Warning Coordination Meteorologist Rick Shanklin with the National Weather Service in Paducah tells KWOC News that an Excessive Heat Watch will be in effect beginning on Thursday.

An excessive heat watch means that a prolonged period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of high temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are possible if precautions aren't taken. We're expecting high temperatures in the mid-90s, low temperatures only falling off into the mid-70s, all the way through the weekend and that combination will produce indices from around 105 to 110 degrees each afternoon from Thursday and all the way through the weekend. Some things to keep in mind to stay safe during this period of excessive heat are to drink plenty of fluids. Stay in an air-conditioned room if possible, certainly stay out of the sun. And don't forget to check up on relatives and neighbors, especially the elderly. And also those pets be sure they had plenty of shade or brought inside and that they have plenty of water to drink as well.

Shanklin says that the Excessive Heat Watch will currently be in effect from Thursday afternoon through Sunday evening.
