SECOND WAVE OF WINTER WEATHER DROPS UP TO FOUR INCHES OF SNOW IN SOME AREAS

Some areas of Southeast Missouri saw up to four inches of snow during the second wave of winter weather this week.

According to the National Weather Service, the Missouri Bootheel, along with southern Butler and Stoddard counties, as well as most of New Madrid County saw three to four inches of snow on Wednesday and Thursday.

The snow totals gradually declined moving north of that area.

The sunshine and warmer temperatures Thursday afternoon caused some snow that was left over on roads to melt, resulting in wet roads and standing water developing in some areas.

With temperatures falling into the single digits and lower teens overnight, the potential exists for some of this water to refreeze.

Officials are warning motorists to be on the lookout for black ice during your morning commute. 

36TH JUDICIAL CIRCUIT COURT TO MOVE TO OPERATING PHASE THREE NEXT WEEK

The circuit court that serves Butler and Ripley Counties will be upgrading its COVID-19 Operational Phase next week.

Michael Pritchett, presiding judge of the 36th Judicial Circuit, tells KWOC News that the court will move to Operating Phase three on February 22nd.

Phase three will see the court resume proceedings in compliance with local social distancing and occupancy limit protocols. Courtrooms and other public spaces will also be open with social distancing protocols. 

SECOND WATER LINE BURSTS IN CORNING

A second water line has burst in the city of Corning.

A state of emergency was issued for the city on Wednesday after A water line on Stephens Lane burst. City officials say that the water line was restored, but then a water line on Cherry burst as well.

Last night officials posted on Facebook that water pressure in the system is building, but a boil water order will be in effect until they get test results back from the health department. 

BLOOD DRIVE TO BE HELD THIS SUNDAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

A blood drive has been scheduled for this weekend in Poplar Bluff.

According to the American Red Cross, the blood drive will be held from noon to 5 pm on Sunday at the Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce. 

Those who give blood will receive a $5 Amazon.com gift card.

According to officials, over 700 units of blood donations in our area have been cancelled due to the recent winter weather. 

BOIL WATER ORDER ISSUED FOR PART OF PIEDMONT

Parts of a Wayne County city are under a boil water order.

The city of Piedmont issued a boil water order for the city’s public water system north of the Pit stop. Areas that are affected by the order include the Nursing home, Highway 49 North, Canyon Road, and Highway 34 east to the Eagles Club.

The order was issued because a facility experienced a water break and will be in effect until further notice. 

TRAFFIC FATALITIES WERE UP LAST YEAR IN MISSOURI

Despite traffic volumes in the state being significantly down for much of 2020, Missouri experienced its largest number of traffic fatalities since 2007.

Preliminary reporting for 2020 indicates Missouri traffic fatalities increased by 12 percent compared to 2019. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 989 people died in Missouri traffic crashes in 2020, up from 881 in 2019.

In particular, there were notable increases in unbuckled and speed related fatalities, with both experiencing approximately a 25% increase from the previous year.

In addition, there were 126 pedestrians killed in 2020 –the largest number of pedestrian fatalities ever recorded in Missouri.

WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR MISSOURI BOOTHEEL

A winter storm warning remains in effect for the Missouri Bootheel and Northeast Arkansas through this evening.

According to the National Weather Service, New Madrid, Dunklin and Pemiscot Counties in Missouri along with Clay and Greene Counties in Arkansas could see heavy mixed precipitation through 6 pm this evening.

A winter weather advisory is also in effect for Butler, Stoddard, Ripley and Scott counties in Southeast Missouri through 6 pm tonight.

Officials say residents should plan on slippery road conditions that could impact the morning commute.

STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED IN CORNING DUE TO BUSTED WATER MAIN

A State of Emergency was declared yesterday in Corning.

According to Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller, the state of emergency was due to a busted water main. The Sheriff’s Department and Corning Police Department were working together to get bottled water distributed.

2000 gallons of fresh water was also delivered to Corning from Greene County. 

DEXTER MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON RAPE CHARGE

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested an area man on a rape charge.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 28 year old Patrick Varner, of Dexter was recently taken into custody on charges of Rape or Attempted Rape – 1st degree and Statutory Rape 2nd degree.

Officials say that no bond was set. 

INMATE WHO WALKED AWAY FROM WORK RELEASE IS BACK IN CUSTODY

An inmate who escaped over the weekend is back in custody.

On Wednesday, Greene County Sheriff Steve Franks announced that 19 year old Joseph Bridges had walked away from a work release on Sunday.

According to Franks, Bridges was quickly apprehended and is now facing a charge of felony escape. 

MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION RELEASES TIPS FOR SHOVELING YOUR DRIVEWAY

With the winter weather coming to an end today, the Missouri Department of Transportation has released some advice for people who will be shoveling snow from your driveway.

One of the main tips was to shovel snow on the shoulder to the left of your driveway as you are facing the street. This will help stop snow plows from pushing snow back into your driveway, making you have to shovel snow again.

Everyone is also being asked to shovel snow away from the area around fire hydrants. This is in case there is a fire emergency in your area and fire crews need to find and access the hydrant quickly. 

RUSH LIMBAUGH DIES AT THE AGE OF 70

Famous talk radio host Rush Limbaugh has died.

The Cape Girardeau native died Wednesday at the age of 70, a year after announcing that he had Stage Four lung cancer.

His three-hour weekday radio show is broadcast on nearly 600 stations across the United States.

Donald Trump awarded Limbaugh the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2020, the nation's highest civilian honor.

WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FOR MISSOURI BOOTHEEL

A winter storm warning is in effect for the Missouri Bootheel and Northeast Arkansas through this evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, heavy snow is expected with total snow accumulations of four to six inches possible. The Winter Storm Warning is expected to be in effect through 6 pm Thursday.

The National Weather Service in Paducah says that the rest of Southeast Missouri is under a Winter Weather Advisory until noon today.

Total snow accumulations of one to three inches are expected, however up to 4 inches of snow accumulation cannot be ruled out in a few locations closer to the Missouri and Arkansas border.

ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE MEMBERS ASKED TO REDUCE ELECTRIC USAGE

Residents in Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas have been asked to reduce their electric usage in order to prevent rolling blackouts.

Associated Electric Cooperative, which provides power generation and transmission to many electric cooperatives in Missouri, announced plans for rolling blackouts yesterday before cancelling them.

According to a post on the Ozark Border Electric Cooperative’s Facebook page, there is no time frame set for rolling blackouts to begin or if they will even happen at all for Ozark Border.

Last night, the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas announced that they were forced to implement emergency contingency plans that included short-term, rotating power curtailments at some local electric cooperatives. Officials say that the curtailments were discontinued at 9 pm, however the situation remains critical.

DATES ANNOUNCED FOR COVID 19 VACCINE DISTRIBUTION IN CARTER COUNTY

Officials in Carter County have announced new dates for distribution of the COVID-19 Vaccine.

According to the Carter County Health Center, if you were scheduled for your initial dose of the COVID vaccine on February 11th, your appointment has been moved to Tuesday, February 23rd.

This will be a walk-through event, so you will come into the health department to receive your vaccination. Appointment times will remain the same.

Individuals that were scheduled for their second dose of COVID vaccine on February 18th or 19th have had their appointments moved to Thursday, February 25th at the same times. All of these vaccinations will be done in a drive-thru format.

Southeast Health has announced that all of their COVID-19 vaccine clinics in Dexter have been postponed. Individuals enrolled in these clinics will be notified by email or phone to reschedule. 

DRIVERS URGED TO BE CAUTIOUS DURING MORNING COMMUTE

A second round of winter weather is hitting Southeast Missouri this morning and the Missouri Department of Transportation is urging drivers to be cautious during the morning commute.

Officials say that drivers should try to stay off the roads until any snow has stopped falling, if possible.

The chemicals used to treat the roads lose their effectiveness in the bitterly cold temperatures that we are experiencing.

Any thawing that occurred during daylight hours yesterday possibly refroze overnight causing patches of black ice and slippery road conditions, particularly on elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses.

Remember to watch out for snowplows and give them plenty of room to work.

According to the Highway Patrol, as of 8 pm last night troopers in Southeast Missouri assisted 57 stranded motorists on Tuesday and worked eight crashes, none of which involved injuries or fatalities. 

RESIDENTS IN TWO AREA COMMUNITIES ADVISED TO BOIL THEIR WATER

Residents in two Southeast Missouri communities were advised to start boiling their water yesterday.

City officials in Naylor issued a boil water advisory on Tuesday due to the use of the auxiliary well. Residents should boil water for five minutes before drinking it or using it to cook with. It is safe to take baths and showers as well as to wash clothes and dishes, just don’t add bleach. The advisory is in effect until further notice.

The city of Qulin has also announced they are under a boil water advisory until further notice. No information was given on the cause for Qulin’s advisory. 

FIRE OFFICIALS URGE RESIDENTS TO USE SPACE HEATERS SAFELY

Fire officials are urging area residents to remember to use space heaters safely.

If you are using a space heater to heat up portions of your home, do not leave it unattended. Always unplug it before you leave the house or go to bed. Remember not to use an extension cord for the heater as that can cause it to overheat.

Make sure not to place the heater near curtains, clothing, furniture or bedding and don’t place it in the bathroom.

According to the Hayti Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to a fully involved structure fire Monday Night. The home was unoccupied at the time but it was later learned that the homeowners were home when the fire started.

Officials say the fire was caused by a turbo style heater that was being used to help unthaw some frozen water lines.

SECOND WINTER STORM EVENT OF THE WEEK POSSIBLY BEGINNING TOMORROW MORNING

The first major snow storm of the year blanketed Southeast Missouri on Monday.

According to storm reports from the National Weather Service, snow measurements ranged from five inches to 12 inches across the region with multi foot snow drifts also reported.

Weather officials are also continuing to track a potential winter system that will impact our area on Wednesday and Thursday.

Officials say that there is the potential for significant wintry precipitation however, the exact types and amounts are yet to be determined. The potential is generally moderate for at least four inches of snow and/or sleet.

DRIVING IS STILL TREACHEROUS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Even though the first winter weather event of the week has come to an end, Missouri drivers are being advised that the roads are still very dangerous.

Snow plows have been working to get roads clean, but many major highways are still covered or partly covered this morning.

According to the Highway Patrol, Troopers in Southeast Missouri assisted 100 stranded motorists and worked 13 crashes Monday as of 7 pm. None of the crashes involved injuries or fatalities.

If you must travel today, make sure you have a full tank of gas, extra blankets and gloves, as well as provisions like water and snacks in the event of an emergency. Keep your cellphone charged, but do not use it while driving.

While driving, remember to buckle up, give yourself plenty of extra time to get to your destination, and remember to give snowplows room to work. Don’t tailgate or attempt to pass them. In the event of a crash, stay buckled inside your vehicle until help arrives.

MASS VACCINATION CLINICS IN MISSOURI CANCELLED FOR THIS WEEK

Missouri Governor Mike Parson announced Monday that all COVID-19 mass vaccination events in partnership with the Missouri National Guard, Department of Health and Senior Services, and State Emergency Management Agency scheduled for this week are being canceled due to extreme winter weather.

In Southeast Missouri that will include the clinic scheduled for Wednesday at the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff. Officials with the Butler County Health Department say that residents can still go to CovidVaccine.mo.gov/navigator to register to be notified for when the event will be rescheduled.

The Carter County Health Center says that they have cancelled the vaccination clinics that were scheduled for today. No make-up date was announced however officials say that they will call with appointment times when the weather allows.

The Dunklin County Health Department has also postponed their mass vaccination clinic scheduled for Wednesday. The event has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 23rd at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center.

Governor Parson went on to say that the cancellation of this week's mass vaccination events will not change weekly regional vaccine allocations.

RESIDENTS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS ASKED TO LIMIT ELECTRIC USE

The Winter Weather and cold temperatures has caused an extreme demand for electricity across the Midwest.

The Ozark Border Electric Cooperative has issued a peak alert effective immediately through Friday, February 19th.  Members are asked to reduce their use of electricity as much as possible.

According to the Ozark Border, some of the things you can do to use less electricity include turning down your thermostat two to three degrees, minimizing the use of major appliances, using space heaters sparingly, turning off lights, and unplugging small appliances when not in use.

The Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas as well as the Pemiscot-Dunklin Electric Cooperative have also been advising users on how to reduce electricity use. 

ADDITIONAL WARMING CENTERS AVAILABLE TO HELP BATTLE THE COLD

Additional warming centers are available in Butler County to help people get out of the cold weather.

Night warming stations in Poplar Bluff have been set up at the Butler County Behavioral Health Clinic at 3001 Warrior Lane and at 2nd Baptist Church at 503 Pine Street.

Daytime warning centers in Poplar Bluff are still available at the Butler County Health Department and Poplar Bluff Public Library.

POPLAR BLUFF CITY COUNCIL COULD VOTE TODAY ON FINANCING FOR NEW POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Poplar Bluff City Council is scheduled to meet tonight and the new Police Department facility is one of the items on the agenda.

There are three action required items on the agenda for the City Council meeting, the main being an ordinance authorizing the city to enter into an agreement for financing of the proposed Police Department facility.

The Council will also take action on separate ordinances implementing a seven dollar surcharge or fee to go specifically to the Statewide Court Automation Fund and allowing the city to enter into an agreement with Southwestern Power Administration.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 pm tonight at the City Council Chambers on 5th street.

WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING

A winter storm warning is in effect for most of Southeast Missouri until 6 am Tuesday morning and for Northeast Arkansas and the Missouri bootheel until midnight tonight.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm system will bring heavy snow to the region with total snow accumulations of six to 12 inches possible. Many areas received minor snow accumulations last night and early this morning.

Weather officials are expecting the heaviest snow to start falling later this morning.

In addition to the snow, north winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts of 20 to 30 mph will likely cause blowing and drifting of the snow as well as bitterly cold wind chills. Wind chill values will range from 0 to negative 15 degrees.

Weather officials say that another storm is taking aim at the area later this week. This storm system is expected to bring significant amounts of precipitation Wednesday and Thursday, mainly in the form of snow in Southeast Missouri.

RESIDENTS ADVISED TO AVOID DRIVING DURING WINTER WEATHER

Southeast Missouri residents are being advised to avoid all non-essential travel today.

Snowfall accumulations are creating dangerous conditions for driving, and officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation say that both morning and evening commutes today will be impacted

WARMING CENTERS OPEN IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

With wind chill values dropping below zero degrees, several warming centers have opened in Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service, wind chill values are expected to get as low as -12 today and -10 degrees tomorrow in Poplar Bluff.  

Warming centers have been set up at numerous locations in Southeast Missouri, including the Butler County Health Department and the Poplar Bluff Public Library in Poplar Bluff. 

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has also made a website available for finding warming centers in your area at https://ogi.oa.mo.gov/DHSS/warmingCenter/.  

BUTLER COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES NEW VACCINE CLINIC FOR THIS WEEK

The Butler County Health Department has announced another round of Covid-19 vaccines will be distributed this week. 

According to health officials, the next clinic will be on February 17th from 8 am to 4 pm at the Black River Coliseum. The clinic will be for people receiving their first dose and will be open to those who fall in the current tiers and phases of the Missouri State Plan.

To register for the clinic, go to CovidVaccine.MO.gov/navigator.

Officials say that anyone who was registered to receive the second dose of the vaccine last Friday at the Black River Coliseum, but could not make it due to road conditions, will be contacted soon to set up an appointment for February 16th. 

Anyone who received their first Covid-19 vaccination at Hydro Adventure on January 22nd or at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center on January 23rd and still have not received their second dose is asked to email bchc@semo.net.

WRECK DISRUPTS POWER FOR PARTS OF POPLAR BLUFF

A Friday wreck disrupted power for portions of Poplar Bluff.

According to authorities, the wreck occurred Friday evening on Westwood Boulevard near the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center.

The vehicle struck a utility pole causing power to go out for a stretch of Westwood Boulevard for a short time. The driver was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES TO BE FOLLOWED BY SNOWFALL EARLY NEXT WEEK

Bitterly cold temperatures are going to fall over Southeast Missouri this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, temperatures will drop to the single digits early Sunday and Monday mornings with the wind chill ranging from zero to negative 10.

Officials say that prolonged exposure to this kind of cold could result in frostbite if precautions are not taken.

Starting early Monday morning we also have chances of snow returning to the area. Weather officials say that they are monitoring two winter weather systems for next week. The first should be Monday into Monday night with the second forecasted for next Wednesday into Wednesday night.

According to a Hazardous Weather Outlook, accumulating snow and travel impacts are possible with these systems.

POPLAR BLUFF PEDIATRICIAN ARRESTED ON SODOMY CHARGE

A pediatrician from Poplar Bluff has been taken into custody on a sodomy charge.

Officials with the Dexter Police Department tell KWOC News that in December of last year, a male juvenile and his father came to the Dexter Police Department to report sexual allegations involving the juvenile and an adult male.

The juvenile said that he had been inappropriately touched in a sexual manner by his pediatrician, Dr. Joseph Fernando of Poplar Bluff.

In January a warrant was issued for Fernando for statutory sodomy or attempted statutory sodomy - deviate sexual intercourse. Officials say that the victim was less than 14 years old.

Fernando turned himself into the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday and is being held on a no bond warrant.

The investigation is continuing and anyone who has information regarding any concerns involving Dr. Fernando is asked to contact the Dexter Police Department at 573-624-5512.

NO TRAVEL ADVISORY ENDED FOR SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says that the “No Travel Advisory” for southeast Missouri has been lifted.

Officials with Troop E of the Highway Patrol tell us that as of 8 pm last night, Southeast Missouri Troopers responded to 67 stranded motorists, 49 crashes, and 5 injury crashes on Thursday.

Motorists are still advised to drive cautiously as many major roads are still partly covered and minor roads could be covered as well.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ISSUES REPORT ON THIS WEEK’S ICE STORM

The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued their report on the Ice Storm that occurred this week.

According to the report, ice accumulations ranging from a tenth of an inch to a quarter of an inch were reported along and east of Interstate 55 in Southeast Missouri with lesser ice reported to the west of that area.

In addition to the ice, sleet amounts ranging half an inch to one and a half inches occurred across Southeast Missouri. 

VACCINE CLINIC TO BE HELD TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

Officials with the Butler County Health Department say that the Mass Vaccine Clinic today at the Black River Coliseum will continue as scheduled.

The Health Department says that at this time there are no plans for a second dose event and due to the type and storage of the vaccine, they are unable to reschedule appointments. However, things are subject to change.

There will be golf carts available to assist people from the parking lots to the front doors and the top drive will also be open so people can drop off or pick up someone receiving their vaccinations.

The Poplar Bluff Police Department is asking motorists to avoid the Coliseum area today from 8 am to 4 pm during the clinic. 

BLOOMFIELD MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON SODOMY CHARGE IN STODDARD COUNTY

Authorities in Stoddard County say a Bloomfield man is in custody on a sodomy charge.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 45 year old Leroy Moxley was recently booked on two counts of statutory sodomy or attempted statutory sodomy – deviate sexual intercourse. The victim was reportedly under 12 years of age.

Officials say that Moxley’s bond was set at $25,000, cash only.

ICE STORM WARNING CONTINUES THROUGH THIS EVENING

Freezing rain and sleet blanketed Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas yesterday causing numerous school and business closures as well as treacherous road conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, an Ice Storm Warning will continue to be in effect today through noon for Northeast Arkansas and the Missouri bootheel and through 6 pm for parts of the rest of Southeast Missouri.

Weather officials say that additional ice or sleet accumulations are possible today. These accumulations could result in some tree damage and power outages. 

DRIVERS URGED TO STAY OFF ROADS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Freezing rain and sleeting continued overnight across Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas and Missouri state officials are urging people to stay off the roads if possible.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, while crews will be working continuous 12 hour shifts through these storms, bitterly cold temperatures can delay clean-up. Chemicals used to treat the roads start to lose their effectiveness below 25 degrees.

Officials say that people should avoid driving if possible, particularly in areas where icing is occurring.

If you must be out, make sure you have a full tank of gas, extra blankets and gloves as well as provisions like water and snacks in the event of an emergency. Stay inside your vehicle in the event of a crash or slide off.

WINTER WEATHER CAUSES DANGEROUS ROAD CONDITIONS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Yesterday’s winter weather caused dangerous driving conditions over most of Southeast Missouri.

According to Troop E of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, as of 8 pm on Wednesday, Southeast Missouri troopers had responded to almost 76 stranded motorists and 96 crashes. 11 of the crashes involved injuries.

There were no fatal crashes reported Wednesday in Troop E.  

MULTIPLE VACCINE CLINICS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY CANCELLED

Multiple COVID-19 vaccine clinics that were scheduled for today have been cancelled due to the weather.

The Dunklin County Health Department announced yesterday that their vaccine clinic has been rescheduled for February 17th at First Baptist Church Family Life Center. Officials say that everyone will keep their same appointment times.

Officials with the Carter County Health Center say that they have tentatively rescheduled all doses that were going to be done today to February 16th at the same scheduled times. 

STUDENT RUN MERCHANDISE STORE OPENED AT POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL

A student run merchandise store has opened at Poplar Bluff High School.

The grand opening of The Stable was held before the Mules homecoming game last week. The retail space is located between the gymnasium and the cafeteria, and sells Mules T-shirts, cups and other school spirit memorabilia, as well as some practical items such as phone chargers and earbuds.

According to student leaders, the plan is to operate the store during varsity basketball games and then hopefully during the school day next school year. If approved, students managing the business would gain credit hours.

All proceeds benefit the Student Council organization.

TWO ARRESTED IN NEW MADRID COUNTY ON FELONY FIREARM CHARGES

Two Illinois residents were taken into custody early Wednesday morning in Southeast Missouri on firearm and drug charges.

According to authorities, 21 year old Henry Taylor and 20 year old Jamarre McNeal, both of Danville, Illinois, were arrested in New Madrid County on felony charges of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Both men are also facing charges of possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

ICE STORM WARNING IN EFFECT THROUGH THURSDAY EVENING 

An Ice Storm warning has been placed into effect for parts of Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas through Thursday evening.

According to the National Weather Service, a significant wintry precipitation event is expected to persist in the area through Thursday.

At this time, significant and dangerous ice accumulations are expected by Thursday morning, especially over parts of the Bootheel and Delta regions of southeast Missouri, as well as Northeast Arkansas. However, notable ice accumulation is possible over the remainder of southeast Missouri as well.

Weather officials say that power outages and tree damage are possible due to the ice as well as hazardous travel conditions. 

ROAD OFFICIALS URGE AREA RESIDENTS TO DRIVE CAREFULLY DURING WINTER WEATHER

Winter weather can create treacherous driving conditions and Missouri road officials are urging residents to be cautious if they have to get on the roadways.

The Missouri Department of Transportation says that drivers should plan to double or triple their average commute times once winter precipitation starts.

The storm is bringing dangerously cold temperatures as well. If you’re going to be out, make sure you have a full tank of gas, extra blankets and gloves as well as provisions like water and snacks in the event of an emergency.

Keep your cellphone fully charged but never use it while driving. If you should slide off the road or be involved in a crash, stay inside your vehicle with your seat belt buckled until help arrives.

RECTOR WOMAN DEAD FOLLOWING HEAD ON COLLISION IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A Rector woman has died following a two vehicle wreck Monday in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 57 year old Janet Gunn was driving on US Highway 49 in Greene County when an oncoming vehicle crossed the center line and struck her vehicle head on.

Officials say that Gunn was killed in the wreck. The driver of the other vehicle was injured and transported to an area hospital.  

FORMER POPLAR BLUFF POLICE OFFICER SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS FOR PRODUCING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

A former Poplar Bluff Police Officer has been sentenced for producing child pornography.

Officials with the United States Attorney’s Office tell KWOC News that 40 year old Brandon Hopper, of Poplar Bluff, pled guilty in October to one count of sexual exploitation of a minor.

Hopper’s co-defendant Amber Longhibler used a mobile phone to take sexually explicit images of a child. Hopper was employed as a law enforcement officer with the Poplar Bluff Police Department at the time. Longhibler was sentenced last December to 20 years in prison for her role in the offense.

On Tuesday, Hopper was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the charge. Following his sentence, Hopper will be placed on supervised release for the rest of his life and be required to register as a sex offender.

TEMPERATURES EXPECTED TO DROP CLOSE TO ZERO THIS WEEKEND

Temperatures are expected to drop harshly toward the end of the week in Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service, overnight Thursday night the temperature in Poplar Bluff is expected to bottom out in the mid-teens, before dropping to the lower teens Friday night and then to less than 5 degrees over the weekend.

Warming centers have been set up at numerous locations in Southeast Missouri, including the Butler County Health Department and the Poplar Bluff Public Library in Poplar Bluff. 

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has also made a website available for finding warming centers in your area.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN SENTENCED ON STOLEN AMMUNITION CHARGE

A Poplar Bluff man is facing over four years in prison after being sentenced on a stolen ammunition charge.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 38 year old Christopher Darnell was sentenced Tuesday to 51 months in prison for one count of possession of stolen ammunition.

In April of 2019, Darnell was caught on security footage leaving an area sporting goods store carrying two pails of ammunition without paying for them.

While later speaking with Poplar Bluff police officers, Darnell admitted that he had stolen the ammunition from the store and resold some of it to a firearms dealer.

He pleaded guilty to the charge in September of 2020.

WINTER STORM WATCH TO BE IN EFFECT WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY 

The National Weather Service is urging area residents to be prepared for winter weather that is coming this week.

KWOC News spoke with Rick Shanklin, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Paducah, about the upcoming system.

“That chance of wintery precipitation really is going to continue through much of the week, actually to Wednesday night, possibly even into at least Thursday morning across the area. Our main concern is the midweek system. Possibly beginning by late Tuesday night, certainly during the day Wednesday, and then especially Wednesday night. 

That’s when we could see the greatest accumulations of ice across the region. Some areas, possibly even a quarter of an inch or more.  Also look for some updates regarding that midweek system including a potential for some headlines here over the next day or so. And then we expect much colder air to arrive this weekend. 

In fact, the coldest air of the entire winter season will be with us this weekend, so certainly any wintery precipitation we receive this week will be hard pressed to leave over the days following.”

A winter storm watch is currently set to be in effect from midnight tonight to noon on Thursday. 

WAYNE COUNTY COVID 19 VACCINE CLINIC CANCELLED

 The inclement weather that is projected for this week has caused the cancelation of a Covid-19 Vaccine Clinic.

According to the Wayne County Health Center, they are cancelling the drive through clinic that was scheduled for Thursday and closing their vaccine waiting list.

Officials say that more information on a possible rescheduling of the clinic will be posted on the Wayne County Health Center Facebook page. 

DUNKLIN COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES VACCINE CLINIC

A new Covid-19 vaccine clinic has been scheduled for this week in the Missouri Bootheel.

The Dunklin County Health Department announced Monday that they received 1,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

The vaccine is for those needing their first dose and the health department will be offering a mass COVID-19 vaccination clinic on Thursday at First Baptist Church Family Life Center in Kennett.

The clinic is scheduled for 8:30 am to 4:15 pm.

Registration is required and information on how to register is available on the Dunklin County Health Department Facebook page. 

KENNETT CITY COUNCILMAN ARRESTED

A Southeast Missouri politician has been taken into custody on multiple charges.

According to authorities, Marco Parr, of Kennett, was arrested by the Kennett Police Department following an incident over the weekend. Parr is facing felony charges of 1st degree sodomy or attempted sodomy, 2nd degree kidnapping, 2nd degree domestic assault, and 3rd degree domestic assault.

Parr, who is a Kennett City Councilman, is scheduled to be arraigned this morning in Dunklin County. 

GOVERNOR UNVEILS NEW TOOL TO HELP MISSOURIANS RECEIVE VACCINE

A new tool has been unveiled to assist Missourians in receiving a Covid-19 vaccine.

Governor Mike Parson announced the launch of the Missouri Vaccine Navigator on Monday. The tool allows individuals to register for a vaccine, indicating their desire to be vaccinated. They will then complete a questionnaire to determine their eligibility based on Missouri’s priority phases.

Registrants will be notified upon activation of each phase and alerted when they become eligible. Individuals will then be able to seek vaccination from their health care provider if they have vaccines available or view mass vaccination events and other providers in their area.

In addition to helping individuals register for a vaccine, the Missouri Vaccine Navigator will remind registrants when it is time to schedule their second dose.

The Navigator is available at MOStopsCovid.com/navigator. Those with online accessibility issues are encouraged to call the COVID-19 hotline at 877-435-8411 for registration assistance.

COALITION FOR ROADWAY SAFETY OFFERING GRANTS FOR PROJECT PROM AND GRADUATION

Schools who will be holding Project Prom and Graduation events this year can now apply for grant money to help fund the events.

The Southeast Coalition for Roadway Safety is offering grant funding to local schools that choose student lock-in events for Project Prom or High School graduation. Qualifying schools will receive $200 each to assist with event expenses such as location rental, food or entertainment.

CHANCES OF FREEZING RAIN AND SNOW THIS WEEK

The past weekend’s winter weather could serve as a preview of what is to come later this week.

According to the National Weather Service, there is a chance of freezing rain on Tuesday night and early Wednesday, followed by the possibility of snow showers Wednesday night and Thursday.

Temperatures are going to be dropping along with these weather systems as well. Overnight lows are currently projected to fall into the low tens Thursday and Friday night, followed by getting as cold as 6 degrees over the weekend.   

SHOTS FIRED AT OFFICER IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A subject is in custody after allegedly firing at a police officer in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Paragould Police Department, Sunday afternoon an officer attempted to make contact with a subject who had active warrants for their arrest.

Officials say that as the officer attempted to take the alleged offender into custody, the subject produced a firearm and began firing multiple rounds at the officer. The officer was not struck and was able to return fire. A second officer involved with this incident fired their weapon as well. 

The offender was not injured and was taken into custody.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing and officials say that no further information will be released at this time. 

WAYNE COUNTY HEALTH CENTER SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR VACCINE CLINIC

The Wayne County Health Center has a vaccine clinic tentatively scheduled for this week and is seeking volunteers for the event.

According to Health Center officials, they need both non-medical and medical professional volunteers. Licensed medical professionals will need an active unencumbered license in the state of Missouri.

The Pemiscot County Health Center held a drive through vaccination clinic last week and officials say that over 1400 people were vaccinated during the event.

BUTLER COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT WORKING TO CONTACT VACCINE RECIPIENTS TO REGISTER FOR 2ND VACCINE DOSE

The second mass vaccination clinic in Poplar Bluff is coming up this week.

According to the Butler County Health Department, the clinic will be held Friday at the Black River Coliseum.

The Health Department is working with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services on a registration link for those who received their first COVID vaccination on January 22nd or 23rd.

Officials say they are working on a system that will directly email or call those who are eligible for their 2nd dose so they can get registered.

DONIPHAN MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

A Doniphan man was seriously injured in a Friday morning wreck near Poplar Bluff.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 51 year old Rodney Knapp was travelling on US Highway 67, around 5 miles north of Poplar Bluff, when his vehicle ran off the roadway and overturned.

Knapp suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital. 

DEXTER MAN ARRESTED IN BUTLER COUNTY ON FELONY DRUG CHARGE

A Dexter man was taken into custody over the weekend on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 31 year old Jesse Stricklan-Schewell was arrested Saturday morning in Butler County on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

He is also facing a charge of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, Stricklan-Schewell was held at the Butler County Jail.

WOMAN FOUND DEAD FOLLOWING FIRE IN KENNETT

A woman was found dead Thursday morning following a fire in Dunklin County.

The Kennett Fire Department responded to the fire at a residence on Depot Street shortly before 10 am. A woman was found deceased at the residence. The identity of the woman has not been released.

Officials have ruled the fire to have been an accident. 

SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK LEAVES ONE DEAD IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

A New Madrid man has died following a single vehicle wreck Thursday morning.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 65 year old James Powell was driving on New Madrid County Road 725 near Kewanee at around 6:45 am when his vehicle ran off the side of the road, struck a fence, and overturned.

Powell, who was reportedly not wearing a safety device, was ejected during the wreck and later pronounced dead at the scene by New Madrid County Coroner George Delisle.

ARKANSAS GOVERNOR INTENDS TO COMMUTE SENTENCE OF CONVICTED MURDERER OUT OF GREENE COUNTY

The Governor of Arkansas is considering commuting the sentence of a convicted murderer out of Northeast Arkansas.

According to Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, he intends to commute the sentence of Cecillia Roleson, who was convicted in Greene County in 1980 for Murder 1st degree. She was sentenced to life without parole and the commutation would make her immediately eligible for parole. 

The Governor’s office says that the Greene County Sheriff has raised objections to the applicant’s request and there is a 30-day waiting period for the public to submit feedback before final action is taken.

RIBBON CUTTING CELEBRATION SCHEDULED FOR TODAY FOR PBHS MERCHANDISE STORE

A ribbon cutting ceremony has been scheduled for today to celebrate the grand opening of a new Poplar Bluff High School merchandise store.

The ceremony for The Stable will be held this afternoon at 3:45 pm.

School officials say that the Stable will be operated by the Student Council and will be open for business during varsity sporting events.  

OZARK NATIONAL SCENIC RIVERWAYS TO CONDUCT PRESCRIBED BURNS THIS YEAR

At least three prescribed burns have been scheduled for the early part of this year in Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Park Service, preparations are underway for Ozark National Scenic Riverways to accomplish several prescribed burns between early February and mid-April.

During the prescribed burns, park operations will continue as usual, although the temporary closure of trails or roads adjacent to the burn unit may be necessary for visitor safety. 

Officials say that the burns will be carefully planned and monitored by the park’s Fire Management staff and the scheduling will be dependent on weather and vegetation meeting certain conditions. 

CONTRACTS AWARDED FOR ROAD PROJECTS IN BUTLER AND STODDARD COUNTY

Contracts have been awarded for various road projects in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, an almost 1.3 million dollar contract was awarded for pavement improvements on Route M in Butler County.

An almost 1.8 million dollar contract was also awarded for numerous projects including pavement improvements on Route E in Stoddard County.

Officials say that additional information, including timelines and impacts to traffic, will be released prior to the start of construction.

MINOR KILLED IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS WRECK

One person has died following a wreck Tuesday in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas State Police, a vehicle was travelling west on Clay County Road 406 at around 1:30 pm when the vehicle lost control and travelled into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

A passenger in the first vehicle was killed in the wreck. The drivers of both vehicles as well as a passenger in each vehicle were injured and transported to a Paragould hospital. 

MASS VACCINATION CLINIC SCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY IN CARUTHERSVILLE

A Covid-19 Mass Vaccination Clinic is scheduled for tomorrow in Pemiscot County.

According to the Pemiscot County Health Center, the clinic will be from 9 am to 4 pm on Friday at Century Casino in Caruthersville.

SPECIAL MEETING OF THE POPLAR BLUFF CITY COUNCIL SCHEDULED FOR THIS AFTERNOON

The Poplar Bluff city council will be holding a special meeting this afternoon to discuss firefighter grants.

On the agenda for the meeting are two different resolutions authorizing the Poplar Bluff Fire Department to apply for grants through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

One resolution is for the purchase of rescue equipment, while the second is for the purchase of a ladder fire truck. 

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 1 pm this afternoon in the City Council chambers on 5th street. 

ONE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN STODDARD COUNTY WRECK 

Two people were injured in a wreck Wednesday morning in Stoddard County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell us that the crash occurred at around 7 am when a vehicle crossed the center of Route Y and struck another vehicle.

The driver of the 2nd vehicle, 37 year old David Roskin, of Olivette, Missouri, received serious injuries in the wreck and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

The driver of the 1st vehicle suffered minor injuries. 

MAN ARRESTED ON COCAINE AND HEROIN CHARGES IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

A Minnesota man is facing multiple drug related charges following his arrest in New Madrid County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 27 year old Patrick Burton, of St. Paul, Minnesota, was arrested Wednesday afternoon on charges of possession of a controlled substance for cocaine, heroin, and psychedelic mushrooms.

Burton is also facing charges of possession of marijuana less than 10 grams and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia. 

MASKS NOW REQUIRED AT OZARK NATIONAL SCENIC RIVERWAYS

Masks will now be required at many Ozark National Scenic Riverways Locations.

According to the National Park Service, face masks are now required in all park buildings and facilities, including the Headquarters Visitor Information Center in Van Buren.

Masks are also required on NPS-managed lands when physical distancing cannot be maintained, including narrow or busy trails and overlooks.

The new requirements come after President Joe Biden’s Executive Order on Protecting the Federal Workforce and Requiring Mask-Wearing.

THREE NEW COVID 19 RELATED DEATHS CONFIRMED IN RIPLEY COUNTY

Officials in Ripley County have confirmed that there has been multiple new Covid-19 related deaths.

According to Ripley County Health Center Director Jan Morrow, three additional residents of Ripley County who suffered from COVID-19 among other underlying conditions have died.

There have been a total of five Covid-19 related deaths this year in Ripley County.

Officials with the Carter County Health Center also say that there has been another death in Carter County from Covid-19, bringing their overall Covid-19 death total to 10.  

POPLAR BLUFF VACCINATION CLINIC TO BE HELD ON FEBRUARY 12TH

The National Guard will be back in Poplar Bluff next week to administer Covid-19 vaccinations.

According to the Butler County Health Department, the National Guard will be in Poplar Bluff on Friday, February 12th, to give the second doses of the vaccine to anyone who was vaccinated at Hydro Adventures on January 22nd or at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center on January 23rd.

Officials say that limited doses will be available for those who want their first dose.

Details on the location and time for the vaccinations, as well as registration information, will be released at a later date.

MAN ARRESTED ON COCAINE CHARGE IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 

An Illinois man was arrested Tuesday morning in Southeast Missouri on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 48 year old Michael Miller, of Herin, Illinois, was arrested at around 10:30 am in New Madrid County on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance for cocaine.

Miller is also facing charges of possession of marijuana and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia. 

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL DISTRICT SEEKING SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS

The Poplar Bluff School District is taking steps to address the substitute teacher shortage in the district.

According to school officials, during the December school board meeting, the Board of Education voted unanimously to raise guest teacher compensation from $70 to $90 per day, and $100 for retirees of the Poplar Bluff school system.

Last month, 11 substitutes were hired and the district continues to seek individuals interested in serving in the classroom when faculty members are absent.

Last week, Missouri Governor Mike Parson approved a reimbursement extension for people interested in obtaining their substitute teaching certification during the public health emergency.

High school graduates have until February 28th to complete approximately 20 hours of online training as an alternative to the standard 60-college hour requirement.

Poplar Bluff Schools will also host a substitute training class as a requirement for non-retirees to be activated in the system on March 8th and April 6th.  For more information or to fill out a substitute application packet, go to the School Administrative Building at 1110 North Westwood Boulevard in Poplar Bluff.

NEW MADRID COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENT

Route WW in New Madrid County will be closed beginning today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

The section of roadway to be closed is located between Route P and County Road 404.

Weather permitting, work will take place today and tomorrow from 8 am to 4 pm each day. 

THREE MONTH BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT UNDERWAY IN BOOTHEEL

Missouri Route 153 in Dunklin and Pemiscot Counties will be closed for around three months so contractor crews can replace the bridge over Drainage Ditch Number 84.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the closure is located between County Road 439 in Dunklin County and Route EE in Pemiscot County.

Officials say that the project is expected to be completed by Saturday, May 1st.

POPLAR BLUFF CITY COUNCIL ACCEPTS BID FOR NEW POLICE FACILITY

The Poplar Bluff City Council voted last night on an ordinance regarding the construction of a new Police Department facility.

The Council approved the ordinance, accepting a bid for the construction of the facility on Shelby Road.

During the city council meeting last night, the council also voted to end the contract between the city and Navigate Building Solutions LLC, who consulted on the project. 

MISSOURI GOVERNOR APPOINTS NEW WAYNE COUNTY PUBLIC ADMINISTRATOR 

Missouri Governor Mike Parson has announced a new public administrator for Wayne County.

On Monday, Governor Parson announced that Penny Jean Schulz, of Piedmont, has been appointed to the position.

Schulz had served as a Wayne County Assistant Public Administrator since 2019 and previously worked as a house supervisor for Down Home Women's Center in Piedmont.

MAN ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE AND ASSAULT WARRANT

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested a Benton man on a controlled substance warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 65 year old Andrew Sales Jr. was recently taken into custody on a Stoddard County warrant for possession of a controlled substance, domestic assault 3rd degree, and violation of an order of protection.

Following the arrest, Sales was booked in the Stoddard County Jail. 

DATES SET FOR POPLAR BLUFF KINDERGARTEN EARLY ENROLLMENT

Dates have been set for early enrollment at the Poplar Bluff Kindergarten Center.

School officials tell us that early enrollment for the 2021-2022 school year will be held on February 23rd through 25th, from 9 am to 2 pm, as well as from 4 pm to 7 pm on the 25th. 

Students must be five years old by July 31st, 2021 and parents should bring their child’s birth certificate, social security card, a proof of residency, and immunizations records.

NEW MADRID COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT ASKING FOR RETURN OF ROAD SIGNS 

Officials in New Madrid County are asking for the return of stolen road signs.

According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department, during the month of February anyone can turn in a road sign with no questions asked.

Beginning next month, officials say that the department will be investigating and prosecuting the thefts of these signs.

BUTLER COUNTY ROAD TO BE REDUCED TODAY FOR SHOULDER REPAIRS

Route 51 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane today so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform shoulder repairs.

According to officials, the section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route N to County Road 236.

Work is scheduled to take place today from 8 am to 3 pm.

MIRANDA FICKERT NAMED CITIZEN OF THE YEAR BY POPLAR BLUFF CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

A familiar face in Poplar Bluff has been honored as the 2020 Citizen of the Year.

Miranda Fickert was given the award during the annual Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce Banquet that was held on Saturday at the Black River Coliseum. 

During the banquet, the Chamber also gave the 2020 Ambassador of the Year Award to River Radio’s own, Nikki Leonard. 

EIGHT MONTH ROAD PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF 

An eight month road project is scheduled to begin today in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Business U.S. 60, will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction so contractor crews can perform roadside work. 

The section of roadway to be reduced is located from Westwood Boulevard to Second Street.

POPLAR BLUFF SPORTS TEAM ENSHRINED IN MISSOURI SPORTS HALL OF FAME 

A Poplar Bluff sports team is now a member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

The Poplar Bluff High School Boys Golf Program was enshrined in the Hall on Sunday as a part of the class of 2021. The Mules have won six state championships and have finished among the top four in the state 19 times, the third-most in state history.

Bill Caputo, who coached the Mules to the State Championship in 1995 and 1996, represented the program at the enshrinement. 

APPLICATIONS TO BE ACCEPTED THIS MONTH FOR RIPLEY COUNTY RENTAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM 

Beginning today, the Ripley County Public Housing Agency will be accepting applications for the Section 8 Rental assistance program.

Officials tell KWOC News that applications will be done digitally this year and the best way to submit an application is at RipleyCo.HousingManager.com.

Anyone interested in the program can also go to the Ozark Foothills Regional Planning Commission at 3019 Fair Street in Poplar Bluff to apply.

Applications will be accepted through February 28th. 

AUTHORITIES IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS ARREST MURDER SUSPECT

A man who was wanted in connection to a murder in Indiana has been apprehended in Northeast Arkansas.

According to authorities, 38 year old Gabriel Galvez, of Indianapolis, was taken into custody Saturday morning in Randolph County.

Galvez was arrested following a traffic stop near Reyno and was transported to the Randolph County Jail. 

BUTLER COUNTY TORNADO SIRENS TO BE TESTED TODAY

Don’t be surprised if you hear sirens today in Butler County.

According to the Butler County Emergency Management Office, the county’s tornado sirens are scheduled to be tested today at noon.

Officials say that the tests will be conducted every month on the first Monday.

ELLSINORE TEENAGER KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

An Ellsinore teenager has died following a single vehicle wreck in Carter County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a truck was travelling on Missouri Highway 103 Thursday afternoon when the vehicle ran off the side of the road and struck a tree.  

A 17 year old passenger in the vehicle was pronounced dead by Carter County Coroner Joe Chapman. The driver was seriously injured and transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital. 

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOLS TO KICK OFF ST. JUDE MATH-A-THON TODAY 

Poplar Bluff students will be focusing hard on math over the next two weeks to help the kids at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. 

Today marks the beginning of the St. Jude Math-A-Thon in Poplar Bluff. Students will be solving math problems and asking for pledges so they can help kids with cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

The Math-A-Thon is scheduled to continue through February 12th. 

WOMAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON FELONY DRUG AND RESISTING ARREST CHARGE

A Bell City woman is facing multiple felony charges following her arrest Thursday in Stoddard County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 32 year old Elizabeth Williams was taken into custody on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and resisting arrest.

Williams was also arrested on two Cape Girardeau warrants. Following the arrest, she was transported to the Stoddard County Jail. 

MOST SOUTHEAST MISSOURI HOMES UNINSURED IN CASE OF MAJOR EARTHQUAKE

The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance says that most residences in Southeast Missouri are uninsured for a major earthquake event.

According to the MDCI, earthquake insurance coverage has plummeted among residences in Southeast Missouri over the last 20 years. In 2000, over 60 percent of residences in the New Madrid area had earthquake insurance. By 2018, the rate of coverage had declined to just under 14 percent.

The New Madrid area experienced a series of powerful earthquakes during the winter of 1811 and 1812, with experts estimating the primary quakes ranging in magnitude from 7.0 to 7.5.

A joint assessment by the Mid-American Earthquake Center of the University of Illinois and the Federal Emergency Management Agency predicted that a major New Madrid event today could entail total economic losses of $300 billion, surpassing the highest total economic loss of any natural disaster in US history.

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR THE 2021 OPTIMIST SOCCER LEAGUE IN POPLAR BLUFF

Registration is now open for the 2021 Poplar Bluff Optimist Soccer League.

Registrations for youth in kindergarten through sixth grades will be accepted through February 26th and officials say the registration fee is $20.

DATE SET FOR ZALMA CHURCH’S ANNUAL SPECIAL NEEDS DINNER AND AUCTION

A date has been set for the Zalma General Baptist Church 15th annual special needs dinner and silent auction.

The event will be held on Saturday, March 6th at the Zalma High School Gymnasium. Both the dinner and silent auction will begin at 3:30 pm.

MISSOURI GOVERNOR ASKING FOR RETURN OF COVID-19 VACCINE FROM SOME PHARMACIES

Missouri Governor Mike Parson is asking for the return of the coronavirus vaccine from some pharmacies in the state to give a boost to the vaccine’s distribution.

According to the governor’s spokeswoman, Kelli Jones, the administration already has requested the return of 25,000 doses from CVS and Walgreens, which would then be re-routed to county health departments, medical hospitals and clinics, local pharmacies, and other state-approved vaccinators.

CVS and Walgreens were tasked with providing vaccinations at long-term care facilities, and Jones says the new plan won’t affect shots for workers and residents at those facilities.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI PRISON PLACED ON LOCKDOWN FOLLOWING ATTACK BY INMATES

A Southeast Missouri prison was placed on lockdown Tuesday following an attack by multiple inmates.

According to the Missouri Department of Corrections, a suspected 13 inmates assaulted eight staff members for about 10 minutes at the Southeast Correctional Center in Charleston.

Seven of the staff members were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

The suspected inmates were placed in administrative segregation. 

ROAD PROJECT TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation will be in Dunklin County today for repairs on Highway 53.

According to MoDOT, Highway 53 will be reduced to one lane between County Road 332 and County Road 322 near Holcomb so crews can repair the bridge over Indian Camp Slough.

Work is scheduled to take place from 7 AM to 3:30 PM.

DEXTER MAN ARRESTED ON STODDARD COUNTY WARRANT

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested a Dexter man on a warrant for multiple charges.

Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 35 year old Tony Ellis Jr. was recently arrested on a Stoddard County warrant for charges including resisting or interfering with an arrest or stop, possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, Ellis was held at the Stoddard County Jail. 

MODOT ASKING FOR PUBLIC’S INPUT ON FUTURE INTERSTATE-57 PROJECT

The Missouri Department of Transportation is asking for the public’s input on a project to convert a portion of US Route 67 to Interstate 57 in Butler County.

The Future I-57 project would include upgrading 10 miles of Route 67 to four lanes on a new alignment from the Route 160 interchange to two miles north of the Arkansas Stateline.

As a part of the planning stage, the City of Poplar Bluff and MoDOT have reevaluated the Route 67 Environmental Impact Statement from 2005. The reevaluation is available at modot.org/FutureI57.

POPLAR BLUFF CHURCH TO HOST MEAL GIVEAWAY THIS WEEKEND

A Poplar Bluff church will be hosting a meal giveaway event this weekend.

Fellowship Church will be giving out hot meals and some non-perishable food items beginning at 4:30 pm on Sunday.

Officials say that this will be a drive-thru, non contact community event.

SNOWFALL ACCUMULATION POSSIBLE THIS MORNING

Snowfall this morning could cause travel issues for some motorists in Southeast Missouri. 

According to a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by the National Weather Service, most of Southeast Missouri could get up to one inch of light snowfall this morning. 

In our northern and western counties, including Bollinger, Butler, Carter, Dunklin, Stoddard, Ripley, and Wayne, snow accumulation of up to two inches is possible. 

A Winter Weather Advisory says that snowfall rates before 9 am in these counties could lead to slick spots on area roads. 

MISSOURI GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES NEW COVID-19 VACCINATION DASHBOARD

Missouri residents wanting to learn more about vaccination efforts in the state have a new way of finding information. 

On Tuesday, Missouri Governor Mike Parson announced the launch of a new COVID-19 vaccination dashboard containing Missouri-specific data submitted by providers from across the state.

The interactive dashboard includes total doses administered and also distinguishes the number of individuals who have received one dose or both doses. 

Additionally, those who live in Missouri and have received at least one dose are also captured in a county-level vaccination table. This shows how many residents have received a dose per reported county of residence.

The vaccination dashboard is available at MOStopsCovid.com.

MASS VACCINATION CLINIC TO BE HELD NEXT WEEK IN CARUTHERSVILLE 

A Covid-19 Mass Vaccination Clinic is scheduled for early February in the Missouri Bootheel.

According to the Pemiscot County Health Center, the clinic will be from 9 am to 4 pm on Friday, February 5th at Century Casino in Caruthersville. 

Officials say that registration for the event will not be available until February 1st. More information about registering and traffic flow at the clinic site will be available closer to the event date.

TRAIN DEPOT FUNDRAISER TO START FRIDAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

A fundraiser for the restoration of a Poplar Bluff landmark is set to begin on Friday.

The Train Depot Rummage and Consignment sale has been scheduled for 8 am to noon on both Friday and Saturday at the Iron Mountain Train Depot on South Main Street.

The fundraiser is being held for further restorations of the 1910 Depot.

COSMETOLOGY PROGRAM ENROLLMENT OPEN AT POPLAR BLUFF TECHNICAL CAREER CENTER

The Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center is looking for students to fill their esthetics and barbering programs. 

School officials tell KWOC news that federal funding was utilized in the past few years to renovate the Career Center’s salon, replacing the flooring, installing new shampoo bowls, and creating space for barbering stations. 

Several esthetician rooms were also constructed in the building, allowing the revamped program to become available again for adult students at the time.

Officials say that enrollment for the one-year barbering and esthetician programs will remain open through March.

FOREST SERVICE SEEKING TRAIL VOLUNTEERS FOR MARK TWAIN NATIONAL FOREST

The United States Forest Service is looking for volunteers to assist this year at Mark Twain National Forest. 

Forest Service officials tell KWOC News that Trail crew members will work under the direction of Forest Service staff to construct and maintain non-motorized trails, install signs, maintain trailheads and support management of other recreation facilities on the Poplar Bluff and Eleven Point Ranger Districts. 

The forest service is seeking three volunteers for a minimum of eight hours a week.

COVID-19 DEATH TOTAL UP TO TWENTY-SIX IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Multiple new Covid-19 deaths have been reported in Dunklin County.

The Dunklin County Health Department announced Monday that there have been a total of 26 Covid-19 deaths in the county, an increase of 8 from the total reported on January 22nd. Officials say there are 33 active cases in the county.

The Butler County Health Department tells KWOC News that there have been 88 new cases since January 20th in Butler County.

In Stoddard County, health officials reported 14 new cases on Monday and five over the weekend, bringing the active total to 79 cases.  

AREA MAN FOUND DEAD MONDAY MORNING IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

Authorities in Southeast Missouri are investigating the death of an Hayti man.

According to Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell, the body of 45 year old Lamont Harris was found early Monday morning on the side of the road in the area of US Highway 412 and County Road 281.

The investigation into the death is ongoing and an autopsy will be conducted.  

POPLAR BLUFF MULES BASKETBALL TO BE STREAMED LIVE TONIGHT ON KWOC FACEBOOK PAGE

Poplar Bluff Mules supporters will get the chance to watch tonight’s game live from their homes.

Poplar Bluff Athletic Director Kent Keith announced Monday that the Mules basketball game against Kennett will be streamed live on the Today’s Talk KWOC Facebook page.

The stream is scheduled to begin tonight at 7 pm and Keith tells us that they hope to stream more games in the future.  

HEAVY STORMS BRING MINOR FLOODING MONDAY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A string of heavy storms crossed Southeast Missouri Monday morning bringing with it minor flooding in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service, the rain started overnight and almost two inches of rain was measured in Butler County at around 6 AM.

In Carter County, water was reported over a couple of streets in Van Buren. Shortly after 5 pm a total of 4.79 inches of rain was measured in Stoddard County.

The weather did cause a disruption for some area students as the Twin Rivers School District dismissed early on Monday due to flooding.  

HEARING SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF TO DISCUSS GRANT APPLICATION

A public hearing is scheduled for this week in Poplar Bluff to discuss the city’s application for a recreational trails grant.

The Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation Department is proposing to apply for approximately 250 Thousand Dollars in funding from the 2021 Missouri Department of Natural Resources Recreational Trails Program.

Officials say the proposal is to construct an extension of the city’s trail along the north side of PP Highway from Lurlyn Road to Highway 67.

VETERANS FOOD PANTRY SET FOR WEDNESDAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

The John J. Pershing VA Medical Center is hosting a food pantry for veterans tomorrow in Poplar Bluff.

The “Veterans Healthy Food Surplus” drive through food pantry will begin at 9 am Wednesday at the National Guard Armory on Cravens Road.

The distribution will take place on a first come, first served basis and interested veterans do not need to sign up beforehand. Veterans who attend are being asked to bring an identification card.

Officials say that the food pantries will be available on the fourth Wednesday of each month and that they may now be able to serve up to 80 veterans.

INCOMING STORM SYSTEM BRINGS WITH IT CHANCE OF HEAVY RAINFALL

An incoming storm system is bringing with it the chance of heavy rainfall. 

According to a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by the National Weather Service, thunderstorms are possible with increasing rain chances today and tonight. 

Heavy rainfall will be the primary storm related hazard through the period. Weather officials say up to two and a half inches of rain is likely with this storm system, along with isolated flooding being a concern. 

The chances of light to moderate rainfall are also expected on Wednesday. 

TWO ST. LOUIS MEN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

Authorities in the Missouri Bootheel arrested two men over the weekend on multiple felony charges. 

According to the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Department, 32 year old Deandre Spears, and 30 year old Reginald Jackson, both of St. Louis, were taken into custody Sunday night on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance for ecstasy pills and possession of methamphetamine. 

Both are also facing a charge of possession of marijuana. 

Following their arrest, both Spears and Jackson were taken to the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office. 

PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT SET TO CAUSE DELAYS OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS IN BUTLER COUNTY

Business 60 in Butler County will be reduced with a 12-foot width restriction over the next few months as contractor crews perform roadside work. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of roadway involved is located from Business U.S. 60/67 to Second Street. 

Weather permitting, work will take place beginning on Monday February 1st through Friday October 1st from 6 am to 6 pm daily.

COURTHOUSES IN BUTLER AND RIPLEY COUNTIES MOVE BACK TO PHASE TWO THIS WEDNESDAY

Courthouses in Butler and Ripley Counties will move back to phase two beginning this Wednesday. 

According to Presiding Circuit Judge Michael Pritchett, the courts, which reverted to operating phase one in early November, will now move back to Phase Two, after seeing the number of positive cases substantially decreasing on a weekly average over the past four weeks. 

Under phase two, it allows the courts to increase the numbers of individuals in the courtroom to a total of 25, although that is the maximum number allowed and is not required.

The courts will remain under phase two until further notice, and the situation will continue to be monitored. 

DRIVER EXAMINATION STATIONS SCHEDULED TO CLOSE

Driver examination stations throughout Missouri are scheduled for closing. 

The Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that the stations will close on February 12th for Lincoln’s Birthday, and again on February 17th for Washington’s Birthday. The stations will resume operations on February 15th and February 18th.

CHAFFEE MAN INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

 A Chaffee man was injured over the weekend in a single vehicle wreck. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 56 year old Sherman Vessells was driving on US Highway 60 in New Madrid County when his vehicle ran off the left side of the road, crossed the median, and struck a guardrail. 

Officials say the wreck occurred one mile west of Sikeston at around 2:30 am on Saturday. 

Vessells suffered moderate injuries in the wreck and was transported by ambulance to an area hospital.
