FOOTBALL DISTRICT PLAYOFFS TO BEGIN THIS FRIDAY

The Poplar Bluff Mules will begin their football district playoff campaign tonight.

The Mules earned a three seed in the Class 5, District 1 playoffs and will take on the six seed Oakville Tigers in a Quarterfinal matchup at 7 pm.

Should the Mules win, they will either host seven seed Cape Central or travel to two seed Seckman for the District Semifinal.

The East Carter Lady Redbirds softball team will be playing this morning in the Class 1 State Softball Semi-final. The Lady Redbirds will take on the Maysville Lady Wolverines with first pitch scheduled for 11 am. 

TWO SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WRECK NEAR POPLAR BLUFF

Two people were injured Wednesday night in a wreck near Poplar Bluff.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 39 year old Richard Robertson, of Broseley, was driving a car on Highway AA at approximately 9:30 pm, when his vehicle travelled off the side of the roadway and overturned.

Robertson, as well as passenger 25 year old Justin Shepherd, of Poplar Bluff, suffered serious injuries in the wreck and were transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

According to an arrest report from the Highway Patrol, Robertson is facing a felony charge of driving while intoxicated. 

MISSING DUNKLIN COUNTY MAN FOUND DEAD

Updating a story we brought to you yesterday, two people have been taken into custody in connection to the investigation of a missing person in Dunklin County.

61 year old Jerry Ott has been found dead according to authorities.

Ott was reported missing by authorities on Wednesday and had last been seen on October 25th.

The names of the two people in custody and the cause of death were not released. 

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS FROM THE POPLAR BLUFF POLICE DEPARTMENT

Halloween is coming up this weekend and Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whiteley has some tips to help keep your children safe while trick or treating. 

Chief Whiteley says parents should establish a route for children, making sure they stay within familiar areas and surroundings. An adult should accompany young children. Parents should also remind kids not to enter strangers' homes or cars, and to avoid homes without an outside light on.

Be sure to tell your children to not eat treats until they get home and remember to inspect all treats before allowing your kids to eat them.

 POLICE IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI CITY TO STEP UP ENFORCEMENT IN SCHOOL ZONES

A southeast Missouri Police Department has seen a number of complaints recently about motorists speeding in school zones and they are taking steps to put a stop to it.

Kennett Chief of Police Kenny Wilson says that his officers will be taking a zero-tolerance approach while enforcing traffic laws in the school zones.

Wilson says that their number one priority will be the safety of students and the parents who are dropping kids off and picking kids up at their schools.

DUNKLIN COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED THIS WEEKEND

Route A in Dunklin County will be closed beginning this weekend as contractor crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

According to officials, the section of roadway to be closed is located from County Road 510 to County Road 531.

Weather permitting, work will begin Saturday at 7 am, with the road re-opening on Monday, November 8th at 4 p.m.

SEARCH UNDERWAY FOR MISSING MAN IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Multiple area authorities have been searching for a missing man in Dunklin County.

Dunklin County Sheriff Bob Holder tells KWOC News that 61 year old Jerry Ott was last seen on October 25th possibly driving a camouflage older Yamaha four wheeler into the wooded area near County Roads 110 and 111.

A search of the wooded area was conducted by members of the Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office, the Missouri Highway Patrol, and the Malden, Campbell, and Holcomb Fire Departments.

STATE OF EMERGENCY ISSUED BY MADISON COUNTY OFFICIALS

A state of emergency has been declared in a southeast Missouri county.

Madison County officials issued the order Wednesday, three days after an EF3 tornado touched down in the Fredericktown area.

The tornado damaged multiple homes as well as destroyed two warehouses at Black River Electric Co-op.

A preliminary survey reported that the tornado had wind speeds reaching approximately 150 miles per hour. 

 

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF POPLAR BLUFF TO ANNOUNCE BIG NEWS TODAY

An area youth organization has been promoting a big announcement for today.

The Boys and Girls Club of Poplar Bluff will be making the announcement this morning at 11:30 am at the Poplar Bluff Middle School parking lot.

CEO Chris Rushin tells KWOC News that “This is a big announcement for our incredible Club that encompasses the hard work and dedication of our Board of Directors, our professional staff and our kids.”

The Boys and Girls Club of Poplar Bluff serves over 500 kids a day in nine different locations. 

STEM KITS DONATED TO POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL

An area school has some new tools to help students learn STEM skills.

According to Poplar Bluff School Officials, Three Rivers College’s Educational Talent Search program has donated a stockpile of gently used STEM kits to the Poplar Bluff Middle School for its hands-on elective.

According to ETS Director Brandi Brooks, the kits were left-over from the end of the program’s five-year grant cycle, during which ETS officials applied for additional funds to start a STEM club to help keep Junior High students engaged, and used the products for weekly Zoom sessions through the pandemic.

 

TEMPORARY BENEFIT INCREASE ANNOUNCED FOR MISSOURI WIC PARTICIPANTS

Missourians who are participating in the WIC program will be getting some extra benefits for the holidays.

Missouri WIC is temporarily increasing the Cash Value Benefit for Fruit and Vegetable Purchases during November and December to $24 per month for children, $43 per month for pregnant and postpartum participants and $47 per month for breastfeeding participants.

Officials say the Standard CVB values range from $9 to 11.

Eligible participants need to contact their local WIC agency to schedule an appointment to load the additional funds on their eWIC card before November 1st to avoid any delays.

OVER TWO WEEK LONG REPAIR PROJECT UNDERWAY IN CARTER COUNTY

Route 60 in Carter County will be reduced to one lane for two weeks as crews perform pavement repairs.

According to Missouri Department of Transportation officials, the work zone is located from Route M to Route C.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 am to 4:30 pm daily through Thursday, November 11th.

AREA SCHOOL TO BE OUT FOR THE REST OF THIS WEEK DUE TO STORM DAMAGE

Storm damage has caused one area school to cancel classes for the rest of this week.

According to the Zalma R-5 school district, workers have completed most of the storm cleanup and are working to temporarily secure the gymnasium until repairs and renovations from the weekend storms can be completed.

Superintendent Gerard Vandeven said in a Facebook Post that they do not anticipate power being restored to the elementary before the end of the week so they will be cancelling classes for the remainder of this week.

A revised school calendar will be posted next week once final decisions are made on make-up days.

After also missing the last two days because of storm damage, the Fredericktown R-1 School District has announced that they will be in session today. 

POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL TO HOST VETERANS DAY PARADE

Area veterans are being invited to take part in a Veterans Day Parade in Poplar Bluff.

The Poplar Bluff Middle School will be holding the parade, for veterans only, starting at 9 am on Thursday, November 11th.

Veterans who would like to drive in the parade are asked to call 573-785-5566 and ask to speak with a counselor.

School officials say that guests can watch the parade on the Poplar Bluff Middle School Facebook page. 

 

TWO ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGES IN STODDARD COUNTY 

Two Indianapolis residents were taken into custody this week in southeast Missouri on drug charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the arrests both occurred shortly before 10:30 pm Monday night in Stoddard County.

29 year old Mack Proctor was taken into custody on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – ecstasy, unlawful use of a weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Authorities also arrested 30 year old Robert Reed on charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrests, both were held at the Stoddard County Jail. 

 

EARTHQUAKE RATTLES MISSOURI BOOTHEEL

Multiple residents reported feeling an earthquake Tuesday in the Missouri bootheel.

According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 2.8 earthquake was recorded almost five miles northeast of Steele at around 10:30 am Tuesday morning.

Officials say the quake had a depth of over four miles. 

 

ROAD CLOSURE SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

Route Z in Butler County will be closed today so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can replace a culvert under the roadway.

The section of Route Z to be closed is located between County Road 564 and U.S. Highway 60.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 am to 4 pm.

PRELIMINARY SURVEY INDICATES EF3 TORNADO STRUCK FREDERICKTOWN AREA SUNDAY NIGHT

Survey crews are assessing the damage from Sunday night’s severe weather in Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, a preliminary damage survey indicated that an EF3 Tornado struck the Fredericktown area.

The Red Cross was in Fredericktown on Monday to get shelters set up for anyone who needed them.

RIVER RADIO LIGHTED CHRISTMAS PARADE SET FOR DECEMBER 3RD

Parade lights will be shining bright in Downtown Poplar Bluff this December for the 2021 River Radio Lighted Christmas Parade.

Entries are now being accepted for the parade, which is scheduled for 6:30 pm on Friday, December 3rd. Entry forms are available on our Facebook page and website. The deadline for entries is November 29th.

The parade route this year will run from Highway 142 at McDonalds through downtown Poplar Bluff before looping back and ending at the Black River Coliseum.

Trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. For more information, call 785-0881.

 

ZALMA SCHOOL DISTRICT TO MISS CLASSES TODAY DUE TO STORM DAMAGE

Storm damage from this past weekend will cause at least one area school to be out for today.

According to the Zalma R-5 school district, the Sunday night storms caused considerable damage to the school’s gymnasium and knocked down power lines around the campus.

Classes at Zalma were cancelled for both yesterday and today.

Superintendent Gerard Vandeven says that they hope to be back in school by Wednesday, however they cannot make that decision until they assess all of the damage around the buildings.

The Zalma Fire Department and other community responders were at the school yesterday removing debris from school grounds and loose metal roofing that posed a danger of blowing off.

The National Weather Service in Paducah says that an EF1 Tornado that travelled from five miles north of Shook, in Wayne County, to one mile northeast of Glennon, in Bollinger County, caused the damage. 

 

ARKANSAS MAN DIES FROM INJURIES HE RECEIVED IN A WEEKEND WRECK

An Arkansas man has died from injuries he received in a wreck over the weekend.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 59 year old Brett Gibson of Beech Grove, was driving on a Greene County road Saturday evening when his vehicle ran off the side of the road and struck several fence posts and an embankment.

After hitting the embankment, the vehicle flipped end over end before coming to a rest over 50 feet away from the roadway.

ASP officials announced Monday that Gibson had died from the crash. 

BRAZILIAN MUSIC TO FILL TINNIN FINE ARTS CENTER TONIGHT

Concert goers can experience the sounds of Brazil tonight at Three Rivers College.

TRC and the Patrons of the Arts are presenting the Brazilian All Stars at 7 pm tonight at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

The concert will feature a super group of some of the most renowned Brazilian musicians performing a sample of Brazil’s most famous songs.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online at trcc.edu/tinnin. Any remaining tickets can also be purchased at the door before the show.

Route JJ in Dunklin County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

The section of Route JJ to be closed is located between Route J and County Road 103.

MULTIPLE REPORTS OF STORM DAMAGE IN NORTHERN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Strong storms crossed Southeast Missouri late Sunday night resulting in multiple damage reports in the northern section of the region.

According to storm reports from the National Weather Service, at least five homes were destroyed between Farmington and Fredericktown.

A twitter video also showed a camper destroyed on a Fredericktown area road.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI SOFTBALL TEAM REACHES STATE FINAL FOUR

A Southeast Missouri Softball team will be playing in the state Final Four this week.

The East Carter Lady Redbirds have advanced to the Class 1 state Semi-final following their 6-3 victory over Leeton on Saturday in Centerview.

The Lady Redbirds will now rest up before heading to Springfield to take on the Maysville Lady Wolverines. First pitch is scheduled for 11 am this Friday.

 

BUTLER COUNTY FAIR SET FOR THIS WEEK

The Butler County Fair returns this week.

According to organizers, the fair is officially scheduled for October 27th through the 30th.

Events will include Barrel Racing on Thursday, the Rodeo on Friday, along with the parade and demolition derby on Saturday.

POPLAR BLUFF TEACHER MAKES SHORTLIST FOR OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR PROGRAM

A local middle school teacher was chosen for the shortlist in the second annual McDonald’s Outstanding Educator Program.

According to the Poplar Bluff School District, 4th grade math teacher Aleanna Moore was reportedly one of nine regional honorees, which also included a single grand prize winner.

There were a total of 724 nominations for the program.

At the end of the month, Moore will receive a $100 Visa gift card, which she said she plans to use toward classroom headphone sets along with a ‘best teacher ever’ coffee mug.

Moore has served at the Poplar Bluff Middle School for the past five years. Before that she was employed at Oak Grove and Lake Road Elementary Schools. 

WAPPAPELLO MAN ARRESTED ON FELONY CHARGES IN BUTLER COUNTY 

Authorities in Butler County have arrested an area man on multiple felony charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 52 year old Donald Norman, of Wappapello, was taken into custody Sunday morning on felony charges of receiving stolen property and driving while revoked.

Following the arrest, Norman was held at the Butler County Jail.

 

ROADSIDE WORK TO CAUSE DELAYS THIS WEEK IN GREENVILLE

Business 67 in Wayne County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform roadside work. 

The section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route E to Walnut Street in Greenville.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday, from 8 am to 4 pm each day.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS PROJECTED TO HAVE HIGHER THAN NORMAL TEMPERATURES THIS WINTER

We could be looking at a warmer than normal winter according to the latest projections.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s winter outlook was released yesterday and shows that Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas are favored to have above normal temperatures from December through February.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS PROJECTED TO HAVE HIGHER THAN NORMAL TEMPERATURES THIS WINTER

We could be looking at a warmer than normal winter according to the latest projections.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s winter outlook was released yesterday and shows that Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas are favored to have above normal temperatures from December through February.

We could also be looking at a higher chance of above normal amounts of precipitation for this winter.

SENTENCING SET FOR DECEMBER FOR TENNESSEE MAN IN CONNECTION TO FATAL CRASH

A Tennessee man is facing sentencing in December after his conviction on two charges relating to the deaths of a Missouri family during a drunk driving incident.

Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney Nicholas Jain tells KWOC News, that 59 year old Benny Johnson, of Milan, Tennessee was convicted by a Stoddard County Jury on Wednesday for three charges of driving while intoxicated causing a death and two charges of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident.

The charges stem from the deaths of 32 year old Tiffini Santana and two children from Butler, Missouri, who were killed in July of 2017 when Johnson struck them with his truck.

Laboratory analysis revealed Johnson’s blood alcohol content to be in excess of the legal limit hours after the crash.

Jain says that the jury returned a sentencing recommendation of 10 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections on each of the three DWIs and 4 years each on the two charges of leaving the scene of an accident, as well as a fine, which is the maximum possible sentence under the law.

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for December 1st. 

 

TIP LEADS TO DRUG ARREST IN STODDARD COUNTY

A Bloomfield man was held in the Stoddard County Jail this week after he was found in possession of multiple drugs.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Office, on Tuesday, deputies received information that David Barfield, of Bloomfield, was selling methamphetamine from his residence.

Deputies made contact with Barfield and found him to be in possession of approximately six grams of methamphetamine, 16 grams of marijuana, smoking devices, scales, and a revolver.

Barfield was arrested on charges including delivery of a controlled substance and unlawful use of a weapon.

He was housed in the Stoddard County Jail on a $25,000 cash only bond. 

 

 

ZALMA FIRE DEPARTMENT TO HOST SPAGHETTI DINNER FUNDRAISER THIS WEEKEND

The Zalma Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting a fundraising dinner this weekend.

A spaghetti dinner has been scheduled for 3 to 7 pm on Saturday at the Zalma School Cafeteria. All plates will include noodles, meat sauce, garlic bread, a side salad, dessert, and a beverage.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Zalma Volunteer Fire Department. 

  

TODAY IS BUCKLE UP, PHONE DOWN DAY IN MISSOURI

Missourians are being encouraged to drive safely today for Buckle Up, Phone Down day.

Governor Mike Parson has proclaimed October 22nd as Buckle Up, Phone Down Day in Missouri in an effort to encourage Missourians to take two simple actions to save lives on the state’s highways – fasten their seat belts and put their phones down while driving.

Missouri’s 2021 Seat Belt Usage Survey showed 88 percent of vehicle occupants use a seat belt, matching the highest rate the state has ever recorded.

But the unbuckled 12 percent make up a majority of the state’s roadway fatalities, which spiked in 2020 despite a decrease in traffic volume. More than two-thirds of the drivers and passengers killed in traffic crashes last year were not wearing a seat belt.

Poplar Bluff Athletics Director Kent Keith says that anyone wishing to attend must purchase a ticket online at mshsaa.org.

TWO BEARS HARVESTED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AS A PART OF MISSOURI BLACK BEAR SEASON

Seven bears have been harvested in Missouri as a part of the state’s first black bear hunting season.

The season began on October 18th and will run through the 27th. The hunters approved for the season were drawn earlier this year from a random drawing of applicants.

According to officials, two of the bears were killed in Southeast Missouri, while the other five were in Southwest Missouri.

The MDC proposed a limited and highly regulated black-bear hunting season following several years of public comment, including informational open houses in 2019 and a public-input process in the spring and fall of 2020.

STATEWIDE WINTER WEATHER DRILL TO BE HELD TODAY

Don’t be surprised if you see an increased amount of MoDOT vehicles on the roads today.

To help get prepared for the upcoming winter weather season, the Missouri Department of Transportation will be holding its annual winter operations drill throughout today.

During the drill, motorists may notice an increased number of MoDOT vehicles on state routes. In rural areas, crews will deploy after 8 am. In urban areas, the drill will not begin until after 9 am. The exercise should be completed by 3 pm.

MoDOT employees will react to a simulated forecast of significant snow for the entire state. The department’s emergency operations centers will activate and maintenance employees will be deployed to their trucks. Emergency communications systems will also be tested.

Millions of people all across the central United States will be participating in the Great Central U.S. Shakeout Earthquake Drill this morning.

The drill is scheduled for 10:21 a.m. and officials say the goal is to get everyone prepared for a possible major earthquake.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN SENTENCED ON FIREARM CHARGE

A Southeast Missouri man will be spending multiple years in prison after pleading guilty to a firearm charge.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 30 year old Dwayne Harris, of Sikeston, has pled guilty to a charge of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

According to court documents, in November of 2020, officers with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety executed a search warrant at Harris’s residence and located a fully loaded Smith and Wesson semiautomatic pistol, as well as an additional firearm magazine, and a quantity of marijuana.

Harris has a prior felony conviction for unlawful use of a weapon and is prohibited from possessing firearms.

He was sentenced Wednesday to five years in federal prison.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE DEPARTMENT TO HOST DRUG TAKE BACK EVENT

Poplar Bluff residents will have a chance to safely dispose of their unused, unwanted, or expired prescription drugs this month.

The Poplar Bluff Police Department will be participating in National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 23rd from 10 am to 2 pm at the Poplar Bluff Police Station.

PUBLIC HEARING SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK TO DISCUSS CARTER COUNTY GRANT APPLICATION

A public hearing has been scheduled for this week in Carter County to discuss a grant application.

Carter County will hold a public hearing at 8:45 am on Friday, October 22nd, at the Carter County Courthouse in Van Buren, to discuss the county’s submission of an application for the Community Development Block Grant program for repairs to the Nutrition Center.

Officials are proposing to complete multiple repairs and replacements to the roof, ceiling, flooring, walls, cabinets, and countertops, along with completing upgrades to the equipment such as new industrial sized dishwasher for the facility. 

The total project cost is estimated at $200,000.

 

STODDARD COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE NOMINATED FOR K9 GRANT

A Southeast Missouri law enforcement agency is asking for votes to help add a K9 unit.

The Stoddard County Sheriff’s Office has been nominated for the Aftermath K9 grant to help fund the procurement of a new K9 unit.

They were nominated by the Bloomfield Department of Public Safety and the Stoddard County Coroner’s Office.

Sheriff Hefner says they are competing with departments across the country and need votes to win.

ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENT IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route 51 in Stoddard County will be closed for part of today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

According to officials the section of roadway to be closed is located about two and a half miles south of Puxico.

Work will take place today from 8 am to 3 pm.

 

BRIDGE REPAIRS SET FOR TODAY IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Route 53 in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews repair the bridge over Indian Camp Slough.

The work zone is located between County Road 332 and County Road 322 near Holcomb.

Weather permitting, work is scheduled for 7 am to 4:30 pm.

AREA MAN SENTENCED FOR HIS ROLE IN 2015 MURDER

A man is facing over 10 years in prison for his role in a 2015 murder.

According to Missouri Case Net, 30 year old Eldrid Smith, pled guilty in August to a charge of 2nd degree murder.

Smith was sentenced Monday to 12 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections on the charge.

 

ONE IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO ALLEGED STABBING IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A Steele man is in custody in connection to an alleged stabbing.

According to Steele Police Chief Billy Joe Stanfield, the victim was airlifted to an area hospital with stab wounds following an incident on North First Street in Steele.  

44 year old Curtis Agee has been arrested on charges of assault 1st, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and possession of a controlled substance.

Agee was incarcerated in the Pemiscot County Jail on no bond.

The condition and identity of the victim was not released. 

 

MALDEN WOMAN ARRESTED ON MARIJUANA CHARGE

A Malden woman is facing multiple felony charges following her arrest over the weekend.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 34 year old Tammy Cowart was taken into custody Sunday night on felony charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a controlled substance.

Cowart is also facing a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. Following the arrest, she was held at the Dunklin County Jail. 

BRIDGE TO BE REPLACED ON ROUTE FF IN WAYNE COUNTY

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced plans to replace a bridge in Wayne County.

According to officials, the bridge is located over Rings Creek on Route FF south of Patterson. The new concrete bridge will be wider than the existing structure.

Construction could begin as early as spring 2023 with completion anticipated by the following fall.

As work is underway, the roadway will be closed in the vicinity of the bridge for approximately three months. Signed detours will be in place.

 

ROADSIDE WORK SCHEDULED FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR IN WAYNE COUNTY

U.S. Route 67 in Wayne and Madison Counties will be reduced to one lane for the rest of this year as contractor crews perform roadside work. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of Route 67 to be reduced is located from Route 172 near Hendrickson to Route A near Cherokee Pass.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 am to 5 pm daily through Friday, December 31st.

TWO ARRESTED FOR MURDER IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Three people have been arrested following the discovery of human remains in Southeast Missouri.

Bollinger County Sheriff Casey Graham tells KWOC News that on October 14th, the Bollinger County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a missing person, identified as 21 year old Brianna Roberts, of Illinois.

An investigation found that Kaitlyn Morgan and Eric Nanney, of Glen Allen, were the last known individuals to have had contact with Brianna.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING CRASH NEAR POPLAR BLUFF

One person has died following a wreck Saturday afternoon in Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a car failed to yield while getting on US Highway 67, four miles south of Poplar Bluff, and was struck by a tractor trailer.

The driver of the car, 45 year old Clarence Sarabia, of Poplar Bluff, was pronounced dead at the scene by Butler County Coroner Jim Akers.

No injuries were listed for the driver of the tractor trailer.

 

TWO ARRESTED FOR MURDER IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Three people have been arrested following the discovery of human remains in Southeast Missouri.

During a search of a residence in Bollinger County, human remains were located on the property. Graham says that it was discovered that the victim was stabbed and shot multiple times. As a result of the investigation, Morgan and Nanney were placed under arrest, as was Nanney’s father Ricky Nanney.

Eric Nanney and Kaitlyn Morgan are both facing charges of 1st degree murder, tampering with physical evidence, and abandonment of a corpse. Their bond was each set at $1,000,000, cash only.

Ricky Nanney has been charged with tampering with physical evidence and his bond was set at $50,000, cash only.

An autopsy for the remains has been scheduled for this morning.

  

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK BY VEHICLE IN BUTLER COUNTY

A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle late Saturday night near Poplar Bluff.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 28 year old Tyler Phillips, of Poplar Bluff, was walking in the roadway on Missouri Highway 142 shortly before midnight Saturday night when he was hit by a truck.

Phillips suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

 

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI POLICE DEPARTMENT TO RECEIVE DONATION OF K-9 BODY ARMOR

A Police Department in Southeast Missouri has announced that they are receiving a donation of body armor for their four-legged officer. 

The Kennett Police Department’s K9 Rocky will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

Officials say that the delivery of the vest is expected within eight to ten weeks.

 

DONIPHAN FOOTBALL STADIUM AND FACILITIES TURNED OVER TO DONIPHAN R-1 SCHOOL

A special event was held before Doniphan’s football game Friday night.

During the event, the Doniphan for Football non-profit group announced that the loan for the stadium will be retired and the stadium and facilities will be turned over to the Doniphan R-1 School district.

The facilities also include a weight room, field house, press box, bleachers, scoreboard, and more.

Doniphan is currently in its fourth season of varsity football.

FIREFIGHTERS SAVE DOG FROM STRUCTURE FIRE

A pet was saved from a fire this week in the Missouri Bootheel.

According to the Kennett Police Department, firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire on Slice Street that had an animal inside.

Chief Paul Spain was able to make entry into the structure and save a small dog.

AREA MAN CONVICTED ON STATUTORY RAPE CHARGE

An area man is facing over 30 years in prison after being convicted on multiple sex charges.

Butler County Prosecuting Attorney Kacey Proctor tells KWOC News that a jury deliberated for only 30 minutes Thursday before handing down guilty verdicts for Thomas Woodham, of Poplar Bluff, on charges of 1st degree statutory rape, 1st degree statutory sodomy, and incest.

The case stems from a 2017 investigation by the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

Proctor says that Woodham’s sentencing has been scheduled for December 7th and he is facing up to 30 years on the statutory rape charge, 30 years on the statutory sodomy charge, and four years on the incest charge.

MISSOURI MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT TO BEGIN TODAY

Eligible Missourians will be able to enroll in Medicare beginning today.

According to the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance, the open enrollment period runs from today through December 7th and presents Missourians with the opportunity to change their Part D drug coverage or Medicare Advantage plans.

The department is offering free assistance to Missourians who are eligible for Medicare and their caregivers through the department’s CLAIM program.

CLAIM can also help Missourians on a limited income determine whether they qualify for a Low-Income Subsidy and/or Medicare Savings Programs to offset the cost of their prescription drugs.

Missourians can ask questions by phone or arrange one-on-one counseling by calling 1-800-390-3330 or by visiting MissouriClaim.org.

METH AND MARIJAUANA FOUND DURING TRAFFIC STOP IN STODDARD COUNTY

A rural Dexter man has been taken into custody in connection to a traffic stop earlier this week.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s office, deputies found approximately one-fourth of an ounce of methamphetamine, pills, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia during the stop on Route AD.

Robert Boyer was arrested on felony charges of delivery of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.

Boyer is also facing misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was held in the Stoddard County Jail on a $12,500 cash only bond.

MISSING MAN FOUND SAFE

Updating a story we brought to you yesterday, officials say that a man who was reported missing earlier this week has been located.

According to the Dexter Police Department, 61 year old Robert Watts was reported missing on Monday after attending a friend’s funeral in Chicago.

Police say that Watts has been found and is safe.  

 

MAN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO NEW MADRID SHOOTING INCIDENT

Updating a story we brought to you last week, authorities in New Madrid have made an arrest in connection to a shooting incident.

According to New Madrid Police Chief Joey Higgerson, last week officers were called to the 400 block of Semo Drive in reference to gunshots in the neighborhood.

Witnesses told police that the driver of a blue car was firing at a white car, and that an occupant of the white car was shooting back. The vehicles had both left the scene prior to officers' arrival and there appeared to be no injuries.

Higgerson says that police were searching for Dominiqe Betts for unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Betts was arrested Wednesday during a traffic stop in New Madrid County. 

 

MISSOURI CHANGES SCHOOL GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS EXPOSED TO COVID-19

Missouri education officials say that students, teachers, and staff who were directly exposed to someone with the coronavirus will be allowed to stay in school and participate in sports and extracurricular activities if they follow new guidelines.

The new “test to stay” rules announced this week say anyone exposed to a person with COVID-19 can remain in school if they get frequent negative test results. Local health agencies will determine if the “test to stay” policy will be used in schools in their region.

The rules will require the person who was exposed to have no COVID-19 symptoms for 14 days, with at least three rapid antigen tests taken in the first seven days after exposure.

  

STATE AUDITOR SAYS THAT SOUTHEAST MISSOURI COUNTY IS MAKING PROGRESS

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway says that a Southeast Missouri County is making progress following a 2020 audit that found unpaid payroll taxes cost county taxpayers more than $50,000.

A regularly scheduled audit of New Madrid County in 2020 resulted in a rating of "poor" - the lowest possible rating.

The most significant finding from that audit was that monthly reports and state payroll tax withholdings totaling $382,047 were not received by the state for more than five years, resulting in more than $50,000 in interest costs to the county.

Galloway released her follow up review of New Madrid County yesterday.

In their follow up review, auditors found that the County Clerk is performing documented reviews to ensure state payroll tax withholdings are remitted and monthly reports are filed timely with the DOR.

The review also determined that some steps have been taken towards implementing recommendations relating to the offices of the Sheriff and the Prosecuting Attorney.

Of the 18 audit recommendations reviewed as part of the report, 12 have been implemented or partially implemented, another three are in progress, and three remain not implemented.

DEXTER WOMAN FACING SIX YEARS IN PRISON ON DRUG CHARGE

A Southeast Missouri woman is facing six years in federal prison after pleading guilty on a methamphetamine charge.

Officials with the United States Attorney’s Office tell KWOC News that 43 year old Tori Carlisle, of Dexter, was sentenced Tuesday to serve 72 months in prison for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

Officers arrested Carlisle at a truck stop in New Madrid County on July 25th, 2020 after discovering digital scales and other drug paraphernalia items in her vehicle. During a search incident to arrest, officers found 25 grams of methamphetamine concealed in her shirt.

Two weeks after being released from custody, Carlisle was pulled over for a traffic violation in Mississippi County. Several plastic bags containing approximately 40 grams of methamphetamine were discovered under the driver’s seat.

During her guilty plea hearing earlier this year, Carlisle admitted that she was engaged in the distribution of methamphetamine.

After serving the 72-month sentence, Carlisle will be placed on supervised release for three years.

AUTHORITIES SEARCHING FOR MISSING DEXTER MAN

Authorities in Dexter are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing man.

According to the Dexter Police Department, 61 year old Robert Watts was reported missing on Monday.

Watts was last seen at a friend’s funeral in the Chicago area and is reported to have checked out of the Ashland Hotel in Chicago at around 2 am Monday.

Watts’s cell phone was left in the hotel room and he has not been seen or heard from since.

DEXTER POLICE INVESTIGATING MULTIPLE THEFTS AT AN AREA BUSINESS 

Police in Dexter are investigating multiple thefts at the Gallery and Old Timers Flea Market.

According to the Dexter Police Department, a black male subject, wearing an all-black Nike Jumpsuit, and a black female subject, wearing light blue scrubs, stole an undisclosed amount of money in two separate thefts on Monday.

The suspects were later seen at the Walmart in Dexter where the female committed fraudulent use of a credit device.

The suspects are believed to be driving a silver passenger car.

POPLAR BLUFF NATIVE NAMED ACTING DIRECTOR OF DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES

A Poplar Bluff native will be stepping down from Missouri Governor Mike Parson’s staff to take over the Department of Social Services.

Parson tells KWOC News that his Deputy Chief of Staff Robert Knodell has been named Acting Director of the Missouri DSS. Knodell will resign from the Office of the Governor, effective October 17th, prior to joining DSS.

Current Acting Director Jennifer Tidball will be stepping down from the role to resume her position as Chief Operating Officer of DSS.

POPLAR BLUFF RESIDENTS REMINDED TO NOT PUT YARD SALE SIGNS ON UTILITY POLES

City officials in Poplar Bluff are once again wanting to make sure that local residents are following all regulations regarding yard sales.

Officials are reminding residents that attaching signs to utility poles is illegal. It can damage the poles and the signs often become litter.

The city of Poplar Bluff does not require permits for yard sales and you can find a link to the city’s ordinance for yard sales on the City of Poplar Bluff City Hall Facebook page. 

DEADLINE APPROACHING TO APPLY FOR MISSOURI OUTDOOR RECREATIONAL ACCESS PROGRAM

The deadline is approaching for Missouri residents to apply to make some extra money on their property.

The Missouri Department of Conservation is accepting applications through October 15th for the Missouri Outdoor Recreational Access Program.

Officials say the program provides participating landowners with annual incentive payments of $15 to $25 per enrolled acre and financial assistance to improve wildlife habitat on their properties for public walk-in hunting, fishing, or wildlife viewing.

Public use is limited to foot traffic only. Properties must be open one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset.

A former High School football coach has pleaded guilty to a forgery charge.

According to authorities, Michael Harrell, of Piggott, will have to pay almost $1000 in fees and court costs following his guilty plea on a charge of 2nd degree forgery for forging COVID-19 documents.

Harrell will also not be able to teach for a period of five years.

A woman has been taken into custody in Southeast Missouri after allegedly attempting to flee from police.

According to the Portageville Police Department, on Friday officers recorded a vehicle doing 62 miles per hour in a 25 miles per hour zone and initiated a traffic stop.

During the stop, the driver became very combative towards officers and refused to exit the vehicle.

Officials say the driver tried to place the key back in to the ignition in an attempt to flee. A taser was then used to subdue the driver.

39 year old Jennifer Drake, of Hayti was arrested on charges of resisting arrest, speeding, and disorderly conduct. Following the arrest, she was transported to the Pemiscot County Jail. 

SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED FOR THE 2021 TIGER FEST IN NEELYVILLE

The schedule has been announced for Tiger Fest 2021 this weekend at Neelyville High School.

The event will be from 10 am to 3 pm on Saturday, October 16th.

APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED FOR NEW HIGHWAY PATROL RECRUIT CLASS

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is seeking applicants for its 115th Recruit Class.

Highway Patrol officials tell KWOC News that qualified individuals of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply and that testing will be offered at nine different locations in Missouri.

The selection process is a multi-phase testing procedure which includes a written examination, a physical fitness for duty assessment, polygraph examination, background investigation, and oral interview board.

To be eligible, candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent and be 21 years of age upon graduating from the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy.

BRIDGE REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS THIS WEEK IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route 25 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane for part of this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge repairs.

The section of roadway to be reduced is located from Frontage Road to Lighthouse in Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 am to 3 pm both today and tomorrow.

 

CONSTRUCTION CREWS TO BE WORKING ON DUNKLIN COUNTY BRIDGE TODAY

Route Z in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane so crews can perform bridge repairs. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the work zone will be located from Country Club Road to County Highway Z.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 8 am to 4 pm.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING WRECK NEAR POPLAR BLUFF

One person has died following a wreck near Poplar Bluff.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a truck struck a moped on Westbound US Highway 60 Saturday night, causing the moped to run off the roadway.

The driver of the moped, identified as 37 year old Justin Freeman, of Goodman, Missouri, was pronounced dead at the scene by Butler County Deputy Coroner Bruce Gowens. 

No injuries were listed for the driver of the truck. 

MOTORCYCLE WRECK LEADS TO DEATH OF NORTHEAST ARKANSAS MAN 

A Northeast Arkansas man has died from injuries he received in a motorcycle wreck last week. 

According to the Arkansas State Police, 22 year old Curtis Humes, of Black Rock, was driving a motorcycle on State Highway 115 when he collided with a truck that was pulling into a private drive. 

Officials say that Humes was killed in the wreck.

MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING FOOT PURSUIT IN STODDARD COUNTY

An Oran man has been taken into custody on multiple drug related charges following a pursuit in Stoddard County. 

Chief Deputy Andy Holden with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s office tells KWOC news that a narcotics investigation on Thursday led authorities to Lawrence Woodson at a residence in Dexter. 

When deputies attempted to make contact with Woodson, he fled from the residence on foot. He was taken into custody following a short foot pursuit. 

Woodson was in possession of a firearm, two grams of cocaine, 131 grams of methamphetamine, 19 grams of marijuana, and three Xanax pills. 

He has been charged with felony 1st degree trafficking drugs, unlawful Possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, resisting arrest, and two counts of delivery of a controlled substance. 

Woodson was held in the Stoddard County Jail on a $100,000 cash only bond. 

LINEUP ANNOUNCED FOR 2021 POPLAR BLUFF SHOWDOWN

The eight teams who will be playing in the 2021 Poplar Bluff Showdown have been released. 

Poplar Bluff Athletics Director Kent Keith tells KWOC News that the field will include four Tennessee teams, two Arkansas teams, and two teams from Missouri. 

Poplar Bluff will be joined by Raytown South from Missouri, Fayetteville and Forrest City, from Arkansas, along with Memphis Central, Overton, Haywood, and Jackson South Side, from Tennessee. 

The three day Tournament will begin on Monday, December 27th. 

MALDEN MAN FACING MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES

A Malden man is facing multiple felony charges following his arrest over the weekend. 

According to the Highway Patrol, 46 year old Kendrick Kirkwood was taken into custody early Sunday morning on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine, driving while intoxicated - aggravated offender, and no valid driver’s license. 

Following the arrest, Kirkwood was held at the Dunklin County Jail. 


MOTORISTS WARNED TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR DEER

With temperatures starting to drop, Missouri motorists are being advised to watch for deer. 

Officials say that deer are more active and create hazards for Missouri motorists at this time of year. 

The majority of deer strike crashes occur in October and November each year, with most happening in the 6 to 7 am and  pm timeframes.

Last year, drivers in Missouri experienced 3,639 traffic crashes where deer-vehicle strikes occurred. In these crashes, there were five fatalities and 348 people were injured.

Drivers are reminded that an attempt to avoid striking a deer could result in a more serious crash involving oncoming traffic. As soon as you see a deer, the best course of action is to reduce your speed gradually while watching other traffic around you. 

If you do strike a deer, move your vehicle to a safe location and call 9-1-1 or *55 on a cell phone and report it.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN TO APPEAR IN COURT THIS MONTH ON RAPE CHARGE

A Poplar Bluff man is scheduled to appear in court later this month on multiple charges, including 1st degree rape or attempted rape.

According to Missouri Case Net, a preliminary hearing for Darnell Webb has been scheduled for Thursday, October 21st on charges of 1st degree rape or attempted rape, 1st degree kidnapping, and 3rd degree domestic assault.

THREE PORTAGEVILLE RESIDENTS SENTENCED ON DRUG RELATED CHARGES

Three Portageville residents were separately sentenced yesterday on drug charges.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 46 year old Courtney Williams, 46 year old Clarence Hicks, and 35 year old Durell Antonio Scott were each sentenced to serve sixty months in federal prison.

All three had previously pleaded guilty to distribution of methamphetamine. 

 

MAN ARRESTED ON FLEEING CHARGE IN STODDARD COUNTY

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested an area man on a fleeing charge.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 22 year old Steven Stidmon, of Dexter was recently taken into custody on a charge of resisting arrest, detention, or a stop by fleeing.

Officials say that no bond was set and Stidmon remained in custody. 

 

FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES HOSTING FUNDRAISER THIS WEEKEND IN POPLAR BLUFF

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes will be hosting a fundraising event this weekend in Poplar Bluff.

The Sporting Clays and Crazy Quail fundraiser will begin on Saturday with sign-ins at 9 am followed by the shoot at 10 am.

AREA CIVIC CENTER TO CELEBRATE 100TH ANNIVERSARY

An area civic center will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of its building this weekend.

The Wappapello Civic Center will be honoring 100 years of the Wappapello School and its various uses beginning at 5 pm on Saturday.

There will be food, a dance, a silent auction, and live entertainment.

Proceeds raised from the event will be matched by the Modern Woodmen of America and donated to the Wappapello Civic Center. 

 

CONTRACT AWARDED FOR PAVEMENT IMPROVEMENTS IN WAYNE COUNTY

A contract was awarded yesterday for pavement improvements in Wayne County.

According to officials, The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded an almost five million dollar contract for paving and a culvert extension on Route D between East Fork Lost Creek and Wayne County Road 524.

SEARCH UNDERWAY FOLLOWING SHOOTING IN NEW MADRID

A search is underway in New Madrid in connection to a shooting incident.

According to New Madrid Police Chief Joey Higgerson, on Wednesday morning officers were called to the 400 block of Semo Drive at around 8 am in reference to gunshots in the neighborhood.

Witnesses told police that the driver of a blue car was firing at a white car, and that an occupant of the white car was shooting back. The vehicles had both left the scene prior to officers' arrival and there appeared to be no injuries.

BRIDGE TO BE REPLACED ON ROUTE 142 IN BUTLER COUNTY

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced plans to replace two structures on Route 142 in Butler and Ripley Counties.

According to officials, the Butler County bridge is located over Cane Creek Ditch, near Neelyville, and the Ripley County structure is located over Mill Creek, near Gatewood.

The projects will be let in January 2023, with construction beginning as early as spring of 2023.

As work is underway, the roadway will be closed in the vicinity of each structure for approximately three months. Signed detours will be in place in both locations.

Completion is anticipated for each project by fall of 2023.

   

84 YEAR OLD MAN KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

An 84 year old man has died after being involved in a single vehicle wreck in Eminence.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle driven by Donald Burrus, of Eminence, ran off of a city road Tuesday evening, travelled down an embankment, and struck several trees.

Burrus was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon by Shannon County Coroner Sam Murphy.

AREA SHERIFF’S OFFICE RAISING FUNDS TO ADD A K9 UNIT

An area Sheriff’s Office is raising funds to add a K9 unit to their patrol division.

Stoddard County Sheriff Carl Hefner tells KWOC News that his office is seeking assistance from the community in order to raise funds to place a K9 unit in service.

Hefner says the funds would be utilized for the acquisition of the canine officers, training for the canine and handler, and for equipment.

Anyone who wants to donate should go to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Office in Bloomfield. 

  

TRC CHAMPIONSHIP COLLEGE RODEO TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK

Three Rivers College and the Sikeston Jaycees are teaming up to host the Championship College Rodeo next week.

The Rodeo has been scheduled for October 14th through the 16th at the Art Saunders Arena at the Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo grounds

The Championship is National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association-sanctioned and will feature top competitors from 15 college rodeo teams in the Association’s Ozark Region.

Events will include bull riding, bareback bronc riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, and more.

Championship College Rodeo tickets are available to purchase at Three Rivers College’s Office of Student Accounts in Poplar Bluff.

ONE DEAD, ONE IN CUSTODY, IN CONNECTION TO BUTLER COUNTY SHOOTING

One man is in custody following a fatal shooting in Butler County.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News, that shortly before 11 pm Monday night deputies responded to a report of a person who had been shot in the chest at a location on Butler County Road 309.

The victim, identified as 30 year old Joshua Collins, of Poplar Bluff, was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

MAN DIES FROM INJURIES RECEIVED IN A MOTORCYCLE WRECK IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

One man was involved in a motorcycle wreck Monday afternoon in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 37 year old Bobby McCormick, of Black Rock, was driving the motorcycle on State Highway 90 in Randolph County when he failed to negotiate a curve and travelled into a ditch.

The motorcycle overturned, causing McCormick to be thrown from the vehicle.

Officials say that McCormick was killed in the wreck. 

 

NO INJURIES REPORTED AFTER A HELICOPTER GOES DOWN IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 

A helicopter crashed Tuesday afternoon in Southeast Missouri.

According to authorities, the helicopter crashed in a cornfield near a wooded area and Highway N in Cape Girardeau County.

Few details have been released and no injuries have been reported in connection to the crash. 

 

MISSING NORTHEAST ARKANSAS TEENS FOUND SAFE IN SOUTH DAKOTA

Updating a story we brought to you yesterday, two missing teenagers from Northeast Arkansas have been found safe.  

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, officials received a missing person’s report on Saturday for 17 year old Ashley Darlene Walls and 18 year old Matthew Allen Morrison.

The teens had been out on a day trip beginning at approximately 11:30 am Saturday morning and no one had seen either since.

Officials say that the teens were found safe Tuesday in South Dakota. 

MAN ARRESTED FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Authorities in Southeast Missouri say that a man has been taken into custody for drug trafficking.

According to Portageville Police Chief Ronnie Adams, late Saturday night, his officers received a call about a suspicious vehicle.

The vehicle was later located and officers conducted a traffic stop.

Addams says that during the investigation, officers located over 30 grams of methamphetamine. 

A 55 year old male, from rural Portageville, was arrested for 2nd degree trafficking of a controlled substance. The name of the man was not released. 

MAN FLOWN TO MEMPHIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING CRASH IN MISSOURI BOOTHEEL

A man has been flown to an area hospital after being involved in a wreck in the Missouri Bootheel.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred Tuesday morning on Route D, south of Caruthersville.

70 year old Danny Watkins, of Caruthersville, was pulling from a private drive when his vehicle was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

Watkins suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a Memphis hospital.

TWO DEAD FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Two people have died following a single vehicle wreck over the weekend in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 54 year old Michael Adams, of Eminence, was driving on Shannon County Road 308 early Sunday morning when his vehicle ran off the side of the road and overturned into a creek.

Officials say the wreck occurred at around 12:45 am.

Both Michael Adams and a passenger, 55 year old Kimberly Adams, were pronounced dead at the scene later Sunday morning by Shannon County Coroner Sam Murphy. 

FOOT PURSUIT CAUSES LOCKDOWN OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI SCHOOL

A Southeast Missouri school was placed under lockdown Monday due to a pursuit in the area.

According to the Portageville Police Department, shortly before 1 pm an officer attempted to make contact with a male on East 12th Street near King Avenue.

The man then fled south on foot across the student parking lot at the Portageville High School. 

After a short foot pursuit, officers arrested 24 year old Malik Jones, of Portageville, on two outstanding warrants for felony possession of a controlled substance through New Madrid County, along with trespassing and disorderly conduct.

Officials say that the Portageville School District was placed on lockdown for a short time until the suspect was taken into custody.

Jones is being held on a total $5,250 bond in the Mississippi County Jail. 

15 POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS CHOSEN FOR ALL-DISTRICT CHOIR

Numerous Poplar Bluff High School students have been chosen to participate in the All-District Choir concert in November.

According to school officials, a total of 15 PBHS students were selected for the All-District Choir concert, which will be held at 4 pm on Saturday, November 13th, at Cape Central High School.

During the audition, students were judged on sight-reading and art songs they had prepared.  

PBHS All-District Choir members include:

Emma Harris and Alyssa Roy in the junior/senior soprano section, and Victoria Conover in the freshman/sophomore section;

Lexy Rowland and Emma Tinsley in the junior/senior alto section, and Harley Stilwell in the freshman/sophomore section;

Keith Donnell, Bralin Duckett, Christian Redding and Isaac Reid in the junior/senior tenor section, and Gabriel Burke, Andrew Noble and Jakai Sellers in the freshman/sophomore section; and Brent Hanley and Dawson Vaughan in the junior/senior bass section.

 

FIELDS OF FAITH TO BE HELD THIS WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF

Fields of Faith is scheduled for this week in Poplar Bluff.

Fields of Faith is a student led event where various students can pray and share their faith testimonies.

The event will begin at 7 pm on Wednesday at the Poplar Bluff Junior High Football field.

A free tailgate will start at 6 pm.

In the event of bad weather on Wednesday, there may be a change of location.  

 

ONE INJURED IN NEW MADRID COUNTY CRASH

A collision Sunday evening in New Madrid County has resulted in a man facing a felony charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred when 58 year old Paul Wescoat, of New Madrid, crossed the center of an area county road and struck another vehicle. Wescoat suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

No injuries were listed for the driver of the other vehicle.  

According to an arrest report from the Highway Patrol, Wescoat is facing a felony charge of driving while intoxicated – aggravated offender.

MAN FACING MURDER CHARGE IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

A Kennett man has been charged with murder in connection to the discovery of a body over the weekend.

Kennett Chief of Police Kenny Wilson tells KWOC News that shortly before 5 pm on Saturday, officers were dispatched to an area on Jones Street in reference to a possible deceased person.

The victim was later identified as 76 year old Dewey Ridings, of Kennett. Information about the deceased, including a cause of death, was not available.

ONE DEAD, TWO INJURED, FOLLOWING WRECK NEAR MALDEN

An Ellington man has died from injuries he received in a two vehicle crash over the weekend. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 31 year old Justin Brookman was driving on Highway 25 when his vehicle crossed the centerline and struck another vehicle. 

The wreck occurred Saturday afternoon, just south of the Malden City limits. 

Brookman was pronounced dead at the scene by Dunklin County Coroner James Powell. The driver and a passenger in the second vehicle both suffered serious injuries and were taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital. 

NEW DATE ANNOUNCED FOR POPLAR BLUFF TECHNICAL CAREER CENTER CAR AND MOTOR SHOW

A new date has been announced for the Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center Car and Motor Show. 

The event will begin at 10 am on Saturday, October 30th at the Poplar Bluff High School parking lot. 

Officials say the show had to be postponed from its original date due to weather conditions. All paid pre-registrations will be honored for the new date and accommodations will be made for those with unavoidable conflicts.

DONIPHAN TEENAGER SERIOUSLY INJURED IN OREGON COUNTY CRASH

A Doniphan teenager was one of two people injured in a wreck Friday afternoon in Oregon County. 

According to authorities, the wreck occurred when a vehicle was making a left turn on Highway V at Myrtle and was struck by another vehicle. 

The driver of the second vehicle, 19 year old Hunter Clifton, of Doniphan, was seriously injured in the crash and transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital. 

The driver of the first vehicle suffered minor injuries. 

BUTLER COUNTY TORNADO WARNING SIRENS TO BE TESTED TODAY

Authorities in Butler County will be testing the tornado sirens today.  

According to Butler County Emergency Management Director Robbie Myers, the county’s tornado sirens are scheduled to be tested today at noon.  

Myers says that the tests will be conducted every month on the first Monday.  

STODDARD COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED EARLY THIS WEEK FOR A CULVERT REPLACEMENT

Route AB in Stoddard County will be closed for the early part of this week so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace culverts under the roadway.

According to officials, Route AB will be closed from Route 25 to County Road 503 and between County Roads 514 and 567 .

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 am to 3 pm both today and tomorrow.
