THREE INJURED IN POPLAR BLUFF SHOOTING
Three people have been injured following a shooting in Poplar Bluff.
Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whiteley tells KWOC News that the shooting occurred at approximately 6:30 pm Tuesday night, on the north end of the Mini Park near Alice and Garfield Street.
The victims were transported to an area hospital with at least one in serious condition. The other two victims sustained non-life threatening injuries. No information was available on any possible suspects.

GOVERNOR PARSON TO END ALL FEDERAL PANDEMIC RELATED UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS
Missouri Governor Mike Parson has announced that the state will end participation in all federal pandemic-related unemployment insurance programs effective June 12th.
Parson cited labor shortages across the state as the reason that he was ending the benefits.
The termination applies to six programs including, Pandemic Unemployment Assistance; Emergency Unemployment Relief for Government Entities and Nonprofit Organizations; Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation; Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation; 100 Percent Reimbursement of Short-Time Compensation Benefit Costs Paid Under State Law; and Mixed Earner Unemployment Compensation.
At least four other states are also ending the $300 federal benefit, Arkansas, Mississippi, Montana and South Carolina.
ONE DEAD, ANOTHER IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING WRECK IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
One person is dead and another is in custody following a wreck Tuesday afternoon in Scott County.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that a vehicle driven by 20 year old Karmillia Smith, of Sikeston, struck another vehicle on Interstate 55 at around 1:45 pm Tuesday.
The second vehicle travelled off the side of the road and overturned. The driver of the second vehicle, 30 year old Cadarious Buckner, of Sikeston, was pronounced dead at the scene by Scott County Coroner Scott Branum.
Smith was arrested later Tuesday afternoon on a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in a death along with a charge of failing to drive on the right half side of the roadway resulting in a crash.
She was held at the Scott County Jail.
MAN ARRESTED IN WAYNE COUNTY ON BUTLER COUNTY WARRANT
An area man who had a warrant out of Butler County has been taken into custody.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC news that 36 year old Kevin Nunnery, of Greenville, was arrested Monday night in Wayne County on a Butler County Sheriff’s Office Warrant for Failure to Appear.
He is also facing felony charges of tampering with a motor vehicle and possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.
Following the arrest, Nunnery was held at the Wayne County Jail.
EUGENE FIELD TEACHER IS POPLAR BLUFF R-1 TEACHER OF THE YEAR
A teacher for Eugene Field Elementary was honored last week as the Poplar Bluff R-1 Teacher of the year.
Special Education Teacher Cathy Burnett was chosen for the honor, as well as the Elementary Grade-Span and Eugene Field Teacher of the Year.
Other teachers honored at the Teacher of the Year Luncheon last week included Brandon Moon, Mary Barousse, Christine East, Staci Barker, Leslie Riefle, Kristi Sittig, Christina Spencer, Pamela Davis, Laura Powell, and Michelle Caswell.
MATTHEWS MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES
A Matthews man is facing multiple felony charges following his arrest earlier this week.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 32 year old Zachary Vandever was taken into custody in New Madrid County shortly before 8 pm Monday on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Vandever is also reportedly facing charges of possession of marijuana and speeding.

MAN FLOWN FROM SCENE OF DUNKLIN COUNTY WRECK
A Senath man was flown from the scene of a wreck Sunday night in Dunklin County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 44 year old Michael Weldon was driving on Highway P, east of Senath, when his vehicle travelled off the side of the roadway and struck a pole.
Weldon suffered moderate injuries and was flown to a Memphis hospital.

OVER THIRTY FOUR THOUSAND TURKEYS HARVESTED IN MISSOURI DURING TURKEY SEASON
Missouri’s spring turkey season has come to an end and state officials say that numbers were down this year.
According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, preliminary data shows that turkey hunters checked 31,798 birds during the spring turkey season, from April 19th through May 9th.
Young turkey hunters also harvested 2,795 birds over the youth weekend in April bringing the overall 2021 spring turkey harvest to 34,593.
Last year, the total spring harvest was 41,458 birds.
Counties in Southeast Missouri occupied five of the bottom seven spots for total turkeys harvested this year. With Dunklin, Pemiscot, and New Madrid being the bottom three.

RED CROSS SAYS THAT THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASED NUMBER OF HOME FIRES THIS YEAR
Fire officials in Missouri and Arkansas have responded to more fires this year than the previous year.
According to the Southeast Missouri Chapter of the Red Cross, from January to March of this year, the Missouri and Arkansas Region responded to more than 1,100 home fires, affecting close to 4,000 people, which is an increase of over 230 fires than the same time last year.
This spring, Red Cross volunteers and community partners are working together through a national Sound the Alarm effort to educate 100,000 people in at-risk communities about home fire safety. To learn more about the program, visit SoundTheAlarm.org.
STODDARD AND DUNKLIN COUNTY ROAD TO BE REDUCED TODAY
Route MM in Stoddard and Dunklin Counties will be reduced today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform pavement repairs.
The section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route U in Stoddard County to County Road 102 in Dunklin County.
Weather permitting, work will take place today from 8 am to 4 pm.

WANTED FUGITIVE ARRESTED IN FISK
A wanted fugitive was taken into custody last week in Southeast Missouri.
Officials with the Dexter Police Department tell KWOC News that they were working a joint operation on Thursday with the U.S. Marshals Service and A.T.F. to locate Michael Ryan of Fisk.
Ryan was located inside a vehicle in Dexter and fled from officers when they attempted to make a traffic stop. A motor vehicle pursuit ensued and traveled throughout portions of rural Stoddard County.

Officials say Ryan is being held on a Stoddard County warrant for possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, unlawful use of a weapon, and stealing as well as a federal U.S. Marshall’s detainer warrant for felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
THREE RIVERS COLLEGE SOFTBALL CROWNED REGION 16 CHAMPIONS
The Three Rivers College Lady Raiders softball team is only two wins away from a trip to the NJCAA World Series.
The Lady Raiders defeated Crowder College on Saturday 4-1 to win the Region 16 championship. Three Rivers advances to the District final where they will play the winner of Region 11 in a three game series.
The District final is scheduled to begin on May 16th.
GAS LEAK CAUSES TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF PORTAGEVILLE ROAD
Two Portageville roads were temporarily closed last week due to a leak.
According to the Portageville Police Department, Main Street and King Avenue were closed for a period of time Friday because of a gas main leak.
Emergency crews responded to the area and the streets were later reopened to drivers.
NEELYVILLE WOMAN ARRESTED ON FELONY CHARGE IN BUTLER COUNTY
Authorities in Butler County have arrested an area woman on a felony charge.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 29 year old Shekenna Liau was taken into custody Friday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance for methamphetamine. Liau also reportedly had a felony warrant out of Butler County.
Following the arrest, she was held at the Butler County Jail.
MAY IS MOTORCYCLE SAFETY AWARENESS MONTH
Over 150 people were injured last year in crashes involving motorcycles and state officials are urging motorcycle riders to take steps to remain safe.
May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and the Missouri State Highway Patrol says that motorcycle riders should dress for safety. This includes wearing a helmet and eye protection, as well as thick, bright clothing.
Riders should also make themselves as visible as possible, including keeping your headlight on, day or night and using reflective strips or decals on your clothing and on your motorcycle.
Officials say that preliminary 2020 statistics indicate there were 173 crashes in Missouri involving a motorcycle. In these crashes, 157 people were injured and 11 people were killed.
STODDARD COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED THIS WEEK FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS
A Stoddard County Road will be closed this week for pavement repairs.
Route NN in Stoddard County will be closed from 7 am to 4:30 pm daily through Thursday as Missouri Department of Transportation crews overlay the roadway.
The work zone will be located from Route FF to County Road 570 and the route will be open to local traffic only.

FISK WOMAN KILLED IN TWO VEHICLE WRECK
A Thursday morning wreck in Butler County resulted in fatal injuries for a Fisk woman.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 54 year old Amanda LeGrand pulled into the path of a freightliner on Route B shortly before 6:30 am on Thursday.

MAN CHARGED WITH 2ND DEGREE MURDER AFTER ALLEGEDLY HITTING ANOTHER MAN WITH A VEHICLE
A Kennett man is facing a murder charge following an incident on Wednesday.
According to authorities, 51 year old Jimmy Gooden Jr. is in custody on charges of second degree murder, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in a death, and armed criminal action.
Gooden is alleged to have hit Forest Kincade with a vehicle following an argument.
DEXTER MAN ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT AND TERRORIST THREAT CHARGES
A Dexter man has been arrested on multiple charges in Stoddard County.
Few details about the incident have been released, but according to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 62 year old Michael Racca was recently arrested for 2nd degree assault and 1st degree terrorist threat.
Racca was held in custody on no bond.
MISSOURI NATIONAL GUARD TO SCALE BACK VACCINE SUPPORT
The Missouri National Guard will be scaling back their involvement in vaccinating the public against Covid-19 this month.
According to Governor Mike Parson, the drawdown of National Guard members' involvement at mass vaccination site locations is set to be completed by June 1st.
State-supported vaccination teams have conducted hundreds of vaccine clinics and administered more than 382,000 vaccines, representing nearly 10 percent of total vaccines administered across Missouri.
Parson says that recently the teams and other vaccinators have experienced sharp reductions in COVID-19 vaccine demand.
WATER MAIN BREAK IN BERNIE PROMPTS BOIL WATER ADVISORY
Some Stoddard County residents are being advised to boil their water due to a water main break.
Officials say that the Stoddard County Public Water Supply District #7 is under a boil water advisory until further notice.
The advisory is due to a water main break in the city of Bernie.
FULL DAY OF EVENTS SCHEDULED FOR WAPPAPELLO LAKE’S 80TH ANNIVERSARY
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is planning for a full day of events to celebrate the 80th Anniversary for Wappapello Lake.
The Anniversary is being celebrated along with Armed Forces Day from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday, May 15th at the Redman Creek Recreation Area.
There will be a car cruise-in, live music, military displays, and booths from area businesses and organizations.

BUNKER MAN FLOWN TO ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL AFTER LOG TRUCK OVERTURNS
A log truck overturned Wednesday morning in Southeast Missouri resulting in injuries for the driver.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 70 year old Michael Hatcher was driving the truck on Route HH near Ellington when the vehicle ran off the side of the roadway and overturned.

SURVEY FINDS EVIDENCE OF TORNADOS TUESDAY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS
Survey teams with the National Weather Service have found evidence of Tornados being involved in the storm system that crossed Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas early Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, preliminary damage survey results showed EF-0 tornadoes in Pemiscot and Greene Counties.
The Greene County tornado was north of Oak Grove heights and had estimated peak winds of 80 miles per hour and a max width of 100 yards.
The tornado in Pemiscot County was located north east of Hayti Heights and had estimated peak winds of 85 miles per hour with a max width of 90 yards.
No injuries or deaths were reported from either tornado.
GRENADES DETONATED BY AUTHORITIES IN POPLAR BLUFF
Two grenades were detonated by authorities in Poplar Bluff on Wednesday.
According to Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whiteley, the grenades were found separately in Poplar Bluff this week.
They were detonated by the Southeast Missouri Bomb Squad.
STATE WORKERS TO RETURN TO OFFICES THIS MONTH
Missouri Governor Mike Parson has directed all state employees to return to the office by May 17, after many spent most of the past 14 months working remotely.
Parson’s order applies to roughly a third of state employees who as of Wednesday weren't working exclusively on site. The order also requires that all state buildings be open to the public during normal business hours.
The governor cited the decreasing number of cases and the availability of the vaccine. His office says COVID-19 screening and testing protocols will remain in place and the state is encouraging all employees to consider vaccinations.
ARKANSAS WOMAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGE IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
Authorities in the Missouri bootheel have arrested an Arkansas woman on drug related charges.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 33 year old Elizabeth Morgan, of Paragould, was taken into custody Wednesday morning on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.
Morgan is also facing a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
Following the arrest, she was transported to the Dunklin County Jail.
BACK THE BLUE EVENT SCHEDULED FOR THIS MONTH IN POPLAR BLUFF
A Back the Blue event has been scheduled for this month in Poplar Bluff to benefit the Shop with a Hero program.
Officials with the Poplar Bluff Police and Fire Departments, the Butler County Sheriff’s Department, Butler County EMS, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol will be at River Radio on Friday, May 21st from 10 am to 2 pm.
Food for the event will be provided by Buffalo Wild Wings.

MASS CASUALTY TRAINING EVENT TO BE HELD TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF
Three Rivers College students will get hands on training today during the biannual mass casualty training event.
The training event, which helps prepare students in participating programs for a mass casualty emergency such as a natural disaster or terrorist attack, will be held today at the Bess Activity Center.

Students from several fields of study will participate in the training, including Nursing, EMT, and Paramedic students. The training will also receive support from area healthcare providers and area emergency services.
Officials are also keeping the type of “disaster” secret so that students have no chance to prepare beforehand.
CITY OF PARMA MAKING PROGRESS ACCORDING TO STATE OFFICIALS
A Southeast Missouri city is making progress, one year after a state audit led to criminal charges against former city officials.
Missouri state auditor Nicole Galloway tells KWOC News that an audit last year discovered more than $115,000 was misappropriated through payroll overpayments and improper payments and purchases.
The audit, which also found that meeting minutes and financial reports were falsified to conceal the misappropriations, led to criminal charges against the former mayor, former city clerk and former water supervisor.
A follow-up report released this week found that the Parma Board of Aldermen had implemented 12 of the audit's 26 recommendations. Those included ensuring that account balances are properly funded and maintained, monitoring and reducing transfers between bank accounts, and ensuring the transfers are legal.
Another 12 of the recommendations are in progress, including working with law enforcement officials on the criminal prosecution.
Galloway says that the follow-up report shows city officials are moving in the right direction to restore the trust of citizens in local government.
DONIPHAN WOMAN ARRESTED ON METH AND WEAPON CHARGES
A Doniphan woman is facing multiple felony charges following her arrest in Ripley County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 48 year old Ruby James was recently arrested on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine.
James is also facing a felony charge of unlawful use of a weapon.
SECOND GRADERS IN POPLAR BLUFF WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE BOOKS
Students at a Poplar Bluff elementary school have joined together to create non-fiction books.
According to Poplar Bluff School officials, “The Amazing Things About Flowers” was written by Kinsley Huffman, and illustrated by Norah Mattison and Elizabeth Brannum, while “SOLID: Facts About Crystals” was written by Makenna Baucom, and illustrated by Amelia Rousan and Brayden Conover.
The students are all second graders at O’Neal Elementary School. Their teacher, Shannon Miller, says that some of the students shared their work with school librarian Ashley Robertson, who is reviewing options to publish the book or otherwise have it laminated to include on the shelves.
BODY ARMOR DONATED TO NORTHEAST ARKANSAS K9 OFFICER
A K-9 officer in Northeast Arkansas has been donated some new body armor.
The Paragould Police Department’s K9 Koda will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.
Police officials say the vest is expected to be delivered within eight to ten weeks.
STODDARD COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENT
Route MM in Stoddard County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.
According to MoDOT officials, the section of roadway to be closed is located between Route U and County Road 684.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 am to 3 pm.

KENNETT POLICE SEARCHING FOR VEHICLE IN POSSIBLE HIT AND RUN
Authorities in Kennett are asking for the public’s help in finding a vehicle that was involved in a possible hit and run.
According to the Kennett Police Department, a white Dodge Ram 1500 or 2500 was possibly involved in a hit and run accident Saturday night near the Delta Fair Grounds.
The truck will have damage to its right front bumper and/or fender and a picture of the vehicle is available on our Facebook page.

MAN ARRESTED IN ON TRAFFICKING CHARGE IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS
A man is facing a trafficking charge out of Northeast Arkansas.
According to authorities, Richard Hall, II, of Roland, Arkansas was arrested on a Saline County warrant last week in Pocahontas.
During the arrest, police searched Hall’s vehicle and found over $28,000 in cash as well as possible crack cocaine, LSD, and ecstasy.
Hall has been charged with trafficking a controlled substance as well as multiple other offenses.
His bond was set at $250,000, cash only.
WAPPAPELLO LAKE KIDS TO PARKS DAY SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND
The 2021 Kids to Parks day at Wappapello Lake is scheduled for this weekend.
Officials say the free event will be held from 9 am to noon on Saturday at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitor Center.
There will be a variety of games and activities including an obstacle course, scavenger hunts, nature painting, and more.

TRAFFIC LIGHT AT 5TH AND VINE STREET IN POPLAR BLUFF TO BE REMOVED
A traffic light is set to be removed in Poplar Bluff.
According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, the flashing red lights at 5th and Vine Street have been permanently turned off and stop signs have been placed at the intersection.
The traffic lights are going to be removed, although no time table was given for when it would happen.
LILBOURN WOMAN ARRESTED ON METH AND PARAPHERNALIA CHARGES
Authorities in Southeast Missouri have arrested an area woman on a felony drug charge.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 39 year old Lachrisha Little, of Lilbourn, was arrested Monday night on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.
Little is also facing a charge of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Following the arrest, she was taken to the New Madrid County Jail.
MULTIPLE POPLAR BLUFF CAMPUSES NAMED NATIONAL SHOWCASE SCHOOLS
Multiple campuses of the Poplar Bluff School District have been recognized by the Capturing Kids’ Hearts Initiative.
School officials tell KWOC News that Lake Road, O’Neal and the Kindergarten Center received the National Showcase School designation from the professional development organization, which trains over 37,000 educators annually.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE TONIGHT IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
Severe weather is possible tonight in Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas.
According to a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by the National Weather Service, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected tonight. Severe storms will be possible throughout the region mainly in the afternoon and early evening hours, but the threat will be greatest in southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas.

DEXTER POLICE TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER CAMPAIGN
The Dexter Police will be participating in a nationwide drunk driving camping.
Captain Joshua Benton tells KWOC News that Dexter police will be out in full force through May 9th as part of the annual nationwide youth alcohol enforcement crackdown on substance–impaired driving.
Benton says officers will be aggressively looking for substance–impaired drivers during the crackdown and will arrest anyone caught driving impaired by alcohol and/or drugs.
CHRISTIAN SOCCER CAMP TO BE HELD AT BLACK RIVER SOCCER COMPLEX LATER THIS MONTH
First United Methodist Church is sponsoring a Christian Soccer Camp later this month at the Black River Soccer Complex.
The camp is for students from kindergarten to high school and no experience is necessary. The registration fee is $60 and the camp will be held over three days from May 28th to May 30th.
Each participant will receive a shirt, water bottle, and soccer ball. Lunch will also be provided daily.

DEXTER WOMAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGE IN STODDARD COUNTY
Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested a Dexter woman on multiple felony charges.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 34 year old Alexis Lee was taken into custody shortly after midnight Saturday on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and felony possession of marijuana.
Lee is also facing charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.
Following her arrest, she was taken to the Stoddard County Jail.
AREA MAN INJURED IN RIPLEY COUNTY WRECK OVER THE WEEKEND
One person was flown to an area hospital following a wreck Saturday morning in Ripley County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 34 year old Daniel Reynolds, of Doniphan, was driving a vehicle that was travelling northbound in the southbound lane, and struck another vehicle head on. The incident occurred on Highway 21, 10 miles north of Doniphan.
Reynolds suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital. No injuries were listed for the driver of the second vehicle.
BASKETBALL AND SOCCER PLAYERS NAMED MARCH ATHLETES OF THE MONTH
A basketball and soccer player were chosen as Poplar Bluff High School athletes of the month for March.
Joseph Hardimon and Olivia Carda were named for the award by the Mules Booster Club.
Hardimon made All-District and All-Conference. He also led the team in points per game and had a 60 percent free throw average. He averaged over 15 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists per game.
Carda earned 10 goals and three assists this season, making her the leading goal scorer so far this season. She maintains a 10.286 GPA in the classroom.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO FORCE CLOSURE OF STODDARD COUNTY ROAD TODAY
Route K in Stoddard County will be closed through Thursday so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform pavement repairs.
The section of roadway to be closed is located between Route 25 and Route BB.
Weather permitting, work is scheduled to take place today and tomorrow from 7 am to 5 pm, both days.
21ST ANNUAL POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL FOUNDATION GOLF TOURNAMENT SET FOR THIS FRIDAY
The 21st Annual Poplar Bluff School Foundation Golf Tournament is coming up at the end of this week.
The four person scramble tournament is scheduled for Friday, April 30th, at Ozark Ridge Golf Course. Tee time will be at noon.
All proceeds from the event will go toward student scholarships and teacher projects.

MALDEN MAN FACING CHARGES FOLLOWING DEADLY MOTORCYCLE WRECK IN BUTLER COUNTY
A Malden man is facing charges in a crash that caused the death of a Clarkton woman Monday in Butler County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck happened around 8:30 pm Tuesday on Route CC at County Road 660, when a motorcycle driven by 39 year old Derek McCoin, of Malden, ran off the roadway and struck an embankment, causing both occupants to be ejected.
A passenger on the motorcycle, 56 year old Becky Paulson, was killed in the wreck.
The driver has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and driving while intoxicated. He sustained serious injuries in the wreck and was airlifted to a Cape Girardeau hospital.
DRIVERS REMINDED TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR BICYCLES
Warmer weather brings with it an increase of bicycles on Missouri’s roadways and state officials are asking motorists to keep an eye out for them.
Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Transportation shows that eight fatalities reported in 2020 involved a bicycle, with 369 injured.
Bicyclists should take precautions to remain safe while on the road. A bicyclist must be equipped with brakes that will enable its driver to stop the bicycle 25 feet from a speed of 10 mph on dry, level, clean pavement.
Experts also recommend bicyclists obey the law and keep safety in mind. Reviewing bicycle safety guiltiness and traffic laws are a great way to prepare for bicycling season. For more safety tips go online to www.mshp.org.
REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY ON INTERSTATE 55
Southbound Interstate 55 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane with a 16-foot width restriction today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.
The section of roadway to be reduced is located from mile marker 53 to mile marker 50.
Work is scheduled to take place today through 5 pm.

ENDANGERED SILVER ADVISORY CANCELLED AFTER MISSING MAN FOUND SAFE
Continuing to follow a story we brought you yesterday, an Endangered Silver advisory is over after a missing man was found safe.
The advisory had been issued by the Caruthersville Police Department for 85 year old Ray Treece, who had been missing since Sunday.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Treece was located safe in Tennessee, however no further information was available.

An area man was taken into custody Sunday morning on a felony drug charge.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 27 year old Jayson Aycock, of East Prairie, was arrested at approximately 10 pm in Mississippi County on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance for methamphetamine.
He is also facing charges of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Following the arrest, Aycock was held at the Mississippi County Jail.
ROADWORK SET FOR THIS WEEK IN NEW MADRID COUNTY
US Route 61 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction as the Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.
According to MoDOT, this section of roadway to be reduced is located from County Road 634 to County Road 728.
Weather permitting, work will take place today from 6 am to 5 pm.
ONE KILLED IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS HEAD ON COLLISION
A Paragould man was killed in a head on collision Saturday morning in Clay County.
According to the Arkansas State Police, 38 year old Anthony Johnson was driving on State Highway 135 when his vehicle crossed the centerline and into the path of a freightliner.
Officials say that Johnson was killed in the wreck. No injuries were released for the driver of the freightliner.
MOTORISTS ASKED TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR MOWERS
Missouri motorists are asked to be careful when approaching mowers along Missouri’s highways.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, major and minor routes will be mowed in three cycles through September. On rural two-lane roads, crews may use a protective "follow" truck to alert motorists they are approaching slow-moving mowers.
Motorists are asked to be alert for trucks and tractors with lights flashing and moving slowly, around 2 to 5 mph. When you approach one of these vehicles, slow down and focus on the road ahead of you.
Also, be prepared to stop or drive very slowly behind a "follow" truck, especially approaching a hill or curve on a two-lane road.
AREA MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN SHANNON COUNTY WRECK
An area man was injured Monday morning in a single vehicle wreck in Southeast Missouri.
According to authorities, 20 year old Lane Roderman, of Ellington, was driving on County Road 235, 10 miles south of Bunker, when his vehicle ran off the right side of the road and struck several trees.
Roderman suffered moderate injuries in the wreck and was transported to an area hospital.

A Southeast Missouri man has died from injuries he received in a Carter County wreck.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 46 year old Jason Komrska, of Van Buren, was driving on Route C near Eastwood Saturday night when his vehicle ran off the road and struck a tree.

BOLLINGER COUNTY MAN FACING 1ST DEGREE MURDER CHARGE
Officials in Bollinger County say that a man is facing a 1st degree murder charge after human remains were discovered last week.
According to the Bollinger County Sheriff’s Office, a warrant was issued for Kyle Byington’s arrest on Friday for charges of Murder 1st Degree and Abandonment of a Corpse.
Officials say that during a search of Byington’s residence and property, human remains were located in a shallow grave. During an autopsy, the human remains were identified as Jennifer Porzeinski, who had been reported missing in Madison County in March.
Sheriff Casey Graham says that Byington remains in custody at the Bollinger County Jail on no bond.
ONE DEAD AFTER VEHICLE STRIKES PEDESTRIAN IN BUTLER COUNTY
A pedestrian has died after getting struck by a vehicle in Butler County.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the incident occurred Sunday night on Missouri Highway 51, four miles north of Broseley.
36 year old, Melissa Mayo, of Poplar Bluff, was pronounced dead at the scene. No injuries were reported for the driver of the vehicle.
ENDANGERED SILVER ADVISORY ISSUED FOR MISSING CARUTHERSVILLE MAN
An Endangered Silver Advisory has been issued for a missing Caruthersville man.
According to the Caruthersville Police Department, 85 year old Ray Treece left his residence Sunday night en route to Pemiscot Memorial Hospital in Hayti, but never arrived.
Treece reportedly has early stages of dementia and has a history of getting lost while driving.
He may be driving a Gray 2018 Ford Edge with a Missouri license of 5HJ04 and was last seen westbound on Route U from Caruthersville.
Treece is described as a white male, 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 180 pounds, with white hair, and blue eyes. He may be wearing a short sleeve blue and white checkered button-up shirt, blue jeans, and white Nike tennis shoes.

LADY RAIDERS FALL IN NATIONAL SEMI-FINAL
The Three Rivers College Lady Raiders quest for a National Championship has come to an end.
The Lady Raiders were eliminated Friday in the NJCAA Women’s Basketball Championship Semi-final, following their 71-63 loss to Northwest Florida State. The Lady Raiders finished the season with a 24-1 record.
They were welcomed home on Sunday by a crowd of family, friends, and fans at the Three Rivers College campus.
POPLAR BLUFF ANIMAL CONTROL INVESTIGATING ANIMAL ABUSE INCIDENT
Authorities in Poplar Bluff are investigating an animal abuse incident.
According to Poplar Bluff Animal Control, a dog was recently left chained to a tree. Officials say that someone had shot at the dog with an arrow, striking it along the face and through the ear.

CHARGES PENDING ON TWO PEOPLE IN WAYNE COUNTY FOLLOWING VEHICLE SEARCH
Charges are pending against two people in Wayne County following an early morning traffic stop.
Wayne County Sheriff Dean Finch tells KWOC News that on Thursday, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Highway 67 near Greenville.
During the stop, deputies conducted a search of the vehicle and located 16 grams of methamphetamine along with marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Finch says that William McKinney and Stephanie Polk were taken into custody and booked at the Wayne County Jail.

The Mass clinic will be held from 9 am to 2 pm today at the Elks Lodge, north of Poplar Bluff off US Highway 67.

METHAMPHETAMINE FOUND IN WAYNE COUNTY RESIDENCE
Multiple drugs were found earlier this week during the search of a Wayne County residence.
According to authorities, on Monday Wayne County deputies responded to an area residence in search of a wanted person.
At the residence, Derek Ousely was located and taken into custody on an active warrant for Unlawful Use of a Weapon.
While searching the residence, deputies found methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Officials say that David Johnson was also taken into custody following the search. Both Ousely and Johnson were booked at the Wayne County Jail.
PBHS FFA SPRING GREENHOUSE SALE SET FOR NEXT WEEK
It’s almost time for the annual spring greenhouse sale in Poplar Bluff.
The Poplar Bluff High School FFA chapter has over 1,000 plants cultivated for the fundraiser, with numerous types available.
Customers may stop by the greenhouse behind the High School from 8 am to 2:15 pm April 26th through the 30th.
Proceeds from the annual plant sale go toward travel expenses for Poplar Bluff FFA field trips and competitions.
FUNDRAISER FOR THE REESE AINLEY FOUNDATION SET FOR THIS WEEKEND
A fundraiser will be held this weekend for the Reese Ainley Foundation.
The 1st Annual Reesefest has been scheduled for noon on Saturday at the Naylor City Park.
There will be multiple attractions, including a petting zoo, car show, beauty pageant, and silent auction.
All proceeds will go to benefit the Reese Ainley Foundation which will give back to the community in various ways including scholarships.

WOMAN CHARGED WITH INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER IN CONNECTION TO DEATH OF A TODDLER
A Bloomfield woman is in custody in connection to the death of a toddler.
Officials with the Bloomfield Department of Public Safety tell KWOC News that on Tuesday, officers were dispatched to an area residence for a 17 month old toddler who was found unresponsive in a bathtub full of water.
The toddler was later pronounced dead at an area hospital. The Stoddard County Major Case Squad was partially activated and it was determined that the toddler had been left unattended for an extended period of time.

ONE IN CUSTODY AFTER HUMAN REMAINS FOUND IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
Officials in Southeast Missouri say that one person is in custody after human remains were found this week.
According to Bollinger County Sheriff Casey Graham, on Monday, the Sheriff’s department received information in reference to a report of a missing adult female out of Madison County.
Bollinger County Deputies and investigators from the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control conducted an investigation within Bollinger County and collected numerous items of evidence including human remains.
Graham says that one subject is in custody at the Bollinger County Jail pending the filing of formal criminal charges. The identities of the subject in custody and the missing female were not released.
According to Graham, the investigation is ongoing.
LADY RAIDERS TO PLAY TODAY FOR SPOT IN NATIONAL SEMI-FINALS
The Three Rivers College Lady Raiders will play today for a spot in the national semi-finals.
The 9 seed Lady Raiders will play 16 seed Western Nebraska at 1 pm this afternoon in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Women's Basketball Championship.
Three Rivers enters the game 23-0 with wins over the 24 and 8 seeds in the tournament. Western Nebraska is 17-5 on the season and upset the number 1 seed Jones in the second round.
BELL CITY MAN ARRESTED FOR FAILURE TO REGISTER AS A SEX OFFENDER
A sex offender has been taken into custody in Stoddard County.
According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 33 year old Jimmy Leon Garrett Jr, of Bell City, was recently booked for failure to register as a sex offender.
He had been convicted of Statutory Sodomy – 2nd degree in 2007.
Officials say that no bond was set.
WORLD RECORD FISH CAUGHT AT WAPPAPELLO LAKE
A world record sized fish has been caught at Wappapello Lake.
The Missouri Department of Conservation announced this week that on February 25th, Devlin Rich, of Williamsville, reeled in a 10-pound, 9-ounce spotted gar.
The previous world record for spotted gar was a 9 pound, 12 ounce fish caught in 1994.
MDC staff verified Rich’s record-breaking catch on a certified scale in Williamsville. It is the second state record fish caught in 2021.
POPLAR BLUFF POLICE PHONE LINES TO BE DOWN TONIGHT FOR MAINTENANCE
There will be a disruption in phone service tonight at the Poplar Bluff Police Department.
According to officials, from 11pm to midnight tonight, the Poplar Bluff Police phone lines will be down for maintenance. The 911 lines will not be affected during the outage.

TWO DEAD FOLLOWING WRECK IN RIPLEY COUNTY
Two people have died from injuries they received in a Ripley County wreck.

TWO DEAD FOLLOWING WRECK IN RIPLEY COUNTY
Two people have died from injuries they received in a Ripley County wreck.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 24 year old Austin Harris, of Poplar Bluff, was driving on US Highway 160 near Fairdealing, when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck another vehicle.
The wreck occurred shortly before 5:30 pm Tuesday evening.
The driver of the second vehicle, 36 year old Timmy Asberry, of Doniphan, was pronounced dead at the scene. Harris was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
LADY RAIDERS TO PLAY IN NATIONAL QUARTERFINAL
The Three Rivers College Lady Raiders are three games away from a perfect season.
The nine seed Lady Raiders defeated the eight seed Casper College Tuesday 68-60 in the second round of the NJCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.
Myia Yelder led the Raiders with 16 points, closely followed by Chaylea Mosby, who added 14 points.
Three Rivers will face the 16 seed Western Nebraska on Thursday at 2 pm in the National Quarterfinals. Western Nebraska upset the number 1 seed Jones 63-60 on Tuesday.
TWO SERIOUSLY INJURED IN CRASH NEAR PUXICO
Two Puxico residents were seriously injured in a crash Tuesday evening in Stoddard County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 35 year old Jason Merrill was driving on Highway 51, six miles south of Puxico, when his vehicle crossed the center of the roadway and struck another vehicle.
Merrill and the driver of the second vehicle each suffered serious injuries and were transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.
BEAR SPOTTED IN BLOOMFIELD
Bloomfield residents are being urged to take precautions after a bear was spotted.
The Bloomfield Department of Public Safety announced Tuesday that they have received several reports of a bear being spotted on the west side of town.
The Missouri Department of Conservation has been alerted and is advising residents to keep all trash cans and any other food sources put up.
If you see the bear, do not approach it and contact authorities.
MISSOURI DHSS DIRECTOR STEPS DOWN
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has a new director.
Governor Mike Parson tells KWOC News that his Deputy Chief of Staff Robert Knodell has been named as Acting Director of the Missouri DHSS effective immediately.
Parson says that over the past year, Knodell has played an integral part in the state’s COVID-19 response efforts and taken a leading role in vaccine rollout and distribution in Missouri.
Knodell is a Poplar Bluff native who has served as Deputy Chief of Staff since 2018.
The Governor accepted a letter of resignation from former director Dr. Randall Williams earlier on Tuesday.
CULVERT REPLACEMENT TO CAUSE DELAYS IN STODDARD COUNTY
Route D in Stoddard County will be reduced this week so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a culvert under the roadway.
The section of roadway to be reduced is located between Route 25 and County Road 717.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 7:30 am to 4 pm daily both today and tomorrow.

LADY RAIDERS ADVANCE TO SECOND ROUND OF NJCAA TOURNAMENT
The Three Rivers College Lady Raiders used a late run to propel themselves into the second round of the NJCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.
The Nine seed Lady Raiders defeated 24 seed Eastern Oklahoma State 76-74 on Monday in Lubbock, Texas.

THREE FLOWN FROM SCENE OF BUTLER COUNTY WRECK
Three people were flown from the scene of a Butler County wreck Monday morning.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at around 8:30 am at the intersection of Routes B and AA, east of Poplar Bluff.
A vehicle driven by 26 year old Gwendolyn Stokes, of Poplar Bluff, reportedly failed to yield and traveled into the path of another vehicle.
Stokes, a passenger in her vehicle, and a passenger in the second vehicle were flown to Memphis area hospitals. The driver of the second vehicle was transported by ambulance to a Poplar Bluff hospital.
FREEZE WARNING TO BE IN EFFECT TOMORROW MORNING
Weather officials are warning of sub-freezing temperatures and possible snow tonight.
According to the National Weather Service, a freeze warning will be in effect for Butler, Stoddard, and Scott counties in Southeast Missouri from 1 am to 9 am Wednesday morning.
Temperatures as low as 30 degrees are expected and residents are being urged to take steps to protect tender plants from the cold and prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes.
We are also looking at possible snow showers tonight, however little or no snow accumulation is expected.
GUNS AND METH FOUND DURING SEARCH IN NEW MADRID
A search warrant led to the arrest of multiple people in New Madrid.
According to the New Madrid Police Department, on April 16th, officers served a search warrant at an area residence. During the search, officers seized a total of over one half pound of suspected methamphetamine and four handguns.
Two people were arrested in connection to the search, but their identities were not released.
Officials say that the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted with the search.
POPLAR BLUFF PROM GRAND MARCH TO BE STREAMED ONLINE
The Poplar Bluff Prom is set for this weekend.
According to officials with Poplar Bluff High School, the prom will be held on Saturday, April 24th.
The Grand March is scheduled to begin at 7 pm and will also be streamed on Facebook Live.
AREA LIBRARY DIRECTOR RECEIVES AWARD
An area library director has been recognized by the Missouri Association of School Libraries for her working relationship with the Poplar Bluff R-I school system.
Poplar Bluff Municipal Library Director Sue Crites Szostak received the 2021 Friend of School Libraries award during a virtual conference on Monday.
According to Poplar Bluff school officials, she was nominated for the statewide award by O’Neal Elementary Librarian Ashley Robertson, who previously worked with her at the public library.

The nine seed Lady Raiders will play 24 seed Eastern Oklahoma State College at noon today in Lubbock, Texas for the 1st round of the NJCAA Women’s Basketball tournament.
Three Rivers enters the tournament with an undefeated 21-0 record. Eastern Oklahoma is 18-4 for the season.

MULTIPLE PEOPLE SHOT IN SIKESTON
Authorities are investigating two shootings that occurred over the weekend in Sikeston.
According to authorities, two victims reported receiving gunshot wounds to the leg shortly before 4 pm on Sunday.
No information was released on possible suspects in the cases or if the shootings were connected.
TWO TEENS INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK
Two teenagers were injured Saturday night in a single vehicle wreck.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 17 year old male was driving on Route U in the New Madrid area when his vehicle ran off the roadway, struck a ditch and overturned.
A passenger in the vehicle, an 18 year old female from New Madrid, was seriously injured in the wreck and flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital.
The driver received minor injuries.
BRIGGS AND STRATTON TO HOST OPEN INTERVIEWS ON TUESDAY
A Poplar Bluff employer will be interviewing job seekers this week.
Briggs and Stratton LLC is hosting open interviews from 9 to 11 am and from 3 to 5 pm on Tuesday, April 20th.

WAPPAPELLO LAKE BEACHES TO OPEN THIS FRIDAY
This weekend, area residents will get to experience some of Southeast Missouri’s great beaches.
According to officials, all U.S. Army Corps of Engineers beaches at Wappapello Lake will open on April 23rd.
Anyone who heads to the beach is being asked to always wear your life jacket when you are in, near, or around water.
WAYNE COUNTY ROAD TO BE REDUCED THIS WEEK
Route 34 in Wayne County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews repair the bridge over Clark Creek.
According to officials, the work zone is located between County Roads 313 and 312.
Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday, from 7 am to 4:30 pm daily.

MULTIPLE DRUGS FOUND IN KENNETT HOTEL ROOM
Officials in Kennett recently discovered multiple drugs in an area hotel room.
According to authorities, ecstasy, mushrooms, prescription medication, and over three pounds of methamphetamine were discovered in the hotel room.

65 year old Terry O’Neil, of Kennett, was arrested and is facing charges including 1st degree trafficking drugs and delivery of a controlled substance.
His bond was set at $125,000.
MAN SENTENCED TO 9 YEARS IN PRISON AFTER PLEADING GUILTY TO DRUG CHARGE
A Poplar Bluff man is facing almost a decade in prison after pleading guilty to a drug charge.
According to Missouri Case Net, Ronnie Allen Jr. pled guilty on Thursday to charges of possession of a controlled substance except 35 grams or less of marijuana, assault – 2nd degree, and kidnapping 2nd degree.
The charges stem from incidents in 2019.
Allen was sentenced to nine years in prison on the controlled substance charge and seven years each on the kidnapping and assault charges. The sentences are to run concurrently.
TWO ARRESTED IN BUTLER COUNTY ON METH CHARGES
Two people were taken into custody Thursday afternoon in Butler County on methamphetamine related charges.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 33 year old Amanda Dickson, of East Prairie, and 29 year old Ashley Combs, of Springfield, were both arrested at approximately 4:30 pm Thursday on charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and tampering with a motor vehicle.
Combs is also facing a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance at a county correctional facility.
Officials say that both women were held at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.
TWO ARRESTED AFTER GUN AND METHAMPHETAMINE FOUND IN WAYNE COUNTY RESIDENCE
A search warrant led to the arrest of two people this week in Wayne County.
According to Wayne County Sheriff Dean Finch, deputies served a search warrant on Tuesday at the residence of Linda Schlater.
Officials reportedly found a firearm, methamphetamine, marijuana, pills, and drug paraphernalia inside the residence. Both Schlater and Timothy Daggs were taken into custody and booked into the Wayne County Jail.
MISSOURI HOUSE ADVANCES BILL ON MAKING DAYLIGHT SAVING PERMANENT
The Missouri House has advanced a bill that would make daylight saving time permanent.
The House gave the proposal initial approval in a voice vote earlier this week.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 15 states have adopted similar provisions, however federal law prevents states from moving to daylight saving time permanently.
The Missouri bill would only take effect if Congress changes federal law.
176 TRAFFIC FATALITIES REPORTED IN MISSOURI DURING FIRST QUARTER OF 2021
Missouri Transportation officials are warning residents about reckless driving.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, during the first quarter of the year, there were 176 fatalities in Missouri as a result of traffic crashes.
Though down slightly from the first quarter of 2020, officials remain concerned increases in speed observed during the early stages of the pandemic have carried over into 2021.
Preliminary reporting indicates excessive speed played a role in nearly one-third of the traffic deaths so far this year. In a recent work zone, law enforcement officers issued 79 citations including several drivers traveling over 100 mph within just a few hours.
The number of fatalities under the age of 21 has increased by 58% during the first quarter. Likewise, 19 pedestrians have been killed so far in Missouri traffic crashes.

Updating a story we brought to you yesterday, Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol have released additional information about an arrest made earlier this week for sexual trafficking.
On Tuesday investigators contacted 61 year old Chester Burress at his residence in Poplar Bluff, regarding an ongoing investigation. During their contact with Burress, child pornography was located on his cellular telephone. Burress was arrested and transported to the Butler County Jail.

RECOUNT DOES NOT CHANGE RESULT OF USE TAX MEASURE
A hand recount of a Poplar Bluff use tax measure has concluded.
Last week, preliminary results showed the measure being defeated 381 no votes to 377 yes votes.
The hand recount showed a slight change, but the proposition still failed 380 to 377.
SPECIAL OLYMPICS RETURN TO POPLAR BLUFF THIS WEEK
The Special Olympics are returning to Poplar Bluff this week.
The Poplar Bluff Area Spring Games hosted by Special Olympics Missouri is scheduled to begin at 9 am on Friday.
The games will be held at Fred Morrow Stadium at the Poplar Bluff Junior High School.
POPLAR BLUFF POLICE DEPARTMENT TO HOST DRUG TAKE BACK EVENT
Area residents will have a chance to safely dispose of their unused or expired medication next week.
The Poplar Bluff Police Department is one of several area organizations that will be taking part in the National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 24th from 10 am to 2 pm.
Participants must simply bring unused, unwanted, or expired medications to the Police Department for disposal. The service is free and anonymous.

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN IN CUSTODY AFTER FLEEING FROM AUTHORITIES
A Poplar Bluff woman has been taken into custody after allegedly fleeing from police.
According to authorities, 50 year old Mildred Fowler was taken into custody Tuesday night on charges of resisting arrest by fleeing and failure to display valid plates.
Following the arrest, Fowler was held at the Butler County Jail.
21ST ANNUAL POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL FOUNDATION GOLF TOURNAMENT SET FOR THIS MONTH
The 21st Annual Poplar Bluff School Foundation Golf Tournament is coming up at the end of this month.
The four person scramble tournament is scheduled for Friday, April 30th, at Ozark Ridge Golf Course. Tee time will be at noon.

According to the Dexter Police Department, Chief of Police Trevor Pulley has taken over as the Dexter City Administrator.
Following the change, Captain Hank Trout was promoted to Chief of Police.

Authorities in Butler County have arrested an area man on a child trafficking charge.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 61 year old Chester Burres, of Poplar Bluff, was arrested Tuesday morning on charges of sexual trafficking of a child – 2nd degree and furnishing pornographic material to a minor.
Burres was held at the Butler County Jail following the arrest.
TWO FOUND DEAD IN MOTOR HOME
Authorities in New Madrid County are investigating two deaths.
According to authorities, 35 year old Bryant Akridge and 29 year old Amber Womack were found dead Tuesday in a motor home in Lilbourn.
Officials say there had been a fire inside the motor home. The incident is under investigation.
POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS RAISE ALMOST $30,000 FOR ST. JUDE
Poplar Bluff students have raised over a million dollars to help children fighting cancer.
Students raised almost $30,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital this year during the Math-A-Thon, bringing the district’s accumulative contribution to over $1.1 million.
Top fundraising students for the Math-A-Thon were treated to pizza and a movie for their efforts. The group of students—three per participating building—included last year’s top fundraisers who missed out on the reward due to the district’s wellness break.
The Poplar Bluff School District has been part of the Math-A-Thon since the 1988/89 academic year under the direction of former O’Neal Principal Lorenzo Sandlin, and the fundraiser went district-wide over the next decade

LAW ENFORCEMENT TO CRACK DOWN ON DRUGGED DRIVING
Watching for drugged driving offenders will be a priority for Missouri officers this weekend.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, law enforcement will be out from April 16th to the 21st to crack down on drugged driving offenders.
Officials are reminding motorists that while cannabis is now legalized for recreational use in many states and for medicinal use only in Missouri, it is still illegal in all states to drive under the influence of it.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN KILLED IN REYNOLDS COUNTY WRECK
An Ellington man has died following a wreck Sunday night in Reynolds County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 65 year old James Hasty was driving on Highway 106 near Ellington at around 8:30 pm Sunday when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck another vehicle.
Hasty was pronounced dead at the scene by coroner Jeff McSpadden. No injuries were reported for the driver of the second vehicle.
MINOR KILLED IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS WRECK
One person has died and three more are injured in connection to a single vehicle wreck in Northeast Arkansas.
According to the Arkansas State Police, 30 year old Travis Dutton, of Walnut Ridge, was driving on Arkansas State Highway 230 when his vehicle crossed the center line, ran off the roadway, and overturned multiple times.
The incident occurred shortly before 2 pm Monday.
Officials say that a minor in the vehicle was killed in the wreck. Dutton and two other passengers were injured and transported to area hospitals.
THEFT INVESTIGATION LEADS TO FOUR ARRESTS IN WAYNE COUNTY
A theft investigation over the weekend in Wayne County has resulted in four arrests.
According to Wayne County Sheriff Dean Finch, on Saturday deputies conducted an investigation into a misdemeanor theft from a business in Silva.
As a part of the investigation, a search warrant was executed at the residence of Donald Brand. During the search, authorities seized stolen firearms, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia.
Finch says that Brand, along with Kevin Gardner, Chad Buehler, and Leslie Buehler were all taken into custody.
TWO POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN 2021 MISSOURI SCHOLARS ACADEMY
Two Poplar Bluff students will be participating in the 2021 Missouri Scholars Academy.
According to school officials, Mariah DeShaney and Emmalein Pendley will participate in the virtual Scholars Academy in June among 330 of the state’s academically gifted sophomores.
Administered by the University of Missouri Honors College, the program’s selection process is based on grade point average, ACT scores, student essays and letters of recommendation.
Both students were cited by their teachers for participating in athletics, band and various academic clubs, as well as being involved in the community.
PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO FORCE CLOSURE OF CARTER COUNTY ROAD TODAY
A Southeast Missouri road will be closed today for pavement repairs.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route B in Carter County will be closed from 8 am to 3 pm.
The work zone is located between Route K and Route 21. Officials say the road will be open to local traffic only.
