED IN TWO VEHICLE WRECK

A wreck Tuesday afternoon in Northeast Arkansas has claimed the life of a Corning man.

According to the Arkansas State Police, a vehicle driven by 24 year old Nigeria Hooks, of Jonesboro, failed to yield at a stop sign in rural Greene County and pulled into the path of a vehicle driven by 49 year old William Dawsey, of Corning.

Officials say that Dawsey died from injuries he sustained in the wreck. Hooks was injured and transported to an area hospital. 

TEMPERATURES EXPECTED TO DROP INTO THE TEENS TONIGHT

Temperatures are expected to drop harshly throughout the rest of the week in Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service, overnight tonight the temperature in Poplar Bluff is expected to bottom out at around 15 degrees, before rebounding to the lower 30’s during the day on Friday.

Warming centers have been set up at numerous locations in Southeast Missouri, including the Butler County Health Department and First United Methodist Church in Poplar Bluff as well as the Ripley County Health Center in Doniphan, and the Dexter Library.

VIRTUAL HEARING SCHEDULED FOR TODAY TO DISCUSS FUTURE INTERSTATE 57

The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold a virtual public hearing today to discuss a proposed project to upgrade U.S. Route 67 in Butler County to four lanes in preparation for Future I-57.  

The hearing will be held from 4 to 6 pm and officials say that the same presentation will be delivered at both 4 and 5 pm to provide attendees with multiple opportunities to join the discussion.

Throughout the online hearing, there will be opportunities for attendees to ask questions or share comments.

WINTER STORM WARNING TO GO INTO EFFECT AT NOON

A Winter Storm warning will go into effect for Southeast Missouri at noon today.

Officials with the National Weather Service in Paducah say that heavy mixed precipitation is possible. Total snow and sleet accumulations of 2 to 5 inches, along with ice accumulations of one tenth of an inch are possible with some locations seeing higher amounts.

With this storm power outages and tree damage are possible due to the ice. Officials say that travel could be nearly impossible and should be avoided until absolutely necessary.

The warning is currently set to be in effect until 6 am on Friday.

Missouri Governor Mike Parson issued a State of Emergency yesterday to prepare state resources in advance of the storm.

TAKE STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR HOME DURING WINTER WEATHER STORM

With winter weather coming into the area followed by temperatures dropping close to the single digits later this week, have you taken steps to make sure that your home is ready?

According to the American Red Cross, you can open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing to help prevent your pipes from freezing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children. 

When you notice the temperatures getting below freezing, you can also start a cold water drip from your faucets.

In the event you were to lose power, you can close blinds or curtains to keep in some heat. Also remember to wear layers of loose fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. Eating and drinking can also help you stay warm as food provides energy to warm the body. 

STODDARD COUNTY PROSECUTOR TO SEEK DEATH PENALTY IN MURDER CASE

Officials in Stoddard County have announced that they will be seeking the death penalty in a murder case from last year.

Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Russ Oliver tells KWOC News that he intends to seek the death penalty for Boyd Lippoldt in connection to the November 5th, 2021 homicide of Frank Morris, near Dexter.

The case is currently in the Circuit Court of Cape Girardeau County on a change of venue from Stoddard County.

THREE INJURED IN EARLY MORNING WRECK NEAR DONIPHAN

Three Doniphan residents were injured in a wreck early Tuesday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred when a vehicle driven by 31 year old Amber Harris crossed the center line of Missouri Highway 21, near Doniphan, and struck a truck head on.

Harris suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

Two men in the truck were also seriously injured and flown to a Memphis hospital.

WINTER STORM WATCH TO GO INTO EFFECT WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON

An incoming storm system is bringing with it increased chances of winter weather.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for the area that will be in effect from Wednesday afternoon through late Thursday night. Officials say that heavy mixed precipitation is possible.

Total snow and sleet accumulations of 1 to 4 inches, and ice accumulations of two tenths to four tenths of an inch are possible with this system.

We also have heavy rain expected to begin this evening and tonight in the area.

Area Engineer Dave Wyman with the Missouri Department of Transportation says that this will make it hard to prepare the roads for the winter weather as any treatments used will just be washed away by the rain.

Some treatments will be attempted on minor roads that will not be the priority for snow plow crews at the beginning of the storm. 

UPGRADES UNDERWAY AT KAY PORTER THEATER IN POPLAR BLUFF

A Poplar Bluff theater is in the process of receiving upgrades.

According to Poplar Bluff school officials, work is underway for the Kay Porter Theater to receive a complete overhaul of its control booth.

During its December meeting, the Poplar Bluff R-I Board of Education unanimously approved a bid to replace the theater’s audio, visual and lighting systems.

The late Kay Porter, a local philanthropist, left $1 million to the Poplar Bluff High School Drama Club among other entities in town when she passed away in 2005. Money from the fund is being used for the renovations.

Officials say that just shy of $200,000 remains in the fund. 

TWO SERIOUSLY INJURED IN RIPLEY COUNTY WRECK

Two people were seriously injured in a wreck Monday in Ripley County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle driven by 87 year old William Plunk, of Doniphan, reportedly failed to yield on Highway 142 and was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

Plunk, along with a passenger in his vehicle, suffered serious injuries and were transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

No injuries were listed for the driver of the second vehicle. 

SENIOR TAX CLINIC TO BEGIN TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

An area organization is holding a tax clinic beginning today in Butler County.

The tax clinic by AmeriCorps Senior will be held at the Twin Towers on Hazel Street in Poplar Bluff for people who are 65 and older, low income, or 100 percent disabled.

A Tax Clinic will also be held in Carter County starting on February 2nd.

TWO STODDARD COUNTY ROADS TO BE REDUCED TODAY FOR EDGE RUT REPAIRS

Two roads in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform edge rut repairs.

Missouri Route 153 in Stoddard County will be reduced between Route D and Missouri 114 from 8 am to 3 pm.  

Route TT in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane from US 60 to County Road 642 between 8:30 am and 3 pm.

Both work zones will be marked with signs and motorists are urged to use caution while traveling near the area.  

TREE TRIMMING PROJECT TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY ON DUNKLIN COUNTY ROAD

Route J in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews trim trees along the roadway.

The work zone is located from Route WW to Teresa Drive.

Work will take place weather permitting, from 7 am to 3 pm through Thursday.

POPLAR BLUFF BUSINESSMAN CHOSEN AS 2021 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

A Poplar Bluff businessman and car dealership owner has been chosen as the 2021 Citizen of the Year.

Larry Hillis received the award Saturday during the Greater Poplar Bluff Area Chamber of Commerce Banquet at the Black River Coliseum.

During the banquet, the Chamber also gave the 2021 Ambassador of the Year Award to Morgan McIntosh, of Downtown Poplar Bluff, Incorporated. 

UNIDENTIFIED HUMAN REMAINS FOUND IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Authorities are working to identify human remains that were discovered earlier this month in Southeast Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control and the Shannon County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of human remains on January 12th near Winona.

Sergeant Jeff Kinder with the Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that the victim is a female, approximately 55 years of age, and has two legible tattoos. Pictures of the tattoos are available on the Highway Patrol’s website

An autopsy performed on the remains determined the cause of death was homicide.

The Highway Patrol is requesting the public’s help in determining the person’s identity and any information that could be pertinent to the investigation.

SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK LEAVES ONE DEAD

One person is dead following a single vehicle wreck early Friday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 48 year old Staci Bersine, of Sikeston, was driving on US Highway 61 in Kewanee when her vehicle ran off the roadway and struck a tree.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by New Madrid County Coroner George Delisle.

The Ozark Foothills Conference basketball tournament is scheduled to begin this weekend.

The tournament, featuring seven area schools, will begin on Saturday, February 5th at Twin Rivers High School in Broseley.

The championship games will be played on Friday, February 11th at the Libla Family Sports Complex on the campus of Three Rivers College.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI SHERIFF HOSPITALIZED WITH COVID-19 AND PNEUMONIA

A Southeast Missouri sheriff has been hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19.

According to the Iron County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Jeff Burkett was exposed to COVID-19 from an inmate and has also developed double lung pneumonia. He is currently in critical condition at an area hospital. 

Chris Barton is serving as the Acting Sheriff. 

BUTLER COUNTY ROAD REPAIRS SET FOR TODAY

Highway 53 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of Highway 53 to be reduced is located from County Road 218 to Strawberry Lane.

Work is scheduled to take place from 9 am to 3 pm.

GRAND JURY DECLINES TO FILE CHARGES IN DEXTER DEATH INVESTIGATION

A grand jury has declined to press charges in a Dexter death investigation.

Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Russell Oliver tells KWOC News that the grand jury unanimously returned a no true bill in the death of Christopher Reed on November 29th.

Oliver says that he fully supports the decision and thanked the grand jury for their service. 

USDA GRANT TO BE USED TO RENOVATE POPLAR BLUFF CONFERENCE CENTER

A grant from the United States Department of Agriculture will be used to renovate a Poplar Bluff conference center.

Antonia Varner with the USDA tells us that $2.7 million in funding was recently awarded to recipients in rural Missouri to increase access to public safety, education, emergency response, and help fund other essential community facilities and equipment.

One of the projects included is to renovate the Greater Poplar Bluff Area Chamber of Commerce's conference center. Some of the planned renovations include converting the center to LED lighting and installing new appliances.

The facility has held meetings, training events, blood drives, as well as served as the official disaster headquarters for FEMA during the 2017 Flood Disaster Recovery mission.

The grant total for the project is $21,000.

VEHICLE STRIKES RESIDENCE IN WAPPAPELLO, ONE INJURED

A woman suffered minor injuries when a vehicle struck a residence in Wayne County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 79 year old Wappapello woman was driving on Williams road in Wappapello when she reportedly failed to stop at an intersection, ran off the right side of the roadway, and struck a residence.

The driver was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

No information was released on how much damage the residence sustained. 

PRIORITY DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID

The deadline is quickly approaching for future and current college students to complete their free application for federal student aid for the 2022-2023 school year.

Officials at Three Rivers College say that students should complete the application by February 1st to receive priority consideration for federal and state grants and scholarships.

TWO ARRESTED ON DRUG TRAFFICKING CHARGES IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Two Wisconsin residents have been taken into custody in Southeast Missouri on drug trafficking charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 37 year old Calvin Smith, and 27 year old Adrianna Powers, both of Kenosha, Wisconsin, were each arrested Wednesday afternoon on charges of unlawful use of a weapon and felony drug trafficking – 1st degree.

Smith is also facing a charge of felon in possession of a firearm. 

ARKANSAS MAN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO SHOOTING IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

An investigation into a non-fatal shooting in the Missouri Bootheel has resulted in the arrest of an Arkansas man.

Steele Police Chief Billy Stanfield tells KWOC News that 33 year old Carey Graham, of Round Pond, Arkansas, has been arrested and charged with assault 1st, unlawful use of a weapon, and armed criminal action.

The charges stem from an incident on January 13th where a woman was reportedly lying-in bed when someone fired shots into the house, with one bullet striking the woman.

When Graham was arrested, police recovered a firearm that is believed to have been used in the shooting.

OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING IN MADISON COUNTY

One person is dead following an officer involved shooting in Southeast Missouri.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that shortly after 5 pm on Tuesday, a trooper responded to an emergency call of a sexual assault in progress in rural Madison County. The caller said that the suspect was armed with a knife.

Upon arrival, the trooper contacted the suspect and a physical altercation ensued. During the altercation, the trooper fired a single shot which hit the suspect.

The suspect, who has been identified as 58 year old Ronnie Walker, of Marble Hill, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Madison County Coroner, Collin Follis.

Parrott says that an investigation is ongoing by the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control. The name of the trooper is not being released at this time. 

DRUG INVESTIGATION RESULTS IN MULTIPLE ARRESTS IN CARTER COUNTY

A Carter County drug investigation has resulted in multiple arrests.

Officers with the South Central Drug Task Force, in coordination with the Missouri State Highway Patrol and Carter County Sheriff’s Department, concluded a series of long-term narcotics investigations early Wednesday morning.

Five individuals have been arrested for delivery of a controlled substance as a part of the investigation. The individuals have been identified as 52 year old David Emery and 43 year old Wayne Robbins, of Ellsinore, along with 63 year old Jim Bessent, 59 year old Albert Brandon, and 59 year old Douglas Wells, all of Grandin.

Officials say that all five have been charged in the Carter County Circuit Court. 

ONE ARRESTED AFTER WRECK LEAVES TWO INJURED IN BUTLER COUNTY

A Poplar Bluff man is facing multiple charges following a wreck Tuesday evening that left two people injured in Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred south of Poplar Bluff when a vehicle driven by 31 year old Brandon Culberson, crossed the center of Business 67 and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on.

Culberson received moderate injuries in the wreck, while the driver of the second vehicle suffered minor injuries. Both were transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

According to an arrest report from the Highway Patrol, Culberson is facing multiple charges including driving while intoxicated and failure to drive on the right half of the roadway. 

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION AWARDED GRANT TO SERVE VULNERABLE CHILDREN, FAMILIES

A local nonprofit organization has been awarded a federal grant to serve residents in Doniphan and Poplar Bluff.

Great Circle has been awarded $38,500 in federal CARES Act funding to expand programing and client access at its facilities that serve vulnerable children and families in southeast Missouri.

Great Circle will use the grant to increase programing for the Women’s Crisis Center in Doniphan and the Emergency Youth Shelter in Poplar Bluff.

It also will be used to complete outdoor spaces at both facilities, as well as add a parking lot, stairs and a ramp at the Women’s Crisis Center.

Officials say that the improvements and program upgrades will be completed by August 31st. More information is available at GreatCircle.org. 

KIDS LAWN CARE CLASS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation is holding a session today for children to learn about Lawn Care and Maintenance.

The course, for kids ages 10 to 15, will help participants learn hands-on skills of lawn care and develop skills that are useful for a first job in the area.

The session is scheduled for 4:30 to 5:30 pm at Hendrickson Park in Poplar Bluff. Officials say that parents are welcome to join or stay in the parking lot.

NEW MADRID COUNTY ROAD CLOSED FOR EROSION WORK

Route WW in New Madrid County will be closed over the next week while Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform erosion work.

The section of roadway being closed is located from Route AB to County Road 740.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 am to 2 pm daily through Wednesday, February 2nd.

ONE INJURED IN MOTORCYCLE WRECK NEAR GATEWOOD

An Arkansas man has been flown to an area hospital following a motorcycle wreck in Ripley County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 51 year old Edwards Foster, of Williford, Arkansas, was driving a motorcycle on Highway 142, near Gatewood, when his vehicle ran off the side of the road and overturned.

Foster suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a Jonesboro hospital. 

CHEERLEADERS HONORED BY POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL BOARD

The state champion Poplar Bluff Mules competitive Cheerleading team was recently honored by the Poplar Bluff Board of Education.

The Mules won the 2021 Missouri Cheerleading Coaches Association Class 4 Small Squad State Championship, which was held in Cape Girardeau last month.

The team was recognized during the Board of Education meeting last week for bringing home the state championship.

APPLICATIONS TO START NEXT MONTH FOR MDC MANAGED TURKEY HUNTS

Applications are set to begin next month for the upcoming managed turkey hunt.

Missouri Department of Conservation officials say that Missouri turkey hunters can apply online during February for the 2022 spring managed turkey hunts at mdc.mo.gov.

Drawing results will be posted starting March 15th.

The spring turkey hunting youth portion will be April 9th and 10th with the regular spring season running April 18th through May 8th.

PIEDMONT TO HOST PUBLIC HEARING TO DISCUSS IMPROVEMENTS AT AREA PARK

The city of Piedmont will be holding a public hearing next month to discuss improvements at an area park.

A public hearing is scheduled for 4:45 pm on February 8th at the Piedmont City Hall to discuss the city’s interest in applying for the Community Development Block Grant COVID-19 program for Park Improvements in Ash Park.

The City is proposing to complete a replacement of an existing pavilion and the addition of walkways, benches, trash cans, and more. The total project cost is estimated at $120,000.

A Trivia Night will be held in February to help fund scholarships for Dexter Three Rivers College students.

The Three Rivers Endowment Trust will hold its Dexter Trivia Night fundraiser on February 17th, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dexter.

FARMERS INVITED TO APPLY FOR GRANTS TO REDUCE ENERGY COSTS

Missouri farmers have the opportunity to save some money while reducing energy.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has announced it is offering grants to help agricultural operations reduce energy costs.

The program reimburses agricultural operations up to 75 percent of the purchase cost of qualifying cost-saving energy-efficient equipment and systems - up to $7,500 per applicant.

Examples of eligible projects include solar-powered watering systems and fencers, irrigation upgrades, GPS systems for tractors and applicators, ventilation, and insulation.

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE LADY RAIDERS BASKETBALL TEAM RANKED NUMBER 1 IN THE COUNTRY

The Three Rivers College women’s basketball team is the new top team in the country.

The undefeated Lady Raiders are unanimously ranked number 1 in the NJCAA Division 1 Rankings that were published on Monday. This is the first time that TRC has reached the top spot in the NJCAA Rankings.

The Lady Raiders have won 18 straight games to start the season, with their most recent win coming last night against St. Louis Community College.

The Lady Raiders are the only undefeated team remaining in NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball. 

BITTER WIND CHILLS COMING UP TOMORROW MORNING

After a few days of mild weather, bitterly cold temperatures are coming back to Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service, we should expect wind chill values to get close to zero between 3 am and 9 am on Wednesday.

Actual air temperatures will bottom out from 5 to 15 degrees across the area. Officials say that everyone should dress in layers and wear a hat or hood.

Also remember to protect pets and vulnerable property, such as exposed pipes. 

SEMO SPORTSMAN’S BANQUET SCHEDULED FOR MARCH

Preparations are underway for the annual Southeast Missouri Sportsman’s Association Banquet coming up in March.

The banquet will begin at 5 pm Saturday, March 26th, at the American Legion on PP Highway in Poplar Bluff.

Organizers say there will be a chicken dinner available for $7 a plate as well as entertainment and door prizes. Proceeds from the event will go to fund the Kid’s Fish and Fun Day. 

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI POLICE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES DONATION OF K-9 BODY ARMOR

A Police Department in Southeast Missouri has announced that they have received a donation of body armor for their four-legged officer.

Officials say that Kennett Police Department K9 officer Rocky received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

Vested Interest in K9s is a charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States.

CORPS OF ENGINEERS TO HOST EAGLE VIEWING EVENT

The US Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake is hosting an event next month to give area residents the chance to view and learn about our national bird.

The Winter Watch eagle viewing event will be held from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, February 5th at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitor Center.

Participants will have the opportunity to look for eagles, other migratory waterfowl, and birds at the designated viewing stations at Wappapello Lake. Fact sheets and information will be given to all participants.

BOATING SAFETY COURSES TO BE OFFERED BY MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY PATROL

The Missouri State Highway Patrol will be hosting boating safety courses this spring.

Colonel Eric Olson tells KWOC News that the Patrol is offering the courses to inform and motivate boaters to prepare for the boating season.

Missouri law requires everyone born after January 1st, 1984, who operates a vessel on Missouri lakes to possess a certified boating safety education card and photo ID. This includes personal watercraft operators.

The classroom courses provided by the Missouri State Highway Patrol are free, but registration is required and the boater ID card costs $15.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK IN WAYNE COUNTY

A Patterson man is dead following a single vehicle wreck over the weekend.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 25 year old Grant Bell was driving on Highway 34, near Piedmont, when his vehicle ran off the side of the road and struck a tree.

Bell, who was reportedly not wearing a safety device, was ejected during the wreck and later pronounced dead at the scene by Wayne County Coroner Mike Allen. 

DEXTER MAN ARRESTED ON STATUTORY SODOMY WARRANT

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested an area man on a statutory sodomy warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 42 year old Michael Hamilton, of Dexter, was recently arrested on a Stoddard county warrant for three counts of statutory sodomy or attempted statutory sodomy and two counts of sexual misconduct involving a child under 15.

He was held in the Stoddard County Jail on a $35,000 cash only bond. 

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI FFA CHAPTER AWARDED FUNDS FOR SERVICE PROJECTS 

A Southeast Missouri FFA Chapter has been chosen to receive grant funds for their community service projects this year.

The Portageville School District FFA is one of six FFA chapters in Missouri chosen to receive $500 toward their projects, which may include upgrades or additions to existing facilities, grounds or buildings, such as fairgrounds, parks or community centers used by local organizations.

Eight Missouri 4-H clubs also received the grant.

The money is coming from the Department of Agriculture’s 2021 Building Our American Communities grant program.

JOPLIN MAN ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED SEXUAL ASSAULT OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI CHILD

A Joplin man is in custody for the alleged sexual assault of a Southeast Missouri child.

According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, on Friday deputies responded to a check on the welfare of a female juvenile who was reported missing out of East Prairie.

During the investigation, it was found that 19 year old Grant Henson had driven five hours to East Prairie. He picked up the girl and drove her back to his residence in Joplin where she was held against her will and sexually assaulted.

Henson was arrested and charges were filed by the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office for kidnapping 1st and sodomy 1st. No bond was set in the case. 

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR THE 2022 OPTIMIST SOCCER LEAGUE IN POPLAR BLUFF

Registration is now open for the 2022 Poplar Bluff Optimist Soccer League.

Registration for youth in kindergarten through sixth grades will be open through February 25th and the registration fee is $20.

PEMISCOT COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED THIS WEEK

Route C in Pemiscot County will be closed this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway. 

The section of roadway being closed is located from County Road 418 to County Road 426.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Friday, from 7 am to 3 pm each day.

TWIN RIVERS R-10 SUPERINTENDENT TO RESIGN AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR

A search is underway for a new superintendent for the Twin Rivers R-10 School District.

Twin Rivers School Board President Jeff Arnold tells KWOC News that Dr. Ben Johnson informed the school board Thursday evening that he will be resigning at the end of the school year.

Johnson has served as Twin Rivers Superintendent since July 2020. He is reportedly resigning to seek other opportunities. 

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE ALUMNI REUNION SET FOR SATURDAY

A whole day of events is planned for this Saturday for the 2022 Three Rivers College Alumni Reunion.

College officials say the day will start at 7 am with the Pancake Breakfast at the Bess Activity Center.

There is also an Alumni Art Exhibit, a virtual concert by the TRC Music Department, and the Alumni Star Award presentation planned for Saturday.

The TRC men and women’s basketball teams will also be hosting State Fair Community College Saturday night.

DATE ANNOUNCED FOR 15TH ANNUAL TASTE OF THE TOWN

A date has been announced for the 15th Annual Taste of the Town in Poplar Bluff.

The Boys and Girls Club of the Heartland is presenting the event starting at 6 pm on Thursday, May 12th at the Black River Coliseum.

Taste of the Town will feature area restaurants, caterers, and beverage vendors and allow attendees to sample their favorite dishes and drinks.

CHILI COOK OFF TO BE HELD TO BENEFIT AREA SCHOOL BAND 

The Greenville High School Rockin Bears are holding a chili cook off in February to help raise money for a trip to Ohio.

The Road to the Rock-off Chili Cook-Off has been scheduled for 5 to 8 pm on February 26th at the Greenville Junior High Gym.

The cost is $15 to enter your chili. If you just want to eat, it is $10 for adults and $6 for children 10 and under.

Proceeds from the event will fund the band’s trip to the Tri-C High School Rock Off on March 5th at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. 

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN ARRESTED ON METH CHARGE

A Poplar Bluff woman is facing multiple felony charges following her arrest in Stoddard County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 51 year old Serena Barnes was taken into custody Thursday morning on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine drug paraphernalia.

Barnes also reportedly had a warrant out of Butler County.

Following the arrest, she was held at the Stoddard County Jail. 

FREE PESTICIDE PICK UP TO BE HELD IN PORTAGEVILLE

State officials have announced a free pesticide collection event will be held in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the collection event has been scheduled for March 12th at the Fisher Delta Research, Extension, and Education Center in Portageville.

Attendees can drop off unwanted pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides among other items.

MOTORISTS ASKED TO WATCH FOR SLICK ROADS

The area received winter weather yesterday which has resulted in possible slick roads for this morning.

Southeast Missouri received sleet, snow, and freezing rain over the course of Wednesday evening.

With temperatures falling into the teens overnight, there is the possibility of ice on area roads as you start your morning commute.

While driving, remember to buckle up and give yourself extra time to get to your destination.

MAN ARRAIGNED IN BUTLER COUNTY ON CHILD MOLESTATION CHARGE

An area man is facing a child molestation charge out of Butler County.

According to Missouri Case Net, 39 year old Jimmy Farrar, of Ellsinore, was arraigned earlier this week on charges of statutory rape or attempted statutory rape – 1st degree, child molestation – 1st degree, and two counts of statutory sodomy or attempted statutory sodomy with a person less than 12 years of age.

The charges stem from incidents that allegedly occurred last year.

No bond was set in the case. 

VIRTUAL HEARING SCHEDULED FOR EARLY NEXT MONTH TO DISCUSS FUTURE INTERSTATE 57

The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold a virtual public hearing early next month to discuss a proposed project to upgrade U.S. Route 67 in Butler County to four lanes in preparation for Future I-57.  

The hearing will be held on Thursday, February 3rd from 4 to 6 p.m., with formal presentations beginning at 4 and 5 p.m.

Officials say that the same presentation will be delivered at both 4 and 5 pm to provide attendees with multiple opportunities to join the discussion.

Throughout the online hearing, there will be opportunities for attendees to ask questions or share comments. Attendees can join the virtual public hearing on February 3rd by visiting MoDOT.org/FutureI57.  

FIRE TRUCK OVERTURNS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A fire truck overturned Tuesday in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the fire truck was on Highway N in Scott County when it swerved to miss a vehicle, ran off the roadway, and overturned.

The incident occurred around 4 pm.

The driver of the fire truck suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital. 

TAKE STEPS TO PREVENT YOUR WATER PIPES FROM FREEZING

With temperatures getting down to the low teens and wind chills getting below zero, are you taking precautions to make sure your pipes don’t freeze?

According to the American Red Cross, you can open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.

When you notice the temperatures getting below freezing, start a cold water from your faucets.

Keeping water moving through your system can help prevent your pipes from freezing.

FREEZING RAIN AND SNOW EXPECTED TONIGHT

A sharp temperature drop tonight is expected to bring with it chances of freezing rain and snow.

According to the National Weather Service our area has chances of receiving freezing rain starting this afternoon.

The rain and freezing rain is expected to transition to sleet and snow through the evening before gradually ending.

Temperatures are expected to drop to the lower teens tonight with wind chill values possibly getting below 0.

Anyone who will be driving tonight is urged to be cautious and watch for slick conditions. 

ONE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WRECK NEAR GREENVILLE

A Greenville man was seriously injured in a Tuesday afternoon wreck.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 46 year old Joshua White was driving on Highway D, near Greenville, when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck another vehicle.

White suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital. No injuries were listed for the driver of the second vehicle. 

DONIPHAN MAN SENTENCED TO OVER A DECADE IN PRISON

A Doniphan man is facing over a decade in prison for an enticement charge.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 35 year old Joshua Damon was sentenced Tuesday to 148 months in federal prison following his guilty plea to attempted enticement of a minor.

The charge stems from an investigation in which a law enforcement officer, posing in an undercover capacity as a 14-year-old boy, began communicating with Damon on a social media platform.

During the communications, Damon made repeated requests to meet the minor in person for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity.

Officials say that after serving the 148-month sentence, Damon was ordered to be placed on a lifetime term of supervised release. Damon will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.

ACCIDENTAL EMERGENCY ALERT REFERENCES COMIC BOOK VILLAIN 

Missouri residents with smartphones got an accidental emergency alert on Tuesday that gave people thoughts of a famous comic book villain.

The alert went out shortly before 5 pm giving the description of a purple and green vehicle from Gotham City, Missouri, with a license of U KID ME, referencing The Joker from the Batman comics.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says that there was no alert and it was meant to be a test message. 

HUNTERS HARVEST ALMOST 300,000 TOTAL DEER DURING HUNTING SEASON

Missouri's 2021-2022 deer-hunting season has come to an end and state officials say that hunters harvested almost 300,000 deer.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, the total deer harvest for the season was 293,670. Of the deer harvested, 143,049 were antlered bucks, 26,599 were button bucks, and 124,022 were does.

The total was a slight decrease from the previous season’s total of 297,214.

MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY PATROL URGES CITIZENS TO BE SAFE AROUND WATER DURING COLDER WEATHER

With temperatures forecast to drop this week, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is urging area residents to be safe around Missouri’s many lakes and rivers.

According to the Highway Patrol, most boaters wear more clothing this time of year, so the proper wearing of life jackets and using caution to avoid falling overboard is even more important.

Lifejacket use becomes even more important in cold water because hypothermia can quickly rob the body of the ability to perform the most basic tasks and drowning is always a concern.

If you wind up taking an unexpected plunge into cold water, it is vital to get out of the water and into dry clothes as soon as possible. If dry clothes are not an option, leave the wet ones on. Even wet clothes will offer some insulation and trap body heat.

A warm drink can be given to someone suffering from hypothermia as long as they are conscious. Hypothermia can be deadly even if you are wearing a lifejacket, so officials say it is important to never go boating alone in the winter.

WAYNE COUNTY HOUSE FIRE RESULTS IN ONE DEATH

A fire early Monday morning in Wayne County has resulted in one death.

42 year old Melissa Dellinger died following a fire at a home near Wappapello.

Two other people who were in the house at the time were able to escape. Authorities are investigating a possible cause for the fire. 

VOTING STARTED FOR BUTLER COUNTY UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI EXTENSION COUNCIL

Voting has started to determine who will serve on the Butler County University of Missouri Extension Council.

Officials say that a total of 10 people are running for five spots on the council. Only Butler County residents who are 18 or older are allowed to vote.

ARKANSAS STATE REPRESENTATIVE ANNOUNCES HE WILL NOT BE RUNNING FOR RE-ELECTION

A northeast Arkansas state lawmaker said Monday that he will not run for reelection to his state House seat.

Republican Representative Joe Jett, of Success, said in a statement that he wants to spend more time working on his family farm and with his family.

Jett’s House District 56 includes Clay County and portions of Greene, Randolph, and Lawrence counties.

He was elected as a Democrat and began his first term in 2013. He switched to the Republican Party in 2016. His current term ends on January 1st, 2023.

16TH ANNUAL CHILI COOK-OFF SET FOR FEBRUARY 26TH

A date has been set for the Mason-Dixon Chili Society’s 16th annual Chili Cook-Off.

The event will be held from 11 am to 1 pm on Saturday, February 26th at the Black River Coliseum and admission is free. A cook’s party will be held the day before the event.

The participation fee is $100 per booth if you register by February 12th. Proceeds from the Cook-Off go to benefit the United Gospel Rescue Mission.

VETERANS WARNING OF SCAMMER IMPERSONATING THE MISSOURI VETERANS COMMISSION

The Missouri Veterans Commission is warning veterans to be on the lookout for scam phone calls.

According to the commission, an individual impersonating a Missouri Veterans Service Officer has called several Veterans who had left voicemail messages with the MVC HQ main phone number.

Officials say the fraudulent activity is suspected to have taken place between January 10th and January 13th.

If you receive a suspicious call from someone representing themselves as an employee of the Missouri Veterans Commission, officials say that you should not share any personal information with the caller. You can report the call by emailing movets@mvc.dps.mo.gov.

PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Missouri Route 153 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route 60 to Route D.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Friday, from 8 am to 2:30 pm each day.
