POPLAR BLUFF MAN SAVES WIFE AND GRANDCHILDREN FROM HOUSE FIRE

A Poplar Bluff man is in a St. Louis hospital after saving his family members from a house fire.

KWOC News spoke with Battalion Chief Stacy Harmon with the Poplar Bluff Fire Department about the incident.

“A little after 2 am this morning we received a call of a reported structure fire in the 700 block of South C Street with a person trapped inside that structure. We responded three engines to that address, the first engine that pulled up found a single story wood frame house that had heavy flame coming from all sides of the house except one.

We were met by a Poplar Bluff Police Officer that was on scene that said he had made contact with the family, a woman, another young woman, and a small juvenile, and stated that there was a gentleman that was trapped inside the bedroom in the front of the house. At that time, the first engine company, which was myself and one other guy, tried to make entry through the front door, we couldn’t get in because of heavy flame impingement, and we didn’t want to push fire into the bedroom where the gentleman was trapped.

At that time the second engine pulled up, and we had to take a chainsaw and breach the wall. Once we breached the wall we were able to gain entry into the room where he was and locate him. It took four of us to extricate him from the structure. We were able to get him out and EMS met us there on scene, and they started CPR and transported him to a local emergency room.

The female victim had told the police officer that was there on scene that her husband had awoken and noticed that the house was on fire and went and got her and the two granddaughters and got them to the front bedroom, which was the only option they had as far as an exit. He was able to get them squeezed through a small bedroom window to safety, but he was unable to get through the window himself.

When we pulled up they were telling us that the last place they had saw him was in that window and the bedroom that we found him in was right there where they told us.

A bad situation that we encountered would have been a whole lot worse because in my mind he saved his family’s life. Him waking up and getting them out of the house is what saved them. Butler County EMS transported all four to the local ER and the information we received is that the three females were checked for smoke inhalation and some minor scratches. The gentleman, we don’t really know the status of him, we just know that he is still alive right now.

The training kicks in, we did a wall breach, which is something we are taught as a last resort if we can’t get access to somebody and they performed it flawlessly.

They know what to do, I don’t have to tell them and they did their job, plain and simple. And that’s what they’ll tell you, they’re just doing their jobs.”

The man has been identified as 64 year old Alex Clinton, of Poplar Bluff. He was transported to a St. Louis hospital and his condition is not available at this time.

The fire is currently under investigation by the State Marshal’s Office and the Poplar Bluff Fire Department.

MARBLE HILL MAN IN CUSTODY ON FORRICBLE RAPE CHARGE IN STODDARD COUNTY

A Southeast Missouri man is facing multiple charges in connection to an alleged sexual assault.

Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Russell Oliver tells KWOC News that he has filed felony charges of forcible rape in the first degree, forcible sodomy in the first degree, kidnapping, domestic assault, and armed criminal action against Ryan Brown, of Marble Hill.

The charges are related to a sexual assault that is alleged to have occurred on August 8th.

A warrant was issued for Brown with no bond allowed and he was apprehended on Tuesday following an extensive search by the Dexter Police Department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the US Marshall’s Office, and the Stoddard, Bollinger, and Mississippi County Sheriff’s Offices.

Oliver says that due to the graphic nature of the allegations, no further details of the events will be released by the Prosecutor’s Office. 

SURVEY INDICATES EF-0 TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN IN BUTLER COUNTY

A preliminary survey of the severe weather that crossed Southeast Missouri on Sunday indicates that a tornado touched down briefly in Butler County.

According to the National Weather Service, the EF-0 tornado touched down at 7:14 pm at a residence along Highway 53, around 4 miles northwest of Qulin.

The tornado lifted the front porch roof covering up and over the house, causing damage to the backside of the roof before landing in the backyard.

Officials say that a few trees were snapped on the property, as well.

The tornado had an estimated peak wind speed of 85 miles an hour with a maximum width of 50 yards. The length was estimated at around a tenth of a mile. 

MEDICAID EXPANSION TO BE ALLOWED AFTER COURT RULING

A Missouri judge says Governor Mike Parson can no longer deny Medicaid health care to thousands more newly eligible adults.

Cole County Judge Jon Beetem issued the order Tuesday. Missouri voters in 2020 approved the constitutional amendment making more low-income adults eligible for the government health care program.

Governor Parson announced Wednesday that the Missouri Department of Social Services will begin allowing individuals to apply for the MO HealthNet program.

The expansion amendment also legally requires the state to maximize federal funding.

Missourians who believe they are eligible for MO HealthNet benefits under the expanded Medicaid eligibility may go to MyDSS.MO.Gov to apply.

Parson says that DSS will begin making eligibility determinations once MO HealthNet's software is updated to reflect the court order. Due to current staffing capacity and funding restraints, the required system update is anticipated to take up to 60 days.

ROAD CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN BUTLER AND STODDARD COUNTIES

Route U in Butler and Stoddard Counties will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway to be reduced is located from County Road 668 to County Road 675.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 am to 3 pm.

11th ANNUAL ST. JUDE ARCHERY SHOOT SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND

Archers will be taking up their bows this weekend to raise money for the kids at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The 11th Annual St. Jude Archery Shoot will begin this Saturday morning at 8 am at the Missouri Department of Conservation Archery Range on NN Highway near Poplar Bluff.

Officials say that this year the shoot is a Scholastic 3-D Archery sanctioned event, which means it will also serve as a regional qualifier for S3DA.

There will also be a free youth archery camp beginning at noon.

KELLYANNE CONWAY TO APPEAR AT CAMPAIGN RALLY TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

One of the senior counselors to former President Donald Trump will be appearing at a campaign rally today in Poplar Bluff.

Kellyanne Conway is scheduled to be at a rally for Congressman Billy Long beginning at 11 am this morning at the Black River Coliseum.

Long has served as the United States Representative for Missouri’s 7th Congressional district since 2011.

He is seeking the seat that is currently held by Senator Roy Blunt, who has announced that he will not seek reelection next year. 

NATIONAL EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM TEST SET FOR THIS AFTERNOON

Don’t be surprised if you get an emergency alert on your phone this afternoon.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and Federal Communications Commission will be conducting a national test of the Emergency Alert System this afternoon at 1:20 pm.

Officials say that the test will go to radios and televisions, while specifically configured cell phones will also receive an emergency alert test code message. 

BEAM SIGNING CEREMONY TO BE HELD TODAY FOR NEW POPLAR BLUFF POLICE DEPARTMENT

A ceremony will be held today at the site of the new Poplar Bluff Police Department facility.

The public is invited to attend the beam signing ceremony, which is scheduled for noon today.

Some attendees will also get the chance to sign a steel beam that will be at the site of the new Police Department facility at 911 Shelby Road, just south of PP Highway.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation will be in Butler County today for two separate pavement repair projects.

Highway 53 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane from Route CC to Strawberry Lane for repairs.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6:30 am to 12 pm.

Route OO in Butler County will also be reduced to one lane today from noon to 3:30 pm due to the repairs.

The work zone for that project will be located between Route FF and County Road 638. 

RIPLEY COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY

Route Z in Ripley County will be temporarily closed as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway to be closed is located from County Road Z-5 to Route 142.

Weather permitting, work is scheduled to take place today from 7 am to 4:30 pm.

NO INJURIES REPORTED AFTER BUILDING COLLAPSES IN NEW MADRID

A building collapsed Monday morning in New Madrid.

According to the New Madrid Police Department, the building was located on Main Street between Mill and Mott Streets. 

Officials say that no injuries have been reported in connection to the collapse.

POPLAR BLUFF AUTHORITIES TRYING TO IDENTIFY SUBJECTS IN CONNECTION TO COIN MACHINE BREAK INS

Poplar Bluff police are asking for the public’s help in identifying multiple subjects who are suspected of breaking into area coin machines.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, video footage was captured of a total of four subjects. The subjects are suspected of breaking into coin machines at multiple businesses in Butler County.

The video is available on the Poplar Bluff Police Department Facebook page.

POPLAR BLUFF CELEBRATES MISSOURI’S BICENTENNIAL

Today marks the 200th anniversary of the state of Missouri joining the United States and multiple events are planned for today in Poplar Bluff to celebrate.

The Missouri Bicentennial Block Bash will kick off at 11 am with hot dogs and chips available at Southern Care and Comfort. Beginning at noon the Art Museum will be presenting sidewalk chalk and crafts.

The Poplar Bluff Historic Train Depot will be offering root beer floats from 1 to 5 pm this afternoon and the History Museum will be hosting an ice cream social from 4 to 8 pm.

President James Monroe approved statehood and entry into the United States of America for the state of Missouri on August 10th, 1821. Missouri was the 24th state to enter the union. 

74TH PUXICO VFW HOMECOMING BEGINS TODAY

Today is the beginning of the 74th Puxico VFW Homecoming.

The official opening is scheduled for 10 am this morning in Puxico. Events are scheduled for every day through Saturday including the Miss Puxico contest tonight, Church night on Wednesday, and music in Veterans Park on Thursday.

Saturday will include the Goat Run 5K, parade, and quilt show, among other events.

TWO RIPLEY COUNTY ROADS TO BE CLOSED TODAY

Two roads in Ripley County are scheduled to be closed today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform pavement repairs.

According to MoDOT, Route CC will be closed from Route 21 to County Road CC-1, while Route FF will be closed from Route 21 to County Road A-2.

Weather permitting, work will take place on both projects from 7 am to 4:30 pm. 

PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO FORCE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF ROUTE FF IN WAYNE COUNTY

Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation will be in Wayne County for a road project today.

According to officials, Route FF in Wayne County will be closed from 7 am to 3:30 pm today as crews perform pavement repairs. 

The work zone will be located between Route 34 and Route U.

STORM DAMAGES HOME IN BROSELEY AREA

A storm system crossed Southeast Missouri yesterday bringing heavy rains and high winds to the area.

According to the National Weather Service, a tornado warning was in effect for a portion of Sunday evening in east central Butler County, Southwestern Stoddard County and Northern Dunklin County. 

A trained spotter reported a funnel cloud dipping up and down approximately one mile north of Qulin at 7:30 pm.

A home received roof damage four miles southwest of Broseley. Officials also reported trees and powerlines down along and near Highway 53.

As of 10 pm Sunday, Ozark Border Electric Cooperative reported that there were 351 outages in Butler County and 486 in Dunklin County. 

HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FOR MOST OF MONDAY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Most of Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas will be under a heat advisory today. 

According to the National Weather Service, the heat advisory will begin at 11 am this morning for multiple Southeast Missouri counties, including Butler, Wayne, Carter, Ripley, Stoddard, and others. A heat advisory will be in effect at 10 am for the Missouri bootheel and portions of Northeast Arkansas. 

Hot temperatures and high humidity are expected to cause heat index readings to peak at around 105 degrees.

Officials say that we also have chances of scattered thunderstorms today that may provide a temporary relief from the heat. 

DEXTER WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN CRASH INVOLVING A DUMP TRUCK

A Dexter woman has been flown to a regional hospital following a crash on Friday. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle driven by 51 year old Lisa Pennington pulled into the path of a dump truck Friday morning on Route PP near Puxico. 

Pennington suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was taken by air to a St. Louis hospital. No injuries were listed for the driver of the dump truck. 

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN ARRESTED ON COCAINE CHARGE

Authorities in Southeast Missouri have arrested an area man on a cocaine charge. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 49 year old Byron Howard, of Sikeston, was taken into custody shortly before noon Saturday on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance for cocaine. 

Howard is also facing charges of DWI-Alcohol, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, and excessive window tint. 

Following the arrest, he was transported to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety. 

SIX INJURED, INCLUDING FIVE TEENAGERS, IN DUNKLIN COUNTY WRECK

A total of six people were injured in a two vehicle wreck Friday night in Dunklin County. 

According to authorities, the crash occurred shortly after 9 pm Friday on Highway 53 near Campbell when a vehicle, driven by a 16 year old female from Malden, turned into the path of another vehicle. 

The teen, along with four teenage passengers in her vehicle, suffered minor injuries. The driver of the other vehicle also received minor injuries. 

All six were transported by ambulance to a Poplar Bluff hospital. 

ROAD REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation will be in Stoddard County today to perform pavement repairs. 

According to officials, Route M will be reduced from Route 25 to Route BB for the repairs.

Weather permitting, work is scheduled to take place from 6:30 am to 5 pm.

EXCLUSIVE: POPLAR BLUFF POLICE CHIEF SPEAKS ON PANHANDLING IN POPLAR BLUFF

Many Poplar Bluff residents have noticed an increase in panhandling recently in the city.

In an exclusive interview, Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whiteley spoke with KWOC News about the legality of panhandling and his thoughts on the matter. 

“With today’s rulings in court, it is not a crime to do panhandling. There has been a case just recently in St. Louis where an individual was awarded $150,000.
The local authorities had contested him doing that and in federal court, under first amendment rights, he was awarded $150,000. So that’s made everybody rethink and relook at their ordinances on panhandling. If you have a complaining witness that says someone was interfering with traffic as a victim, that’s something that we can look at. But you have to have someone willing to testify and someone willing to sign a statement before that can be done.
My suggestion is if you don’t have people that are contributing to the various, what appears to be, or we know one group is an out of town group of panhandlers. To give to your local charities, through the Bread Shed or through Bishop Webb’s church, or stuff like that where it’s all known.
They will get it to the local people in need. If they don’t have enough contributions to make it worthwhile to come here, they are going to go other places, and that would be my suggestion.”

BUTLER COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT NOW CARRYING PFIZER VACCINE FOR AGES 12-17

Butler County health officials say that teenagers will have opportunities to get vaccinated for COVID-19 before the school year begins.

According to the Butler County Health Department, they are now carrying the Pfizer vaccine for anyone between the ages of 12 and 17.

The vaccine will be offered during the weekly Friday vaccine clinics at the Health Department.

13TH ANNUAL MULE SKINNER GOLF TOURNAMENT SET NEXT WEEK

The 13th Annual Mule Skinner Golf Tournament is coming up next week.

The 4 person scramble tournament will be held on Friday, August 13th at the Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff. Check in time is 11:30 am with a shotgun start at 1 pm.

Organizers say the entry fee is $600 per team, which includes a cart and lunch. Hole sponsorships are available for $100 per hole.

NEW STATEWIDE CAMPAIGN ENCOURAGES SAFE DRIVING AROUND LARGE TRUCKS AND BUSES

The Missouri Department of Transportation has kicked off an almost month-long campaign urging motorists to drive safely around large trucks and buses.

Drivers will be seeing “Respect the Load. Share the Road” across the state as a part of the campaign.

Officials say that commercial motor vehicles make up 20 percent of Missouri’s interstate traffic and research shows that in most crashes involving CMVs, drivers of passenger cars unnecessarily endanger themselves by not paying attention and driving aggressively around the large vehicles.

PARAGOULD BACK TO SCHOOL BASH TO BE HELD AT REYNOLDS PARK

The Junior Auxiliary of Paragould will be hosting a “Back to School Bash” this weekend.

The event has been scheduled for 2 pm on Sunday, August 8th at Reynolds Park in Paragould.

DEXTER HOSPITAL REOPENS FOLLOWING TORNADO DAMAGE REPAIRS

A Stoddard County hospital has reopened after receiving damage from a tornado last month.

According to officials, Southeast Health Center of Stoddard County has reopened its Emergency Services, Behavioral Health, and Inpatient units.

The hospital’s Imaging Department, Lab, and Respiratory Therapy are fully functional for inpatient or Emergency Services use.

Officials say that damages have been repaired in these areas and extensive, additional testing has been completed to ensure patient safety.

Outpatient services, including Imaging, Mammography, Lab and Physical Therapy are expected to reopen at full capacity later this week.

FACE COVERINGS NOW REQUIRED IN BUTLER COUNTY COURTS

Rising Covid-19 cases in Missouri have forced the return of mask requirements in Butler County Courts.

Michael Pritchett, presiding judge of the 36th Judicial Circuit Court, has announced that all persons admitted to the public areas of the Butler County and Ripley County Courts facility or the Butler County Juvenile Facility will be required to wear a face covering that covers the mouth and nose beginning at 9 am this morning.

The order also covers the municipal division of the city of Poplar Bluff.

According to the Butler County Health Department, there has been 183 new Covid-19 cases over the past week, bringing the total active cases in the county to 204. There have also been two new COVID related deaths in Butler County. 

PIEDMONT MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON MULTIPLE DRUG CHARGES

Authorities in Wayne County have arrested an area man on multiple drug charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 53 year old Daniel Whitley, of Piedmont, was taken into custody Wednesday morning on a total of four felony charges of possession of a controlled substance for diazepam, hydrocodone, oxycodone, and amphetamine.

Following the arrest, Whitley was held at the Wayne County Jail. 

FIRST RESPONDERS BALL TO BE HELD IN SEPTEMBER

A date has been set for the 4th Annual First Responders Ball.

The event will be held on Saturday, September 11th at the Aad Grotto Shriners Hall.

The theme is “Prom Night, a night to celebrate our first responders.” Formal attire is encouraged.

The ball will begin at 6 pm. Tickets are $25 and all proceeds will benefit supporting heroes. 

TWO STODDARD COUNTY ROADS TO BE REDUCED TODAY FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENTS

Two Stoddard County roads will be reduced today for road projects.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route AB will be reduced between County Roads 514 and 567 from 7 am to 3 pm for a culvert replacement.

Crews will also be reducing Route 25 from 7 am to 4 pm today for drainage repairs. The work zone for that project will be located from Route AC to Route E.

WAYNE COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS

Route FF in Wayne County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of Route FF to be closed is located from Route 34 to Route U.

Work is scheduled to take place from 8 am to 4:30 pm.

RETIREMENT CELEBRATION TO BE HELD NEXT MONTH FOR COACH GENE BESS

A retirement celebration will be held next month for former Three Rivers College men’s basketball coach Gene Bess.

Bess retired last year after 50 seasons with the Raiders, where he amassed 1,300 career wins and two national championships.

The celebration for Bess will be held at 5 pm on Saturday, September 11th at Mt. Calvary Powerhouse Church in Poplar Bluff.

VEHICLES STOLEN FROM DEXTER BUSINESS HAVE BEEN RECOVERED

Updating a story we brought to you last week, officials in Dexter say that two vehicles that were stolen from an area business have been recovered.

According to the Dexter Police Department, multiple off road vehicles were stolen from M2 Outdoors on Wednesday, July 28th, between 1:50 and 3:30 am.

The suspect vehicle is described as a silver Ford F-150 crew cab which was pulling a bumper pull trailer.

Police officials reported Tuesday that the stolen side by side and ATV have been recovered.

The investigation into the thefts is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Thomas Forkum at 573-624-5512, extension 4.  

NEELYVILLE STUFF THE BUS EVENT SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND

A Stuff the Bus event will be held this weekend to help children in the Neelyville School District.

The event is scheduled for 8 am to 5 pm at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Poplar Bluff.

Neelyville School officials also say that offices on all campuses will be open for enrollments and information updates beginning August 9th.

Kindergarten Orientation will be held at 6 pm on Tuesday, August 17th. The Open House for grades one through 12 will start at 6 pm on Thursday, August 19th.

HORNERSVILLE WATERMELON FESTIVAL SET FOR NEXT WEEK

A date has been set for the 2021 Hornersville Watermelon Festival.

The event has been scheduled for 10 am to 10 pm on Saturday, August 14th on Main Street in Hornersville.

There will be multiple attractions during the festival, including a parade, live music, a wiffleball tournament, a cornhole tournament, and various watermelon contests. 

PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT UNDERWAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

A month-long pavement repair project is underway in Butler County.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Southbound Route 67 in Butler County is being reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction through Thursday, September 2nd, so contractor crews can perform pavement repairs.

The work zone is located between Route 160 and County Road 276.

Officials say there will be 24-hour lane closures at various locations throughout the work zone during the project.

TWO RIPLEY COUNTY ROADS TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS

Both Route W and Route AA in Ripley County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

Route W will be closed from Route 142 to County Road W-5E, while Route AA is being closed from Route W to County Road 142E-46S.

Work will take place in both locations from 7 am to 5 pm.

MOFFITT SWORN IN AS POPLAR BLUFF FIRE CHIEF

The city of Poplar Bluff has a new fire chief.

Mike Moffitt was officially sworn in last night as the chief of the Poplar Bluff Fire Department during a meeting of the Poplar Bluff City Council.

A pinning ceremony was conducted during the meeting by outgoing Chief Stucker and the family of Chief Moffitt.

Moffitt served as the interim chief in 2020. He had previously been hired as a firefighter in 1996 and was promoted to the role of battalion chief in 2008. 

VIRTUAL HEARING SCHEDULED FOR TODAY TO DISCUSS FUTURE INTERSTATE 57 IN BUTLER COUNTY

A virtual public hearing has been scheduled for today to discuss the project to upgrade US Route 67 in Butler County.

According to officials, the hearing will be held from 4 to 6 pm, with a formal presentation beginning at 4 and then being repeated at 5 pm.

Throughout the online hearing, there will be opportunities for attendees to ask questions or share comments.

The proposed project includes upgrading Route 67 to interstate standards from the Route 160/158 interchange south of Poplar Bluff to the Missouri/Arkansas state line.

MULTIPLE EVENTS PLANNED FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS AT TWIN RIVERS HIGH SCHOOL

New school year preparation events are in full swing in Southeast Missouri and multiple events have been planned over the next couple of weeks at Twin Rivers High School.

Today the high school will be hosting new student enrollment and parental help with completing online registration paperwork from 1 to 7 pm. Both events will also be available this Thursday from 1 to 7 pm.

Tomorrow, there will be a back to school drive thru fair from 1 to 5 pm.

The dates have been announced for the 2021 Butler County Fair.

The event is scheduled to be held this year on October 29th and 30th at Ray Clinton Park in Poplar Bluff.

TWO STODDARD COUNTY ROADS TO BE REDUCED TODAY FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENTS

Two Stoddard County roads will be reduced today for culvert replacements.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route WW will be reduced between County Roads 436 and 442 for the project.

Crews will also be reducing Route 25 between Routes M and AB.  

Both projects are scheduled to be conducted today from 7 am to 4 pm. 

ROAD CLOSURE THIS WEEK IN NEW MADRID COUNTY FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS

A portion of Route MM in New Madrid County has been closed so Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The closure is located from Route D to County Road 621.                       

Weather permitting, the road is scheduled to re-open on Thursday at 5 p.m.

VEHICLE PURSUIT LEADS TO DRUG BUST IN POPLAR BLUFF

A vehicle pursuit over the weekend led to a drug bust in Poplar Bluff.

Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whiteley tells KWOC News that an officer stopped a vehicle Saturday for an improper tag. During the stop, the vehicle fled.

The pursuit continued with the vehicle reaching speeds of around 80 miles per hour until officers lost sight of the vehicle on South Westwood Boulevard. A short time later, a report came in of a vehicle in the ditch on Linwood Drive.

Two subjects at the scene were identified by a detective and taken into custody.

The subjects, 43 year old Quinton Wilson, of Lawrence, Kansas, and 37 year old Courtney Wilcox, of Kansas City, Kansas, were each booked on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, unlawful use of a weapon, and felony resisting arrest.

Wilcox is also facing charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Wilson is being held on no bond while Wilcox is being held on a $25,000 cash or surety bond. 

MISSOURI GOVERNOR TO BE IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI THIS MORNING FOR BICENTENNIAL TOUR

Missouri will be celebrating its Bicentennial this month and Governor Mike Parson is taking a tour of the state.

As a part of the tour, the Governor and First Lady will be making multiple stops today in Southeast Missouri.

The first event is scheduled for 9:45 am at the Dexter Welcome Center Depot and Museum. Following that, the Governor will be at the Wayne County Historical Society Museum in Piedmont at 12:45 pm.  

In between those two stops for the Bicentennial Tour, Governor Parson will visit the Boys and Girls Club of Poplar Bluff at 11 am to see the workforce development programs the organization has implemented.

President James Monroe approved statehood and entry into the United States of America for Missouri on August 10th, 1821. Missouri was the 24th state to enter the union. 

WOMAN DROWNS IN ELEVEN POINT RIVER

A Kansas City area woman has drowned in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 55 year old Tammy Owen, of Grandview, Missouri, fell off of a towed floatation device on Eleven Point River, went underwater, and drowned.

Officials say that the incident occurred Friday evening three miles north of the Riverton Access. 

TWO STRUCK BY LIGHTNING IN CARTER COUNTY

Two people were struck by lightning over the weekend in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Carter County Emergency Management Agency, the people were hit shortly after 7 pm Saturday while on an area waterway.

The condition and identities of the victims were not available. 

CARUTHERSVILLE PEDESTRIAN STRUCK AND KILLED BY VEHICLE

A Caruthersville man was struck and killed by a vehicle on Friday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 39 year old Willie Campbell was hit shortly before 8:30 pm Friday while walking on 15th Street at Truman Boulevard in Caruthersville.

Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene the next day by Pemiscot County Coroner Jim Brimhall. 

KENNETT FIRE DESCRIBED AS SUSPICIOUS

Kennett authorities were at the scene of what was described as a suspicious fire over the weekend.

According to the Kennett Fire Department, the blaze occurred downtown Saturday morning and two additional calls came in while crews were on scene.

There were no reported injuries and officials say that the fire was suspicious in nature.

SWELTERING HEAT BLANKETS SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Sweltering heat and humidity blanketed Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas on Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service, peak heat index readings were recorded Thursday at 113 degrees in Northern Carter County, 111 degrees in Piedmont, and 108 degrees in both Poplar Bluff and Doniphan.

Weather officials say that a heat advisory will also be in effect today for much of Southeast Missouri and all of Northeast Arkansas. 

DEXTER HOSPITAL EXPECTED TO REOPEN IN EARLY AUGUST

Repairs are continuing at Southeast Health Center of Stoddard County from the tornado that hit the Dexter area on July 10th.

According to a release from Southeast Health, the hospital is expected to reopen in early August.

Hospital officials say that it is their goal for the Emergency Services and inpatient units to open at the same time to ensure continuity of care.

DATES ANNOUNCED FOR OPEN HOUSE AND ORIENTATIONS IN THE POPLAR BLUFF R-1 SCHOOL DISTRICT

Parents in Poplar Bluff will have the opportunity to learn more about the schools their children will be attending this fall during a series of open houses scheduled for next month.

Open houses will be held for the Kindergarten and 7th grades on Monday, August 16th. The 8th grade orientation will also be held on the 16th at the Junior High.

On Tuesday, August 17th, there will be the 5th and 6th grade Open House at the Middle School. The 4th grade open house has been scheduled for Wednesday, August 18th.

The four elementary schools will be holding their Open Houses on Thursday, August 19th.

The Poplar Bluff High School Open House and freshman orientation is set for Thursday, August 19th.

Early Childhood will hold meet the Teacher visits from August 19th through the 25th.

DEXTER POLICE INVESTIGATING OFF ROAD VEHICLE THEFTS

Authorities in Dexter are investigating the theft of off road vehicles.

According to the Dexter Police Department, multiple off road vehicles were stolen from M2 Outdoors on Wednesday, between 1:50 and 3:30 am.

The suspect vehicle is described as a silver Ford F-150 crew cab which was pulling a bumper pull trailer.

APPLICATIONS FOR MANAGED DEER HUNTS ENDING THIS WEEKEND

The application period for managed deer hunts in Missouri will be ending this weekend.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, deer hunters can apply online through the MDC website through July 31st for a shot at more than 100 managed deer hunts throughout the state this fall and winter.

The deer hunts will be for archery, muzzleloading, crossbow, and modern firearms from mid-September through mid-January. Some of the hunts will be held specifically for youth or for people with disabilities.

Hunters will be selected by a weighted random drawing.

TWO RIPLEY COUNTY ROADS TO BE CLOSED MONDAY FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS

Two Ripley County roads will be closed on Monday for pavement repairs.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route BB will be closed from 7 am to 5 pm between Route 160 and County Road BB-2.

Officials say that Route JJ will also be closed from 8 am to 5 pm between Route 160 and County Road 142E-28.

The work zones will be marked with signs and motorists are urged to use extreme caution when travelling in those areas.

MIKE MOFFITT NAMED NEW POPLAR BLUFF FIRE CHIEF

A new chief has been named for the Poplar Bluff Fire Department.

Poplar Bluff City Manager Matt Winters tells KWOC News that Mike Moffitt has been appointed as PBFD Fire Chief effective August 1st.

Moffitt served as the interim chief in 2020. He was hired as a firefighter in 1996 and was promoted to the role of battalion chief in 2008.

Winters says that Moffitt is respected by the members of the PBFD and by the other department heads within the city.

Moffitt’s pinning service will be held at the beginning of the Poplar Bluff City Council meeting on August 2nd. 

HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT TODAY FOR SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Weather officials have announced that a heat advisory will be in effect today for southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas.

According to the National Weather Service, the heat advisory will be in effect from 10 am to 8 pm. Heat index values are expected to top out between 105 and 110 degrees across the region.

Residents are being reminded to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. 

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN FACING CHARGES IN CONNECTION TO ALLEGED INVOLVEMENT IN ATTACK ON CAPITOL

A Southeast Missouri man is facing multiple charges in connection to the attack on the United States Capitol in January.

According to authorities, 41 year old Nicholas Kennedy, of Sikeston, is facing charges of entering a restricted building, obstruction of an official proceeding, and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in the Capitol Building, among other charges.

Kennedy appeared in federal court Wednesday in Cape Girardeau. 

PUXICO MUNICIPAL COURT TO TRANSFER TO STODDARD COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT

The Puxico Municipal Court is on the move.

According to the Puxico Police Department, the Puxico Municipal Court is being transferred to the Stoddard County Circuit Court in Bloomfield.

Following the transition, all tickets written by the Puxico Police Department will be handled by the Stoddard County Circuit Court. 

TWO ARKANSAS MOTORCYCLE RIDERS INVOLVED IN WRECKS IN RIPLEY COUNTY

Two motorcycle riders from Paragould, Arkansas were involved in wrecks Tuesday night in Ripley County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, motorcycles driven by 33 year old Brandon Adams and 26 year old Elijah Tittle both ran off the side of Missouri Highway 142 in Oxly and overturned.

Both wrecks occurred at around 9:50 pm.

Tittle suffered serious injuries and was flown to a Memphis hospital, while Adams was flown to a Jonesboro hospital with moderate injuries. 

MAN FACING CHARGES FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK NEAR GREENVILLE

A Texas man is facing charges following a single vehicle wreck in Wayne County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 59 year old Robert Dodd, of Garland, Texas, was driving on Route E near Greenville Tuesday afternoon when his vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned.

Dodd suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

According to an arrest report from the Highway Patrol, Dodd is also facing charges of driving while intoxicated and failure to drive on the right side of the roadway causing an accident.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN SENTENCED TO PROBATION AND WILL HAVE TO PAY OVER 87 THOUSAND DOLLARS IN CONNECTION TO PURCHASE AND SALE OF GINSENG

A Poplar Bluff man will have to pay over $80,000 dollars and spend multiple years on probation for a violation of the federal Lacey Act.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 57 year old Thomas Ridenhower admitted to failing to properly record a purchase of ginseng from another person on a quarterly reporting form and that he intended to export the purchased ginseng in interstate and foreign commerce.

Officials say that Ridenhower’s intent to export the ginseng that was not reported on the Missouri Ginseng Quarterly Report was a violation of the federal Lacey Act, which makes it illegal to submit any false record of any plant that is intended to be transported in interstate or foreign commerce.

Ginseng is a plant that is native to Missouri and harvested during a state authorized season for sale and export.

Ridenhower was fined $55,000 and will also have to pay over $32,000 in restitution. He was also sentenced to 5 years probation.

CITY OF POPLAR BLUFF TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING OVER BLOCK GRANT APPLICATION

The city of Poplar Bluff will be holding a public hearing in August to get community feedback on the submission of an application to the Community Development Block Grant Long-Term Recovery program.

The city is requesting funds for a complete replacement of the Roxie Road Bridge located at Roxie Road and Maud Street. The total project cost is estimated at $578,933.

The hearing has been scheduled for Monday, August 2nd at 6:45 pm at the Poplar Bluff City Council Chambers in the Black River Coliseum.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR EARTHQUAKE AWARENESS STUDY IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

Researchers with the University of Missouri Disaster and Community Crisis Center are looking for volunteers in New Madrid County for an earthquake awareness study this week.

Homeowners from the New Madrid area who are 25 years of age or older can participate in the study on perceptions of earthquakes and earthquake insurance.

One hour focus groups will be held on Thursday at 3 pm and 5:30 pm for the study and will involve answering questions about earthquake risk and preparedness. Participants will receive a $20 Walmart gift card.

FREE ATHLETE PHYSICALS SCHEDULED FOR TOMORROW IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff High School and Junior High student athletes can get a free physical done tomorrow at the High School.

Physicals will be conducted beginning at 5:30 pm on Thursday for athletes in the 7th and 8th grades, beginning at 6:30 for 9th and 10th grades, and beginning at 7:30 for 11th and 12th grades.

Poplar Bluff Athletic Director Kent Keith tells us that the first practice day for fall high school sports is set for Monday, August 9th. Junior High sports will follow a week later, on Monday, August 16th.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SET FOR TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route VV in Stoddard County will be closed over the next couple of days as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.          

The section of Route VV to be closed is located from Route Z to the end of state maintenance.

Weather permitting, work will take place today and tomorrow from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm each day.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN CHARGED WITH SEXUAL ABUSE IN CONNECTION TO INCIDENT AT AREA BUSINESS

A man has been taken into custody on a sexual abuse charge following an alleged incident at an area business.

Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whiteley tells KWOC News that an officer was dispatched to the business on Sunday in connection to a report of an adult male customer inappropriately touching a female employee, who was a juvenile.

A manager at the business pointed out the suspect, identified as 31 year old Donald Raymer, of Poplar Bluff, who was immediately apprehended.

Whiteley says that after reviewing body camera footage, video from the business, and discussing the facts of the case with the officer, Butler County Prosecuting Attorney Kacey Proctor decided on the charge of sexual abuse in the 1st degree.

A warrant was issued on Raymer for a parole violation with no bond, as well as a warrant for sexual abuse in the 1st degree with a bond of $100,000, cash or surety.

He was lodged in the Butler County Jail. 

POPLAR BLUFF RESIDENT GRADUATES FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY

A Poplar Bluff man was one of 29 people to graduate from the Missouri State Highway Patrol Law Enforcement Academy last week.

Elijah Stinson, of Poplar Bluff, graduated from the 25 week long Academy on Friday and will report to duty in Linn and Chariton Counties on August 9th.

Southeast Missouri will be getting four new troopers from the 111th Recruit Class.

In Troop E, Roberto Rodriguez Penaflor, of Senath, was assigned to Stoddard County, while James Williams, of Charleston, and David McKnight, of Sikeston, were assigned to Scott, Mississippi, and New Madrid Counties.

In Troop G, Kenneth Hall, of Ellsinore, was assigned to Carter and Reynolds Counties. 

TWO BOOKED IN STODDARD COUNTY ON DRUG TRAFFICKING CHARGE

Two people were recently taken into custody in Stoddard County on drug trafficking charges.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 42 year old Samuel Below, of Wappapello, and 27 year old Brandy Umfleet, of Cape Girardeau, were each booked on a charge of 1st degree trafficking drugs.

Few details about the arrest were available and officials say that no bond was set for either person. 

EAST CARTER HEAD START ACCEPTING APPOINTMENTS FOR FALL

ALMOST TWO WEEK LONG ROAD PROJECT UNDERWAY IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

An almost two week long road project is underway in New Madrid County.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, contractor crews are making driving surface improvements on Route H.

During the repairs, there will be a 9-foot width restriction on Route H between Route E and Route 61.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 am to 7 pm daily, through Saturday, August 7th.

HEAT INDEX READINGS REACH OVER 110 DEGREES IN PARTS OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI ON SUNDAY

A hot weekend saw heat index reading reach around 110 degrees in parts of Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas. 

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, while many areas had the heat index get into the triple digits during the afternoon on Sunday, the heat index reading in Kennett was recorded at 113 degrees at 2 pm. 

In the Pocahontas area of Northeast Arkansas, the heat index was recorded at 110 degrees. 

According to a Hazardous Weather Outlook, each afternoon this week offers the potential for some of our listening area to experience afternoon heat indices from the upper 90s to near 105.

The outlook says that Thursday looks to be the hottest.

The American Red Cross has released some safety tips for staying safe during the summer heat wave, including staying hydrated and indoors when possible, avoiding strenuous activities, and trying to eat small meals more often. 

Red Cross Heat Wave Safety Tips: 

• Prepare. Discuss heat safety precautions with members of your household. Have a plan for what to do if the power goes out.

• Dress for the heat. Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays. It is also a good idea to wear hats or to use an umbrella.

• Stay hydrated. Carry water or juice with you and drink continuously even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine, which dehydrate the body.

• Eat small meals and eat more often. Avoid high-protein foods, which increase metabolic heat.

• Slow down and avoid strenuous activity. If you must do strenuous activity, do it during the coolest part of the day, which is usually in the morning between 4 and 7 a.m. Take frequent breaks.

• Stay indoors when possible. If air-conditioning is not available, stay on the lowest floor out of the sunshine. Remember that electric fans do not cool, they simply circulate the air.

• Be a good neighbor. During heat waves, check in on family, friends and neighbors who are elderly or ill and those who do not have air conditioning. Check on your animals frequently, too, to make sure they are not suffering from the heat.

• Learn Red Cross first aid and CPR/AED.

WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN BOATING ACCIDENT ON CLEARWATER LAKE

An area woman was injured Friday while boating on Clearwater Lake. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a pontoon boat was approaching a gas dock in Reynolds County when a passenger slipped and was caught between the dock and the vessel.

The passenger, identified as 28 year old Angelia Turner, of Ellington, suffered serious injuries. 

She was flown to a St. Louis hospital. 

TEENAGER FLOWN TO ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING WRECK NEAR DEXTER

A Stoddard County teenager has been flown to a regional hospital following a wreck early Sunday morning. 

According to authorities, 19 year old Dawson Moore, of Bloomfield, was driving on Missouri Highway 25 when his vehicle ran off the roadway and struck a utility pole. 

Moore suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a St. Louis hospital. 

Officials say the wreck occurred a quarter mile south of Dexter shortly after 2:30 am Sunday.

TWO ARRESTED IN RIPLEY COUNTY ON HEROIN AND METH CHARGES

A drug bust in Ripley County led to the arrest of two people over the weekend.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 38 year old Alfred Queen, of Doniphan, and 37 year old Maggie Flannigan, of Fairdealing, were each taken into custody Sunday afternoon on felony charges of possession of heroin and possession of methamphetamine. 

They are also each facing charges of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana. 

VINE STREET REOPENED IN POPLAR BLUFF

Crews in Poplar Bluff have reopened an area road following an over two week closure. 

The Poplar Bluff Street Department announced on Friday that Vine Street has reopened. 

The street had been closed near Westwood Boulevard since July 7th so that crews could replace both lanes of the old concrete. 

CULVERT REPLACEMENT CAUSES CLOSURE OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI ROAD

Route A in Pemiscot County will be closed beginning today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace culverts under the roadway.

MoDOT officials tell us that the work zone is located from Route 412 to Route EE.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday, August 5th from 6 am to 4:30 pm, daily.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES

Authorities in Poplar Bluff have arrested an area man on child pornography charges.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, 40 year old Joshua Thomas was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon following an investigation by the SEMO Cyber Crimes Task Force.

Officials say that a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children led to the execution of a search warrant last week at an address on Thomas Street.

Numerous electronic devices were seized during the search. Child pornography was confirmed during an examination of the devices.

Thomas has been officially charged with six counts of class b felony possession of child pornography and one count of class d felony possession of child pornography.

He is being held in the Butler County Jail on a bond of $100,000 cash only. 

DANGEROUS HEAT EXPECTED FOR THIS WEEKEND

High temperatures and humidity means we could be looking at some dangerous heat conditions for this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, Southeast Missouri is expected to get high temperatures in the low to mid 90’s with very high humidity on Saturday and Sunday.

Heat Index values are expected to top out from around 102 degrees to 107 degrees across Southeast Missouri this weekend.  

Residents are being reminded to take steps to counter the heat, including drinking plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. If you have to be outside, wear loose fitting and light colored clothing.

TWO INJURED, ONE FACING CHARGES, FOLLOWING EARLY MORNING WRECK IN BUTLER COUNTY

Two people were injured in an early Thursday morning wreck in Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 39 year old Matthew Cowin, of Ellsinore, was driving on Old US Highway 67, near Harviell, when his vehicle ran off the road and struck a sign and debris.

Cowin suffered moderate injuries while a passenger in the vehicle received serious injuries. They were both transported to area hospitals.

According to an arrest report from the Highway Patrol, Cowin was arrested later Thursday morning on a felony charge of driving while intoxicated – serious physical injury as well as a charge of careless and imprudent driving resulting in an accident.  

MALDEN MAN CONVICTED FOR DISTRIBUTION OF METHAMPHETAMINE IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A Malden man has been convicted on a methamphetamine charge.

Officials with the United States Attorney’s Office tell KWOC News that 36 year old Marcrease Farmer has been found guilty of distribution of methamphetamine following a two day jury trial.

Farmer reportedly sold methamphetamine to an undercover officer from the Missouri State Highway Patrol on three occasions in August of 2019.

Farmer’s sentencing has been scheduled for October 18th. Officials say he faces a minimum sentence of five years incarceration, up to a maximum sentence of forty years of imprisonment.

ALMOST MONTH LONG PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT UNDERWAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

An almost one month long pavement repair project is underway in Butler County.

According to officials, Route KK in Butler County is being reduced with a 9-foot width restriction between Route W and Route T so contractor crews can perform the repairs.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 am to 5:30 pm daily through Monday, August 16th.

SURFACE IMPROVEMENTS SCHEDULED FOR THE NEXT WEEK IN STODDARD COUNTY

Contractor crews will be making driving surface improvements over the next week on Route E in Stoddard County.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the work zone is located between Route 25 and Route N.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 am to 7 pm daily through Saturday, July 31.

NEW COVID 19 CASES CONTINUE TO INCREASE IN BUTLER COUNTY

Butler County is seeing a rapid increase in new COVID-19 cases.

According to the Butler County Health Department, there are 134 new COVID-19 cases in the county, bringing the total active cases to 154.

The amount of new cases in the county has been rising over the past few weeks. Two weeks ago, there were 43 new cases reported, with the number going up to 90 new cases last week. 

MISSOURI VACCINE INCENTIVE PROGRAM TO GIVE CHANCE OF $10,000 TO RESIDENTS WHO ARE VACCINATED

Missouri is offering people a chance to win $10,000 to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

The state will award $10,000 to 900 lottery winners through the program. Teenagers will get $10,000 scholarships. All vaccinated adults and teenagers are eligible. For more information, go to MOStopsCovid.com/win.

The state is also giving local health departments the chance to offer $25 to anyone who gets a vaccine moving forward.

The programs are aimed at increasing vaccinations in Missouri, which lags about 10 percentage points behind the national average for people who have initiated shots.

MALDEN MAN FACING 10 YEARS IN PRISON ON FIREARM CHARGE

A Dunklin County man is facing 10 years in prison after his conviction on a firearm charge.

According to the Office of the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri, on March 8th officers with the Malden Police Department responded to a “shots-fired” call on Blades Drive. Two people reported that 38 year old Kendrick Calloway, of Malden, knocked on their car window as he was holding a gun.

Words were exchanged and Calloway fired a shot. The victims drove off and Calloway followed them in his car and fired additional shots at them.

After officers made contact with Calloway, he was noncompliant and attempted to bite an officer. Officials say that Calloway had a fully loaded semi-automatic pistol in the waistband of his pants. Another semi-automatic pistol was found in his car.

Calloway was a convicted felon and therefore it was unlawful for him to possess firearms.

Calloway pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and was sentenced to the statutory maximum sentence of 10 years. 

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON GUN AND DRUG CHARGES IN BUTLER COUNTY

Authorities in Butler County have arrested a Poplar Bluff man on multiple felony charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 33 year old John Gray was taken into custody Wednesday morning on felony charges of unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Gray also reportedly had felony warrants out of Butler and Wayne Counties.

Following the arrest, he was held at the Butler County Jail.

CLOSURE OF STODDARD AND NEW MADRID COUNTY ROADS TO BEGIN TODAY

Route JJ in New Madrid and Stoddard Counties will be closed beginning today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway to be closed is located from Route D in New Madrid County to the end of state maintenance in Stoddard County.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm daily through Tuesday, July 27th.

NEW MADRID COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED FOR A WEEK

Route AB in New Madrid County will be closed over the next week while Missouri Department of Transportation crews cut brush and trim trees.

According to officials, the closure is located from Route WW to the end of state maintenance.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 am to 3:30 pm daily, through Thursday, July 29.

TEENAGER SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WRECK NEAR ELLINGTON

An Ellington teenager was injured Monday evening in a Reynolds County wreck.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 16 year old female was driving on Old Missouri Highway 21 when she swerved to miss a deer, causing her vehicle to run off the roadway and strike a tree.

The teen suffered serious injuries and was transported to a St. Louis Hospital. 

CITY OF POPLAR BLUFF RECOGNIZED FOR SAFE DIGGING PRACTICES

The city of Poplar Bluff recently received an award for safe digging.

The City, along with Street Superintendent Jerry Lawson, were presented with the annual Silver Shovel award during the city council meeting on Monday.

The award is for safe digging practices over the past year. Officials say that Poplar Bluff is one of only three cities in the state to receive the award in two consecutive years. 

TEAMS BEING ACCEPTED FOR 2021 BATTLE ON THE BANK COED SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

Teams are being accepted for the 2021 Battle on the Bank Coed Slow Pitch Softball tournament.

The tournament will be held on August 21st at Riverfront Park in Doniphan. Games will begin at 8 am with a top prize being awarded to the winning team.

The cost is $150 per team. All proceeds will go to the summer park baseball and softball program.

COALITION FOR ROADWAY SAFETY ASKING FOR PUBLIC’S HELP IN GETTING EVERYONE TO BUCKLE UP

The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety is asking for the public’s help in creating a new Public Service Announcement to remind people to buckle up.

Anyone wanting to participate in the contest needs to create a 30-second video PSA that tells others why buckling up and putting their phone down while driving is important.

The winning PSA will be featured at this year’s Buckle Up Phone Down Day celebration in October and will be used in campaigns throughout the state.

ROAD CLOSURE SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

Route 142 in Butler County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert beneath the roadway.

The section of Route 142 to be closed is located between County Road 265 and County Road 341.

Work is scheduled to take place today from 7 am to 4 pm.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO CAUSE CLOSURE OF WAYNE COUNTY ROAD

Route N in Wayne County will be closed today so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform pavement repairs.

According to officials, the work zone is located from Route 34 to the end of state maintenance.

Work is scheduled to take place through 4:30 pm this afternoon.

POPLAR BLUFF INDUSTRIES PURCHASES OVER 50 ACRES OF LAND

Plans are underway for a new industrial park in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Greater Poplar Bluff Area Chamber of Commerce, Poplar Bluff Industries recently made a purchase of a 54 acre tract of land.

The land is located next to Hydro Adventures and will be used for a new industrial park.

Poplar Bluff Industries is the economic development arm of the Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce.   

OZARK BORDER ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE MEETING SET FOR NEXT WEEK

Ozark Border Electric Cooperative will be holding their annual meeting next week.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 am on August 6th. Drive through registration and voting will be from 7 am to 2 pm, followed by the business meeting at 2:30 pm.

WOMAN ARRESTED IN BUTLER COUNTY ON MULTIPLE DRUG RELATED CHARGES

A St. Robert woman was taken into custody Monday in Butler County on multiple drug related charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 36 year old Andrea Gibbons was arrested at around 7:30 am and is facing charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance at a correctional facility.

She also reportedly had a warrant from the Dexter Police Department for stealing.

Officials say that Gibbons was held at the Butler County Jail. 

DRIVE THROUGH SCHOOL READINESS EVENT TO BE HELD IN RIPLEY COUNTY

A drive through school readiness event has been scheduled for this week in Ripley County.

The event will be held at the Current River Shelter Workshop in Doniphan from 9 am to 1 pm on July 23rd.

TWO KILLED, INCLUDING HAYTI TEENAGER, IN WRECK ON INTERSTATE 55

Two teenagers have died following a wreck Saturday on Interstate 55.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle that had been disabled from a previous crash was blocking both lanes of the bridge over Apple Creek in Cape Girardeau County.

Officials say that a vehicle struck the disabled vehicle at around 1:48 am Saturday morning. The impact from the crash caused the disabled vehicle to then strike a pedestrian.

A passenger in the disabled vehicle, 18 year old Shayleigh Smith, of Jackson, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The pedestrian, a 16 year old male from Hayti, was later pronounced dead at a Cape Girardeau hospital. 

TWO PEOPLE RESCUED FROM FLASH FLOODING IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Flood waters resulted in dangerous conditions last week in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, water patrol troopers were involved in the rescue of two individuals from flash flooding on the St. Francis River in Southern Madison County.

Madison County Emergency Management Director Dean Stevens also assisted in the rescue.

The recovery process from the tornado that struck Stoddard County is ongoing,

According to Southeast Health, Southeast Family Medicine of Dexter, located in the Medical Office Building adjacent to the main hospital, has reopened. Officials say that progress is being made in the Emergency Department which they anticipate to reopen this week.

According to the Stoddard County Emergency Management Agency, any homeowners who have recovery needs are recommended to contact the United Way by calling 800-427-4626.

Impacted business owners in the damaged area can contact the Dexter Chamber of Commerce at 573-624-7428, while farm owners should call the Stoddard County Farm Service Agency at 573-624-5939 to seek assistance.

CARTER COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ENCOURAGING RESIDENTS TO GET VACCINATED AMID CASE SPIKE

County officials in Carter County are encouraging their residents to get vaccinated amid a spike in COVID-19 cases.

The Carter County Commission and the Carter County Health Center announced an 1100 percent increase in the Carter County COVID-19 positivity rate. As of July 12th, Carter County residents are testing positive at a rate of 36.7 percent, which is the highest rate in the state.

31 new cases of COVID-19 were reported last week, an all time high of new positive cases since COVID-19 was first detected in the County.

Six county residents are being treated in hospitals for COVID-19, with three being in critical care.

Officials say that over 79 percent of county residents are unvaccinated, which lags behind both the state and national rates.

The Commission is encouraging everyone 12 and older to get vaccinated as soon as possible, including those who have previously tested positive for COVID-19. Citizens are also being asked to limit large gatherings and stay home when they are feeling sick.

OVER FIVE POUNDS OF K2 AND MARIJUANA SEIZED IN KENNETT

A suspect has been taken into custody following a drug bust in Kennett.

According to the Kennett Police Department, on Saturday, officers were dispatched to a residence on Baldwin Street in reference to a domestic incident.

A search warrant was later obtained for the residence, which resulted in officers locating over five pounds of K2 and marijuana.

A 58 year old male, whose name was not released, was taken into custody and is facing charges of possession with intent to distribute, domestic assault – 3rd degree, and endangering the welfare of a child. 

NEW MADRID COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED THROUGH MID OCTOBER

Route W in New Madrid County will be closed through mid-October as contractor crews replace the bridge over drainage ditch 2.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the bridge to be replaced is located between Route E and Route Z.

Weather permitting, work will take place beginning this morning at 8 am, with the road re-opening at 6 am on Thursday, October 14th.

POPLAR BLUFF AIRPORT RESUMES NORMAL OPERATIONS

Things are getting back to normal at the Poplar Bluff Airport.

The Poplar Bluff Regional Business Airport has announced that it resumed normal operations late Thursday night.

Pilots are being instructed to refer to the Notices to Airmen for specific limitations at the airport. 

MISSOURI COVID-19 CASES AT HIGHEST LEVEL SINCE JANUARY

Missouri’s health department is reporting the highest daily count of new COVID-19 cases since the dead of winter, and the association representing the state’s hospital has warned that the health care system is potentially on the brink of a crisis.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services cited 2,302 newly confirmed cases of the virus on Thursday, the largest one-day count since mid-January, as the delta variant continues to spread in a state with one of the nation’s lowest vaccination rates.

The Missouri Hospital Association, in its weekly COVID-19 update, calls the situation in southwestern Missouri “dire” and says signals for the rest of Missouri are “foreboding.”

13TH ANNUAL MULE SKINNER GOLF TOURNAMENT SET FOR AUGUST

The 13th Annual Mule Skinner Golf Tournament is coming up in August.

The 4 person scramble tournament will be held on Friday, August 13th at the Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff. Check in time is 11:30 am with a shotgun start at 1 pm.

Organizers say the entry fee is $600 per team, which includes a cart and lunch. Hole sponsorships are available for $100 per hole.

All proceeds will go to benefit Poplar Bluff Mules athletics programs.

PUXICO FIRE DEPARTMENT HOSTING WEEKEND FISH FRY

The Puxico Fire Department is hosting a Fish Fry this weekend.

The event has been scheduled for this Saturday from 11 am to 6 pm.

Plates will be available for eight dollars and include fried fish, french fries, cole slaw, and tartar sauce.

The fish fry will be held at the old Fire Station next to City Hall.

OVERNIGHT STRIPING TO BEGIN THIS WEEKEND IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI CITIES

Overnight striping operations are set to begin this weekend in multiple southeast Missouri cities.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Striping crews will be restriping state routes in Poplar Bluff, Sikeston, Dexter, Cape Girardeau, and Jackson.

To help reduce the impact to traffic, striping will take place overnight from 7 pm to 7 am. Weather permitting, striping operations will begin July 18th, with completion anticipated in approximately three weeks.
