SEARCH UNDERWAY FOLLOWING SHOOTING IN NEW MADRID

A search is underway in New Madrid in connection to a shooting incident.

According to New Madrid Police Chief Joey Higgerson, on Wednesday morning officers were called to the 400 block of Semo Drive at around 8 am in reference to gunshots in the neighborhood.

Witnesses told police that the driver of a blue car was firing at a white car, and that an occupant of the white car was shooting back. The vehicles had both left the scene prior to officers' arrival and there appeared to be no injuries.

Higgerson says that police are currently searching for Dominique Betts in connection to the shooting.

Betts is wanted for unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm. He is being considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached.

BRIDGE TO BE REPLACED ON ROUTE 142 IN BUTLER COUNTY

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced plans to replace two structures on Route 142 in Butler and Ripley Counties.

According to officials, the Butler County bridge is located over Cane Creek Ditch, near Neelyville, and the Ripley County structure is located over Mill Creek, near Gatewood.

The projects will be let in January 2023, with construction beginning as early as spring of 2023.

As work is underway, the roadway will be closed in the vicinity of each structure for approximately three months. Signed detours will be in place in both locations.

Completion is anticipated for each project by fall of 2023.

84 YEAR OLD MAN KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

An 84 year old man has died after being involved in a single vehicle wreck in Eminence.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle driven by Donald Burrus, of Eminence, ran off of a city road Tuesday evening, travelled down an embankment, and struck several trees.

Burrus was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon by Shannon County Coroner Sam Murphy.

AREA SHERIFF’S OFFICE RAISING FUNDS TO ADD A K9 UNIT

An area Sheriff’s Office is raising funds to add a K9 unit to their patrol division.

Stoddard County Sheriff Carl Hefner tells KWOC News that his office is seeking assistance from the community in order to raise funds to place a K9 unit in service.

Hefner says the funds would be utilized for the acquisition of the canine officers, training for the canine and handler, and for equipment.

Anyone who wants to donate should go to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Office in Bloomfield. 

TRC CHAMPIONSHIP COLLEGE RODEO TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK

Three Rivers College and the Sikeston Jaycees are teaming up to host the Championship College Rodeo next week.

The Rodeo has been scheduled for October 14th through the 16th at the Art Saunders Arena at the Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo grounds

The Championship is National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association-sanctioned and will feature top competitors from 15 college rodeo teams in the Association’s Ozark Region.

Events will include bull riding, bareback bronc riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, and more.

Championship College Rodeo tickets are available to purchase at Three Rivers College’s Office of Student Accounts in Poplar Bluff.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY IN CARTER COUNTY

U.S. Route 60 in Carter County will be reduced today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

According to officials, the section of Route 60 to be reduced is located from Route J to Route Y.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6:30 am to 5 pm.

ONE DEAD, ONE IN CUSTODY, IN CONNECTION TO BUTLER COUNTY SHOOTING

One man is in custody following a fatal shooting in Butler County. 

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News, that shortly before 11 pm Monday night deputies responded to a report of a person who had been shot in the chest at a location on Butler County Road 309. 

The victim, identified as 30 year old Joshua Collins, of Poplar Bluff, was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead. 

One male subject has been taken into custody and is being lodged in the Butler County Justice Center. Dobbs says the name of the suspect is being withheld pending formal charges being filed. 

Butler County Coroner Jim Akers tells us that an autopsy for Collins has been scheduled for Wednesday morning in Farmington.

MAN DIES FROM INJURIES RECEIVED IN A MOTORCYCLE WRECK IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

One man was involved in a motorcycle wreck Monday afternoon in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 37 year old Bobby McCormick, of Black Rock, was driving the motorcycle on State Highway 90 in Randolph County when he failed to negotiate a curve and travelled into a ditch.

The motorcycle overturned, causing McCormick to be thrown from the vehicle.

Officials say that McCormick was killed in the wreck. 

NO INJURIES REPORTED AFTER A HELICOPTER GOES DOWN IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 

A helicopter crashed Tuesday afternoon in Southeast Missouri.

According to authorities, the helicopter crashed in a cornfield near a wooded area and Highway N in Cape Girardeau County.

Few details have been released and no injuries have been reported in connection to the crash. 

MISSING NORTHEAST ARKANSAS TEENS FOUND SAFE IN SOUTH DAKOTA

Updating a story we brought to you yesterday, two missing teenagers from Northeast Arkansas have been found safe.  

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, officials received a missing person’s report on Saturday for 17 year old Ashley Darlene Walls and 18 year old Matthew Allen Morrison.

The teens had been out on a day trip beginning at approximately 11:30 am Saturday morning and no one had seen either since.

Officials say that the teens were found safe Tuesday in South Dakota. 

MAN ARRESTED FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Authorities in Southeast Missouri say that a man has been taken into custody for drug trafficking.

According to Portageville Police Chief Ronnie Adams, late Saturday night, his officers received a call about a suspicious vehicle.

The vehicle was later located and officers conducted a traffic stop.

Addams says that during the investigation, officers located over 30 grams of methamphetamine. 

A 55 year old male, from rural Portageville, was arrested for 2nd degree trafficking of a controlled substance. The name of the man was not released. 

MAN FLOWN TO MEMPHIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING CRASH IN MISSOURI BOOTHEEL

A man has been flown to an area hospital after being involved in a wreck in the Missouri Bootheel.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred Tuesday morning on Route D, south of Caruthersville.

70 year old Danny Watkins, of Caruthersville, was pulling from a private drive when his vehicle was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

Watkins suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a Memphis hospital.

SEARCH UNDERWAY FOR MISSING TEENS FROM NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A search is underway for two missing teenagers from Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, officials received a missing person’s report on Saturday for 17 year old Ashley Darlene Walls and 18 year old Matthew Allen Morrison.

The teens had been out on a day trip beginning at approximately 11:30 am Saturday morning from rural Jackson County. No one has had contact with either since.

They were both last seen wearing Newport High School themed clothing and driving a silver 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer with handicapped plates.

The teen’s phones were active in between the Jackson and Woodruff County line and Poplar Bluff early Sunday morning.

Anyone with information on their whereabouts, is asked to contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office at 870-523-5842.

TWO DEAD FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Two people have died following a single vehicle wreck over the weekend in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 54 year old Michael Adams, of Eminence, was driving on Shannon County Road 308 early Sunday morning when his vehicle ran off the side of the road and overturned into a creek.

Officials say the wreck occurred at around 12:45 am.

Both Michael Adams and a passenger, 55 year old Kimberly Adams, were pronounced dead at the scene later Sunday morning by Shannon County Coroner Sam Murphy. 

FOOT PURSUIT CAUSES LOCKDOWN OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI SCHOOL

A Southeast Missouri school was placed under lockdown Monday due to a pursuit in the area.

According to the Portageville Police Department, shortly before 1 pm an officer attempted to make contact with a male on East 12th Street near King Avenue.

The man then fled south on foot across the student parking lot at the Portageville High School. 

After a short foot pursuit, officers arrested 24 year old Malik Jones, of Portageville, on two outstanding warrants for felony possession of a controlled substance through New Madrid County, along with trespassing and disorderly conduct.

Officials say that the Portageville School District was placed on lockdown for a short time until the suspect was taken into custody.

Jones is being held on a total $5,250 bond in the Mississippi County Jail. 

15 POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS CHOSEN FOR ALL-DISTRICT CHOIR

Numerous Poplar Bluff High School students have been chosen to participate in the All-District Choir concert in November.

According to school officials, a total of 15 PBHS students were selected for the All-District Choir concert, which will be held at 4 pm on Saturday, November 13th, at Cape Central High School.

During the audition, students were judged on sight-reading and art songs they had prepared.  

PBHS All-District Choir members include:

Emma Harris and Alyssa Roy in the junior/senior soprano section, and Victoria Conover in the freshman/sophomore section;

Lexy Rowland and Emma Tinsley in the junior/senior alto section, and Harley Stilwell in the freshman/sophomore section;

Keith Donnell, Bralin Duckett, Christian Redding and Isaac Reid in the junior/senior tenor section, and Gabriel Burke, Andrew Noble and Jakai Sellers in the freshman/sophomore section; and Brent Hanley and Dawson Vaughan in the junior/senior bass section.

FIELDS OF FAITH TO BE HELD THIS WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF

Fields of Faith is scheduled for this week in Poplar Bluff.

Fields of Faith is a student led event where various students can pray and share their faith testimonies.

The event will begin at 7 pm on Wednesday at the Poplar Bluff Junior High Football field.

A free tailgate will start at 6 pm.

In the event of bad weather on Wednesday, there may be a change of location.  

ONE INJURED IN NEW MADRID COUNTY CRASH

A collision Sunday evening in New Madrid County has resulted in a man facing a felony charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred when 58 year old Paul Wescoat, of New Madrid, crossed the center of an area county road and struck another vehicle. Wescoat suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

No injuries were listed for the driver of the other vehicle.  

According to an arrest report from the Highway Patrol, Wescoat is facing a felony charge of driving while intoxicated – aggravated offender.

MAN FACING MURDER CHARGE IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

A Kennett man has been charged with murder in connection to the discovery of a body over the weekend. 

Kennett Chief of Police Kenny Wilson tells KWOC News that shortly before 5 pm on Saturday, officers were dispatched to an area on Jones Street in reference to a possible deceased person. 

The victim was later identified as 76 year old Dewey Ridings, of Kennett. Information about the deceased, including a cause of death, was not available. 

Wilson says that an investigation led to the arrest of 49 year old Frankie Pitts, who has been charged with 1st degree murder, 1st degree burglary, unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action, and two counts of tampering with physical evidence. 

Pitts is being held in the Dunklin County Jail without bond. 

ONE DEAD, TWO INJURED, FOLLOWING WRECK NEAR MALDEN

An Ellington man has died from injuries he received in a two vehicle crash over the weekend. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 31 year old Justin Brookman was driving on Highway 25 when his vehicle crossed the centerline and struck another vehicle. 

The wreck occurred Saturday afternoon, just south of the Malden City limits. 

Brookman was pronounced dead at the scene by Dunklin County Coroner James Powell. The driver and a passenger in the second vehicle both suffered serious injuries and were taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital. 

NEW DATE ANNOUNCED FOR POPLAR BLUFF TECHNICAL CAREER CENTER CAR AND MOTOR SHOW

A new date has been announced for the Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center Car and Motor Show. 

The event will begin at 10 am on Saturday, October 30th at the Poplar Bluff High School parking lot. 

Officials say the show had to be postponed from its original date due to weather conditions. All paid pre-registrations will be honored for the new date and accommodations will be made for those with unavoidable conflicts.

DONIPHAN TEENAGER SERIOUSLY INJURED IN OREGON COUNTY CRASH

A Doniphan teenager was one of two people injured in a wreck Friday afternoon in Oregon County. 

According to authorities, the wreck occurred when a vehicle was making a left turn on Highway V at Myrtle and was struck by another vehicle. 

The driver of the second vehicle, 19 year old Hunter Clifton, of Doniphan, was seriously injured in the crash and transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital. 

The driver of the first vehicle suffered minor injuries. 

BUTLER COUNTY TORNADO WARNING SIRENS TO BE TESTED TODAY

Authorities in Butler County will be testing the tornado sirens today.  

According to Butler County Emergency Management Director Robbie Myers, the county’s tornado sirens are scheduled to be tested today at noon.  

Myers says that the tests will be conducted every month on the first Monday.  

STODDARD COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED EARLY THIS WEEK FOR A CULVERT REPLACEMENT

Route AB in Stoddard County will be closed for the early part of this week so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace culverts under the roadway.

According to officials, Route AB will be closed from Route 25 to County Road 503 and between County Roads 514 and 567 .

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 am to 3 pm both today and tomorrow.

BUTLER COUNTY PROSECUTOR TO RECEIVE OVER $100,000 TO INVESTIGATE AND PROSECUTE CRIMINALS WHO VICTIMIZE CHILDREN

Multiple area agencies will be receiving grant funds from the state to investigate and prosecute crimes that victimized children.

According to Missouri Governor Mike Parson, the Butler County Prosecutor’s Office will receive $104,900 from the Missouri Crimes Against Children/Sex Crimes COVID-19 Funding Opportunity, which is administered by the Missouri Department of Public Safety.

The New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office was approved for over $76,000 while the Sikeston department of Public Safety will get over $10,000.

Eligible expenses will include hiring additional investigators and prosecutors, training, and purchasing computer software and equipment utilized to investigate crimes against children.

POPLAR BLUFF TECHNICAL CAREER CENTER TO HOST CAR AND MOTOR SHOW

QULIN HOMECOMING PLANNED FOR THIS WEEKEND

This weekend will mark the return of the Qulin Homecoming.

Organizers say that the opening ceremony will begin at 9:30 am on Saturday and will be immediately followed by the parade, which will start on 5th Street, continue up 2nd street, and end at the firehouse.

There will also be events and vendors available after the parade including the annual pageant, the cornhole tournament, as well as the Bake and Cake wars.

NEW MISSOURI FUEL TAX TO GO IN EFFECT TODAY

Don’t be surprised if you see higher prices at the gas pump today.

Missouri Governor Mike Parson signed a law in July increasing the fuel tax yearly through 2025 with the additional revenue going towards repairs for roads and bridges throughout the state.

Beginning today the new fuel tax will add two and a half cents to the price of a gallon of gas.

In 2025 the state’s fuel tax will be at 29.5 cents a gallon. 

INFORMATIONAL MEETING SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK TO DISCUSS SAM A BAKER STATE PARK

A Missouri State Site informational meeting will be held this weekend to discuss a park in Southeast Missouri.

The meeting is scheduled for 9 am on October 2nd at the Sam A. Baker State Park Amphitheater.

Staff from the park will be on hand to provide information about the park and answer questions from the public.

MOREHOUSE MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING PURSUIT

A Southeast Missouri man is in custody following a pursuit on Tuesday.

According to Portageville Police Chief Ronnie Adams, an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle for speed violation when the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed on Missouri Highway 162.

During the pursuit, an officer blocked the roadway with his vehicle and attempted to deploy spike strips.  The suspect swerved, almost striking the officer.

After an approximately 45 minute pursuit, the suspect vehicle failed to negotiate a curve and crashed at State Highway M and New Madrid County Road 431. 

The suspect then fled on foot.  During the chase, the suspect attempted to assault an officer and a taser was deployed. 

Officers arrested 35 year old Robert Chambers, of Morehouse, on charges including Assault 1st Degree, Armed Criminal Action, and Resisting or Interfering with an arrest for a Felony.

Chambers is being held without bond in the Mississippi County Jail.

MAN WHO ESCAPED FROM AUTHORITIES IN PEMISCOT COUNTY IS BACK IN CUSTODY 

Updating a story we brought to you last week, a man who escaped from authorities in Pemiscot County is back in custody.

According to Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell, on Monday, September 20th, 23 year old Jonathan Stewart, of Hayti, was being escorted to the County Jail from the Courthouse when he broke away from a deputy and ran from the scene.

Greenwell says that Stewart had been sentenced to 120 days for a probation violation on the original charge of Burglary 2nd degree.

Stewart was found Wednesday morning at a residence in Kennett and taken back into custody. 

STUDENT RUN POPLAR BLUFF CAFÉ TO OPEN TODAY

A student run café in Poplar Bluff will be open to customers today.

According to school officials, the Mules Café is set to return from 11 am to 1 pm Thursday and Friday with its very own menu for customers to choose entrees from.

The initial menu will feature fried catfish with a choice of sides and dessert, plus a beverage for just $7. Other October options will include a pulled pork sandwich or BBQ pork nachos, country fried steak or meatloaf, and a cowboy cheeseburger or Swiss mushroom burger.

74TH ANNUAL NATIONAL SOYBEAN FESTIVAL TO BEGIN OCTOBER 3RD IN PORTAGEVILLE

The 74th Annual National Soybean Festival in Southeast Missouri is set for this weekend.

The event has been scheduled for October 3rd through the 9th in Portageville.

One of the main attractions this year will be the National Soybean Beauty Pageant on Sunday, October 3rd. The event will begin at 2 pm at the Grand Stage on Main Street. 

MOTORISTS AND FARMERS ARE URGED TO STAY ALERT ON ROADWAYS

Many area farmers will soon be starting or are already in the process of harvesting their crops and the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety is reminding motorists to be prepared for heavier farm machinery traffic, especially on rural highways.

When you come up behind a tractor or other farm machinery, remember to slow down and be patient. Wait to pass until you have a clear view of the road ahead and there is no oncoming traffic. Never pass on a hill or curve.

Officials say that collisions commonly occur when a motorist tries to pass a left-turning farm vehicle. A tractor that appears to be pulling to the right side of the road to let motorists pass, instead may be preparing to make a wide left turn.

Be sure to watch the farmer’s hand and light signals closely.

NAYLOR RECEIVES GRANT FOR IMPROVEMENTS AROUND THE CITY

The National Park Service has awarded a grant to the city of Naylor for improvements around the city.

The grant award for over 42 thousand dollars is through the Land and Water Conservation Fund state and local assistance program.

Naylor will make improvements to Downtown Park which includes the addition of sidewalks, new pavilions with concrete foundations, lighting, and electrical wiring for festivals and events.

The City will also make improvements at the Judson Ward Park that include the addition of playground equipment, vinyl fencing along Highway 142 for safety, and two new basketball goals.

MISSING WOMAN FOUND SAFE

Updating a story we brought to you earlier this week, authorities in Dexter say that a woman who had been missing since August has been found.

Officials with the Dexter Police Department tell KWOC News that 20 year old Angelina Cook has been found safe.

Cook had been missing since August 12th. No additional information has been released. 

FIRE RESULTS IN TWO DEATHS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Two deaths have been reported in connection to a camper fire last week in Southeast Missouri.

According to authorities, on September 23rd Scott County deputies found two people dead in a camper along a county road in Chaffee.

They have been identified as Christy Wilson, of Sikeston, and John Groves, of Charleston.

The camper had smoke as well as fire damage and no signs of foul play were found.

Preliminary autopsies ruled that smoke inhalation was the cause of death for both people. 

PFIZER COVID-19 BOOSTER SHOTS NOW AVAILABLE TO ELIGIBLE MISSOURIANS

Missouri state officials say that some state residents are now eligible to receive a booster shot of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine.

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Missourians who received the Pfizer vaccine can receive a booster shot at least six months after their initial series depending on a few factors.

Officials say that people 65 years and older and residents in long-term care settings should receive a booster. People aged 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions should also receive a booster.

People aged 18–49 years with underlying medical conditions and people aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may receive a booster.

The list of medical conditions categorized as high-risk by the CDC is available at cdc.gov. Missourians with an underlying medical condition are encouraged to speak with their healthcare provider about whether a booster shot is right for them.

The Pfizer COVID-19 booster shots will be administered anywhere the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is available.

POPLAR BLUFF LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES TO DISCUSS REIMPOSING MASK ORDER

The Board of Trustees of the Poplar Bluff Municipal Library will be meeting this week to discuss mask wearing.

According to a notice from the library, a special meeting is scheduled for noon on Thursday to discuss a recommendation to reintroduce a mask order at the City of Poplar Bluff Municipal Library District facilities.

The meeting will be open to the public at PoplarBluff.org/zoom. 

POPLAR BLUFF RECEIVES GRANT FOR IMPROVEMENTS AT AREA PARKS

The National Park Service has awarded the city of Poplar Bluff a grant to improve two area parks.

The grant award for over 68 thousand dollars is through the Land and Water Conservation Fund state and local assistance program.

Poplar Bluff plans to make improvements to both Hillcrest and Linc Parks through the purchase of new playground equipment and the installation of new fencing and backstops for the park’s athletic fields.

AREA WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WEEKEND WRECK 

An area woman was injured over the weekend in a wreck near Doniphan.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 65 year old Patricia Moman, of Doniphan, was pulling into a driveway when her vehicle was struck by a vehicle that was attempting to pass another vehicle on Highway 142 in Ripley County.

Moman suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital. No injuries were reported for the driver of the vehicle that struck her vehicle. 

VISITS TO RESUME AT MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS FACILITIES

Visits are set to resume this week for offenders in Missouri Department of Corrections facilities.

According to the Missouri Department of Corrections, visiting for all offenders in MDC facilities, regardless of vaccination status, will begin on October 1st.

There will be restrictions in place including everyone having to wear masks and all visits must be scheduled in advance.

The department does not require visitors to be vaccinated. However, they are strongly encouraging all visitors to be vaccinated before visiting to help protect their loved ones and other members of the incarcerated population.

VEHICLE STRIKES BRIDGE ON INTERSTATE 55 IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

A vehicle struck a bridge early Monday morning in Southeast Missouri.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 45 year old Timothy Walton, of Olive Branch, Mississippi, was driving on Interstate 55, in New Madrid County, when his vehicle ran off the left side of the road and struck a bridge pier.

Walton suffered serious injuries and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

Officials say that one bridge pier was destroyed in the wreck, a second pier was damaged, and 20 feet of guard rail was also destroyed. 

ROADSIDE WORK SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK IN DEXTER

Business U.S. 60 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane for part of this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform roadside work. 

The section of roadway to be reduced is located from North Sassafrass Street to North Catapla Street in Dexter.    

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 am to 3:30 pm daily through Thursday.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS IN DUNKLIN COUNTY 

Route MM in Dunklin County will be reduced this week so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform pavement repairs.

According to officials, the work zone will be located from Route J to County Road 692.

Weather permitting, work will take place today and tomorrow from 8 am to 4 pm each day.

DEXTER POLICE SEARCHING FOR WOMAN WHO HAS BEEN MISSING SINCE AUGUST

Authorities in Dexter are searching for a woman who was last seen in August.

According to the Dexter Police Department, 20 year old Angelina Cook was last seen in the Dexter area around August 12th.

She is described as a Caucasian female, five feet, nine inches tall, weighing 125 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

WOMAN FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

An Ellington woman was flown from the scene of a single vehicle wreck Friday afternoon in Southeast Missouri. 

According to authorities, 53 year old Sheila Jordan was driving on Highway 72, near Bunker, when her vehicle ran off the side of the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned. 

Jordan suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was transported by air to a St. Louis hospital.

SENIOR HEALTH FAIR SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF

A health fair for area residents ages 50 and up will be held on Tuesday. 

The free Senior Health Fair from the Butler County Community Resource Council and AmeriCorps Seniors, has been scheduled for 10 am to 2 pm at the Twin Towers in Poplar Bluff. 

There will be multiple services available, including health screenings, eyeglass adjustments, vaccinations, a yoga class, and more.

FISK MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE DRUG CHARGES

Authorities in Butler County have arrested an area man on multiple drug related charges. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 62 year old John McFall, of Fisk, was taken into custody Friday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance for methamphetamine. 

He is also facing misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

Following the arrest, McFall was held at the Butler County Jail. 

FALL SEVERE WEATHER SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK BEGINS TODAY

With today marking the beginning of Fall Severe Weather Safety Awareness Week, the National Weather Service is taking your question.

STODDARD COUNTY ROAD TO BE REDUCED FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENT

Route E in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane early this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

The section of Route E to be reduced is located between County Road 567 and County Road 565.

TWO INJURED IN STODDARD COUNTY WRECK

Two people were injured Thursday morning in a Stoddard County wreck.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 45 year old Ellis Sapp, of Parma, failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Highways 114 and 153 and struck another vehicle.

Sapp suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a Memphis hospital.

The driver of the second vehicle was transported to a Dexter hospital with minor injuries. 

ANTIBODY TREATMENT IN MISSOURI HAS BEEN EXTENDED FOR ANOTHER MONTH

Earlier this week, Missouri Governor Mike Parson announced that Missouri’s six state-contracted monoclonal antibody treatment sites will be operational for an additional 30 days.

Parson says that Monoclonal antibody treatments have been successful for many COVID-19 patients and has lessened the strain on Missouri’s health care systems.

The initial contract was activated by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services in late August to provide infusion treatment for 30 days at sites including Scott, Jackson, Jefferson, and Pettis counties as well as the City of St. Louis.

These sites began operating between August 25th and August 31st. The 30-day extensions will apply to each site's respective operating timeline.

PET SHOW TO BE HELD THIS WEEKEND IN POPLAR BLUFF

A pet show is scheduled for this weekend in Poplar Bluff.

The 2nd Annual All Creatures great and small pet show will be from 11 am to noon on Saturday at the dog park in Downtown Poplar Bluff.

Registration will begin at 10:45 am and there will be multiple categories, including dogs, cats, chickens, goats, reptiles, and more.  

The pet’s vaccinations must be up-to-date and proof must be shown at registration. 

BEAVER LAKE CLEAN UP EVENT SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND

National Public Lands Day is Saturday and area residents will be cleaning up an area lake.

The Clean Up event for Beaver Lake in western Butler County will begin at 8 am on Saturday.

Attendees will be picking up trash from the lake’s shoreline during the event. 

FIVE BRIDGES TO BE REPLACED IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced plans to replace a total of five bridges beginning early next year.

According to MoDOT, three of the bridges are located on Route 162 between Gideon and Portageville, while the other two bridges are located on Route H near Matthews.

Construction on the Route H bridges is expected to start as early as January. Construction on the Highway 162 bridges is expected to begin in February.

As work is underway, the roadways will be closed in the vicinity of each bridge.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING NORTHEAST ARKANSAS WRECK

A woman has died following a wreck early Wednesday morning in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas State Police, the wreck occurred at around 2:30 am Wednesday on Highway 63 in Lawrence County when a vehicle crossed into the opposite lane and struck an oncoming vehicle.

The driver of the first vehicle was killed in the wreck, and her identity has not been released.

The driver of the second vehicle was injured and transported to an area hospital. 

CALIFORNIA MAN SENTENCED FOR SHIPPING METH TO SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A California man is facing 20 years in prison for shipping drugs to Southeast Missouri.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 36 year old Dexter Elcan, of South Gate, California, pleaded guilty in June to possession with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.

Officers from the Southeast Missouri Drug Task Force learned that Elcan was shipping methamphetamine to people in Southeast Missouri.

On the morning of July 11, 2020, officers learned that Elcan was traveling to Missouri and that he had shipped a package to a residence in Poplar Bluff. Officers went to the home where the package was delivered and knocked on the door as Elcan ran out another door and tried to escape.

He was captured a short distance away while trying to break his cell phone and burn the receipt for mailing the package. Officers recovered the package which held 446 grams of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine.

On Wednesday, Elcan was sentenced to 20 years in prison. 

DATE SET FOR FALL BUFF UP THE BLUFF

A date has been set for the 2021 Fall Buff up the Bluff event.

The citywide clean up event has been scheduled for Saturday, October 16th.

The Poplar Bluff Leaf Disposal Site will be accepting items from 8 am to 3:30 pm. The site is located southeast of Twin Towers and signs will be posted. Proof of city residency is required.

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL RECEIVES OVER $5,000 TO HELP STUDENTS PRACTICE ENGINEERING

A Poplar Bluff school has received a substantial grant to help students practice engineering.

According to school officials, the Montgomery Family Foundation, a Georgia-based philanthropy group, has donated around $5,000 to Poplar Bluff High School to purchase several robotics kits.

At the beginning of the month, seven TETRIX FIRST Tech Challenge Competition Sets, valued at about $700 apiece, were delivered to the school science department.

BUTLER COUNTY COMMUNITY OUTREACH DAY SET FOR FRIDAY

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI SCHOOL NAMED NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL

A Southeast Missouri school has been named a 2021 National Blue Ribbon School.

United States Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona has announced that Bloomfield Middle School earned the honor for its overall academic excellence.

The Blue Ribbon is the highest honor achievable for an educational institution in America and a total of only 325 public and private schools across the nation received the award this year. Only eight of the schools were in Missouri.

SEARCH UNDERWAY FOR MAN WHO ESCAPED FROM AUTHORITIES IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 

Residents in the Missouri bootheel are being asked to be on the lookout for a man who escaped from authorities in Pemiscot County.

According to Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell, at around 4 pm Monday afternoon, 23 year old Jonathan Stewart, of Hayti, was being escorted to the County Jail from the Courthouse when he broke away from a deputy and ran from the scene.

He was last seen running west from the courthouse wearing a black shirt and blue jeans.

Greenwell says that Stewart had been sentenced to 120 days for a probation violation on the original charge of Burglary 2nd degree.

Anyone who has information on Stewarts’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office at 573-333-4101.

MULTIPLE PEOPLE ARRESTED FOR OVERHUNTING SQUIRRELS NEAR CURRENT RIVER

Multiple arrests have been made in connection to the overhunting of squirrels at the Current River Conservation Area.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, two agents were able to make contact with a large group of non-resident squirrel hunters in and around the Current River Conservation Area.

The group of 16 had been hunting for two days and harvested 471 squirrels which is 151 over what Missouri regulations allow.

The 16 were all cited for possession over the limit for squirrels and warnings were also issued for failure to keep wildlife separate and identifiable.

The extra squirrels were taken and are being held as evidence.

A car show has been scheduled for early next month in Poplar Bluff.

The Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center will host their Car and Motor Show on Saturday, October 2nd.

POLICE OFFICER AWARDED FOR ACTIONS DURING VAN BUREN FIRE

An area police officer is being applauded for his actions during a fire last week in Van Buren.

Officer Nathan Vails evacuated people from the fire at the Landing on September 15th.

A special ceremony was held on Monday recognizing Officer Vails, who was given the lifesaving medal.  

STODDARD COUNTY FAIR TO BEGIN TODAY

The 2021 Stoddard County Fair is set to begin this evening.

The fair will kick-off with the parade in downtown Dexter at 5:30 pm.

The Dexter Police Department is reminding everyone to remove their vehicles from Stoddard Street by 4:30 pm this afternoon for the parade.

There will be multiple nights of entertainment and events throughout the week, including performances by Maggie Thorn and the Assembly Youth Church Service.

POPLAR BLUFF COURT TO BE OUT OF SESSION FOR TWO WEEKS

A Southeast Missouri courtroom will not be in session for an extended period of time.

Poplar Bluff City Hall announced Monday that the city Municipal Court will not be in session for two weeks.

Anyone who had a court date in that time period will be notified of their new court date.

ONE DEAD, ONE INJURED FOLLOWING NORTHEAST ARKANSAS WRECK

A Pocahontas woman has died from injuries she received in a motorcycle wreck in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas State Police, a vehicle was attempting to make a left hand turn on US Highway 67 on Friday in Pocahontas when the vehicle struck a motorcycle.

The impact caused both the driver and passenger of the motorcycle, identified respectfully as 32 year old Jordan Bullock, of Pocahontas, and 34 year old Sarah Pratt, also of Pocahontas, to be thrown from the vehicle.

Pratt was transported to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead. The severity of Bullock’s injuries were not released.

MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO CONSPIRACY TO DISTRIBUTE HEROIN IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

An Illinois man is facing five to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty on a drug charge.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 46 year old Daryl Wheeler, of Chicago, pleaded guilty on Monday to one count of conspiracy to distribute 100 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of heroin.

Wheeler admitted that he and his associates distributed approximately 538 grams of heroin in Southeast Missouri, including the Charleston area, between September of 2017 and February of 2019.

Officials say that Wheeler’s sentencing is scheduled for December 21st.

TEXAS MAN IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO ALLEGED RAPE IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A Texas man is in custody in connection to a reported rape in Southeast Missouri.

Officials with the Miner Police Department tell KWOC News that they received information last week of a rape that allegedly occurred at an area motel.

An investigation was conducted that led to the arrest of 39 year old Shawn Ogletree, of Schertz, Texas, on charges of 2nd degree rape and supplying alcohol to a minor. 

WANTED MAN ARRESTED FOR NORTHEAST ARKANSAS SHOOTING

Updating a story we brought to you last week, authorities in Northeast Arkansas have arrested a man who was wanted following an area shooting.

According to Greene County Sheriff Steve Franks, on Friday his officers received information that Colton Hardin was seen in the Finch area.

Hardin had been wanted in connection to an incident earlier this month where a man was shot in the leg with an AR-15.

Franks says that Hardin was spotted hiding in a wooded area in the Finch community and numerous agencies were involved in his eventual arrest.

Following the arrest, Hardin was booked into the Green County Jail.

ONE INJURED IN DUNKLIN COUNTY UTV WRECK

A Tennessee man was the only person reported injured following a UTV wreck in Dunklin County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 44 year old Michael McCormick, of Columbia, Tennessee, was a passenger in a UTV that overturned early Saturday morning on Dunklin County Road 725.

McCormick was ejected from the vehicle during the wreck. He was transported to a Hayti hospital with serious injuries. 

GATEWOOD MAN TRANSPORTED TO AREA HOSPITAL AFTER HIS VEHICLE HITS A TREE 

A Gatewood man was taken to an area hospital after being involved in a wreck Saturday afternoon.

According to authorities, 22 year old Justin Howard was driving on Highway P in Ripley County when his vehicle travelled off the left side of the roadway, overturned, and struck a tree.

Howard suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was transported to a Pocahontas hospital.

PUMPKIN HOLLOW OPENING FOR THE FALL SEASON THIS WEEKEND

A popular Northeast Arkansas destination will be opening for the fall season this weekend.

Pumpkin Hollow in Piggott, Arkansas will begin their daytime activities on Saturday.

Attractions will include the pumpkin patch, hayrides, pony rides, the corn maze, and more.

Opening Night for the Horror in the Hollow nighttime attraction will be one week later on September 25th.

30TH ANNUAL OLD GREENVILLE DAYS BEGINS TODAY

ILLINOIS MAN ARRESTED IN WAYNE COUNTY ON FELONY DRUG CHARGE

Authorities in Wayne County have arrested an Illinois man on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 42 year old Mark Hicks, of Dupo, Illinois, was taken into custody Wednesday evening on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Hicks is also reportedly facing a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. 

POPLAR BLUFF JUNIOR HIGH TEACHER AWARDED GRANT FOR PUPPET THEATER

A Poplar Bluff Junior High School teacher has been awarded a $500 grant to create a puppet theater and purchase a digital camera for her drama elective.

According to the Poplar Bluff School District, Hilary Taylor was selected among nine grant recipients in Region 12 of the Missouri Retired Teachers Association out of 112 successful proposals throughout the state.

Taylor said that the project will allow students to interpret literature through various dramatic representations and increase their editing, peer review, and comprehension skills.

Taylor has been selected as a winner of the grant on two previous occasions – to enhance her robotics and honors English classes, respectively.

2021 PALACE OF PRAISE GOLF TOURNAMENT SET FOR THIS WEEKEND

The Palace of Praise’s 2021 Golf Tournament will be held this weekend.

The four person scramble tournament has been scheduled for Saturday, September 18th at the Ozark Ridge Golf Course in Poplar Bluff. The festivities will begin at 8 am with a shotgun start.

STATE OFFICIALS ENCOURAGING PARENTS TO MAKE SURE THEIR CHILDREN ARE BUCKLED UP

Missouri state officials are encouraging parents to make sure their children are buckled up for Child Passenger Safety Week.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, troopers issued citations to 1,040 drivers who failed to secure children less than eight years old in a child restraint/booster seat in 2020.

Troopers also issued citations to an additional 141 drivers who failed to secure a child 80 pounds or more or over 4 foot 9 inches tall in a seat belt in 2020.

Child Passenger Safety Week runs through September 21st.

MASSIVE FIRE DESTROYS VAN BUREN BUSINESS

A Southeast Missouri business was destroyed in a massive fire Wednesday morning.

A spokesman with the Carter County Sheriff’s Department tells KWOC News that at approximately 1 am Wednesday, fire crews from multiple counties responded to a large structure fire at the Landing in Van Buren.

The building is being considered a total loss and an investigation is underway by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Officials say that at this time no injuries have been reported and no foul play is suspected.

A message was posted on the Landing’s Facebook Page, thanking first responders as well as everyone who reached out. The Landing also announced that they are ceasing floating and dining operations for this year.

ARCHERY DEER SEASON UNDERWAY IN MISSOURI

Archery deer season began yesterday in Missouri and the Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding hunters to be safe.

The initial archery season will run through November 12th and hunters are reminded that only one antlered deer may be taken before November 14 and they may take only two antlered deer during the archery and firearms deer hunting seasons combined.

During archery season, hunters can use longbows, compound bows, and recurve bows of any draw weight, crossbows, and hand-held string-releasing devices, among other devices.

DEXTER MAN ARRESTED FOR FAILING TO REGISTER AS A SEX OFFENDER

A Dexter man has been taken into custody on a sex offender charge.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 32 year old Blake Vinson was recently arrested for failure to register as a sex offender – 2nd offense.

Officials say that Vinson remained in custody on no bond.

STODDARD COUNTY RESIDENT CLAIMS $100,000 LOTTERY WIN

A Southeast Missourian has claimed a six figure payout from a $5 lottery ticket.

According to the Missouri Lottery, a resident in Stoddard County scratched their way to a $100,000 top prize on a Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket.

The winning ticket was purchased at a gas station in Cape Girardeau.

DONIPHAN MAN SENTENCED ON FIREARM CHARGE

A Southeast Missouri man is facing multiple years in prison for a firearm charge.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 53 year old Timothy Ossana, of Doniphan, pled guilty last November to a charge of felon in possession of a firearm.

He was sentenced Wednesday to 45 months in prison.

In January of 2020, a state trooper stopped a vehicle in Ripley County for an expired license. During the stop, a citizen brought a pistol to the trooper and stated that he discovered the pistol lying near the roadway where Ossana had just driven.

According to officials, Ossana later admitted that he had been assaulted by some people and that he acquired the pistol for his protection.

CLAY COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE AWARDED BODY ARMOR

A Northeast Arkansas Sheriff Department has gotten some new tools to help keep their deputies safe.

According to Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller, the United States Deputy Sheriff Association has donated body armor to his department.

Miller said in a letter to the Association, that he has only eight full time deputies and a minimal amount of resources, so the body armor will go a long way to help keep them safe in the field.

AUTHORITIES IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS SEARCHING FOR SHOOTING SUSPECT

Authorities in Northeast Arkansas are searching for a suspect in connection to a Monday shooting.

According to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, at around 4:45 pm Monday, his office received a 911 call of a shooting on Greene County Road 716. After the shooting, the suspect ran from the residence into a nearby wooded area.

During the investigation, it was learned that 34 year old Colton Hardin, of the Finch area, had been involved in an argument with another male about a missing gun that Hardin was looking for.

Greene County Sheriff Steve Franks says that during the argument, Hardin allegedly pulled an AR-15 and fired several rounds, striking the victim in the right leg. The current condition of the victim was not released.

Anyone who has information about Hardin’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Greene County Sheriff’s Department at 870-239-6343 or dial 911. 

OUTLET FAILS AT SOUTHEAST MISSOURI DAM 

An outlet has failed at a dam in Southeast Missouri.

According to the United States Forest Service, the outlet is located at the Beaver Lake dam and the lake will not hold water until the outlet is replaced.

Beaver Lake is located west of Poplar Bluff near Stringtown.

Until further notice, the boat ramp is closed and boats needing to be launched with a trailer are not permitted.

Officials say there is a high likelihood that trailers and boats will get stuck in the soft bare soil exposed beyond the ramp.

The Forest Service, along with other interested partners, are seeking funding to make the necessary repairs.   

 ESCAPED SCOTT COUNTY INMATE BACK IN CUSTODY

An escaped inmate in Southeast Missouri has been captured.

According to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, shortly before 11 pm Monday night, deputies were requested to assist the Chaffee Police Department with an inmate who escaped custody.

The inmate was identified as 20 year old Austin Mason, who was in custody for numerous felony charges.

Officials say that Mason was found Tuesday and taken back into custody. 

ADVANCE MAN CONVICTED ON CHILD MOLESTATION CHARGE

An Advance man will be sentenced in November following his conviction on a child molestation charge.

Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Russell Oliver tells KWOC News that on Monday a Stoddard County Jury found David Ryan Troyer, Jr. guilty of 1st degree child molestation. The charge stems from an incident with a young child.

Oliver says that Troyer’s sentencing has been scheduled for November 3rd and he faces a potential life sentence.  

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN INJURED IN SCOOTER CRASH

A Poplar Bluff woman was badly injured Tuesday afternoon in a scooter crash.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 38 year old Misty Wallace was driving the scooter on Butler County Road 390, around a half mile south of Poplar Bluff, when the vehicle overturned and ejected her.

Wallace received serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

INVASIVE PLANT NATIVE TO SOUTH AMERICA FOUND NEAR DEXTER

An invasive plant that is native to South America was recently found in Stoddard County.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, immediate steps are being taken to eradicate the plant known as Alligatorweed that was discovered at Otter Slough Conservation Area near Dexter.

This is the first time the plant has been recorded in Missouri although it has been  found in several southern states.

Officials say that if it is not eliminated, the fast-growing plant could suppress desirable native wetland plants, negatively impacting wildlife and fisheries habitat.

CARTER COUNTY AUTHORITIES SEARCHING FOR MAN WANTED ON MULTIPLE CHARGES

Authorities in Carter County are searching for a man in connection to a search warrant that was executed last month.

According to Carter County Sheriff Dustin Boyer, on August 26th, members of the Carter County Sheriff’s Office and the South-Central Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at a residence on Carter County Road 222.

During the search, officers found methamphetamine and an unlicensed marijuana grow operation. Law enforcement also recovered five vehicles that had been reported stolen from Southeast Missouri and three firearms that had also been reported stolen.

Boyer says that a warrant has been issued for David Emery on numerous charges including two counts of possession of a controlled substance, one count of manufacture of a controlled substance, four counts of stealing for the firearms, and five counts of stealing for the motor vehicles.

50 COMPUTERS DONATED TO POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL

A Poplar Bluff school recently received a donation of numerous computers to help incorporate STEM learning into the curriculum.

According to the Poplar Bluff School District, Sparklight recently donated 50 Google Chromebooks to Lake Road Elementary to be used to teach coding.

The devices have allowed third grade teacher Michelle McDaniel to start the ‘Kids Who Code’ club to teach students how to code.

Around 40 students, in 1st through 6th grades, gather for about an hour and a half in the gymnasium each morning for the club.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN ARRESTED ON CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGE

A Southeast Missouri man is facing a child pornography charge following his arrest last week.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, investigators executed a search warrant at the Ironton residence of 31 year old Thomas Miller on Thursday, September 9th.

As a result of the search, investigators seized child pornography and computer equipment. Miller was later contacted at his place of employment and informed he was under arrest. He reportedly attempted to flee by physically pushing and pulling away from troopers before being placed in custody.

Miller has been charged with five counts of possession of child pornography and one count of resisting or interfering with an arrest.

SIGNUPS FOR POPLAR BLUFF TRAP TEAM TO BE HELD THIS WEEK

Poplar Bluff students who are interested in trapshooting will have an opportunity to register for the trap team this week.

First Round Signups for the Poplar Bluff Trapshooting Team have been scheduled for 5:30 to 6:30 pm tomorrow.

The registration event will be held in the lobby of the Poplar Bluff Middle School gym. 

SURFACE TREATMENT SCHEDULED FOR TODAY ON US HIGHWAY 60 AND INTERSTATE 57

Interstate 57 and U.S. Route 60 in Mississippi, New Madrid, Scott and Stoddard Counties will be reduced to one lane in each direction today as contractor crews improve the driving surface.

The section of roadway to be reduced will be located at various places between Route B in Bertrand and Route 25 in Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 6 am to 5 pm.

SURFACE TREATMENT SCHEDULED FOR TODAY ON US HIGHWAY 60 AND INTERSTATE 57

Route WW in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane over two days so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform pavement repairs.

Officials say that the work zone will be located from Route U to Route P.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 am to 3 pm both today and tomorrow.

9-11 REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY HELD IN POPLAR BLUFF

Saturday was the 20th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks and a special remembrance ceremony was held in Poplar Bluff. 

The keynote speaker was the United States Congressman from southeast Missouri Jason Smith, who spoke about the lives that were lost 20 years ago. 

There were also multiple guest speakers at the event, including Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whiteley, Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs, and Missouri Senator Jason Bean.

MAN FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A MOTORCYCLE WRECK INVOLVING A DEER

A Malden man was flown from the scene of a wreck Thursday in Iron County. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 59 year old Gary Sutton was riding a motorcycle on Iron County Road 160, near Des Arc, when the vehicle struck a deer in the roadway. 

Sutton, who was reportedly not wearing a safety device, suffered serious injuries in the crash. He was transported by air to a St. Louis hospital. 

GREENVILLE RESIDENT SERIOUSLY INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

One man was injured in a single vehicle wreck Friday evening. 

According to authorities, the wreck occurred shortly before 6 pm Friday on Highway 49, five miles east of Williamsville. 

A vehicle travelled off the side of the roadway, overturned, and struck a tree. 

The driver, identified as 26 year old Conagher Marler, of Greenville, was ejected from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries. 

Officials say he was later flown to a St. Louis area hospital. 

HIGHWAY 67 IN BUTLER COUNTY TO BE CLOSED THIS WEEK

Median repairs are going to force the closure of a portion of US Route 67 in Butler County this week. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the closure will be located from the ramp at Missouri Route 158 to Route C.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Wednesday, September 22nd from 7 am to 4:30 pm, each day.

NEW MADRID COUNTY ROAD REDUCED TODAY FOR REPAIRS

Route EE in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The work zone will be located from Route 61 to County Road 314.

Work is scheduled to take place today from 8 am to 3 pm.

THREE RIVERS SHRINE RODEO COMING TO POPLAR BLUFF TONIGHT

The Three Rivers Shrine Pro Rodeo is set for tonight in Poplar Bluff.

The event will begin at 7pm both tonight and tomorrow night at the Black River Coliseum.

A ticket for Saturday will also allow entry to the Mini Buckers Matinee Show at 2 pm on September 11th.

Tickets can be purchased at the Black River Coliseum box office or at ticketmaster.com. All proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Three Rivers Shrine Club. 

30TH ANNUAL OLD GREENVILLE DAYS SCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEEKEND

Preparations are underway for the 30th Annual Old Greenville Days.

According to the US Army of Corps of Engineers, the Greenville Day Use area will be the location for the event from September 17th through the 19th.

There will be live music all weekend, along with craft and food vendors as well as games and activities.

RETIREMENT CELEBRATION TO BE HELD THIS WEEKEND FOR COACH GENE BESS

A retirement celebration will be held this weekend for former Three Rivers College men’s basketball coach Gene Bess.

Bess retired last year after 50 seasons with the Raiders, where he amassed 1,300 career wins and two national championships.

The celebration for Bess will be held at 5 pm on Saturday at Mt. Calvary Powerhouse Church in Poplar Bluff. 

MALDEN MAN FACING DWI CHARGE FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

A Malden man is facing a DWI charge following a single vehicle wreck early Thursday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 20 year old Dylan Wyman was driving on Dunklin County Road 247 at around 2 am when his vehicle ran off the roadway, struck a ditch, and overturned.

Wyman suffered moderate injuries in the wreck and was taken by helicopter to a Memphis hospital.

According to an arrest report from the Highway Patrol, Wyman is facing a charge of driving while intoxicated – alcohol. 

DOGGIE SWIM DAY SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND IN POPLAR BLUFF

Dog owners in Poplar Bluff are invited to bring their pooches to the city pool in Hillcrest Park this weekend for Doggie Swim Day.

The event, hosted by the Animal Welfare Alliance and Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, is scheduled for 2 to 4 pm on Saturday.

Tickets are $1 per dog and dogs in attendance must be leashed and up to date on vaccines. Owners are asked to bring proof of the vaccinations.

BULKY ITEM PICK UP TO BE CONDUCTED NEXT WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF

With fall on the way and many people doing cleaning projects, Poplar Bluff officials are reminding city residents that the city offers bulky item pickups once a month.

Residents can purchase bulk item tags from the city collector’s office at city hall for $20. The tags entitles you to the removal of four bulk items, such as couches or refrigerators. Tires may be collected for a charge of $3 per tire with a limit of four tires.

No construction materials or small items will be picked up and the program is for residential areas only.

Today is the final day to purchase item tags at City Hall to be included in next week’s pick up, which will be conducted on September 14th.
