CHARGES AMENDED FOR MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING JULY SHOOTING IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

  Charges have been amended for a man who was arrested following a shooting earlier this year in Dunklin County.

According to authorities, 19 year old Andre Oliver, of Kennett, was arrested in July in connection to the shooting death of 19 year old Akeem Nelson, also of Kennett.

At the time, Oliver was arrested on a charge of 2nd degree murder.

According to Missouri Case Net, an amended affidavit was filed Monday which amended the count to the class A felony of murder in the 1st degree.

 

  WOMAN ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WARRANT

  A woman has been taken into custody in Stoddard County on a controlled substance warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 34 year old Erin Nicole Higgins was recently arrested on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance and stealing.

Officials say that Higgins bond was set at $7,500 and she remained in jail as of this morning.

 

  CENTER STAGE TO OPEN UP NEW SEASON TOMORROW NIGHT

  Center Stage, a Three Rivers College and community theater group, will be opening up their new season tomorrow night at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

The group will be performing “Once Upon a Mattress,” a comedic retelling of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Princess and the Pea.

Robert Abney, Director of the Tinnin Fine Arts Center, described the show as fun, whimsical, and good for the whole family.

Performances will be held at 7 pm on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday as well as 2 pm on Sunday. Tickets are $10, or $5 with a TRC ID.

 

  POPLAR BLUFF CHURCH TO HOST FALL FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND

  A Poplar Bluff church will be hosting a fall festival this weekend.

The 2017 Annual Fall Festival sponsored by the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church and Women’s Mission Ministry will be held from 7 am to 3 pm this Saturday at the Pleasant Hill Family Center.

There will be multiple food options at the festival including breakfast sandwiches, hamburgers, and homemade baked goods and vegetable soup.

The Pleasant Hill Family Center is located at 1116 Garfield Street.

 

  FOUR TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON DRUG CHARGES IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

  Multiple people were recently taken into custody in Northeast Arkansas on drug charges.

According to Greene County Sheriff David Carter, deputies recently arrested John Causey, Ronald Roush, and Wesley Childers for possession of crystal methamphetamine.

Carter says that deputies also arrested Phyllis Mullins for possession of a controlled substance. It was not released if the arrests were connected to each other.

 

  PEMISCOT COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR PIPE REPLACEMENT

  Route O in Pemiscot County will be closed today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a pipe under the roadway.

Officials say that the section of roadway to be closed is located between County Roads 555 and 559.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 am to 3:30 pm.

SHOOTING LEAVES ONE DEAD IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

  A shooting in New Madrid County over the weekend has resulted in one death and multiple injuries.

According to authorities, the incident occurred Sunday in Lilbourn.

Corey Rowe Jr. died from injuries he received in the shooting while two other men were injured and transported to a hospital in Memphis.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

 

  REYNOLDS COUNTY PROSECUTOR SAYS HE WILL SEEK THE DEATH PENALTY FOR TWO ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO DEADLY SHOOTING

  The death penalty is being brought up for two men who have been arrested following the shooting deaths of two people in Reynolds County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 67 year old David Young, of Ironton, and 44 year old Timothy Callahan, of Farmington, were arrested Saturday in connection to the shooting deaths of James and Janet Nance on October 18th near Ellington.

A third victim in the shooting is recovering from wounds she sustained during the attack.

Both Young and Callahan were charged Saturday with two counts each of first-degree murder. Both men are also facing additional charges of armed criminal action, robbery, and assault.

Reynolds County prosecutor Michael Randazzo said in an interview Monday that he will seek the death penalty.

 

  RETIRED NASA OFFICIAL TO SERVE AS BUTLER COUNTY CYBER AND TECHNOLOGY CHAMPION

  Butler County Commissioners have unanimously appointed a retired senior NASA official as the Butler County Cyber and Technology Champion.

According to the Butler County Emergency Management Agency, Phillip A. Bounds will serve in a voluntary capacity for Butler County and will promote multiple technology related efforts, including information sharing, critical infrastructure protection, vulnerability assessments, policy planning and procedures.

Bounds will also leverage technology to enhance the community and citizens of Butler County, advise county leadership and the Emergency Management Agency, and serve as the internal and external county representative for cybersecurity, cyber and technology preparedness, and collaboration.

 

  PIEDMONT MAN ARRESTED ON METH CHARGE IN WAYNE COUNTY

  Authorities in Wayne County have arrested an area man on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 50 year old Gale Smith, of Piedmont, was arrested Monday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

He is also facing a charge of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

Following his arrest, Smith was held at the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

 

  MODOT TO CONDUCT STATEWIDE DRILL THIS WEEK

  Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation say that motorists should not be surprised if they see an increase in MODOT vehicles on roadways later this week.

MoDOT will hold a statewide drill on Thursday to test crews’ readiness for the upcoming winter months.

During the drill, MoDOT employees will react to a simulated forecast of significant snow for the entire state. The department’s emergency operations centers will activate and maintenance employees will be deployed to MoDOT’s 1,500 trucks. Emergency communications systems will also be tested.

Officials say that motorists may notice increased numbers of MoDOT vehicles on state routes during the drill. In rural areas, crews will deploy after 8 am, while in urban areas, the drill will not begin until after 9 am. The exercise should be completed by 3 pm.

 

  RECTOR WINS ARKANSAS STATE MARCHING BAND CHAMPIONSHIP

  A marching band from Northeast Arkansas has won a state championship.

The Rector High School Marching Cougars won the Arkansas State Marching Band Contest in Class 1A on Monday.

The competition was held at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock.

ARRESTS MADE IN REYNOLDS COUNTY SHOOTINGAuthorities in Ellington say that two men have been arrested in Ohio, in connection to the double homicide that took place in Reynolds County on October 18th.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 86 year old James Nance and his wife, 72 year old Janet Nance, both of Ellington, died from injuries sustained from the incident. A third victim, a 73-year- old female, is recovering from wounds she sustained during the attack.

Information devolved during the investigation, which led investigators to a motel in Deerfield Township, Ohio, where two men were taken into custody without incident. They are identified as 44 year old Timothy Callahan, of Farmington, and 67 year old David Young, of Ironton. Both men are facing charges in Reynolds County for murder 1st degree.

They are each being held without bond and extradition proceedings are underway in the state of Ohio.

 

ALMOST THREE MONTH LONG BRIDGE PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY Route K in Stoddard County will be closed for almost three months beginning today so contractor crews can replace a bridge.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the bridge is located over the Castor River between County Road 267 and Route V.

Weather permitting, work will begin today with the bridge expected to re-open on Tuesday, January 23rd.

 

9TH ANNUAL HOWLING AT THE MOON SCHEUDLED FOR FRIDAY NIGHT The Animal Welfare Alliance of Southeast Missouri is preparing for their upcoming benefit on Friday.

“Howling at the Moon,” the 9th annual fall benefit for the AWA is scheduled for 6 to 10 pm Friday night at the Westwood Center in Poplar Bluff.

Tickets will be available at the door with proceeds going towards building a no-kill animal shelter. There will be catering provided by Mayas and live entertainment by “Thin Blue Line” at the event.

MISSOURI HIGHLANDS MEDICAL CLINIC HOSTING HALLOWEEN EVENT TONIGHT An area business will be hosting a free Halloween event tonight.

Missouri Highlands Medical Clinic will be holding a “Haunted Hallway” tonight from 5 to 7 pm. Organizers say that all ages are welcome to the event.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS FROM THE POPLAR BLUFF POLICE DEPARTMENT Halloween is coming up tomorrow and Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whiteley has some tips to help keep your child safe while trick or treating tomorrow tonight.

Chief Whiteley says parents should establish a route for children, making sure they stay within familiar areas and surroundings. An adult should accompany young children. Parents should also remind kids not to enter strangers' homes or cars, and to avoid homes without an outside light on.

Be sure to tell your children to not eat treats until they get home and remember to inspect all treats before allowing your kids to eat them.

 

POPLAR BLUFF MAN IN CUSTODY ON SEXUAL MISCONDUCT AND WEAPON WARRANT A Poplar Bluff man is in custody this morning on a sexual misconduct warrant.

According to the Ripley County Sheriff’s Department, 46 year old Jason Graves was recently arrested on a warrant for felony possession of a firearm and felony defacing a firearm.

Officials say that Jones remains in jail as of this morning with no bond warrants.

 

WESTBOUND US 60 TO BE REDUCED BEGINNING TODAY IN CARTER COUNTY Westbound US 60 in Carter County will be reduced to one lane with a 16-foot width restriction beginning today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform concrete repairs.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 am to 4 pm, daily through Friday, November 10.

MoDOT officials say that the work zone, located from Route M to Route C, may be set-up for 24-hours a day.

 

DES ARC COMMUNITY CENTER TO HOST CHILI SUPPER AND BAKE SALE THIS WEEKEND The Des Arc Community Center will be hosting a chili supper and bake sale this weekend.

Jackie Brandmeyer, Chairperson of the Community Center tells us that the event will be held from 3 to 7 pm on Saturday and will be all you can eat for a donation.

Brandmeyer says that all proceeds will go to support the utility and insurance fund for the building.

POPLAR BLUFF MULES TO TAKE ON JACKSON INDIANS IN DISTRICT SEMI-FINAL TONIGHT

  The undefeated Poplar Bluff Mules will be taking on the Jackson Indians tonight with a chance to go to the district finals on the line.

The Class 5, District 1 semi-final between the Mules and the Indians will kick off at 7 pm at the Mules Football Stadium here in Poplar Bluff.

Because this is a MSHSAA Semifinal Playoff Game, admission is $7.00. Booster Passes, Skybox Tickets, Field Box Tickets, Reserved Seat Tickets, Letterman Cards, and Employee/Staff Sign-in Sheets will not be honored. Skybox, Field Box and Reserved Seat holders will be allowed to sit in their normal seat, but they must pay $7.00 to get in the game

KWOC News spoke with Poplar Bluff Superintendent Scott Dill about the parking situation for tonight’s game.

“We’re expecting a large crowd with the 7 p.m. kickoff featuring our undefeated Poplar Bluff Mules versus the Jackson Indians. Now we would appreciate if as many fans as possible could carpool to this game to make maximum use of our parking lot spaces.

And this will free up spaces for our friends from Jackson as well that are coming over.   ONE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WRECK NEAR DONIPHAN

  A Doniphan man was injured Thursday in a single vehicle wreck in Ripley County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the wreck occurred shortly before 8 pm last night, around 9 miles west of Doniphan. 29 year old William Broyles was driving on US 160 when his vehicle ran off the side of the road and overturned.

Broyles, who was ejected during the wreck, suffered serious injuries and was flown to a Memphis hospital.

 

  YOUTH FIREARMS DEER SEASON TO BEGIN THIS WEEKEND

  Young hunters will be out in the woods this weekend for youth firearms deer season.

The season is set to run on October 28th and 29th. Harvest hours are one half hour before sunrise to one half hour after sunset.

Hunters must be at least 6 and no older than 15 on Saturday to participate. Additional regulations and permits are available online at the Missouri Department of Conservation website.

 

  POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL SEEKING PICTURES OF VETERANS FOR UPCOMING CEREMONY

  Officials at Poplar Bluff Middle School are looking for pictures of veterans for an upcoming ceremony.

The school will be celebrating Veterans Day with a community program on Friday, November 10th at 9 am. Before and after the program, a video will be shown with photos of family members of Middle School students who have served in the military.

Anyone who would like a picture included in the ceremony should email the picture, along with the person’s name, branch, rank, dates of service, the student they are related to, and how they are related to LaurenHasanov@pb.k12.mo.us.

Officials are asking that pictures be sent in by November 3rd to make sure they are included in the video.

 

  MOTORISTS ADVISED TO BE ON GUARD FOR FARM VEHICLES

  Many farms across Missouri are in the process of harvesting their crops and officials say this means an increase in farm equipment using and crossing state roadways.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, farm equipment vehicles were involved in 582 crashes from 2014 through 2016. These crashes resulted in 17 people being killed and 199 being injured.

Motorists are advised to slow down when approaching farm vehicles and to be patient as the farm vehicles travel to their field entrances. In passing zones, wait until it is safe and pass at a safe distance and speed.

 

  MAN ARRESTED IN NEW MADRID COUNTY ON FELONY METH CHARGE

  Authorities in New Madrid County arrested a man Thursday morning on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 32 year old David Babb, of Lilbourn, was taken into custody on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Babb is also facing a felony charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

UP TO $10,000 REWARD OFFERED FOR INFORMATION ABOUT FIREARMS THEFT IN NORTHEAST ARKANSASA reward is being offered by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives for information about a theft in Northeast Arkansas.

The up to $10,000 reward is for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the burglary and theft of firearms from M & M Farm & Lumber in Maynard.

ATF Officials tell KWOC News that on October 15th an unknown suspect or suspects forced entry into, and burglarized the business, stealing numerous firearms.

The ongoing criminal investigation is being conducted by ATF and the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with information about the incident should contact ATF at 1-800-ATF-GUNS, or the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office 870-892-8888.

 

WOMAN ON A SCOOTER HIT BY A VEHICLE IN DEXTER An investigation is underway in Stoddard County following a reported hit and run.

According to authorities, a woman on a scooter was hit by a vehicle Tuesday night on One Mile Road. The vehicle then left the area. The incident occurred at around 9:30 pm.

The woman was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital and her current condition was not available.

 

COMMUNITY TOY DRIVE SCHEDUELD FOR THIS WEEKEND IN CAMPBELL A Community Toy Drive is scheduled for this weekend in Campbell.

The event will be held on Saturday at 6 pm at the Campbell Community Center. In addition to the BBQ and silent auction, there will also be a performance by the Justin Heskett Band.

Tickets are $20 with all proceeds being donated to the Campbell Fire Department Toy Drive.

 

MAN FOUND WITH OVER 800 POUNDS OF MARIJAUNA IN CARTER COUNTY SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS IN PRISON An Illinois man who was found with over 800 pounds of marijuana in Southeast Missouri last year has been sentenced to two decades in prison.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 58 year old Lowell Johnson, of Metropolis, Illinois, was pulled over for speeding last November in Carter County.

Officers searched Johnson's truck after noticing a strong odor of marijuana and discovered 850 pounds of marijuana, 12 pounds of methamphetamine, and over two pounds of cocaine.

Johnson reportedly told investigators that he intended to distribute the controlled substances in the Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois areas.

On Tuesday Johnson was sentenced to 20 years in prison on federal drug charges by United States District Judge Stephen Limbaugh, Jr.

 

KENNETT MAN FLOWN TO AREA HOSPITAL FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK A Kennett man was flown to an area hospital Wednesday following a single vehicle wreck.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred at around 8:40 pm on County Road 443 in Pemiscot County. A vehicle, driven by 63 year old Larry Payne, of Gobler, reportedly failed to stop at a T intersection and struck a ditch.

A passenger in the vehicle, 68 year old Rickie Morgan, of Kennett suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital. Another passenger received moderate injuries.

 

SOME BUTLER COUNTY RESIDENTS UNDER BOIL WATER ORDER Some residents in Butler County are currently under a boil water order.

The order was announced yesterday for Butler County Public Water Supply District #2. Officials say that the district is investigating the distribution system and storage tank to determine possible causes for the unsafe samples.

The district has installed emergency disinfection, is flushing the distribution system, and will be collecting additional samples.

POPLAR BLUFF KINDERGARTEN CENTER TO HOLD ANNUAL FALL FESTIVAL TONIGHT The Poplar Bluff Kindergarten Center will be hosting its annual fall festival tonight.

School officials say the festival will be held tonight from 5 to 7 pm.

There will be food, games, a bounce house, and silent auction at the event.

DEXTER MAN ARRESTED ON WARRANT FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND STATUTORY RAPEAuthorities in Stoddard County say that a Dexter man has been taken into custody on a warrant for multiple charges, including statutory rape.

Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 36 year old Doyle Fulkerson was recently arrested on a warrant for a probation violation, promoting child pornography, enticement of a child, and statutory rape.

His total bond was set at $50,000 and officials say he remained in jail as of this morning.

 

OPENING DATE ANNOUNCED FOR 25TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS AUTO TOUR The opening date has been announced for the 25th Annual Festival of Lights Auto Tour.

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the auto tour will open on November 24th at the Redman Creek Campground at Wappapello Lake.

The final day for the tour will be December 30th. Officials say that sites are still available, free of charge. For more information, contact the Wappapello Lake Management Office at 573-222-8562.

 

POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS PREPARING FOR FOUR DAY WEEKEND Students in Poplar Bluff are getting ready for a four day weekend.

Poplar Bluff R-1 School District Superintendent Scott Dill tells us that schools in the district will dismiss on Thursday for a teacher collaboration day. Schools will also not be in session on Friday.

Dill says that the regular class schedule will resume on Monday, October 30th.

 

TWO FUGITIVES ARRESTED IN CLAY COUNTY ARKANSAS Two fugitives have been apprehended in Northeast Arkansas.

Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller tells KWOC News that on Tuesday deputies with the sheriff's department, along with deputies with the Greene County Sheriff's Department's SWAT team executed a search warrant at a residence located on County Road 434.

During the search, deputies apprehended two fugitives wanted out of Greene County, Dusty Emery and Josh Burleson. Miller says that a large amount of marijuana and miscellaneous drug paraphernalia was also recovered.

Deputies also made three other arrests for various charges. The three other people arrested were identified as Kendall Oliver, Cassie Bassett, and Elizabeth Lucas.

CORNING HARVEST FESTIVAL SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND The Corning Harvest Festival is scheduled for this weekend.

The festival will be held from 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday at Wynn Park. There will be multiple exhibits, including arts and crafts, antique cars and machinery, as well as commercial exhibits.

There will also be a 5k-run and live entertainment. Admission to the festival is free.

2ND PERSON DIES IN CONNECTION TO REYNOLDS COUNTY SHOOTING Updating a story we brought to you last week, a second person has died from injuries they received in a shooting last week in Reynolds County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 86 year old James Nance, of Ellington, died on Saturday. Nance was one of three people shot during the incident on October 18th.

Nance’s wife, 72 year old Janet Nance, was another one of the victims and died that day at a St. Louis hospital. The third victim, a 73-year- old female, is recovering from wounds she sustained in the incident.

The investigation is ongoing and being handled by investigators with the Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control and members of the Reynolds County Sheriff’s Department.

MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING PURSUIT IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A man allegedly drove through a parking lot where children were playing during a pursuit with authorities in Northeast Arkansas.

Greene County Sheriff David Carter tells KWOC News that deputies were involved in a multi street pursuit while trying to stop a vehicle for erratic driving.

Carter says that the driver, identified as Anthony Oliver, fled from deputies, driving up and down numerous streets, across several back yards, side swiped a deputy’s patrol vehicle, and drove across a parking lot where children were playing.

At that point a Deputy pulled in front of the fleeing vehicle to stop him and another Deputy blocked the vehicle from behind.

Oliver was then taken into custody.

 

POPLAR BLUFF ELEMENARY STUDENTS RAISE HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS FOR ST. JUDE CHILDREN’S RESEARCH HOSPITAL

Students at O’Neal Elementary School in Poplar Bluff have raised over $750 dollars for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by decorating pumpkins.

Pumkinpalooza, an annual tradition of the elementary school, sees third graders decorate the pumpkins in the likeness of their favorite storybook character. Pumpkins get judged by school officials, patrons and fellow students, and donations are collected.

This year's 'best of show' winner was Hope Morse, who raised $116.20 for her "Trolls"-inspired pumpkin.

Prize money was given to the top winners in each category, courtesy of Poplar Bluff Realty.

 

MISSOURI OPIOID SUMMIT MEETING TO BE HELD TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

A summit concerning Opioids is being held this morning in Poplar Bluff.

The Missouri Opioid Summit is scheduled for 8:30 am to noon today at Mount Calvary Powerhouse Church.

Some of the things to be discussed at the summit include the state of the state for law enforcement and heroin as well as awareness and prevention.

There will also be an address from legislators during the event. Officials say that tickets for the summit have sold out.

This is the fourth in a series of nine summits held across the state by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

 

RICK ANKIEL ANNOUNCED AS SPEAKER FOR UPCOMING BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB EVENT

A former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher and outfielder has been announced as the speaker for the upcoming 6th Annual Steak and Burger event.

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN ARRESTED ON FELONY DRUG CHARGE

A Poplar Bluff woman has been taken into custody in Butler County on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 26 year old Michelle Odle was arrested Monday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine.

Odle also reportedly had a felony probation parole warrant. Following the arrest, she was held at the Butler County Jail.

REWARD OFFERED FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO THE CAPTURE OF ESCAPED INMATES Continuing to follow a story for you, officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol say that a reward is still being offered for information regarding two inmates who escaped from a Southeast Missouri jail last week.

Sergeant Clark Parrott tells KWOC News that on Sunday October 17, Joseph Latamondeer and William Carter escaped from the Pemiscot County Justice Center in Caruthersville.

Carter is facing two counts of murder - 1st degree. Latamondeer has pled guilty to and was awaiting sentencing for domestic assault - 1st degree.

Parrott says that a $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and apprehension of the two escaped prisoners.

POPLAR BLUFF ROAD TO CLOSE TODAY FOR CONSTRUCTION OF PHASE TWO OF SHELBY ROAD A Poplar Bluff road will be closing beginning today for construction to begin on phase two of Shelby Road.

Poplar Bluff City officials tell KWOC News that Roxie Road will be closed to thru traffic for the project.

Officials say that the length of the closure is unknown at this time but contractors will be working diligently to reopen up the roadway to full traffic as soon as possible.

 

FIRE DEPARTMENT TO HOST CHILI SUPPER AND AUCTION The Highway K Volunteer Fire Department of Doniphan has announced they will be hosting a Chili Supper and Auction on November 4th.

The supper will begin at 6 pm at the fire station, a half mile east of 21 North and K Highway.

There will also be baked goods and donated items available for purchase as well as a raffle of four tires.

100 percent of the proceeds will go to the Highway K Volunteer Fire Department.

 

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE DEPARTMENT TO HOST DRUG TAKE BACK EVENT Poplar Bluff residents will have a chance to safely dispose of their unused, unwanted, or expired prescription drugs this weekend.

The Poplar Bluff Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration will be holding a Drug Take Back event on Saturday, October 28th from 10 am to 2 pm at the Poplar Bluff Police Station.

The service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked. Officials say that the DEA cannot accept needles or sharps, only pills or patches.

 

SOUTHBOUND ROUTE 67 TO BE REDUCED TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY Southbound Route 67 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform pavement repairs.

The work zone is located from County Road 272 to County Road 274.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 am to 5 pm.

 

CONCRETE REPAIR PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN CARTER COUNTY Westbound US 60 in Carter County will be reduced to one lane with a 16-foot width restriction beginning today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform concrete repairs.

The work zone is located from Route J to one mile west of Route Y near County Road 163.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday from 6:30 am to 5 pm daily, however officials say that the work zone may be set-up for 24-hours a day.

NAME RELEASED OF VICTIM KILLED IN ELLINGTON SHOOTING

  Authorities have released the name of the person that died following a shooting in Reynolds County on Wednesday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, three people were shot at a residence located west of Ellington. One of the victims, 72 year old Janet Nance, of Ellington, later died at a St. Louis hospital.

The other two victims, an 86 year old male and a 73 year old female, have been hospitalized.

A suspect vehicle in the case was described as a blue mid-size sedan possibly occupied by two white males.

Anyone with information about the shooting is being asked to call the Reynolds County Sheriff’s Department at 573-648-2491.

 

  10 YEAR OLD GIRL SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WRECK NEAR SIKESTON

  A child from Sikeston was seriously injured in a wreck Thursday.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the wreck occurred at around 1 pm when a vehicle turned into the path of another vehicle on Highway 60 in New Madrid County.

A 10 year old girl in the second vehicle received serious injuries in the wreck and was transported to an area hospital. The driver of the second vehicle received minor injuries and no injuries were listed for the driver of the first vehicle.

 

  TODAY IS THE 8TH ANNUAL BUTLER COUNTY COMMUNITY OUTREACH DAY

  Today is the 8th annual Community Outreach Day in Poplar Bluff.

The event, presented by the Poplar Bluff Community Outreach Coalition, is a one stop shop where individuals and families in need can have access to services and assistance.

  Two county officials from Southeast Missouri were in Washington D.C. this week for a series of meetings at the White House.

Carter County Sheriff Richard Stephens and Carter County Clerk Leona Stephens attended the meetings with numerous senior staff and administrative members.

Sheriff Stephens says they discussed major issues facing the county’s citizens during the meetings.

 

  OFFICIALS IN MARBLE HILL REPORTING SCAM PHONE CALLS CLAIMING TO COME FROM BOLLINGER COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT

  Officials in Bollinger County are warning residents to be on guard for a possible scam phone call.

According to the Marble Hill Police Department, persons are contacting residents of Marble Hill, pretending to be health office employees, and requesting personal information.

If you receive a telephone call from a person claiming to represent the Bollinger County Health Office and are asked any personal information, contact the health office yourself and verify that the call was genuine.

ONE DEAD IN CONNECTION TO SHOOTING NEAR ELLINGTON Three people were shot and one has died following an incident last night near Ellington.

According to authorities, two females and one male were shot. One of the females has died at a St. Louis hospital.

The names of the victims have not been released.

Authorities are reportedly searching for two males in connection to the shooting.

HAYTI MAN FACING FELONY CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE CHARGE OUT OF PEMISCOT COUNTY A Hayti man is facing a felony controlled substance charge out of Pemiscot County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 50 year old David Palmer was taken into custody shortly before 6 pm Wednesday on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance.

Officials say that Palmer was held at the Pemiscot County Jail following the arrest.

 

STATE AUDITOR CAUTIONS OF LACK OF OVERSIGHT IN NEW MADRID COUNTY GOVERNMENT A state audit has been completed on the New Madrid County government and officials say there are some areas that could use improvement.

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway released the regularly scheduled audit of New Madrid County earlier this week. The audit, which received an overall rating of good, found several areas within county government where oversight could be improved.

A need for improved oversight within the property tax system, sheriff's office, and prosecuting attorney's office was identified in the report. Recommendations include having a secondary review of financial transactions or making sure the same individual is not responsible for all financial activity.

Galloway says that New Madrid County officials have pledged to address these concerns.

 

RIPLEY COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR PIPE REPLACEMENT Route H in Ripley County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a pipe under the roadway.

According to MoDOT, crews will be on site today from 8 am to 2 pm and the work zone will be located between County Road H-9A and the end of Route H.

 

1.7 MILLION DOLLAR GIFT TO GO TO SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SIKESTON STUDENTS A 1.7 million dollar gift will go to provide scholarships for students from Sikeston High School.

The gift was made to the Sikeston Public Schools Foundation from the estate of Bob Depro, who taught for over 30 years in Sikeston and also called Sikeston Bulldogs sporting events. He died in December of last year.

The money will go to the establishment of the Bob Depro Scholarship Fund.

ENDANGERED SILVER ADVISORY ISSUED FOR MISSING WOMAN

  An endangered silver advisory has been issued for a missing woman out of Pemiscot County.

The advisory was issued by the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department for 69 year old Ruth Beals.

Beals is described as a white female, 5 foot 2 inches tall, weighing 175 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes.

Officials say that Beals is an insulin dependent diabetic who has also been having some mental issues lately.

Her vehicle is a dark blue 2011 Dodge Caravan bearing a Missouri license plate of BX 85B. The vehicle was last seen at 385 State Highway D in Caruthersville.

Anyone with information about Beals’ whereabouts should immediately dial 911 to contact your nearest law enforcement agency or call the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department at 573-333-4101.

 

  POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL ROLLING OUT NEW PROGRAM THIS WEEK FOR DISMISSALS

  The Poplar Bluff Middle School is rolling out a new program for school dismissal time this week.

According to a post on the Poplar Bluff Middle School Facebook page, the program, KidAccount will help keep kids safe and get them inside and off the sidewalk during parent pick up.

In the post, Middle School president Brad Owings says that parents will be issued a card with a bar code that will need to be scanned by a staff member before the child can be picked up.

The student’s name will then appear on a screen inside the school’s holding room so students can then head out to the pick up area. You will need your KidAccount card as well as an ID to pick up a student.

Families will be issued two cards per student and more can be purchased as needed. Anyone picking up a student without a card must go to the office, show a photo ID, and be on the approved pick up list for that student.

Parents will need to report any changes to their child’s afternoon pick up by 2 pm and parents must call the office or send a note. If a child is going home with a friend, the school will need a bus number or address.

  STARS AND STRIPES MUSEUM TO HOST LIBERTY DAYS EVENT THIS WEEKEND

 

  The Stars and Stripes Museum in Bloomfield will be hosting a liberty days event this weekend.

The event will be held from 9 am to 6 pm on Saturday. There will be a living history village featuring encampments from the 1700s to present, pageants, a talent show, a cannon demonstration, and entertainment.

There will also a Liberty Days parade on Friday from the Bloomfield High School to the Bloomfield City Park beginning at 5:30 pm.

  BLOOMFIELD MAN ARRESTED ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE AND ASSAULT WARRANTS

  A Bloomfield man has been taken into custody in Stoddard County on controlled substance and assault warrants.

Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 45 year old Darren Hatley was recently arrested on warrants for possession of a controlled substance, 4th degree assault, and resisting or interfering with a felony arrest.

A bond of $12,500 was set for the controlled substance warrant. Officials say that Hatley remained in jail as of this morning.

 

  POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS TOUR AREA FACTORIES

 

Poplar Bluff High School students recently went on a tour of area factories.

Several factories at the Poplar Bluff Industrial Park partnered to host plant tours for Poplar Bluff Schools last week, during the second annual Manufacturing Day organized to promote job opportunities available locally.

A total of 84 Poplar Bluff High School juniors and seniors signed up to participate in the event, along with Technical Career Center and Graduation Center students.

Briggs and Stratton, the Gates Corporation, Mid-Continent Steel and Wire, Revere Plastics, and Starting USA hosted the students throughout the day.

  Authorities in Northeast Arkansas are asking for the public’s help in finding two men.

According to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, Joshua Burleson and Gage Kirby are both wanted for delivery of crystal methamphetamine.

CAMPBELL MAN KILLED IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS WRECKOne person is dead following a wreck Monday morning in Northeast Arkansas.

Officials with the Arkansas State Police tell KWOC News that 24 year old Anthony Hibbing, of Campbell, was driving on Highway 62 in Clay County, when he reportedly ran a stop sign and was hit by a vehicle.

Hibbing was killed in the wreck. Officials say that the driver of the second vehicle was not injured.

 

TWO INMATES ESCAPE FROM SOUTHEAST MISSOURI PRISON A manhunt is underway after two inmates escaped from a prison in Southeast Missouri over the weekend.

According to the Caruthersville Police Department, 41 year old Joseph Latamondeer, of East Prairie and 27 year old William Carter, of Kennett escaped from the Pemiscot County Justice Center in Caruthersville during the early morning hours on Sunday.

Police say that both men should be considered dangerous and any information concerning their whereabouts should be reported immediately to authorities by calling 911 or 573-333-4101.

 

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE SEARCHING FOR TWO SUSPECTS IN CONNECTION TO ALLEGED THEFT FROM AREA BUSINESS Poplar Bluff police say they are searching for two suspects in connection to a theft from an area business.

According to the Police Department, an employee at Wal-Mart told officers that on Saturday two black males entered the store and selected several items including seven pre-paid debit cards.

The men took the merchandise to the sporting goods register and requested that the cashier put $500 on each card. One of the men then asked the cashier to retrieve a box of ammunition after the items were scanned. Once the cashier turned around the other man reached over and pushed the "cash" button on the register.

The employee told police that this would have told the register the items were paid for in full. One of the men then put a credit or debit card in the machine and acted as if he had purchased the items with his card.

The cashier believed the merchandise was paid for with the card because after the “cash” button was pressed the register printed a receipt and showed the items were paid. The men left the store with the cards and other items bringing the total value stolen to over $3,600.

BRIDGE REPAIRS TO CAUSE NUMEROUS CLOSURES A multiple bridge repair project in Butler County is underway.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route 51 and Route B between Fisk and Poplar Bluff will have various closures as contractor crews perform the repairs. The crew will be working on a total of 10 bridges located between US 60 and Business 60.

Improvements are already underway from the Route 60 Outer Road to Route FF in Fisk. The repairs in this location are expected to be completed October 23rd, weather permitting.

Crews will progress from east to west, with each bridge remaining closed for several weeks as repairs are underway.

According to officials, the completion of the 10 bridges is anticipated in March 2018.

 

ONE KILLED, THREE INJURED IN NEW MADRID COUNTY WRECK An East Prairie woman has died in connection to a wreck Monday afternoon in New Madrid County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred at around 3 pm Monday on US 60 near Sikeston.

A freightliner reportedly struck the back of a Chevrolet Silverado. The Silverado then ran off the side of the road and hit a tree.

A passenger in the Silverado, 55 year old Carylene Gore was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and two other passengers were injured and taken to an area hospital.

No injuries were listed for the driver of the freightliner.

 

DEXTER MAN ARRESTED ON BURGLARY AND CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WARRANT Authorities in Stoddard County say a Dexter man has been taken into custody on a burglary and controlled substance warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 27 year old Michael Knight was recently arrested on a warrant for burglary 2nd degree, distribution of controlled substance, and resisting arrest.

Knight’s bond was set at $25,000, cash only.

 

ILLINOIS MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WAYNE COUNTY WRECK An Illinois man has been flown to an area hospital following a single vehicle wreck near the Wayne and Butler County line.

According to authorities, 44 year old Brian Engle, of Gardner, Illinois, was driving on Highway 67 Monday night when his vehicle ran off the side of the road, struck an embankment, became airborne, and overturned.

Engel was ejected during the wreck. He suffered serious injuries and was flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

THREE TEENAGERS KILLED IN BUTLER COUNTY WRECK OVER THE WEEKENDThree Poplar Bluff teenagers have died following a single vehicle wreck in Butler County.

Butler County Coroner Andy Moore tells KWOC News that the wreck occurred Saturday evening at around 10 pm on Route W, 1 mile north of Poplar Bluff.

A vehicle driven by 16 year old Linda Shultz ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree. Shultz, along with two other passengers were killed in the wreck. The passengers were identified as 14 year old Cody Logan and 16 year old Camille McCain.

A third passenger in the vehicle was injured in the wreck and flown to a Memphis hospital.

 

HUNTER EDUCATION COURSE SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK IN DONIPHAN A Hunter Education Course has been scheduled for this week in Doniphan.

The course will be held at 5:30 pm on Friday, October 20th, at the Doniphan Masonic Lodge.

Attendees must have completed the knowledge portion of the testing prior to the class. Hunter education books containing the knowledge questions are available at the US Forest Service office.

 

OVER THREE MONTH LONG BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY Route 158 in Butler County will be closed for over three months so contractor crews can perform a bridge replacement.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the bridge involved is located between Route BB and County Road 321.

Weather permitting, work will begin today and the bridge is scheduled to re-open on Saturday, January 27th, 2018.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FACING MULTIPLE CHARGES FOLLOWING WEEKEND ARREST IN BUTLER COUNTY Authorities in Butler County have arrested a Poplar Bluff man on a felony drug charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 40 year old Richard Simmers was taken into custody Friday evening on a felony charge of possession of marijuana.

Simmers was also arrested on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia and several Ripley County failure to appear warrants.

Following the arrest, Simmers was held at the Butler County Jail.

 

THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER FOR THE 15TH ANNUAL CHILD ABUSE AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CONFERENCE IS THIS WEEK The deadline to register for the 15th Annual Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Conference is this week.

According to the Butler County Community Resource Council, the event will be held from 8:30 am to 2 pm on Tuesday, October 31st at First United Methodist Church in Poplar Bluff.

ZALMA FISH FRY SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND A fundraiser for Zalma Fire and rescue has been scheduled for this weekend.

The fish fry is scheduled for 5 to 9 pm this Saturday at the Zalma Fire Station. An adult plate is $6 and the meal includes two pieces of fish, slaw, hush puppies, and a drink.

The cost for children 12 and under is $4.50.

The Zalma Fire Station is located at 499 Main Street in Zalma.

 

POPLAR BLUFF POM SQUAD TO HOST THEIR THIRD ANNUAL PRINCESS FOR A DAY FUNDRAISER The Poplar Bluff Pom Squad has announced they will be hosting their third annual Princess for a Day fundraising event on Saturday, October 28th.

The event is available for all girls ages 12 and under. Tickets are $25 and include a princess tiara, hair styling, make-up, and more. It will be held at the Poplar Bluff Kindergarten Center and Gymnasium.

Pre-registration will be held on tonight from 5 to 7 pm at the Poplar Bluff High School football field entrance.

COFFEE WITH A COP EVENT SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

The Poplar Bluff Police Department will be holding their next coffee with a cop this morning.

The event will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 am at McDonald’s on Highway 67 North.

  WOMAN ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTING EMPLOYEE AT A STEELE BUSINESS

  A woman has been taken into custody in connection to altercation at a Steele business.

According to Steele Police Chief Billy Joe Stanfield, last week officers responded to an area Family Dollar Store in reference to someone attacking a store employee.

A clerk told officers that the woman, later identified as 28-year-old Laci Lunsford, of Steele, was allegedly attempting to leave the store with merchandise that had not been paid for when she was confronted by the clerk. Lunsford became belligerent toward the store clerk and allegedly assaulted the clerk by hitting her.

Lunsford was arrested on a warrant for assault and shoplifting. Following the arrest, she was taken to the Pemiscot County Jail.

 

  CLAY COUNTY SHERIFF WARNING ABOUT SCAM PHONE CALLS CLAIMING TO SOLICIT DONATIONS FOR FALLEN OFFICERS

  Authorities in Clay County want area residents to be aware of a phone scam.

According to Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller, there is a new scam where callers from Level Three Communication, LLC are soliciting donations for fallen officers.

Miller tells KWOC News that the callers are not affiliated with any charity for fallen officers.

If you receive a call like this, contact your local law enforcement agency.

 

  MISSOURI SEAT BELT USAGE UP OVER TWO PERCENT FROM LAST YEAR

  More Missourians are wearing their seat belts according to a new survey.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the 2017 Missouri Seat Belt Usage Survey final report shows that Missouri’s overall seat belt usage is up to 84 percent. This is a 2.6 percent increase from 2016, but still below the latest national average of 90.1 percent.

The report showed that vehicle passengers and females were more commonly belted, and that occupants of sport utility/crossover along with van/minivans also had a higher rate of seat belt usage, at 86.5 percent. Pickup truck drivers and passengers had the lowest usage rate at 69.3 percent.

The survey was conducted by the Missouri Safety Center and University of Central Missouri.

 

  POPLAR BLUFF POLICE DEPARTMENT TO HOST DRUG TAKE BACK EVENT

  Poplar Bluff residents will have a chance to safely dispose of their unused, unwanted, or expired prescription drugs later this month.

The Poplar Bluff Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration will be holding a Drug Take Back event on Saturday, October 28th from 10 am to 2 pm at the Poplar Bluff Police Station.

The DEA cannot accept needles or sharps, only pills or patches. The service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked.

 

  BOLLINGER COUNTY MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY HOSTING EVENT FOR INTERNATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGY DAY

  The Bollinger County Museum of Natural History in Marble Hill will be holding an event later this month to celebrate International Archaeology Day.

The event will be held from noon to four PM on Saturday, October 21st.

Officials say there will be activities, including a children’s Native American archaeology dig, puzzles, games, and crafts. There will also be a presentation from Mike Cormer from the Missouri State Park System.

  FOOTBALL AND VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS SELECTED AS POPLAR BLUFF ATHLETES OF THE MONTH

  A football and volleyball player have each been selected as the Poplar Bluff High School Athletes of the Month for September.

Seniors Makarius Bell and Hannah Vaughn were both chosen for the award by the Mules Booster Club.

Bell made 58 tackles, seven tackles for loss, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery through six games this football season. In the classroom, he maintains an 8.31 GPA.

Vaughn has the most assists in a season with 677 and the most assists in a game with 39, plus ongoing records in serving attempts and career assists. In the classroom, she maintains an 11.2 GPA.

MAN CONSIDERED ARMED AND DANGEROUS BEING SOUGHT IN CONNECTION TO STABBING INVESTIGATION IN POPLAR BLUFF

 

Authorities in Poplar Bluff are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a man in connection to an investigation.

Officials with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tell KWOC News that 45 year old Joseph Rick, of Poplar Bluff, is wanted in connection to a stabbing investigation.

Police say that Rick should be considered armed and dangerous.

MISSING DUNKLIN COUNTY WOMAN FOUND IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

 

A missing Dunklin County woman has been found in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 76 year old Linda Bullock, of Senath, had last been contacted on October 1st. Her vehicle was found abandoned in Clay County on Wednesday and an endangered person advisory was then issued.

According to the Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller, Bullock has been found safe.

Further details were not released.

 

  DEXTER MAN ARRESTED ON KIDNAPPING WARRANT

 

A Dexter man is in custody this morning on a kidnapping warrant.

Few details about the incident have been released; however the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tells KWOC News that 25 year old Matthew Ryan Diamond was recently arrested on a warrant for kidnapping.

Officials say there is no bond and Diamond remained in jail as of this morning.

According to Missouri Case Net, an arraignment for Diamond has been scheduled for this morning in Stoddard County.

 

 

TWO ILLINOIS RESIDENTS ARRESTED ON FELONY DRUG CHARGE IN WAYNE COUNTY

 

Two Illinois residents were taken into custody Wednesday evening in Wayne County on a felony drug charge.

According to authorities, both 21 year old Michael Green, of Carol Stream, and 20 year old Chase Miller, of Springfield, were arrested shortly after 5 pm on three counts of felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

Both men are also reportedly facing a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

 

  POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN FACING METH AND MARIJUANA CHARGES OUT OF BUTLER COUNTY

 

Authorities in Butler County have arrested a Poplar Bluff woman on meth and marijuana charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 45 year old Mary Brewer was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Brewer is also facing a charge of possession of under 10 grams of marijuana.

 

  WOMAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN WAYNE COUNTY ON METH CHARGE

 

A woman is facing charges following her arrest Wednesday morning in Wayne County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 25 year old Lakeshia Mcadoo, of Greenville, was arrested shortly before noon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine. She is also facing a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, Mcadoo was held at the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

 

  SHOULDER REPAIRS SET FOR TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

 

Route N in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane both today and tomorrow so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform shoulder repairs.

According to MoDOT, the work zone is located from Route 60 to Route E.

Work is scheduled to take place from 8 am to 3 pm both days.

POPLAR BLUFF RESIDENTS SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR UTILITY WORKERSResidents of Poplar Bluff should be prepared for an upcoming visit from utility crews.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, in the coming months, city residents will be receiving a visit from work crews from Anixter, a company contracting with Poplar Bluff Municipal Utilities. The crews will be trading current electric meters to a new more advanced meter.

According to officials, the workers will be in white vans and wearing an ID.

The workers will attempt to advise you just prior to changing out the equipment but will conduct the meter trade during their visit. The power outage will last approximately 5 to 10 seconds.

 

TODAY IS FINAL DAY TO REGISTER FOR NOVEMBER ELECTION Residents in three Southeast Missouri counties will be voting in elections next month and time is running out for you to register.

Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft tells KWOC News that today is the last day to register for the November 7th elections.

Some residents in Stoddard and Scott Counties will be voting in a legislative election while voters in Dunklin and Shannon Counties will be participating in special elections.

Ashcroft says any Missourian can visit www.GoVoteMissouri.com to register, check their registration status, or get more information about registering to vote. In order to register, you must be a U.S. citizen, a Missouri resident, and 18 years old by the day of the election.

 

ROUTE 60 TO BE REDUCED TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS Eastbound Route 60 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform pavement repairs.

The section of Route 60 being reduced is located between County Road 567 and Route Z.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 am to 5 pm.

 

TEMPERATURES TO BARELY GET TO 70 TODAY Remember to grab a jacket or windbreaker today before you leave home.

The high temperature is anticipated to stay in the upper 60’s today here in Poplar Bluff. The true fall weather will not make it to the weekend however, as forecasters are expecting temperatures to rise to the lower 80’s on Friday and upper 80’s on Saturday.

Fall will be back next week however, as area highs will be back in the lower 70’s on Monday and Tuesday.

 

PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS ON BUTLER COUNTY RAMP TODAY Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation will be in Butler County today for pavement repairs on a Route 60 on ramp.

According to MoDOT, the Route T to Westbound Route 60 ramp will be reduced to one lane today for the repairs.

Work is scheduled to take place today from 7 am to 5 pm.

 

THREE POPLAR BLUFF R-1 FACULTY AWARDED GRANTS FROM MISSOURI SCHOOL TEACHERS ASSOCIATION Three faculty members in the Poplar Bluff R-1 School District have been awarded mini grants from the Missouri School Teachers Association for additional classroom resources.

According to Poplar Bluff MSTA President Karmen Carson, a total of 123 entries were submitted from the organization's Southeast Region and the winning proposals were reviewed anonymously by a retired teachers group.

The educators were granted $100 apiece toward their projects.

Eugene Field first grade teacher Kristen Spain will use her mini grant to receive a subscription to the Science Spin edition of Scholastic Magazine for its curriculum-based activities.

Lake Road librarian Shiela Boyles chose a set of books on the concept of 'growth mindset' so elementary teachers can have conversations with students about finding learning opportunities even in failure.

Junior High communication arts teacher Julie Gambill will purchase computer microphone equipment so students can work on their verbal skills by producing podcasts online.

APPARENT GAS LEAK UNCOVERED ON NORTH SIDE OF POPLAR BLUFFAn apparent gas leak was discovered Monday in Poplar Bluff.

KWOC News spoke with Chief Ralph Stucker with the Poplar Bluff Fire Department who said a gas line was cut which lead to evacuations in Eight Points Complex

"Monday morning at 9:30 AM we received a call from dispatch center of the gas line being cut behind Ross Dress for less in the Eight Points Complex. Poplar Bluff Fire Department along with the Poplar Bluff Police Department responded to the incident. Upon our arrival we found a contractor had ruptured a line of service coming to the back of the building. We evacuated Ross, Shoe Carnival, and Walmart Neighborhood Market until we could get to the leak contained. Members of the local gas company was able to go shut the valve off that killed a line. Evacuations was probably no more than 15 to 30 minutes. Soon as we got to gas line shut down we all took a meter through there and make sure we had no gas readings in the building soon as we clear each one we left and come back in."

Chief Stucker would add there were no injuries reported with this incident.

 

MAN ARRESTED SUNDAY IN MISSISSIPPI COUNTY ON METH CHARGE A Dexter man has been taken into custody in Mississippi County on a felony drug charge.

According to authorities, 31 year old Timothy Achter was arrested Sunday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Achter is also facing charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Following the arrest, he was transported to the Mississippi County Jail.

 

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SET FOR TODAY IN PEMISCOT COUNTY The Southbound I-55 ramp in Pemiscot County will be reduced with a 14-foot width restriction over two weeks as contractor crews perform pavement repairs.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the repairs will be on the Route 84 southbound ramp onto I-55.

Work is set to take place today through Saturday, October 21st from 6 am to 7 pm daily.

 

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI UNDER MARGINAL RISK FOR SEVERE WEATHER TONIGHT Southeast Missouri is in line for showers and possibly thunderstorms today and weather officials say there is a chance for severe weather as well.

The National Weather Service says that the Storm Prediction Center has Southeast Missouri in a marginal area for severe thunderstorms late this afternoon and this evening.

The main concerns will be large hail and locally damaging winds, however an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

 

WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK NEAR GREENVILLE A Neelyville woman was taken to an area hospital Monday morning following a single vehicle wreck in Wayne County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 22 year old Nicole Litters was driving on US 67, about 1 mile south of Greenville, when her vehicle ran off the side of the road and overturned.

Litters suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

WILLIAMSVILLE MAN FACING METHAMPHETAMINE CHARGEA Williamsville man is facing multiple felony charges following his arrest over the weekend in Butler County.

According to the Highway Patrol, 30 year old Allen Minor was arrested shortly after 1 am Saturday on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, Minor was taken to the Butler County Jail on a 24 hour hold.

 

TWO STODDARD COUNTY RESIDENTS INJURED AFTER THEIR VEHICLE OVERTURNED NEAR DEXTER Two people were injured over the weekend after their vehicle overturned in Stoddard County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the wreck happened at around 9 am Friday on Highway WW, 4 miles north of Dudley.

The driver, 22 year old Kaylin Craft and a passenger, 33 year old Nathan Kramer, both of Dexter, suffered serious injuries in the wreck and were taken to area hospitals.

ROUTE Z IN STODDARD COUNTY TO BE CLOSED FOR FOUR MONTHS FOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT A four month long bridge replacement project to begin today will cause the closure of a Stoddard County road.

Route Z in Stoddard County will be closed between Route VV and County Road 755 as contractor crews replace a bridge.

The road is anticipated to re-open on Tuesday, February 13th.

 

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN ARRESTED IN ON A FELONY WARRANT Authorities in Poplar Bluff have arrested a woman on a felony warrant.

Officials with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tell KWOC News that 24 year old Mercedes Patterson, of Poplar Bluff, was recently arrested on a felony warrant for burglary 1st degree and a misdemeanor warrant for stealing.

Patterson’s bond was set at $100,000 and officials say as of this morning remains in jail.

 

DRIVER EXAMINATION STATIONS ACROSS MISSOURI TO BE CLOSED TODAY State officials say that driver examination stations throughout the state will be closed today.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol say that the closures are in observance of Columbus Day.

Normal operations are set to resume on Tuesday.

 

 

   

 

 

TODAY IS PINK OUT DAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

Today is Pink-Out Day, an annual fundraising event for the United Cancer Assistance Network.

  2017 QULIN HOMECOMING TO BE HELD THIS WEEKEND

  The 2017 Qulin Homecoming has been scheduled for this weekend.

The festivities will kick off tonight with the Qulin Homecoming Beauty Pageants, starting at 6 pm at the Qulin Middle School Gym.

Events scheduled for Saturday include the parade, a corn hole tournament, and a pumpkin decorating contest. There will also be multiple food and craft booths.

  OVER TEN POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS QUALIFY FOR ALL DISTRICT CHOIR

  Over ten Poplar Bluff students recently qualified for the Southeast Missouri all district choir.

According to school officials, 12 Poplar Bluff High School choral students were named to the choir following auditions last month in Cape Girardeau, the most to qualify in recent memory.

The finalists will rehearse and perform a concert on Saturday, November 11th, at Cape Central High School.

Officials say that the upperclassmen will also have an opportunity to try out for the All-State Choir.

 

  FLORIDA MAN ARRESTED ON METH CHARGE IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

  A Florida man has been arrested in Southeast Missouri on a felony meth charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 44 year old Michael Best, of Lakeland, Florida, was taken into custody last night in Pemiscot County on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

He was also reportedly arrested on a charge of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

MAN ARRESTED IN BUTLER COUNTY ON MULTIPLE DRUG RELATED CHARGES Authorities in Butler County have arrested an area man on multiple drug related charges.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 64 year old Elmer Stucker, of Poplar Bluff, was taken into custody Wednesday night on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – hydrocodone.

Stucker is also facing charges including possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failure to drive on the right half of the roadway.

Following the arrest, Stucker was held at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.

 

RURAL RESIDENTS IN CARTER COUNTY ASKED TO MAKE SURE THEIR MAILBOX IS LABELED

Rural residents in Carter County are being asked to make sure their mailbox is labeled.

According to a post on Facebook shared by Carter County Sheriff Richard Stephens, a 911 addressing project has been started in the county.

Anyone who receives their mail by highway contract route or rural route is being asked to label their mailbox with the route and box number as soon as possible.

The company that is contracted to do the county mapping will be new 911 address with the corresponding route address.

 

POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS CONSTRUCTING PONTOON BOAT

Middle School gifted students in Poplar Bluff are constructing a makeshift boat as part of a sea unit in advance of a field trip to Mobile, Alabama, next month to study the prolific Gulf Coast ecosystem.

According to school officials, the sixth grade SINGS class is using 2x4s, plywood and PVC piping to build a pontoon boat after watching a series of YouTube videos.

The students determined a pontoon boat has the greatest center of buoyancy and stability because of its flat bottom and wide surface area following an experiment with various shapes using tinfoil and pennies.

Upon completion, the students hope to test the boat out at Wappapello Lake and make predictions based on their theory. Afterward, they will raffle off their creation.

 

BERNIE MAN IN CUSTODY ON ASSAULT AND WEAPON WARRANT

A Bernie man is in custody this morning on an assault warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 65 year old Cary Jones was recently arrested on a warrant for assault 3rd degree and unlawful use of a weapon.

Jones’s bond has been set at $25,000 cash only, and officials say he remained in jail as of this morning.

 

APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR THREE RIVERS LPN PROGRAM

Students wishing to join the new Practical Nursing Program at Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff have been given some extra time to submit their application.

The original deadline for applications was October 2nd, but the college says that the deadline has been moved to October 20th.

The Practical Nursing Application form for the January 2018 LPN cohort is available online at trcc.edu/admissions. Applicants must also submit an online application for admission to Three Rivers College.

To be eligible for acceptance into the program, students must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, take the ATI TEAS entrance exam, have a 2.0 GPA or higher, and complete a short questionnaire.

STRIPING PROJECT SET TO BEGIN TODAY IN DONIPHAN

A road striping project is set to begin today in Doniphan.

Officials with the Doniphan Police Department tell KWOC News that striping will begin at 9 am today on Highway Street from the city limit to the Masonic Lodge and on Jefferson Street from Current River Drive to 160.

Police are urging motorists to use caution while driving in those areas.
