MAN SHOT MULTIPLE TIMES IN POPLAR BLUFF

An investigation is underway after a man was shot multiple times in Poplar Bluff.

Lieutenant Danny Hicks with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that officers responded to a report of a gunshot victim Tuesday evening near Munch N Pump on Sycamore Street.

At the scene, officers found an 18 year old male who had been shot multiple times. The victim was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital with what is believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

No suspect is in custody at this time. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Lieutenant Hicks at 573-785-5776.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN SENTNECED ON MURDER CHARGE

A Poplar Bluff man is facing almost 20 years in prison on a murder charge.

According to Missouri Case Net, Kahlil Gregory Smith was sentenced this week to 18 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections for both 2nd degree murder and armed criminal action. The two sentences are to run concurrently.

Smith was arrested in April of 2019 in connection to the shooting death of 39 year old Daniel Carroll, of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas.

Smith entered a guilty plea on the two counts in September. 

JOHN J PERSHING VA MEDICAL CENTER TO UPGRADE INFRASTRUCTURE THIS WEEKEND

The John J. Pershing VA Medical Center will be undergoing some upgrades this weekend.

The hospital will be shutting down power to much of its medical center on Saturday to modernize the infrastructure.

This will cause the urgent care and pharmacy to be closed at the medical center that day. Officials say that the phone system will be down as well, so if a veteran needs to dial in a prescription refill request, it will need to be done before or after Saturday.

POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL TO HOST ROBOTICS MEET THIS WEEKEND 

Seven teams from schools around Southeast Missouri will be coming to Poplar Bluff this weekend for the Kickin’ It with the Mules Robotics Meet.

According to Poplar Bluff Robotics Coach Kathy Miller, the meet will be from noon to 2 pm Saturday at Poplar Bluff High School.

Spectators can enjoy the meet for free, but everyone must wear a mask to attend. 

NO BOATING CRASHES OR DROWNINGS REPORTED OVER THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY IN MISSOURI

The state of Missouri had nine people die in traffic crashes during the Thanksgiving holiday period.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, there were a total of 457 crashes during the counting period, resulting in 114 injuries as well as nine fatalities. One of the fatalities was in Southeast Missouri.

Troopers also made 125 DWI arrests and 72 drug arrests.

The counting period ran from 6 pm on Wednesday, November 24th through 11:59 pm on Sunday, November 28th.

Officials say there were no boating crashes or drownings reported across the state. 

PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO FORCE CLOSURE OF NEW MADRID COUNTY ROAD

Route WW in New Madrid County will be closed through next week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

According to officials, the section of roadway to be closed is located from Route AB to County Road 740.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7:30 am to 2 pm daily, through Friday, December 10th.

JUVENILE RECOVERING AFTER BEING STRUCK BY A VEHICLE IN DEXTER

A juvenile is recovering after being hit by a vehicle last week.

According to the Dexter Police Department, on November 26th, a seven year old male juvenile ran out onto Stoddard Street and was struck by a car.

The juvenile suffered injuries to his abdomen, left arm, and face. He was treated on scene by EMS and transported to a local medical facility.

Police spoke with the juvenile’s family on Tuesday, who reported that he was doing fine and is recovering well.

Officials say that the incident was an unfortunate accident and no charges will be filed. 

FIRST MIDWEST BANK OF POPLAR BLUFF TO MERGE WITH FIRST MIDWEST BANK OF THE OZARKS

Two area banks will be merging this week.

In a letter posted online, President and CEO of First Midwest Bank, Joey McLane, announced that First Midwest Bank of Poplar Bluff and First Midwest Bank of the Ozarks will merge on Friday.

McLane says that the combined organization will retain the name of First Midwest Bank of the Ozarks because they believe it is most reflective of their growing geographical locations.

2021 RIVER RADIO LIGHTED CHRISTMAS PARADE IS THIS FRIDAY

Parade lights will be shining bright in Downtown Poplar Bluff this Friday for the 2021 River Radio Lighted Christmas Parade.

The deadline to get your entry in for this year’s parade has been extended to Friday at noon, with the parade scheduled for 6 pm that night. Entry forms are available on our Facebook page and website.

The parade route this year will run from Highway 142 at McDonalds through downtown Poplar Bluff before looping back and ending at the Black River Coliseum. Line-up will begin at 4:30 pm at the Old Hydro Adventure Water Park.

YOUNG HUNTERS HARVEST OVER 3,000 DEER DURING LATE YOUTH PORTION

Young Missouri hunters took over three thousand deer during the late youth portion of the 2021 deer hunting season.

Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation shows that young hunters ages 6 through 15 harvested 3,477 deer during Missouri’s late youth portion which ran from November 26th to the 28th.

Of the deer harvested, 1,470 were antlered bucks, 383 were button bucks, and 1,624 were does.

This year’s number was down around 500 deer from last year’s harvest total for the late youth portion.

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN FACING MULTIPLE DRUG CHARGES FOLLOWING ARREST

A Poplar Bluff woman is facing multiple drug charges following her arrest over the weekend.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 40 year old Sarah Waters was taken into custody Sunday night on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of liquid morphine, and possession of a controlled substance in a correctional facility.

Waters also reportedly had a felony Butler County warrant for burglary 1st degree.

She was held at the Butler County Jail. 

NEW MADRID COUNTY ROAD CLOSED THIS WEEK

Route AB in New Madrid County will be closed this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway being closed is located from Route WW to County Road 405.

Work is scheduled to take place from 7 am to 3 pm, daily, through Friday.

SUSPICIOUS DEATH INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY IN DEXTER

Authorities in Stoddard County are investigating a suspicious death.

Dexter Chief of Police Hank Trout tells KWOC News that officers responded to a location on Condor Drive Monday for a medical assist call of a cardiac arrest.

The 49 year old male victim was transported to a Dexter hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The victim’s identity is being withheld until the next of kin can be notified.

Trout says that the Stoddard County Major Case Squad has been activated due to the death being suspicious.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday in Farmington. 

BUTLER COUNTY RESIDENTS COULD SEE AN INCREASE IN NATURAL GAS PRICES

Residents in Butler County could soon be seeing an increase in Natural Gas prices.

According to the Missouri Public Service Commission, Spire East customers will see natural gas rates change under a filing that takes effect today.

The Commission says that Spire East residential customers currently pay approximately $0.37 per therm of natural gas and under the filing, the rate will increase to approximately $0.59 per therm.

Spire East provides natural gas service to customers in multiple eastern Missouri counties, including Butler, Iron, and Madison. 

DEXTER MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO MURDER CHARGE

A Dexter man will be sentenced early next year following his guilty plea on a murder charge.

According to Missouri Case Net, Joshua Koonce pled guilty Monday to charges of murder 2nd degree and armed criminal action.

The charges stem from the death of Jimmy Casey in 2018.

Sentencing has been scheduled for February 1st, 2022. 

INTERSTATE 155 BRIDGE STRUCK BY A BARGE

A bridge connecting Southeast Missouri to Northwest Tennessee was closed for a period of time on Monday.

According to officials, the Interstate 155 bridge was closed after being hit by a barge.

Crews from the Tennessee Department of Transportation inspected the bridge and traffic was allowed to cross later Monday evening.  

STATE AUDITOR GIVES WAYNE COUNTY RATING OF FAIR, CITES SEVERAL CONCERNS

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway has completed an audit of Wayne County.

Galloway gave the county an overall rating of fair and says there are several concerns with county government operations.

Many of the findings identified in the report were in the County Collector's office, which handles tax collections. The audit found the Collector did not prepare and file an annual settlement for two separate years, as required by state law.

The audit also found the County Clerk does not maintain an account book or other records summarizing property tax charges, transactions and changes and does not prepare or verify the accuracy of the current or delinquent tax books.

In addition, the audit reported the offices of the Sheriff and Prosecuting Attorney need to improve accounting controls and procedures.

MULES FOOTBALL PLAYERS NAMED FINALISTS FOR THE CARR TROPHY AND DERLAND MOORE AWARD

Two Poplar Bluff Mules players have been named as finalists for prestigious awards in Southeast Missouri.

Mules Quarterback Kannon Carr is a finalist for the Carr Trophy, presented annually since 1979 to the most outstanding player in the SEMO conference.

The Carr Trophy is named in honor of E.E. “Bus” Carr who was one of the early members of the Poplar Bluff Letter Club, a sports announcer for KWOC and who was inducted into the Poplar Bluff Sports Hall of Fame and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

The other finalists are Kennett running back Jordan Jarrett and Hayti quarterback Trayvon Thomas.

Mules linebacker Hunter Jenkins is a finalist for the Derland Moore Award, which is presented to the top defensive player in the conference.

The award is named in honor of the Poplar Bluff native who was an All-American defensive lineman at Oklahoma and played for 14 seasons in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints. The other finalists are Kennett lineman Latrevion Thompson and Malden linebacker Jalias Anderson.

The winners will be announced on December 15th during the 76th Poplar Bluff Letter Club Gridiron Banquet at the Black River Coliseum.

ONE DEAD, THREE INJURED, FOLLOWING BUTLER COUNTY WRECK

A Doniphan woman has died following a two vehicle crash in Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred shortly after 2 pm Friday on US Highway 67 at County Road 323, when a vehicle pulled into the path of another vehicle.

The driver of the first vehicle, identified as 59 year old Rita Overstreet, was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital where she was pronounced dead. A passenger in the vehicle received serious injuries and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

Two people in the second vehicle were also seriously injured and transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

MISSING DEER HUNTER FOUND IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A deer hunter who went missing in Southeast Missouri last week has been located.

According to the Oregon County Sheriff’s Office, a 62 year old hunter from St. Louis left his hunting camp along an Oregon County road last Tuesday morning and became lost and disoriented.

After the hunter failed to return to his camp, his cousin contacted the Sheriff's Office at about 6 pm Tuesday evening.

A search was conducted by the Sheriff’s Office, the Missouri Department of Conservation, local landowners, and volunteers through the night and into the early morning hours on Wednesday. 

A Baxter County Sheriff’s Office helicopter responded Wednesday morning and located the injured man.  He was transported from the ravine where he was located to an area medical facility.

No information was released on the extent of his injuries. 

OVER 180,000 DEER HARVESTED DURING FIREARM DEER SEASON

Almost 188,000 deer were harvested during the November portion of firearms deer season.

Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation shows that deer hunters in Missouri harvested 187,967 deer during the season, which ran from November 13th through the 23rd.

The total was up over 10,000 deer from last year’s number.

Of the deer harvested, 101,501 were antlered bucks, 16,435 were button bucks, and 70,031 were does.

Conservation officials say that the top harvest counties were Franklin, Texas, and Howell.

Three other Southeast Missouri counties were in the top 20, with Bollinger County coming in 10th, Oregon County in 12th, and Shannon County in 18th.

DEXTER WOMAN ARRESTED ON FELONY DRUG CHARGE

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested an area woman on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 28 year old Brittany Smith, of Dexter, was taken into custody Friday night on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Smith also had a warrant out of Stoddard County for property damage.

Following the arrest, she was held at the Stoddard County Jail. 

FOUR SMALL EARTHQUAKES RECORDED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI OVER HOLIDAY WEEK

The United States Geological Survey is reporting that four small earthquakes were recorded in Southeast Missouri over the Thanksgiving holiday week.

The first was a 1.8 magnitude earthquake recorded at 11:10 pm Tuesday night. It was located five miles north of New Madrid.

Two earthquakes occurred on Thanksgiving Day, a magnitude 2.1 which was located three miles southwest of Caruthersville and a magnitude 2.0 which was located three and a half miles southeast of Marston.

On Friday morning, officials reported a magnitude 2.1 earthquake just over four miles south of Williamsville. 

DUNKLIN COUNTY ROAD TO CLOSE TODAY FOR FIVE MONTH BRIDGE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

Route DD in Dunklin County will be closed beginning today for bridge construction over the St. Francis River.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the closure will be located around three miles west of Missouri Route 53 near Campbell.

Weather permitting, work will begin today, with completion anticipated by April 1st, 2022. A signed detour will be in place during construction.

AREA MAN IN CUSTODY ON MULTIPLE COUNTS OF CHILD MOLESTATION

An area man is in custody following his arrest on multiple counts of child molestation.

According to Missouri Case Net, a warrant was served over the weekend for Alvin Burns, of Fisk, on three counts of 2nd degree child molestation.

According to a probable cause statement, Burns is accused of inappropriately touching multiple children.

Burns was arraigned earlier this week where he entered a plea of not guilty. 

MOTORISTS ENCOURAGED TO DRIVE SAFELY OVER THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Many Missouri residents are getting ready to get on the road to see their family over the Thanksgiving holiday, but officials are urging motorists to keep safety in mind.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, 12 people were killed and another 41 were seriously injured during the 2020 Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

MoDOT is urging motorists to be vigilant, always buckle up, obey posted speed limits and never drive impaired or distracted.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Emergency Report line 1-800-525-5555, or (star)55 on a cellular phone. Motorists should use the emergency line if they witness criminal activity or experience an emergency. 

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS AUTO TOUR TO OPEN THIS FRIDAY

The official opening of the 29th Annual Festival of Lights Auto Tour is set for Friday.

The Wappapello Lake Area Association and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be partnering for this year’s event at the Redman Creek East Campground from November 26th through December 26th.

NEELYVILLE TO HOST PUBLIC HEARING TO DISCUSS BLOCK GRANT APPLICATION

The City of Neelyville will be holding a public hearing next month to discuss an application for a community development block grant.

The hearing has been scheduled for 6 pm on Thursday, December 9th at the Neelyville City Hall.

The city’s proposed project consists of paving and street repairs on sections of Circle Drive, 2nd Street, Main Street, 1st Street, and Shackleford Street.

The project is estimated to cost approximately $465,000.

MAN FACING ASSAULT AND WEAPON CHARGES FOLLOWING OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING

A Lilbourn man is facing multiple charges in connection to an incident over the weekend.

According to a probable cause statement, 31 year old Jordan Courtois, is alleged to have refused to stop for a traffic stop in New Madrid County on Saturday, November 20th.

A pursuit continued until Courtois stopped his vehicle at his father’s residence and exited the vehicle with a 12 gauge shotgun. A deputy shot four times at Courtois, striking him in the left hand, right arm, and right calf.

During a later interview with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Courtois said that he was running because he did not want to go back to prison.

Courtois was treated at an area hospital before being housed in the Mississippi County Jail.

He is facing multiple charges including 1st degree assault on a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. 

He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, November 29th. 

BROSELEY WOMAN FLOWN TO ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

A Butler County woman was injured Sunday evening in a single vehicle wreck.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 49 year old Linda Leone, of Broseley, was driving on Highway CC near Elk when she failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the roadway, and overturned.

Leone suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

The Red Cross advises that cooks should avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling sleeves while preparing the holiday meal. You should also never leave the stove unattended – if the cook has to leave the kitchen even for a short time, they should turn off the stove.

Remember to clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease buildup and keep anything that can catch fire, including pot holders, oven mitts, and food packaging, away from the stove, oven or any other appliance in the kitchen that generates heat.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN CONVICTED OF ASSAULTING MSHP INVESTIGATOR

A Southeast Missouri man is facing the possibility of life in prison after being convicted of assaulting an officer.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 20 year old Zerak Brown, of Viburnum, was found guilty of two counts of assaulting and resisting an officer and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.

Officials say that evidence presented during the trial demonstrated that Brown physically assaulted a Missouri State Highway Patrol investigator and later pointed a rifle at three other officers attempting to arrest him.

Brown’s offenses occurred in Viburnum on October 23, 2020 and he was apprehended the next day. Related to the investigation, Zerak Brown’s father, Ira Brown, is currently charged with possession of machine guns.

Ira Brown was released on bond and then fled from supervision. His whereabouts are currently unknown and he is a fugitive from justice.

Officials say that Zerak Brown faces up to life in prison on his charges. Sentencing is set for February 16th. 

PEDESTRIAN FLOWN TO MEMPHIS HOSPITAL AFTER BEING HIT BY A VEHICLE

A pedestrian was flown from the scene of a wreck Thursday in Ripley County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that a Dodge Van struck a GMC Sierra was stopped partially in the roadway on Missouri Highway 21, four miles north of Doniphan.

The Van then continued on the roadway and struck a Toyota truck.

The initial collision caused the Sierra to strike a pedestrian, identified as 44 year old Michael Haywood, of Doniphan. Haywood was seriously injured and flown to a Memphis hospital.

The driver of the van suffered minor injuries and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital. 

JUVENILE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO ATTEMPTED ARMED ROBBERY

An investigation into a reported armed robbery attempt has resulted in the arrest of one juvenile.

Dexter Police Chief Hank Trout tells KWOC News that on Friday a woman reported that she was sitting in her vehicle at Walmart when a white truck, occupied by 3 males, pulled up beside her.

One of the males approached her, displayed a firearm, and demanded money. The suspects then left the area without taking any property from the victim.

Trout says that the suspect vehicle was located during the investigation and three suspects were identified. One juvenile has been taken into custody.

Trout says that the investigation is ongoing. 

MISSOURI OPENS CORONAVIRUS VACCINE BOOSTER TO ALL ADULTS

All adults in Missouri now are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster.

All adults now can receive a booster shot six months after their last Pfizer or Moderna dose. People can mix-and-match boosters from any company.

Missouri's health department acted within hours of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approving widespread boosters Friday.

The government is trying to get ahead of rising coronavirus cases that experts fear could snowball into a winter surge with upcoming holiday travel.

DRIVER FACING MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

A Poplar Bluff man is facing multiple felony charges following a single vehicle wreck on Saturday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 36 year old Kristopher Lee was driving on Missouri Highway 158 near Harviell when his vehicle travelled off the side of the roadway and struck a ditch.

Lee suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

According to an arrest report from the Highway Patrol, Lee is also facing felony charges of driving while intoxicated – alcohol and driving while revoked. 

ROUTE 60 IN STODDARD COUNTY TO BE REDUCED THIS WEEK

Route 60 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route WW to Route 51.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm daily, through Wednesday.

NAME RELEASED OF MAN KILLED IN OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING

Updating a story we have been following for you this week, authorities have released the name of the suspect who was involved in an officer involved shooting in Poplar Bluff.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that they are investigating an officer involved shooting at the request of the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

The incident occurred early Wednesday morning when officers were confronted by a person with a weapon in a reported threatening manner.

Parrott says that the suspect has been identified as 55 year old Bennie D Foster Jr., of Poplar Bluff.

Four officers have been placed on administrative leave as the incident remains under investigation. We will bring you any updates as they become available. 

MAN WANTED OUT OF POPLAR BLUFF FOR KIDNAPPING AND HIJACKING A VEHICLE

Authorities in Poplar Bluff are searching for a man who has a felony warrant for a vehicle hijacking.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, 31 year old Bryce Davis is wanted on a felony warrant for multiple charges, including vehicle hijacking, 2nd degree domestic assault, 2nd degree kidnapping, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Davis is described as a black male, five feet eight inches tall, weighing 137 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. 

Officials say that he is considered armed and dangerous.

AFTERSHOCK RECORDED SHORTLY AFTER 4.0 EARTHQUAKE WEDNESDAY NIGHT 

A smaller aftershock was recorded Wednesday night after the magnitude 4.0 earthquake.

According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 2.5 earthquake occurred at 9:40 pm Wednesday.

The earthquake was centered in Northwestern Poplar Bluff, a short distance southwest of the previous earthquake.  

DUNKLIN COUNTY MAN TO SERVE A DECADE IN PRISON ON CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGE

A Southeast Missouri man has been ordered to serve a decade in prison on a child pornography charge.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, in July of 2020 law enforcement officials obtained a search warrant for the residence of 66 year old Richard Smart, of Clarkton.

The warrant came after an investigation revealed he was using his e-mail account to upload files containing child pornography.

Smart has pled guilty to a charge of possession of child pornography and on Thursday was sentenced to serve 10 years in federal prison.

After serving the sentence, Smart will be placed on supervised release for the rest of his life.

POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS COLLECTING BOTTLE CAPS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CONVENTION TRIP

Students in Poplar Bluff are asking for your bottle caps to help raise funds to attend a state convention.

Poplar Bluff High School is collecting Pigskin Points bottle caps on Dr. Pepper products through Tuesday, December 14th.

The Beta Club is sponsoring the contest and uses the funds gained to help finance a trip to compete at the State Convention.

School officials say that the Beta Club won $2,500 in 2019 and this year there is a chance to win up to $10,000.

Teal caps with football helmets imprinted on them are being accepted in the 50-gallon barrels at the Oak Grove Road campus. 

AREA POLICE DEPARTMENT WARNING RESIDENTS OF SCAM PHONE CALLS

An area police department is warning residents to be on the watch for scam phone calls.

According to the Dexter Police Department, scammers are calling people and telling them that there is a warrant out for their arrest.

Police officials say that they will not be contacting you via phone, attempting to get any money from you, or advising you of your warrant status.

MAGNITUDE 4.0 EARTHQUAKE SHAKES SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A strong earthquake shook most of Southeast Missouri Wednesday night.

According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake was recorded at 8:53 pm.

The earthquake was centered just over four miles southeast of Williamsville and had a depth of over nine and a half miles.

Multiple people have reported the earthquake knocking items off of shelves. 

MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY PATROL INVESTIGATING OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING IN POPLAR BLUFF

An officer involved shooting that resulted in one death in Poplar Bluff is under investigation.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News they are investigating an officer involved shooting at the request of the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

The incident occurred early Wednesday morning when officers were confronted by a person with a weapon in a reported threatening manner. 

Four officers have been placed on administrative leave.

No other details have been released at this time.

MAN ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY FOR POSSESSION OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested an area man on a child pornography charge.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 29 year old, Craig Stott, of Benton, was recently taken into custody on a charge of possession of child pornography.

Officials say that Stott’s bond was set at $7,500.

ONE FACING METH CHARGE OUT OF SHANNON COUNTY

A Winona woman is facing drug and firearm charges following her arrest Tuesday night.

According to the Highway Patrol, 30 year old Cortney Meyer was taken into custody shortly before 7 pm Tuesday on felony charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, she was transported to the Shannon County Jail. 

PUXICO POLICE COLLECTING LETTERS TO SANTA

Christmas season is coming up and an area Police Department is wanting to make sure that children hear from Santa.

Children can write a letter to Santa and drop it off at his mailbox located outside the Puxico Police Department through December 15th.

Officers will make sure that Santa gets the kid’s letters and that he sends the children a personal letter back.

If your child would like to get a letter from Santa, be sure that their letter includes their first and last name as well as a return address. 

ROADWORK ON US 67 TO BEGIN AFTER THANKSGIVING IN WAYNE COUNTY

Route 67 in Wayne County will be reduced to one lane in multiple locations starting after Thanksgiving as contractor crews perform pavement repairs.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route 67 will be reduced from County Road 403 to Route FF near Greenville and from County Road 216 to Route K near Coldwater.

Weather permitting, work will take place in both locations from Monday, November 29th through Monday, December 13th from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.

NORTHEAST ARKANSAS WRECK LEAVES ONE DEAD, TWO INJURED

A wreck earlier this week in Northeast Arkansas has resulted in one death.

According to the Arkansas State Police, a vehicle driven by 19 year old Eli Campbell, of Jonesboro, failed to stop at a stop sign on a rural County Road and struck another vehicle early Monday morning.

The driver of the second vehicle, 26 year old Savanah Fenley, of Walnut Ridge, was killed in the wreck.

Campbell and a passenger in Fenley’s vehicle were both injured and transported to area hospitals. 

DUDLEY MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE FIREARM COUNTS

Authorities in Stoddard County say an area man has been taken into custody on multiple firearm counts.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 66 year old William Campbell, of Dudley, was recently booked on six counts of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.

Campbell’s bond has been set at $20,000, cash only.

POPLAR BLUFF STUDENT HONORED AT GOVERNOR’S MANSION

A Poplar Bluff student was recently honored in Jefferson City.

Mark Twain School sophomore, Jude Stewart, was a guest of honor at the Governor’s Mansion on November 9th, along with approximately 65 students from across Missouri.

Stewart was selected to attend a reception for his winning entry in the fourth annual First Lady’s Essay contest through the Jobs for America’s Graduates Missouri program.

Stewart’s essay entitled “Missouri Is Great!” touched variously on historical figures, landmarks, attractions, and other entertainment such as the World’s Fair. He also talked about the Show-Me State mentality, and how Missourians tend to come together during crises.

For representing the district, Jude received a commemorative coin containing an official state seal and had a chance to tour the Capitol.

MODOT TO HELP GRANT CHRISTMAS WISHES TO AREA FAMILIES

The Missouri Department of Transportation will be participating in the Christmas Angels program again this year to help grant Christmas wishes to Southeast Missouri families.

This year's event will be held on Thursday, December 2nd, with chili orders due by 4 pm on Monday, November 29th. The cost is $5.50 and will include a 16-ounce cup of chili, crackers and chips.

Current MoDOT employees and retirees volunteer to cook, pack, and deliver chili for the event. To place an order, call (573) 472-5294. Orders of five or more in the Sikeston area can be delivered. 

With the funds raised, volunteers purchase gifts for children who would not otherwise receive them. 

HIGHWAY PATROL HEADQUARTERS IN POPLAR BLUFF TO BE LIT UP IN BLUE TO PAY TRIBUTE TO FALLEN OFFICERS

The Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop E headquarters in Poplar Bluff will be lit up in blue through the month of December to pay tribute to fallen officers and show support for law enforcement.

The Highway Patrol will be participating in Project Blue Light, which will see the general headquarters, division offices, and troop headquarters buildings display blue lights from November 29th through January 3rd.

Officials say that 31 members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol have given their lives in fulfillment of the Patrol’s mission of providing service and protection to Missouri’s citizens.

HUNTERS ENCOURAGED TO SHARE THEIR HARVEST WITH FAMILIES IN NEED

Hunters across the state of Missouri are being asked to share their harvest to help feed families in need.

The Missouri Department of Conservation Share the Harvest program provides food to the hungry through deer meat donated by hunters. 

Hunters can choose to give part or all of any deer they harvest. They simply bring their deer to an approved meat processor to process the venison, usually into ground meat, where it is then packaged for distribution.

Share the Harvest is a statewide partnership between MDC, the Conservation Federation of Missouri, cooperating meat processors, and hunters.

DEFENDANTS TO STAND TRIAL FOR MURDER IN SEPARATE CASES

Defendants will stand trial on murder charges in separate cases in Southeast Missouri.

According to Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Russell Oliver, the 1st case is for the November 5th, 2021 homicide of Frank Morris, near Dexter.

Boyd Lippoldt has been ordered to stand trial on charges of murder in the first degree, armed criminal action, driving while intoxicated resulting in the death of another, possession of a controlled substance, and tampering with physical evidence.

Lippoldt is scheduled to appear in court on November 22nd.

In the 2nd case, Oliver is acting as a Special Prosecuting Attorney in the Pemiscot County case against Elizabeth Bridges.

Bridges has been charged with murder in the first degree, felony murder, armed criminal action, two counts of felony tampering with physical evidence, and leaving the scene of an accident.

The charges stem from Bridges alleged participation in the July 2021 murder of Randy Thomas in Hayti.

Bridges is scheduled to appear in a Pemiscot County court room on December 21st. 

ALMOST 90 THOUSAND DEER HARVESTED DURING OPENING WEEKEND OF FIREARM DEER SEASON

Hunters across Missouri took to the woods over the weekend for the opening of the November potion of firearms deer season.

According to preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation, hunters harvested 89,861 deer during the opening weekend. Of the deer harvested, 54,415 were antlered bucks, 7,187 were button bucks, and 28,259 were does.

This was an increase of over 9,000 deer from last year’s opening weekend.

Howell and Bollinger were the top counties in Southeast Missouri coming in at 5th and 6th statewide. 

WAPPAPELLO WOMAN FACING FIVE YEARS IN PRISON ON METH CHARGE

A Wappapello woman is facing five years in prison after pleading guilty on a meth related charge.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 43 year old Natalie Collins pleaded guilty in June to possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

Collins was arrested in March of 2020 while in possession of almost five ounces of methamphetamine that she was planning on delivering to another person.

Collins was sentenced Monday to 60 months in federal prison. She will also serve a four year term of supervised release following her incarceration.

WOMAN SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS IN PRISON FOR METHAMPHETAMINE

A Southeast Missouri woman has been sentenced after being found with over 100 grams of methamphetamine during a traffic stop.

Officials with the United States Attorney’s Office tell KWOC News that 42 year old Renee Taylor, of Williamsville, was sentenced to 60 months in prison on Monday.

In December of 2019, Taylor was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped in Butler County. During a search, officers located and seized several baggies from Taylor which collectively contained approximately 112 grams of a substance containing methamphetamine.

Taylor pled guilty in June to a charge of possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine. 

WEATHER OFFICIALS TO TAKE QUESTIONS FROM THE PUBLIC FOR WINTER WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK

This week is Winter Weather Awareness week in Missouri and area weather officials want to hear your questions.

The National Weather Service in Paducah will be hosting a Facebook Live session tonight at 7 pm featuring a panel of weather officials.

CITY OF DEXTER TO HOST PUBLIC HEARING ON ALLOWING UTV’S TO BE DRIVEN IN THE CITY

Residents of the city of Dexter are being asked to give their opinions on UTV’s in the city.

According to Dexter City Clerk Crystal Bishop, the Dexter Board of Aldermen will hold a public hearing at 7 pm on Monday, December 6 at the Municipal Building.

The hearing is regarding whether UTV’s should be allowed to be driven on city streets.

ONE DEAD, TWO INJURED, FOLLOWING COLLISION IN BLOOMFIELD

A crash Friday afternoon in Bloomfield has resulted in one death.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred at around 4:45 pm on Highway 25 at Griffin Road when a truck, driven by 36 year old Christopher Tormino, of Campbell, was crossing the road and was struck by a car.

A passenger in the car, identified as 44 year old Roy Bell, of Bloomfield, was transported to a Dexter hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the car, as well as a juvenile passenger were transported to regional hospitals.

No injuries were listed for the driver of the 1st vehicle. 

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI DRIVER DIES AFTER STRIKING STOPPED FREIGHTLINER

One person has died following a crash Friday evening near Kewanee.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 22 year old Richard Stinson, of Catron, was driving on Route W in New Madrid County when his vehicle struck a Freightliner that was stopped in the roadway.

Stinson was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The driver of the freightliner suffered minor injuries and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital. 

POPLAR BLUFF LIBRARY SET TO REOPEN TODAY

The main branch of the Poplar Bluff Public Library is set to reopen today.

Library officials had previously announced that the main library branch on North Main Street would be closed until today to protect the Library’s patrons and staff.

The Library’s official account posted on Facebook that some staff had been exposed to a COVID-19 positive individual and were following CDC guidelines. 

ONE IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO NORTHEAST ARKANSAS SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

An investigation is ongoing following a shooting in Northeast Arkansas.

According to authorities, a male subject was found on Friday afternoon in Walnut Ridge with multiple gunshot wounds.

The subject, whose name was not released, was flown to an area hospital for treatment. His current condition was not available.

One person has been taken into custody in connection to the investigation.

The identity of the suspect and any possible charges were not released. 

REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK ON US ROUTE 60 IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route 60 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway to be affected is located from Route 51 to Route 25.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm daily, through Friday. 

CREWS TO BE CLOSING SOUTHEAST MISSOURI ROAD THIS WEEK

Route AB in New Madrid County will be closed for most of this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

According to officials, the closure will be located from Route WW to County Road 405.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 am to 3 pm daily, through Friday.

DEER SEASON BEGINS ON SATURDAY

Hunters from across Missouri will be heading to the woods this weekend for the beginning of deer season.

Officials with the Missouri Department of Conservation say that the November portion of the firearms deer season runs from November 13th through the 23rd and the opening weekend is the most popular two days for most deer hunters in Missouri.

The MDC says that this season’s harvest should be higher than average due to increasing deer numbers across most of the state coupled with increased firearms antlerless permit availability in a number of counties and an extension of the antlerless portion.

VEHICLE STRIKES HOUSE NEAR CENTERVILLE, ONE DEAD

One person has died after a vehicle struck a house Wednesday in Reynolds County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 83 year old William Buckner, of Ellington, was driving on Highway 21 when his vehicle ran off the right side of the road, struck a house, and then a tree.

Buckner was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported. 

NEELYVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT HOSTING VETERANS DAY EVENT THIS MORNING

The Neelyville R-IV School District will be holding its annual Veterans Day Program this morning.

The event will begin at 9 am in the Neelyville High School Gym.

All veterans and the public are invited to attend.

PUBLIC HEARING TO BE HELD NEXT WEEK IN BUTLER COUNTY CONCERNING BLOCK GRANT SUBMISSION

A public hearing has been scheduled for next week in Butler County to discuss the application for a block grant.

The County will host the hearing at 9:30 am on Wednesday, November 17th at the Butler County Courthouse.

The county is proposing to repair the existing road bed, address settlement issues, overlay and pave all or sections of multiple streets in Harviell.

The county is proposing to apply for approximately $193,991 in CDBG Funding, with the total project estimated to cost just over $245,000.

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL CHOSEN TO BE A PART OF READERS PROGRAM

A Poplar Bluff elementary school was one of two schools in the state chosen to be part of a program to promote reading.

Lake Road Elementary was chosen to be part of the United States of Readers program, a partnership between Scholastic Book Clubs and bestselling author James Patterson through which students receive 10 popular children’s books of their choosing throughout the academic year.

Officials say the program is designed to promote literacy among Title 1 schools across the country.

Lake Road students recently received the first round of free books for their home libraries as part of the program.

HAYTI FIRE DEPARTMENT RIB DINNER SCHEDULED FOR EARLY DECEMBER

 A Southeast Missouri Fire Department has announced the date for their annual rib dinner.

The 42nd annual Hayti Fire Department Rib Dinner will be from 5 to 7 pm on December 4th. Officials say that the event will be set up as a drive through line to not put anyone at risk.

Tickets are $40 for two plates. There will also be a cash giveaway and raffles for multiple items.

MAN SOUGHT IN CONNECTION TO NEW MADRID SHOOTING DEATH

Authorities in New Madrid are searching for a man in connection to a shooting death.

According to New Madrid Chief of Police Joey Higgerson, at around 7 pm on November 9th, officers responded to the 100 block of St. Theresa Lane for a subject with a gunshot wound.

At the scene, officers found 18 year-old Patrick Johnson, of New Madrid, sitting in a vehicle with a gunshot wound to his hip. He was taken to a Sikeston hospital where he later died.

An investigation into the incident led to charges being filed against Terrance Bevly, of New Madrid, for involuntary manslaughter, armed criminal action, and receiving stolen property.

VETERANS DAY PROGRAM TO BE HELD IN FRONT OF BLACK RIVER COLISEUM

Multiple speakers will be celebrating Veterans today outside of the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff.

The Poplar Bluff Veterans’ Council will be hosting their 2021 Veterans Day Program at 11 am at the Veterans Wall in front of the Coliseum.

The Keynote speaker for the event will be Retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Robert Wake Senior of the Wake Foundation.

In the case of inclement weather, the program will be moved to the VA Post directly across the BRC parking lot, next to the Farmer’s Market. 

POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL VETERANS DAY PARADE TO BEGIN AT 9 AM

A parade has been scheduled for today in Poplar Bluff to honor area veterans.

According to school officials, the Poplar Bluff Middle School Veterans Day Parade will begin this morning at 9 am.

Officials say that while the parade will be for veterans only, anyone who wants to watch the parade can do so on the Poplar Bluff Middle School Facebook page. 

PEDESTRIAN INJURED IN WRECK NEAR MOREHOUSE

A pedestrian was injured in a wreck early Wednesday morning near Morehouse.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a truck struck a traffic barricade on westbound US Highway 60, which caused the barricade to be pushed into a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, 41 year old David Tropf, of Advance, suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital. No injuries were listed for the driver of the truck. 

DAY USE FEES SUSPENDED AT CERTAIN BOAT RAMPS ON WAPPAPELLO LAKE

Certain boat ramps at Wappapello Lake will not require day use fees through next Spring.

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake, day use fees will not be charged to use boat ramps at Chaonia Landing North and South, Rockwood Point, Redman Creek, Sundowner, and Peoples Creek through March 31st, 2022.

MOTORISTS REMINDED TO WATCH FOR DEER

With this weekend marking the start of deer season, motorists are being asked to be extra careful on the roadways.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, there are a larger number of crashes in Missouri involving deer and other wildlife from mid-October through the end of November.

A report from State Farm Insurance ranks Missouri 15th in the country for potential deer collisions.

Drivers should never swerve to avoid animals in the road as it can cause loss of control of their vehicles, resulting in serious injury or death.

To avoid hitting a deer, always be cautious and keep your eyes scanning both sides of the roadway.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN SENTENCED ON ASSAULT AND FIREARM CHARGES

A Poplar Bluff man is facing over three decades in prison following his conviction on assault and firearm charges.

Butler County Prosecuting Attorney Kacey Proctor tells KWOC News that Kayln Johnson was convicted by a Butler County jury in August on charges of assault in the first degree, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The charges stem from a shooting at a Poplar Bluff residence in January of 2020.

On Tuesday, Johnson was sentenced to 25 years on the assault charge, 10 years on the armed criminal action charge, and 10 years on the firearm charge, which is to be served concurrent to the two other sentences. Proctor says the overall sentence is for 35 years and Johnson must serve 85 percent of the sentence.

AREA MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED AFTER MOTORCYCLE STRIKES DEER

An area man was injured Tuesday evening after his motorcycle struck a deer.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at around 5:40 pm on Highway T, five miles south of Wappapello.

The driver of the motorcycle, 54 year old Charles Loflin, of Wappapello, was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital with serious injuries. 

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOLS ANNUAL COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING DINNER SCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY

Poplar Bluff Schools and Chartwells will be holding their annual Community Thanksgiving meal this week.

According to officials, the meal will be free for families from 6 to 8 pm on Friday.

The event will be held at the Poplar Bluff High School. 

HUNTERS REMINDED TO BE AWARE OF BAITING REGULATIONS

Deer season is rapidly approaching and the Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding hunters of baiting regulations.

According to the MDC, the use of bait, including grain or other feed placed or scattered to attract deer or turkey while hunting is illegal.

Officials say the regulations are in place to help limit the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease in deer and to ensure fair chase.

POPLAR BLUFF PARKS AND RECREATION HOSTING TURKEY TROT

Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation has announced a fun walking event for this month.

The one mile Turkey Trot will be held at McLane Park beginning at 2 pm on November 20th. Officials say the Turkey Trot is a fun walk in the park with raffles, prizes, and food.

WATER MAIN BREAKS IN NEW MADRID COUNTY CITY

Residents of a Southeast Missouri city are being advised to boil their water.

According to city officials, the city of Gideon is under a precautionary boil water order due to a break of the city’s main water line.

The order is for the area from Madison Street and South Main Street to South Anderson Avenue and South Main Street.

THREE POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOLS RANKED IN THE TOP 15 OF MISSOURI

Three schools in the Poplar Bluff School District have been ranked in the top 15 elementary schools in Missouri.

According to school officials, each of Poplar Bluff’s lower elementary buildings have been named ‘Best Elementary Schools’ according to the inaugural rankings of the U.S. News & World Report.

Eugene Field was listed at Number 8 in the state, followed by Oak Grove at 9 and Lake Road Elementary at 14. The rankings included over 1,000 schools statewide.

Superintendent Scott Dill says that the rankings speak volumes to the work that is being done throughout the district. 

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS AUTO TOUR TO BEGIN ON NOVEMBER 26TH

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI FOOD BANK TO HOST MULTIPLE MOBILE FOOD PANTRIES THIS WEEK

The Southeast Missouri Food Bank will be hosting multiple mobile food pantries this week across the area.

Officials with the food bank say that people needing food assistance should visit a mobile food pantry in the community or county they live. Attendees are also asked to bring a photo ID and a piece of mail that establishes proof of residence, such as a utility bill.

The mobile food pantries will be held today in Wappapello and Sikeston, on Wednesday in Braggadocio, on Thursday in Campbell, on Friday in Van Buren and Kennett, and on Saturday in Poplar Bluff, Lesterville, and Bloomfield.

Distributions will be limited to one box per household.

DEER HUNTERS REMINDED OF MANDATORY CWD SAMPLING

With firearm deer season coming up, the Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding deer hunters that it will be holding mandatory chronic wasting disease sampling during the opening weekend.

Hunters who harvest deer in any counties in the CWD Management Zone on November 13th and 14th are required to take their harvested deer or the head on the day of harvest to one of MDC’s numerous CWD mandatory sampling stations located throughout the zone.

Hunters must present their deer to a CWD mandatory sampling station within the county of harvest, with a few exceptions. Sampling and test results are free.

US ROUTE 60 TO BE REDUCED IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route 60 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane early this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route 51 to Route 25.

Work will take place from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm both today and tomorrow.

REPAIRS TO CAUSE CLOSURE OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI ROAD

Route A in Pemiscot County will be closed this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

According to authorities, the work zone is located from Highway B to County Road 221.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 am to 3 pm through Thursday.

DEXTER MAN FACING MURDER CHARGE AFTER ALLEGEDLY HITTING SOMEONE WITH HIS VEHICLE

A Dexter man is facing a murder charge following an incident on Friday.

According to Stoddard County Chief Deputy Sheriff Andy Holden, shortly before 5 pm on Friday, deputies were dispatched to a truck repair business near the intersection of US Highway 60 and County Road 517.

They found 32 year old Franklin J. Morris dead at the scene.

The Stoddard County Major Case Squad was activated and an investigation led to the arrest of 41 year old Boyd Lippoldt, of Dexter.

Lippoldt is alleged to have intentionally struck Morris with a vehicle and then moving the vehicle in an attempt to conceal evidence.

Lippoldt is facing charges of 1st degree murder, armed criminal action, possession of methamphetamine, and driving while intoxicated causing a death.

Holden says that the investigation into the incident is ongoing. 

MULTIPLE LOCAL OFFICIALS APPEAR ON 60 MINUTES

Multiple local officials appeared on last night’s episode of the CBS news program 60 Minutes.

Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whiteley and Butler County Prosecuting Attorney Kacey Proctor both were interviewed for a segment on the Missouri Second Amendment Preservation Act, which was signed by Governor Mike Parson in June.

The act prohibits state and local cooperation with federal officials that attempt to enforce any laws, rules, orders, or actions that violate the Second Amendment rights of Missourians.

The interviews were a part of a story on conservative police and prosecutors in the state who were not in favor of the law.

POPLAR BLUFF LIBRARY TO BE CLOSED FOR A WEEK

The Poplar Bluff Library has been temporarily closed.

According to a post on the library’s website, the main library branch on North Main Street will be closed until Monday, November 15th, unless otherwise announced.

All scheduled programming at the main branch has also been cancelled.

No reason was given for the closure other than to protect the Library’s patrons and staff.

The Ridgel Branch on Kanell Boulevard will remain open for their normal hours, from 1 to 6 pm, Tuesday through Saturday. 

POPLAR BLUFF BOYS SWIMMING TEAM QUALIFIES FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEET

The Poplar Bluff Mules boys swimming team is going to the state championship this week.

The team qualified for the MSHSAA State Swimming Championship in the 200 yard medley relay, the 200 yard freestyle relay, and the 400 yard freestyle relay.

Preliminaries for the state championship will be held Thursday in St. Peters, with the finals to follow on Friday. 

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE TO CAUSE DELAYS ON ROUTE 67 IN WAYNE COUNTY

Southbound U.S. Route 67 in Wayne County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction beginning this morning as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance. 

The bridge is located over Bennet Creek just south of County Road 216 near Lodi.

Work was scheduled to begin at 7 am this morning and will continue through at 4:30 pm tomorrow. Officials say the work zone will be set-up throughout the night.

INTERSTATE RAMPS TO BE CLOSED TODAY AT SIKESTON CLOVERLEAF

Contractor crews will be repairing the pavement at the Interstate 55/57 and U.S. Route 60 cloverleaf interchange in Sikeston today.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Ramp 1A from southbound I-57 to southbound I-55 will be closed from 7 am to 1 pm.

Officials say that Ramp 66B from northbound I-55 to westbound U.S. Route 60 will be closed from 1 pm to 6 pm.

A signed detour will be in place.

 FOOTBALL DISTRICT PLAYOFFS TO CONTINUE TONIGHT

The Poplar Bluff Mules will continue their football district playoff campaign tonight.

The three seed Mules are going on the road to take on the two seed Seckman in the Class 5, District 1 Semifinals.

Should the Mules win, they will either host five seed Mehlville or travel to one seed Jackson for the District Final.

AREA POLICE OFFICER FACING SEXUAL ABUSE CHARGE

A Southeast Missouri police officer is facing multiple charges.

65 year old Woodrow Massa, of Patterson, has been charged with felony sexual abuse in the first degree and harassment.

Massa, who is a Piedmont city police officer, is accused of inappropriately touching the victim as well as causing emotional distress.

An arraignment was held on Wednesday and Massa’s next court appearance has been scheduled for Monday, December 6th. 

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME ENDS THIS WEEKEND

The sun will begin rising an hour earlier on Sunday.

Daylight Saving Time will come to an end at 2 am Sunday morning. Remember to set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night. 

This is also a good time to check or change the batteries in your smoke detector.

Daylight Saving Time will start again on Sunday, March 13th, 2022.  

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN ARRESTED ON TRAFFICKING CHARGE

A Southeast Missouri man was taken into custody this week on a trafficking charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 25 year old Michael Amerson, of Steele, was arrested Wednesday afternoon on a felony charge of trafficking methamphetamine.

Amerson is also facing charges of driving while suspended, exceeding the posted speed limit, and following too closely.

Following the arrest, he was held at the Dunklin County Jail. 

AGREEMENT SIGNED BY TWO STATE AGENCIES TO PROVIDE GUIDANCE FOR EMERGENCY RESPONDERS

The Missouri Department of Transportation and the Missouri State Highway Patrol have signed the Missouri Open Roads Agreement, which officials are calling a first-of-its-kind document that provides guidance to emergency responders clearing incidents from Missouri highways.

In the agreement, the agencies adopted a goal to clear traffic incidents safely from the roadway in no more than 90 minutes from the arrival of the first responder.

MoDOT, the Highway Patrol and other emergency responders are calling on drivers to do their part by staying alert, slowing down and, when possible, moving over to give them room to work at crash scenes.

The agreement comes right before the beginning of Crash Responder Safety Week on November 8th.

Route MM in Stoddard County will be closed today as contractor crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of Route MM to be closed is located from Route U to County Road 684.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 8 am to 3:30 pm.

RIBBON CUTTING HELD AT THE LOCATION OF EXPANDED TECHNOLOGY CENTER ON TRC CAMPUS

Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff is celebrating the expansion of the Crisp Technology Center.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Wednesday for the Harry L. Crisp Sr. Technology Center. Former Missouri Speaker of the House, Todd Richardson, spoke at the event as did multiple TRC representatives.

The Crisp Technology Center focuses on providing career education and workforce development courses that prepare students for careers in the region.

The education provided ranges from short term courses that last a few weeks to full two-year programs.

MISSOURI CHILDREN BETWEEN 5 AND 11 YEARS OLD NOW ELIGIBLE FOR COVID-19 VACCINE

Children ages 5 to 11 now are eligible for COVID-19 vaccines in Missouri.

The Missouri state health department on Wednesday announced it's adopting the same recommendations for pediatric vaccination as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Federal health authorities gave the final go-ahead Tuesday for a vaccine made by Pfizer for younger children.

Missouri health department spokeswoman Lisa Cox says the state has 116,100 initial doses of the pediatric coronavirus vaccine. That’s enough for roughly 22% of the state’s more than 533,000 newly eligible children.

MAN FACING METH CHARGE OUT OF CARTER COUNTY

Authorities in Carter County have arrested a Missouri man on a meth charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 30 year old Gregory Bennett, of Carl Junction, was arrested late Tuesday night on a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine.

Bennett is also facing charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding.

Following the arrest, he was transported to the Carter County Jail. 

DATE APPROACHING FOR 11TH ANNUAL CASINO NIGHT AND MOUSE RACES

The date is approaching for the Poplar Bluff Rotary Club’s 11th Annual Casino Night and Mouse Races.

The event will be held from 6:30 to 10 pm on Saturday, November 6th at the Poplar Bluff Holiday Inn Ballroom.

MODOT ANNOUNCES PLANS TO IMPROVE STODDARD COUNTY BRIDGE

A Stoddard County road will be closed for part of next year due to bridge improvements.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced plans to replace the deck of the Route WW bridge over Drainage Ditch #26, north of Dudley.

Officials say that construction could begin as early as next spring, with completion anticipated by fall 2022.

As work is underway, the roadway will be closed in the vicinity of the bridge for approximately three months.

DUNKLIN COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY

Route MM in Dunklin County will be closed today as contractor crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the work zone will be located from County Road 114 to County Road 110.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 am to 3:30 pm.
