INSTALLATION BEGINS ON ACCESSIBLE PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT AT BACON PARK

  Installation began this week on accessible playground equipment at Bacon Park in Poplar Bluff.

KWOC News spoke with Subrina Berger with the Kiwanis Club of Poplar Bluff about the project.

"Wednesday afternoon have about 30 volunteers from the community and different organizations here at bacon Park which is owned by the Kiwanis Club and maintained and so we basically put together a project 3 years ago to install accessible equipment and that means that children of all abilities and disabilities should have a place to play.

Our reasoning behind that is if they learn to play together, they learn to work together. We are actually installing phase one today and in order to do that we needed to raise approximately $65,000.

We were very fortunate a year ago to have won $25,000 worth of playground equipment from landscape which is a company that works with Kiwanis International and that $25,000 worth of equipment made phase one possible for us because after 3 years of trying to raise the money a year at a time through different projects like the Kiwanis haunted house or the Nashville music concert series, It's been a slow process but one that I know that a lot of people are passionate about. So the completion of phase 1 is a huge victory for us.

Phase two is going to start right away. The fundraising begins in December with our 2nd Annual Nashville concert music series, which is brought to us by producers out of Nashville and local Artists as well as artists from across the country and national television shows. They come to Poplar Bluff and they come here for free and they are here to support the purpose of this playground and that is to make it accessible to all children.

Phase two will cost us approximately $70,000. We have a long way to go but we know we’re going to get there. I couldn't say thank you enough and I actually am going to tear up because this is so near and dear to my heart. I have a child who does not need accessible equipment, but I don’t know that tomorrow he won’t.

So I have that passion instilled in my heart and I know that there are a million people out there who feel the same way. Whether we need it today or need it tomorrow, it’s planning ahead and making sure that every child can play."

  CHANCES OF THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE WEEKEND

  The weekend is almost here and with it comes the chance of thunderstorms.

According to a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by the National Weather Service, our region has a chance of thunderstorms beginning late Saturday night and continuing over most of the region through Monday.

Weather officials say that the best chances will be Sunday into Sunday night, when a few strong to severe storms cannot be ruled out. Heavy rainfall and lightning will be the most prevalent threats through the period.

  DATE SET FOR RELAY FOR LIFE IN POPLAR BLUFF

  A Relay for Life event has been scheduled for September in Poplar Bluff.

The event will be held from 6 pm to Midnight on September 15th at Fred M. Morrow Stadium.

Relay for Life is a family friendly event that benefits the American Cancer Society. Organizers say there will be activities for all ages at the event.

Area Businesses can form a team or host a one-time fundraiser to partner with Relay for Life.

  ALZHEIMER'S WORKSHOP TO BE HELD THIS MONTH IN MALDEN

  A workshop has been scheduled for this month to help attendees learn about Alzheimer’s disease.

The workshop, presented by the Alzheimer’s Association, will be held from 6 to 7 pm on Tuesday, August 15th at the Twin Oaks Adult Day Care Center in Malden.

Attendees will find out how to recognize the signs of Alzheimer’s disease, learn the benefits of early detection, and discover resources to help.

  MATTHEWS MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON FELONY CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WARRANT

  A Matthews man has been taken into custody on a felony controlled substance warrant.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 49 year old Jerry Marks was arrested Thursday evening on a felony warrant out of New Madrid County for possession of a controlled substance.

Following the arrest, Marks was held in New Madrid County.

  WOMAN ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY ON WARRANTS FOR CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE AND DRUG PARAPHERNALIA

  Authorities in Stoddard County say an area woman was in custody this morning following her arrest on a warrant.

Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 37 year old Marsha Lynn Thomas, of Dexter, was recently arrested on warrants for possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

Her bond was set at $5000 and she remained in jail as of this morning.

SHOOTING LEAVES ONE DEAD IN ROMBAUER

  A man has died in connection to a shooting in Butler County.

Investigator Randle Huddleston with the Butler County Sheriff’s Department tells KWOC News that the incident occurred in Rombauer.

"On Wednesday afternoon around 1:30 p.m. Butler County deputies were dispatched to 189 Borough Street in Rombauer, Missouri in reference to a domestic assault between a brother and sister. Upon arrival Butler County deputies observed that the brother, 48 year-old Mike Leslie, was deceased due to an apparent gunshot wound.

Butler County deputies conducted an investigation, subsequent to that investigation it was learned that the sister to Mike Leslie who is Judith Kimbrell, 51 years old of Rombauer, had been involved in a domestic altercation with Mike. During that altercation she retrieved a firearm from her bedroom, the firearm was described as a Hi-Point semi-automatic 9mm, retrieved the firearm from the bedroom, confronted Mike Leslie, and fired one round striking him in the stomach area.

Witnesses and Miss Kimbrell were taken to the Butler County Sheriff's Department for interviews, during which time Miss Kimbrell admitted to shooting Mr. Leslie due to the domestic altercation that they were involved in. The witness statements have been collected and the report will be sent over to the prosecuting attorney requesting charges of domestic assault first and unlawful use of a weapon."

  MISSING BUTLER COUNTY MAN FOUND DEAD

  Updating a story we have been following for you this week, authorities in Butler County have found the body of a missing man.

According to Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs, the body of 41 year old Thomas Mayabb, of Fisk, was found Wednesday afternoon.

The body was discovered in the Black River, six and a half miles south of Dan River Access. Mayabb was pronounced dead at the scene by Butler County Coroner Andy Moore.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday.

  9TH ANNUAL MULE SKINNER GOLF TOURNAMENT SCHEDULED FOR TOMORROW

  The 9th Annual Mule Skinner Golf Tournament is set to be held tomorrow in Poplar Bluff.

The 4 person scramble tournament will be held at the Westwood Hills Country Club. Organizers say the entry fee is $500 per team, which includes a cart and lunch. Hole sponsorships are also available for $100 per hole.

All proceeds will go to benefit the Poplar Bluff Mules athletics programs.

  MOBILITY IMPAIRED MODERN GUN DEER HUNT SCHEDULED AT WAPPAPELLO LAKE

  The US Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake has announced the dates for the 2017 Mobility Impaired Modern Gun Deer Hunt.

Corps officials tell KWOC News that the hunt will be held on October 21st and 22nd. Applications will be accepted until September 1st.

Applicants must be 11 years of age and have a permanent physical condition that severely impairs their mobility, such as paralysis or amputation of lower extremities, and requires the assistance of a wheelchair, braces, crutches, or similar aids of mobility.

Hunters will be selected by random drawing for the two day hunt to be conducted at various locations around Wappapello Lake.

  PARAGOULD ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY AND TOMORROW

  Officials in Paragould say that an area road will be closed today and part of tomorrow.

According to the Paragould Police Department, today the Arkansas Department of Transportation will be closing South 2nd Avenue between Jones Road and East Dennington Street.

The closure will last until sometime Friday afternoon. Motorists are advised to plan accordingly, and give yourself extra time for the detour needed in your situation.

  BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU WARNS CONSUMERS TO USE CAUTION WITH SIKESTON BUSINESS

  The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to use caution with a Sikeston-based business.

The bureau says consumers should use caution before dealing with Joseph L. Adams or his business, Cadillac Cookers.

Several restaurant owners reportedly told the BBB they ordered and paid for custom-built barbecue smokers from cadillaccookers.com and the products were either defective or never delivered. The complainants said the company cut off communication with them after receiving payment.

Adams reportedly told the bureau his business temporarily is closed while he deals with a tax issue with the state of Missouri. According to the Missouri Department of Revenue’s Taxation Division, Adams owes more than $250,000 in delinquent taxes to the state.

BUTLER COUNTY AUTHORITIES CONTINUE THE SEARCH FOR MISSING MAN Continuing to follow a story we brought you yesterday, a search is set to resume today for a man who has been reported missing in Butler County.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News that 41 year old Thomas Mayabb was reported missing at around 2:30 pm Monday. Dobbs says that Mayabb’s clothing was found on the banks of Black River.

Mayabb is described as a white male, six feet, three inches tall, weighing 145 pounds.

Anyone who has information on his whereabouts is asked to contact the Butler County Sheriff’s Department.

HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY IN MISSISSIPPI COUNTY

A homicide investigation is underway in Mississippi County.

According to authorities, the victim has been identified as 55 year old Ralph Edward Cross, of Wilson City.

Few details about the death have been made available and no one has been taken into custody. An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday.

Authorities are reportedly searching for four women as persons of interest in the case.

ESSEX MAN ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY ON FELONY METH CHARGE

An Essex man is facing a felony meth charge in connection to his arrest in Stoddard County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 50 year old Perry Mims was arrested shortly after 8 pm Tuesday night on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, Mims was held at the Stoddard County Jail.

BACK TO SCHOOL FAIRS SCHEDULED FOR WAYNE COUNTY SCHOOLS

Two back to school fairs have been scheduled for this week in Wayne County.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, they will have tables set up at the Greenville Back to School Fair today from 9 am to 1pm. The fair will be at Greenville Elementary Gym.

The Sheriff’s Department will also have a table set up at Clearwater R-1 School District Fair from 10 am to 2 Thursday at the Clearwater Middle School multipurpose room.

Officials say that the Sheriff’s Department will have school supplies available at both fairs.

AREA BUSINESS OWNER NAMED TO MISSOURI STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION

A Poplar Bluff business owner has been named to the Missouri State Board of Education.

Missouri Governor Eric Greitens has announced that Eddy Justice was one of three people appointed as members of the State Board.

Justice is the owner and an agent of Eddy Justice State Farm Insurance Agency. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from John Brown University.

MAN IN CUSTODY ON BUTLER COUNTY DRUG WARRANT

An area man is in custody this morning on a $100,000 cash bond for a drug warrant.

Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 28 year old Sean Jones, of Dexter, was recently arrested on a Butler County warrant for sales of a controlled substance.

As of this morning, authorities say Jones was still in custody at the Stoddard County Jail.

MAN IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING COMPLAINT THAT HE WAS CATCHING CATS AND ALLOWING HIS DOG TO ATTACK THEM

A man has been taken into custody in Kennett following a complaint alleging that he was catching cats in the neighborhood and allowing his dog to attack and them.

According to the Kennett Humane Department, the complaint stems from an incident on July 24^th.

The suspect, identified as Zachary Burns, has been taken into custody and charged with felony animal abuse and felony harassment.

He is being held at the Dunklin County Justice Center on a $10,000 cash only bond. The investigation is reportedly ongoing and further arrests are possible.

BRIDGE DELAYS TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

Route 162 in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.

Officials say that the bridge involved is located over Interstate 55.

Work is scheduled to take place today through 5 pm and motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near the area.

MAN ARRESTED ON MURDER CHARGE IN RIPLEY COUNTY One man is dead and another is in custody in connection to a shooting in Ripley County.

Ripley County Sheriff Mike Barton tells us more about the incident.

MIKE BARTON:

2 a.m. Monday morning the Sheriff's Office received a call that a shooting had occurred in Ripley County on 160 West, West of Doniphan. Deputies arrived on the scene to find a male adult that had been shot in the right lower abdomen. He was conscious at that time, was put on a ambulance, and transported to Ripley County ER in Doniphan, which at that time he passed away due to the injuries of the gunshot wound. Myself and deputies at the scene searched for another male adult that allegedly had done the shooting. Was found and taken into custody and we are investigating the incident and more information can be released here shortly as we're putting together our probable cause affidavit to be sent to the prosecutor at this time. I called the Missouri State Highway Patrol and requested for the DDCC, Division Drug Crime Control for their assistance and the Ripley County Sheriff's Office and DDCC is working this investigation together.

The victim has been identified as 31 year old Matthew Schrimsher. An autopsy has been scheduled for 6 pm this evening in Farmington.

After we spoke to Barton, a probable cause affidavit was issued for 36 year old, Benjamin Ruhl, of Doniphan.

According to the affidavit, Ruhl had allegedly pointed a gun at a teenage girl at the residence before pursuing Schrimsher and young children up a stairway in the residence. Ruhl allegedly fired a shot through a door that hit Schrimsher. Ruhl then fled the residence with the firearm.

While outside, he also fired a shot that hit a vehicle that was being driven by Roy Schrimsher.

Ruhl is facing charges of first degree murder, first degree assault, two counts of armed criminal action, and four counts of first degree endangering the welfare of a child.

OVER MONTH LONG INTERSTATE PROJECT UNDERWAY IN PEMISCOT TODAY Southbound I-55 in Pemiscot County will be reduced with a 14 foot width restriction through early next month as contractor crews perform bridge maintenance.

Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation tell KWOC News that the work zone is located from Route E to the Missouri/Arkansas state line.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 am to 7 pm daily, through Saturday, September 9th.

ARGUMENT LEADS TO SHOOTING IN NEELYVILLE AREA A suspect is still at large in connection to a shooting in Neelyville.

According to the Lieutenant Charlie Phelps with the Butler County Sheriff’s Department, an argument was what led to the shooting.

CHARILE PHELPS:

On Sunday evening at approximately 11 p.m. Deputies were dispatched to the 100 block of Hanging Street in Neelyville, Missouri in reference in to assault with a firearm. Upon arrival deputies made contact with a victim who had been shot in the upper right arm area and was advised that the suspect had fled the scene before deputies arrived. During the investigations deputies learned that the shooting was caused due to an argument between two subjects who lived at the residence. The male victim was transported to the Poplar Bluff Regional hospital for treatment. The suspect involved in this case has not been located at this time.

The names of the suspect and victim have not been released.

CAMPBELL MAN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO STOLEN FOUR WHEELER A man has been taken into custody in connection to a four wheeler that was reported stolen in Campbell.

According to the Campbell Police Department, the vehicle was reported stolen on July 24th and was recently found in St. Francis, Arkansas.

During the investigation of the incident, Julius R. Counts of Campbell was arrested and charged with felony stealing and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Officials say that Counts was incarcerated in the Dunklin County Justice Center on a $10,000 cash only bond.

PIPE REPLACEMENT TO CAUSE CLOSURE OF NEW MADRID COUNTY ROAD TODAY Route UU in New Madrid County will be closed today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a pipe under roadway.

Officials say that the section of Route UU to be closed is located between Route D and County Road 784.

Work is scheduled to be performed today from 6 am to 4:30 pm.

TWO IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO SHOTS FIRED LAST WEEK IN BUTLER COUNTYUpdating a story we brought to you last week, two people have been taken into custody in connection to shots being fired in Poplar Bluff.

Investigator Brandon Lowe with the Butler County Sheriff's Department tells KWOC News that the two people arrested were brothers.

BRANDON LOWE:

On Tuesday July 25th, deputies with the Butler County Sheriff's Department was dispatched to The Warp Zone located on 67 Highway in Butler County, Missouri in reference to shots being fired. It was later determined that the shots were fired into a vehicle and the vehicle has subsequently left along with the initial reporting party had left the area also. Investigators were called at that time. When I was called I was notified that there was possible victims at the hospital. I responded to North Campus ER where on scene was investigator Randall Huddleston, Lieutenant Charlie Phelps, along with Desean Bell, Jordian Bell, April Noyes, and Brianna LeBlanc. It was discovered that none of the subjects had been struck by the gunfire that was exchanged. The vehicle that Desean, Jordian, April, and Brianna were in was at the hospital. I began processing the vehicle. I was able to locate four different spots the vehicle had been struck by a bullet. I was able to retrieve bullet fragments from inside one of the door panels on the vehicle. The next day on Wednesday, July 26th, through interviewing Brandon DeMar, it was discovered that he was the victim in this case and Desean and Jordian Bell was the suspects and had instigated the incident. On Friday, July 28th, we received warrants over from the Butler County prosecutor's office on Jordian and Desean Bell for armed criminal action and assault first with $100,000 bond on both. We responded to an address that I was able to obtain through Desean’s probation officer, located on Nellie Sue Circle. Once at the residence we were actually let in by April Noyse, Desean and Jordan's mother. I attempted to take Jordian into custody. Jordian resisted from me. I was able to place him on the ground and secure him in hand restraints. Both subjects then being Desean Bell and Jordian Bell were transported to the Butler County Justice Center where they were booked and lodged.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING WRECK NEAR POPLAR BLUFF One person has died following a wreck Sunday afternoon near Poplar Bluff.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 49 year old John Minks, of Malden, was driving on Highway 53 when he ran off the side of the road and overturned. Minks, who was reportedly not wearing a safety device, was ejected from the vehicle during the wreck.

He was later pronounced dead at a Poplar Bluff hospital.

WAYNE COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED THIS WEEK Route M in Wayne County will be closed this week while Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of Route M to be closed is located from Route 34 to the Madison County line.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday from 6 am to 4:30 pm daily.

ONE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN BOAT COLLISION ON CURRENT RIVER A Kennett man has been flown to an area hospital after being involved in a boat collision over the weekend.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the incident occurred shortly after 3 pm on Current River at Snaggy Bend in Ripley County.

56 year old Paul Digges was operating a boat that was slowing down when his boat was hit by a boat that was following him.

Digges was seriously injured in the wreck and flown to a Memphis hospital. No injuries were listed for the operator of the second boat.

MAN BEING SOUGHT IN CONNECTION TO INVESTIGATION IN POPLAR BLUFF Authorities in Poplar Bluff are asking for the public’s help in finding a man in connection to an ongoing investigation.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, officers are attempting to locate Shawn Daggett.

TWO ARRESTED ON METH AND MARIJUANA CHARGES IN BUTLER COUNTY Two people were arrested Friday night in Butler County on drug charges.

According to authorities, 37 year old Michael Shipman and 36 year old Dana ODonnell, both of Doniphan, were each taken into custody shortly before 9 pm Friday on a felony methamphetamine charge.

Both are also reportedly facing a charge of possession of marijuana.

Following the arrests, both Shipman and ODonnell were held at the Butler County Jail.

MODOT CREWS TO BEGIN PROJECT IN STODDARD COUNTY TODAY Route FF in Stoddard County will be temporarily closed beginning today as crews perform pavement repairs.

According to officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation, work is scheduled to take place from 6 am to 4:30 pm, daily, through Thursday, August 10th.

The work zone is located from Route 60 to Route E in Stoddard County.

FUNDRAISER SCHEDULED FOR TODAY TO BENEFIT WORLD WAR TWO VETERANA fundraiser has been scheduled for today to benefit a World War Two veteran whose Poplar Bluff home was severely damaged in a storm earlier this year.

The fundraiser for Wilbur and Anna Schmitt will be held from 11 am to 1 pm at Northside Nutrition Center in Poplar Bluff.

The Schmitt’s lost their previous home of two decades in a flood last year and only moved into this house in January. In late May, a tree fell on the home and caused significant damage.

MAN SHOT IN THE LEG AFTER ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTING A WOMAN A man has been flown to a Jonesboro hospital after he was shot in the leg on Wednesday.

According to authorities, the man had allegedly assaulted a woman in Dunklin County. A male subject stopped the assault and had taken the woman to his farm shop, where the suspect then approached and threatened them.

The suspect was continuing to approach them when he was shot by the male subject in the leg.

The names of the people involved have not been released and the incident is under investigation.

BLOOMFIELD MAN ARRESTED ON STATUTORY RAPE WARRANT A Bloomfield man is in custody this morning following his arrest on a statutory rape warrant.

Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 48 year old John Morse was recently taken into custody on a warrant for four counts of statutory rape and one count of furnishing pornographic material.

Officials say that Morse remained in custody as of this morning and his bond has been set at $75,000 cash.

MALDEN MAN FACING ASSAULT AND SEXUAL ABUSE CHARGES An area man is facing multiple charges, including sexual abuse, following his arrest Wednesday in Malden.

According to the Malden Police Department, 42-year-old Michael Downs, of Malden, was taken into custody on a felony Dunklin County Warrant for assault 2nd, assault 3rd, sexual abuse 2nd, and resisting or interfering with arrest.

His bond was set at $100,000 cash only. According to Missouri Case Net, his initial arraignment is scheduled for next Thursday.

KENNETT WOMAN FLOWN TO AREA HOSPITAL FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK A Kennett woman has been flown to an area hospital following a single vehicle wreck Thursday in Pemiscot County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 73 year old Jackie Carter was driving on County Road 283, near Hayti, when she lost control, ran off the road, and overturned.

Carter suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a Jonesboro hospital.

ROAD WORK TO BEGIN TODAY ON ROUTE 67 IN WAYNE COUNTY Southbound Route 67 in Wayne County will be reduced with a 12 foot width restriction for three weeks so contractor crews can perform bridge maintenance.

The Missouri Department of Transportation says the bridge is located over Bennett Creek between County Road 303 and Route K.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Friday, August 18th from 5 am to 8 pm daily.

BACK TO SCHOOL FAIR TO BE HELD NEXT WEEK AT TWIN RIVERS HIGH SCHOOL With the new school year approaching, a back to school fair will be held next week in Broseley.

The fair is scheduled for 1 to 7 pm on Wednesday, August 2nd.

The fair will be held at Twin Rivers High School.

SHOTS FIRED AT BUTLER COUNTY BUSINESSShots were reportedly fired in the parking lot of an area business earlier this week.

According to Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs, gunfire was exchanged between multiple people Tuesday evening in the parking lot of The Warp Zone on South Westwood Boulevard.

Dobbs says that no one was hit during the incident.

A man is being sought in connection to the incident, and anyone with additional information can contact the Butler County Sheriff’s Department at 573-785-8444.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE SEARCHING FOR POSSIBLE SUSPECT FOLLOWING PROPERTY DAMAGE AT AREA CAR DEALERSHIP Authorities in Poplar Bluff are seeking the public’s help in identifying a possible suspect in connection to a property damage complaint at an area business.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on July 21st, officers responded to Henderson Auto Sales, where the owner said an unknown suspect damaged vehicles in the lot. Police say the vehicles appeared to have been keyed.

After viewing surveillance video, a shirtless white male was identified as a possible suspect.

The surveillance video is available on the KWOC Facebook page and anyone who has information on the man’s identity is asked to contact Officer Barks at 573-785-5776, Extension 1352.

BLOOMFIELD MAN ARRESTED ON FEDERAL WARRANT IN STODDARD COUNTY A Bloomfield man has been taken into custody in Stoddard County on a federal warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 32 year old Derekis Johnson was recently arrested on a federal warrant for selling amphetamine.

No bond was set and Johnson has been transported to Cape Girardeau County.

HEAT AND HEAVY RAIN POSSIBLE FOR TODAY Weather officials say that Southeast Missouri could experience both high heat indexes and heavy rainfall today.

According to a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by the National Weather Service, Scattered to numerous thunderstorms will move across the area this afternoon or evening.

A few severe thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts are possible and locally heavy rain is expected.

Weather officials say that heat indexes may get over 100 degrees this afternoon before the storms arrive.

VEHICLE STRIKES TREE, HOUSE, AND PEDESTRIAN IN BUTLER COUNTY A Poplar Bluff man has been flown to an area hospital following an incident Wednesday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 17 year old driver from Ellsinore ran off the side of Highway 142 and struck a tree, a house, and then a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, 57 year old Ricky Dooley, was flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the vehicle received minor injuries and was taken to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE PROJECT UNDERWAY IN PEMISCOT COUNTY Bridge maintenance is underway on southbound I-55 in Pemiscot County.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation work is set to continue from 6 am to 7 pm daily through Saturday, September 9th.

During the maintenance, Southbound I-55 will be reduced with a 14 foot width restriction between Route U and Route 164.

ANNUAL WAPPAPELLO LAKE DUCK BLIND DRAWING SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 19TH A date has been set for the annual duck blind drawing at Wappapello Lake.

According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, the drawing will be held at 1 pm on August 19th at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitors Center. Anyone who wants to participate must be registered prior to 1 pm.

EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING  IN EFFECT THIS AFTERNOON

  An Excessive Heat Warning will go into effect today for some of our listeners in the Missouri Bootheel and Northeast Arkansas.

According to the National Weather Service, the excessive heat warning will be in effect from noon to 7 pm for Dunklin and Pemiscot Counties in Southeast Missouri as well as many counties in Northeast Arkansas, including Clay and Greene. In these areas, peak heat index readings could range from 105 to 115 degrees.

A Heat Advisory will be in effect from noon to 8 pm for most of the rest of our listening area. High temperatures will be in the mid 90’s today, with peak heat indexes in the afternoon being around 105 degrees.

Anyone who works or spends time outdoors will be at potential risk for heat-related illness including heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Remember to drink plenty of fluids and take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

  2017 PBHS FRESHMAN ORIENTATION TO BE HELD ON AUGUST 9TH

  The incoming freshman class to Poplar Bluff High School will get their first taste of high school life early next month.

The 2017 PBHS Freshman Orientation will be held from 7:30 am to noon on Wednesday, August 9th. This is a student only event, where the new freshmen will get to meet their advisory class, learn the layout of the campus, receive their class schedule, and participate in other activities.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend an open house for the Senior High School which will be held on August 22nd from 5:30 to 7 pm.

The new school year will begin in the Poplar Bluff School District on Thursday, August 17th.

  DATE SET FOR THREE RIVERS COLLEGE’S SECOND ANNUAL RUN 4 THE ARTS EVENT

  The date has been set for the second annual Run 4 the Arts in Poplar Bluff.

Three Rivers College will host the four-mile run and walk on Saturday, September 9th at 9 am.

Officials say that the event is being held to raise funds towards an endowed scholarship for fine arts students at Three Rivers College.

  CAMPBELL VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT APPROVED FOR GRANT TO GO TO NEW FIRE STATION PROJECT

  The Campbell Volunteer Fire Department has been approved for a grant to go to the new fire station project.

According to the Fire Department’s Facebook page, the project has been approved for a $462,200 30 year loan and a $7,800 grant.

The post says that progress on the project will begin in the next several months.

  PARAGOULD ROAD TO BE CLOSED FOR APPROXIMATELY THREE WEEKS

  Residents in Paragould should be prepared to find a detour if they drive on Spring Grove Road.

According to the Paragould Police Department, beginning today, Spring Grove Road will be closed for approximately three weeks in order to remove drainage tiles and replace them with a concrete structure.

Police say that the closure will be located just south of Mark Street.

  MODOT CREWS TO REDUCE RIPLEY COUNTY ROAD FOR BRIDGE MAINTENANCE

  Route H in Ripley County will be reduced to one lane through next Tuesday as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.

The bridge involved is located over Drain Ditch between Route KK and County Road H-6.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily through Tuesday, August 1st.

FIVE ARRESTED ON HEROIN RELATED CHARGES IN BUTLER COUNTY Five Poplar Bluff residents were arrested on heroin related charges over a four hour period Saturday night in Butler County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the first arrest happened shortly after 10 pm Saturday night.

45 year old Terrell Ward and 35 year old Cody Marks were both arrested on felony charges of distribution of a controlled substance - heroin and possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Later that night, officers also arrested 59 year old Kendis Scroggins, 35 year old Shuntell Miller, and 29 year old Keshia Youngblood for felony possession of a controlled substance – heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Officials did not say if the five arrests were connected.

CITY OF CLARKTON UNDER BOIL WATER ORDER THIS WEEK

Residents in Clarkton are being asked to boil their water this week.

City officials say that the city of Clarkton is under a boil water order until Friday.

Officials did not say what the cause for the boil water order was.

PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT CAUSING TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF STODDARD COUNTY ROAD

Route KK in Stoddard County will be closed daily through late next week so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway to be closed is located from Route 114 to County Road 732.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm daily through Thursday, August 3^rd.

PIEDMONT WOMAN FACING METH CHARGE OUT OF WAYNE COUNTY

A Piedmont woman has been taken into custody in Wayne County on a felony meth charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 40 year old Shawnda Luke was arrested shortly after 2 pm Monday on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Following the arrest, Luke was held at the Wayne County Jail.

FAKE MONEY REPORTED AT POPLAR BLUFF BUSINESSES

Multiple Poplar Bluff businesses reportedly were recently given fake money.

According to the Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce, two fast food restaurants received the counterfeit money over the weekend.

Other area businesses are being asked to be on the lookout for any additional counterfeit bills.

Motorists in Pemiscot County should expect delays on Interstate 55 for the next month.

According to the Missouri Deaprtment of Transportation, North and Southbound I-55 in Pemiscot County is being reduced with a 14 foot width restriction as contractor crews perform bridge maintenance.

Work is being done from 6 am to 7 pm daily through Saturday, August 26^th.

The work zone is located between Route 84 and the Route 412 interchange.

MALFUNCTIONING SIREN DISTURBS NUMEROUS PEOPLE IN NORTHERN BUTLER COUNTYMany people in the northern part of Poplar Bluff and Butler County were woken up early Sunday morning by a malfunctioning tornado siren.

The siren went off shortly after 1 am Saturday night and continued for around two hours.

Many area residents got onto Facebook to complain about the siren.

KWOC News spoke with Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs who says that the siren malfunctioned and had to be have its battery pulled. No information was released on what caused the malfunction or when the siren will be running like normal.

MARBLE HILL MAN KILLED IN BOLLINGER COUNTY WRECK A Marble Hill man has died from injuries he received in a wreck early Friday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 52 year old Robert Spencer was driving on County Road 807 in Bollinger County at around 2:30 am Friday, when his vehicle ran off the roadway and struck a tree.

Spencer was pronounce dead at a Cape Girardeau hospital later Friday morning.

A passenger in the vehicle suffered serious injuries and was also taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

TWO FACING METH CHARGES FOLLOWING ARREST IN BUTLER COUNTY Two people were arrested Friday afternoon in Butler County on a meth related charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, both 39 year old Jeffery Duncan, of Doniphan, and 35 year old Crystal Robinson, of Ellsinore, were taken into custody on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Both are also facing charges of possession of a controlled substance – marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, both were held at the Butler County Jail.

The section Route O to be closed is located from Route 67 to Route W.

FUNDRAISER SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK TO BENEFIT WORLD WAR TWO VETERAN A fundraiser has been scheduled for this week to benefit a World War Two veteran whose Poplar Bluff home was severely damaged in a storm earlier this year.

The fundraiser for Wilbur and Anna Schmitt will be held from 11 am to 1 pm Friday at Northside Nutrition Center in Poplar Bluff.

The Schmitt’s lost their previous home of two decades in a flood last year and only moved into this house in January. In late May, a tree fell on the home and caused significant damage.

SIX INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK NEAR ADVANCE Six people were injured, including two young children, in a single vehicle wreck near Advance.

According to authorities, the wreck occurred Saturday morning on County Road 214 in Stoddard County.

A vehicle, driven by 57 year old Kathryn Howell, of Advance, reportedly lost control and overturned in a ditch.

Four adult passengers in the vehicle suffered minor injuries, while two child passengers received moderate injuries. All six were taken to area hospitals. No injuries were listed for the driver.

WOMAN ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WARRANT A Dexter woman has been taken into custody in Stoddard County on a controlled substance warrant.

Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 25 year old Ashley Wamble was recently arrested on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

Wamble’s bond was set at $35,000 cash.

STODDARD COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED FOR PART OF THIS WEEK DUE TO PAVEMENT REPAIRS Route F in Stoddard County will be closed for part of this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

Work is scheduled to take place today through Wednesday from 7 am to 4:30 pm daily.

MoDOT officials say that the work zone will be located from Route 60 to Route J and will be open to local traffic only.

MAN ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTING HIS MOTHER IN POPLAR BLUFF A man has been taken into custody in Poplar Bluff after allegedly assaulting his elderly mother.

Detective Joey Woodruff with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that the arrest occurred earlier this week.

JOEY WOODRUFF: 

On Wednesday evening about 5 pm, patrolman Akers made contact with an elderly female at her residence, who wished to report her son, later identified as 45 year old Terry Blackburn of Poplar Bluff, assaulting her. The victim told patrolman Akers Blackburn had arrived at her residence and was angry. Blackburn came into the residence, began knocking things off the walls and breaking things inside. Blackburn then choked the victim and spit in her face. When the victim attempted to call the police Blackburn got angry and grabbed the victim's arms causing visible bruising and abrasions. Later in the evening patrolman Reed located Blackburn walking near the 1800 block of Broadway. Blackburn was placed under arrest without incident. Blackburn was booked for abuse of an elderly or disabled person and then lodged in the Butler County Justice Center.

LARGE CROWD GATHERS OUTSIDE HOME WHILE POLICE EXECUTE SEARCH WARRANT Officers were reportedly taunted by individuals while executing a search warrant earlier this week in Steele.

Steele Chief of Police Billy Joe Stanfield says that the warrant was served at an area residence on Wednesday.

At the residence, officers made contact with 31 year old Thomas Chris Jones who had an active arrest warrant through Pemiscot County charging him with burglary 1st, assault 3rd, unlawful use of weapon, and unlawful use of a firearm.

During the search, officers seized suspected crack cocaine, ecstasy pills, marijuana, and methamphetamine.

A warrant has been issued on Jones charging him with trafficking drugs 2nd degree and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

Stanfield says that during the execution of the search warrant a large crowd began to gather on the street and several individuals began taunting the police. Other law enforcement agencies then responded to assist the officers that were on scene.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE SEARCHING FOR MAN ACCUSED OF DAMAGING PROPERTY AT TRAIN DEPOT A man is being sought in connection to damage at a Poplar Bluff landmark.

Officials with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tell KWOC News that police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man who is accused of damaging property at the Poplar Bluff Historic Train Depot.

MAN SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS INCARCERATION ON STATUTORY SODOMY CHARGE A judge has sentenced a Stoddard County man on a sodomy charge.

Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Russell Oliver tells KWOC News that Christopher Noble, of Dexter, was found guilty of 1st degree statutory sodomy in early June.

Earlier this week, Noble was sentenced by Judge Scott Horman to 20 years incarceration.

AREA PARK RANGER ADVISING EVERYONE TO STAY SAFE DURING THE HEAT THIS WEEKEND Many people will be looking to beat the heat this weekend at Lake Wappapello and Park Ranger Andrew Jefferson with the US Army Corps of Engineers wants to remind everyone to stay safe while doing so.

With the heat and humidity expected over the weekend, here are a few safety tips that you can do at Wappapello Lake. Number one we have three beaches, Redman Creek, People's Creek, and Rockwood Point Beach. Also we have the visitor center. If you are getting too hot please come in and cool off, it doesn't cost anything. The Visitor Center hours are Sundays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Also while you are at the Lake this Saturday, stop by the Visitor Center and check out a couple of programs that are going to be taking place. The programs will start at 11 a.m. and also at 1:30 p.m. They will be bringing out a few small animals to show what they have available there, this program does not cost anything, it is free to attend. It will take place at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitor Center which is located at the South End of the dam at 11 a.m. and also at 1:30 p.m. The programs normally lasts about an hour. And as we always close out throughout all of our safety messages, life jackets worn, nobody mourns.

TWO MONTH LONG BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT BEGINNING TODAY IN NEW MADRID COUNTY Route U in New Madrid County will be closed over the next two months so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform a bridge replacement.

The section of roadway to be closed is located from County Road 725 to County Road 731.

Weather permitting, work will begin today, with the road re-opening on Friday, September 22nd.

FEMA DISASTER RECOVERY CENTER OPENING TODAY IN WAYNE COUNTY

A FEMA Disaster Recovery Center is opening today in Wayne County.

The recovery center at the Greenville City Hall will offer in-person support to individuals and businesses in any of the 35 counties included in the Missouri federal disaster declaration.

Recovery specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Small Business Administration will be at the center to discuss assistance and to help anyone who needs information or assistance filing an application.

The center will be open from 9 am to 7 pm today and tomorrow as well as next Monday and Tuesday. The center will also be open Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm.

The center will close permanently at 7 pm on Tuesday, July 25^th.

METHAMPHETAMINE AND OVER $7,000 IN CASH FOUND DURING TRAFFIC STOP IN CLAY COUNTY

Three people are facing charges following a traffic stop Wednesday in Northeast Arkansas.

Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller tells KWOC News that deputies with the Clay County Sheriff's Department along with officers from the Piggott Police Department conducted the stop on a vehicle driven by Donald Grider.

Officers conducted a probation search of the vehicle and located approximately 3 ounces of suspected methamphetamine and over $7000 in cash.

Miller says that Grider attempted to flee the scene on foot before being apprehended.

Grider, along with two passengers identified as Macey Crowder and Bradley Moore, are facing charges of possession of controlled substances with intent to deliver.

Grider is also facing additional charges of fleeing and resisting arrest.

CARTER COUNTY AWARDED GRANT FOR DECONTAMINATING RECORDS DAMAGED DURING FLOOD

Carter County has been awarded a grant to help preserve records damaged during this year’s flooding.

Yesterday, Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft’s Local Records Division announced a grant for Carter County worth up to $100,000 to freeze dry and decontaminate records and documents submerged during the flash flood in the Van Buren courthouse in May.

In May, the Missouri State Archives and the Local Records Division spent approximately 420 hours on-site, assessing and air drying records officials needed to resume business immediately after the flood.

FEDERAL ASSISTANCE DEADLINE EXTENDED TO AUGUST 14^TH

The deadline for Missouri disaster survivors to register for federal assistance has been extended to Aug. 14^th.

FEMA disaster grants are available to homeowners and renters in the 35 designated counties including Butler, Carter, Dunklin, Pemiscot, Ripley, and Wayne.

Homeowners, renters or business owners, must register with FEMA to determine if they are eligible for federal assistance.

For more information, call 800-621-3362 between 6 am and 10 pm or go online to DisasterAssistance.gov.

Disaster assistance for individuals may include grants to help homeowners and renters with temporary housing, essential home repairs, personal property replacement, and serious disaster-related needs.

FEMA granted the extension at the request of Missouri Governor Eric Greitens, citing a continued flow of new applications for federal assistance in the wake of the severe storms and flooding between April 28^th and May 11^th.

The U.S. Small Business Administration has also extended its deadline to August 14^th to apply for low-interest disaster loans.

PIPE REPLACEMENT TO CAUSE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF ROUTE CC IN BUTLER COUNTY

Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation will be closing a portion of Route CC in Butler County today to perform a pipe replacement.

MoDOT officials tell KWOC News that Route CC will be closed between County Road 675 and County Road 686 today from 7:30 am to 4 pm.

WEATHER OFFICIALS SAY HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH SUNDAY EVENING Anyone planning to be outside over the next few days is being advised to take precautions for the high temperatures that will be hitting Southeast Missouri.

Warning Coordination Meteorologist Rick Shanklin with the National Weather Service says that heat indexes could top out at around 105 degrees. 

RICK SHANKLIN: 

An excessive heat watch means that a prolonged period of hot temperatures is expected, in which a dangerous situation of heat illnesses is possible. For a warning on the other hand, heat illnesses are not just possible but are likely for those who have prolonged exposure to the heat and humidity, whether outdoors or in an air-conditioned home or other place. For our region we expect heat indices to peek around 105 degrees each afternoon through Sunday, as high temperatures reach the mid-nineties combined with the high humidity. One key factor in heat exposure is the duration, therefore given this extended bout of heat and humidity, it’s especially important to follow these precautions: drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room when possible, and reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening whenever you can. Otherwise if outdoors, stay out of the Sun as much as possible and take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning and check up on relatives and neighbors. It's also vital that children or pets never be left in cars even for a few minutes. Remember, look before you lock.  

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory that will go into effect at noon today and continue through 7 pm on Sunday.

DWI SATURATION OPERATIONS SCHEDULED FOR SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol say that multiple DWI enforcement operations have been scheduled for the near future in Southeast Missouri.

Captain Jeffrey Vitale tells KWOC News that Troop E officers will be conducting three driving while intoxicated saturation enforcement operations in cooperation with local law enforcement agencies.

Vitale says that these operations enhance their efforts in removing impaired drivers from the highways.

Route H in Butler County will be temporarily closed today so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform a pipe replacement.

The section of roadway to be closed is located between County Road 255 and County Road 260.

Work is scheduled to be performed from 7:30 am to 4 pm.

ATHLETE PHYSICALS SCHEDULED FOR TOMORROW IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff High School and Junior High student athletes can get a free physical done Thursday at the High School.

Physicals will be conducted beginning at 5:30 pm on Thursday, July 20^th for athletes in the 7^th and 8^th grades, beginning at 6:30 for 9^th and 10^th grades, and beginning at 7:30 for 11^th and 12^th grades.

Poplar Bluff Athletic Director Kent Keith tells KWOC News that the MSHSAA Dead Period for Sports and Activities will be Saturday, July 22^nd through Sunday, July 30^th.

The first day of practice for High School Fall Sports is Monday, July 31^st and the first day of practice for Junior High Fall Sports is Monday, August 14^th.

ONE TEEN KILLED, ANOTHER SERIOUSLY INJURED, IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK IN IRON COUNTY

One teenager has died, while another has serious injuries, following a single vehicle wreck in Iron County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 16 year old male from Lesterville was driving on Route K, near Annapolis, Monday night when his vehicle ran off the side of the road, struck a tree, and overturned.

A passenger in the vehicle, 18 year old Dawson Danback, of Annapolis, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver suffered serious injuries and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

MAINTANCE UNDERWAY ON DUNKLIN COUNTY BIDGE

Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation say that maintenance is underway on a bridge in Dunklin County.

Route A in Dunklin County is being reduced to one lane between County Roads 525 and 526 for the maintenance.

Work will continue from 8 am to 3 pm both today and tomorrow.

GAS LEAK CAUSED BRIDGE IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS TO BE CLOSED YESTERDAY

A bridge on Highway 67 in Pocahontas was temporarily closed yesterday due to a natural gas leak.

The bridge was closed at approximately 5 pm after a construction crew struck a gas line in the area.

According to the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department, the bridge was reopened later Tuesday evening.

BRIDGE REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS ON HIGHWAY 80 IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

Route 80 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge repairs.

MoDOT officials say that the bridge is located over I-55 at Exit 58.

Work is set to be performed today from 7 am to 3 pm.

DANGEROUS HEAT WAVE POSSIBLE BEGINNING TOMORROW Weather officials are warning that Southeast Missouri could experience a dangerous heat wave beginning on Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service, an excessive heat watch is set to go in to effect Wednesday afternoon and continue through Sunday afternoon for much of Southeast Missouri.

Weather officials say that temperatures and humidity could rise to dangerously high levels for the area, with heat indices reaching the 100 to 105 degree range.

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Everyone is advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

NAME RELEASED OF MAN ARRESTED IN KENNETT MURDER

Updating a story we brought to you yesterday, authorities have released the name of the man arrested in connection to the death of a Kennett teenager.

According to authorities, 19 year old Andre Oliver, of Kennett, has been taken into custody on charges of 2^nd degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of weapon.

The charges stem from the death of 19 year old Akeem Nelson, of Kennett, last week.

BUTLER COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR PIPE REPLACEMENT

A Butler County road will be closed today for a pipe replacement.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route HH in Butler County will be closed today between County Roads 350 and 244 for the project.

Work is scheduled to be performed from 7:30 am to 4 pm today.

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO ARREST OF POPLAR BLUFF MAN ON FELONY MARIJUANA CHARGE

A traffic stop Saturday night in Poplar Bluff resulted in the arrest of an area man on felony marijuana charge.

KWOC News spoke with Poplar Bluff Police Detective Joey Woodruff about the arrest. 

JOEY WOODRUFF: 

On Saturday night about 9 pm, Patrolman Lemonds conducted a traffic stop in the 2500 Block of North Main Street. 

Upon making contact with the driver, who was identified as 20 year old Martrez Carter, of Poplar Bluff, Patrolman Lemonds could smell the odor of marijuana emitting from inside the vehicle. 

Lemonds conducted a search of the vehicle and located two baggies containing approximately 46 grams of suspected marijuana. 

Carter was placed under arrest and later lodged in the Butler County Justice Center on the charge of felony possession of marijuana.

TWO FLOWN TO SPRINGFIELD HOSPITAL FOLLOWING WRECK IN SHANNON COUNTY

Two women have been flown to a Springfield hospital following a wreck Monday morning in Shannon County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred at around 6:30 am Monday near Mountain View.

A vehicle, driven by 28 year old Tara Washburn, of Van Buren, ran off the side of Old Highway 60, struck a culvert and overturned.

Both Washburn and a passenger in the vehicle suffered serious injuries in the wreck.

NEELYVILLE TO RECEIVE NEARLY $5,900 FOR WASTEWATER COLLECTION AND TREATMENT SYSTEM

The city of Neelyville will be receiving nearly $5,900 in emergency funding from the Delta Regional Authority.

Officials with the Delta Regional Authority tell KWOC News that emergency funding is to restore the city’s municipal wastewater collection and treatment system.

Neelyville’s wastewater collection and treatment system is 30-years-old, and collects and processes waste from 161 homes and businesses in the city.

Storm water overflow and infiltration regularly overload the city’s system and contribute to sewer overflows that expose the public to e.coli and other harmful bacteria. The DRA funding will allow the city to purchase and install three pumps to ensure continuous operation of the system.

BRIDGE REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

Route 61 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform bridge repairs.

The section of Route 61 to be reduced is located between County Road 502 and East Outer Road 55.

Work is set to be done from 7 am to 4 pm today.

TWO SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS TO BEGIN TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFFPoplar Bluff motorists should be prepared for delays beginning today as two sidewalk improvement projects are scheduled to begin.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, both Business 60 and Business 67 will be reduced to one lane through mid September so contractor crews can perform the improvements.

Business 60 will be reduced between Business 67 and B Street, while Business 67 will be reduced between Pine Street and Route 53.

Work on both projects is scheduled to be performed from 6 am to 7 pm daily through September 18th.

ONE ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO KENNETT HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION Authorities in Kennett have arrested a man in connection to the death of a local teenager.

Officials with the Kennett Police Department tell KWOC News, that at around 11:30 pm Friday night, an officer was flagged down by a citizen who told the officer that there was a deceased person on his couch.

The officer found the victim, who was later identified as 19 year old Akeem Nelson of Kennett.

Officials say that a 19 year old man has been taken into custody on charges of 2nd degree murder, armed criminal action, and tampering with physical evidence. The identity of the man arrested has not been released.

This incident is still under investigation by the Kennett Police Department and the Dunklin County Major Case Squad, however officials say that no other arrests are expected to be made.

JACKSON POLICE SEARCHING FOR MISSING PERSON The Jackson Police Department is seeking the public’s help in finding a missing person.

According to the Jackson PD, 56 year old David Lee Bolen was last seen on June 21st at his residence.

Bolen is driving a white, 2004 Ford Ranger, extended cab, with Missouri License Plates 8PY-566. The vehicle has black spray painted wheels.

Officials say that Bolen is known to frequent the Wappapello Lake, Clearwater, and Piedmont areas.

Anyone with information on Bolen’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Jackson Police Department 573-243-3151 or your local law enforcement authorities.

WAYNE AND IRON COUNTIES ADDED TO DISASTER DECLERATION The federal disaster declaration has been expanded to two additional counties in Southeast Missouri.

Missouri Governor Eric Greitens says that FEMA has approved his request to expand assistance to eligible homeowners, renters and businesses in nine counties, including Iron and Wayne County.

Homeowners and renters who sustained damage or losses due to the flooding and severe storms can register for disaster assistance by calling FEMA toll-free at 800-621-3362 or by going online to www.DisasterAssistance.gov.

The FEMA Deadline to apply for assistance is August 1st.

TWO JAMAICA RESIDENTS KILLED IN NEW MADRID COUNTY WRECK Two Jamaica residents were killed in a single vehicle wreck this past weekend in Southeast Missouri.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the wreck occurred Saturday afternoon on Interstate 55 in New Madrid County.

A van, driven by 30 year old Mauricio Lopez, of Arcadia, Florida, had a tire blow out, causing the van to run off the side of the road and overturn.

One of the passengers, 56 year old Vanzola Warren, of Maggotty, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, was pronounced dead and taken to the New Madrid County Morgue. Another passenger, 48 year old Pansy Green-Whyte, also of Maggotty, was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Lopez suffered serious injuries and three other passengers received moderate injuries in the wreck.

PIEDMONT MAN FACING FELONY METH CHARGE A Piedmont man is facing a felony meth charge following his arrest on Friday.

According to the Highway Patrol, 60 year old Joseph Louis was taken into custody in Wayne County on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, Louis was held at the Wayne County Jail.

BOAT SINKS IN CLEARWATER LAKE Officials say that no one was injured when a boat caught fire and sank over the weekend in Clearwater Lake.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at around noon on Sunday near Webb Creek Marina.

The runabout boat caught fire after its engine backfired, and then sank while an attempt was made to tow it back to the marina.

NEW MEXICO MAN KILLED IN MOTORCYCLE WRECK IN PARAGOULD AREA

  A New Mexico man has died from injuries he received in a wreck Thursday morning in Paragould.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 60 year old Gerard Guziel, of Edgewood, New Mexico, was driving a motorcycle on US Highway 49 when a vehicle turned into his path, causing his motorcycle to collide with the passenger side of the vehicle.

Officials say that Guziel was pronounced dead at the scene.

  AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING SHOOTING IN CHARLESTON

  A man was found dead Thursday afternoon in Charleston.

According to authorities, 78 year old Joe Anderson, of Charleston, had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene in Whipple Park.

The death is under investigation and anybody who has information about the incident is being asked to contact the Charleston Department of Public Safety at 573-683-3737.

  MISSING WOMAN LOCATED IN MINER

  Updating a story we brought to you yesterday, a missing East Prairie woman has been found safe.

According to authorities, 72 year old Virgie Thomure was found in Miner.

An Endangered Silver Advisory was issued for Thomure after she told her sister that she was going to Paducah on July 4th, but never arrived.

  EVENT IN KENNETT RAISES OVER $2,000 FOR LOCAL CHARITIES

  An event held earlier this week in Kennett has raised over $2,000 for local charities.

Officials with the Kennett Police Department tell KWOC News that the 4th annual community charity dodgeball game was held Tuesday night at the Kennett High School Gymnasium.

A total of $2,130.50 was raised during the event, which will be split between local charities such as the Special Olympic groups, Leonard and Virgie’s Place, and Hope International.

  CITY OF POPLAR BLUFF SEEKING SEALED BIDS FOR WORKSHOP/STORAGE BUILDING

  The city of Poplar Bluff is seeking sealed bids for a workshop and storage building.

According to Poplar Bluff City Clerk Pamela Kearbey, the shed may be viewed at 2455 Roxie Road.

All bids should be sealed and delivered to the office of the City Clerk on or before 2 pm on Wednesday, July 26th. The envelope should be clearly marked “Bid on 30’ x 50’ Storage Building”.

  DUNKLIN COUNTY ROAD CLOSED EARLY NEXT WEEK

  Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation will be closing a Dunklin County road early next week.

According to MoDOT, Route 164 in Dunklin County will be closed from Route N to County Road 612 so crews can replace a pipe beneath the roadway.

Weather permitting, work will take place Monday and Tuesday, from 7 am to 4 pm each day.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION RELEASED ABOUT SHOOTING INVOLVING BUTLER COUNTY DEPUTY

  We are continuing to follow a story for you out of Butler County about a shooting involving a sheriff’s deputy.

Butler County Coroner Andy Moore tells KWOC News that an autopsy has been conducted on the man killed during the incident.

“On Tuesday night at approximately 7:30, the Butler County Coroner's Office was dispatched to a possible police involved shooting off of NN Highway in Butler County. Upon arriving at the scene on Rice Road, I pronounced Mr. Steven Scott, 48, of Poplar Bluff deceased. On Wednesday morning an autopsy was conducted and it was confirmed that Mr. Scott died as a result from gunshot wounds sustained in the incident.”

KWOC News spoke with Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs who said that the deputy had been called out to a home on Rice Road for a domestic situation.

Scott parked his vehicle behind the deputy’s cruiser. The deputy attempted to deescalate the situation, however Scott allegedly pulled out a gun. The deputy then began firing his weapon.

The incident is under investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave.

  ENDANGERED SILVER ADVISORY ISSUED FOR EAST PRAIRIE WOMAN

  An Endangered Silver Advisory has been issued for a missing East Prairie woman.

The Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office issued the advisory for 72 year old Virgie Thomure.

On July 4th, Thomure told her sister that she was going to Paducah. She is known to frequent Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, but never arrived.

Thomure is described as a white female, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 106 pounds, with brown or silver hair and brown eyes.

She reportedly has dementia and Alzheimer’s and could be in a Gray or Silver 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis bearing a Missouri license plate of WH3 F7B.

Anyone with information on Thomure’s whereabouts is asked to immediately dial 911 to contact the nearest law enforcement agency or call the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office at 573-683-2111.

  HEAT INDEX VALUES COULD REACH 105 DEGREES THIS AFTERNOON

  Officials with the National Weather Service say that Southeast Missouri is in for another hot day today.

According to the NWS, highs from 89 to 94 degrees, combined with relative humidity values near 50 percent will produce widespread heat index values above 100 degrees this afternoon.

An increase in cloud cover and a chance of showers and thunderstorms is expected throughout the day, which may briefly reduce heat index values in some areas.

Everyone is asked to keep an eye on those especially susceptible to the summer heat, including young children, persons with serious health issues, and pets. Do not leave children or pets in a hot car with closed windows in this heat.

  VAN BUREN TEENAGER ARRESTED ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE CHARGES

  A Van Buren teenager has been taken into custody in Butler County on a felony controlled substance charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 19 year old Krystal Freeze was arrested Wednesday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – prescription pills.

Freeze is also facing charges of possession of a controlled substance – marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, she was held at the Butler County Jail.

  SMALL NONFARM BUSINESSES IN MULTIPLE SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS COUNTIES NOW ELIGIBLE FOR DISASTER LOANS

  Small nonfarm businesses in 52 Missouri counties and as well as some neighboring counties in Arkansas are now eligible to apply for low-interest federal disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

These loans offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by rainfall and flooding that occurred from April 24th through May 11th.

The counties involved include Butler, Carter, Dunklin, New Madrid, Pemiscot, Ripley, Stoddard, and Wayne in Southeast Missouri and Clay, Greene, and Randolph Counties in Northeast Arkansas among many others.

The deadline to apply is March 6th, 2018.

NAME RELEASED OF MAN KILLED IN SHOOTING INVOLVING BUTLER COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTY

  Updating a story we brought to you this morning, the name has been released of a man killed in a shooting incident Tuesday evening that involved a Butler County Sheriff’s Deputy.

The man has been identified as 48 year old Steve Scott, of Poplar Bluff.

Few details about the incident have been released, however Butler County Coroner Andy Moore tells KWOC News that he was dispatched to an officer involved shooting off of Highway NN in Butler County.

The deputy had been called out to a domestic disturbance and the suspect was reportedly armed when the deputy arrived.

  TEENAGER SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WRECK NEAR KENNETT

  A teenager has suffered serious injuries in connection to a wreck near Kennett Tuesday evening.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 19 year old Breane VanVickle, of Whiteoak, Missouri, was driving on Missouri Highway 25 in Dunklin County when she struck the rear of a freightliner that was attempting to make a left turn.

VanVickle was seriously injured and taken to a Memphis hospital. No injuries were listed for the driver of the freightliner.

  HEAT INDEX VALUES TO GET OVER 100 DEGREES TODAY ACROSS SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

  Higher temperatures are hitting Southeast Missouri this week, and weather officials are warning that heat index values could top out at over 100 degrees today.

According to the National Weather Service, heat index values rose into the mid 90s on Tuesday and are expected to be more oppressive this afternoon, with heat index values ranging from 100 to 103 degrees across the area.

Weather officials say that the heat and humidity is expected to return again on Thursday, but increased chances for rain and cloud cover may help lower heat index values somewhat Thursday afternoon.

If you have to be outside today, keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and take frequent breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned shelter.

  DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND NONPROFITS TO REQUEST FEMA ASSISTANCE WITH INFRASTRUCTURE REPAIRS AND EXPENSES

  The deadline is quickly approaching for local governments and nonprofit agencies in 46 Missouri counties affected by the spring flooding to file their requests for federal assistance with repairs to roads, bridges and other public infrastructure, and emergency response costs.

According to the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency, Requests for Public Assistance must first be received by SEMA, processed, and then submitted to the Federal Emergency Management Agency by July 14th.

More than 220 county and local governments; school, sewer and road districts; and nonprofit agencies have filed Requests for Public Assistance, which are a requirement to receive FEMA assistance.

Potential applicants with questions should call SEMA’s Public Assistance Program at 573-526-9234 as soon as possible.

  SIKESTON WOMAN WINS $100,000 FROM SCRATCHERS TICKET

  A clerk’s suggestion resulted in a $100,000 lottery win for a Sikeston woman.

42 year old Lauren Poole, won the prize from a scratchers ticket she purchased on June 17th. Poole says that a clerk at the store talked her into spending a little more on the $10 ‘$1,000 Frenzy’ ticket.

She later scratched off the ticket while on a trip to Colorado and found out she had won $100,000.

She plans on using her winnings to purchase a car and invest.

  PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT UNDERWAY IN RIPLEY COUNTY

  Route DD in Ripley County will be closed through next Thursday as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

Officials say the section of roadway being closed is located from Route P to the end of state maintenance. During the repairs, the work zone will be open to local traffic only.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 am to 4 pm daily through Thursday, July 20th.

MAN ARRESTED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI ON ATF AND US MARSHAL’S SERVICE WARRANTS

An Arkansas man was taken into custody Monday afternoon on multiple felony warrants.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 55 year old Glen Yandell, of Knobel, Arkansas, was arrested shortly after 4 pm in Ripley County on a felony warrant from the bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

Yandell also had a felony warrant from the US Marshal’s Service for a weapons offense.

Following the arrest, he was held at the Butler County Jail.

SIKESTON MAN CONVICTED OF ASSAULT AND ARMED CRIMINAL ACTION CHARGES IN CONNECTION TO 2016 SHOOTING

  A Sikeston man has been convicted of multiple charges in connection to a February 2016 shooting.

Sergeant Jon Broom with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that 31 year old Chester Miguel Brown has been found guilty of the charges of assault 2nd, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, and tampering with evidence.

Brown’s sentencing was scheduled for September.

Broom says that the conviction stems from the shooting of David Trice Jr. on February 10th, 2016. Trice was shot 5 times during the incident and spent 6 weeks in ICU.

  2017 MULES BASKETBALL CAMP TO BEGIN TOMORROW AT POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL

  The 2017 Mules Basketball Camp is scheduled to begin tomorrow at the Poplar Bluff High School.

The camp is for students in 1st through 8th grade and will run from 11 am to 1:30 pm on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The cost is $25 per camper and $20 for additional campers from the same family.

Attendees will be instructed in the drills and fundamentals that have made Mules Basketball a successful program, will special emphasis on shooting fundamentals. Time will also be devoted to game competitions and scrimmages.

  STATE OFFICIALS SEEKING PUBLIC’S INPUT FOR OAK RIDGE CONSERVATION AREA

  State officials are asking for the public’s input about a conservation area in Stoddard County.

The Missouri Department of Conservation is in the multi-year process of updating Conservation Area Management Plans, and is seeking input on how the Oak Ridge Conservation Area is important to area residents.

The MDC is inviting comments from recreational users, neighboring landowners, conservation groups, elected officials, and any other interested persons or groups.

  FIVE ARRESTED IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS FOR CRYSTAL METH

  Five people have been taken into custody in Northeast Arkansas for crystal meth.

Greene County Sheriff David Carter tells KWOC News that Larry Waters, Danny Peyton, Brandy Gilbee, Nicholas Harmon, and Jonathan Dees were all recently arrested for possession of crystal methamphetamine.

Carter did not say if the arrests were connected to each other.

  MODOT TO CLOSE STODDARD COUNTY ROAD FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS

  Route F in Stoddard County will be closed beginning today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform pavement repairs.

Officials say that the section of roadway to be closed is located from Route 60 to Route J.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday, July 20th from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm, daily. During the project, the work zone will be open to local traffic only.

  PAVEMENT REPAIRS SET TO BEGIN TODAY ON ROUTE P IN RIPLEY COUNTY

  Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation will be in Ripley County beginning today to perform pavement repairs on Route P.

Work is scheduled to take place today through Thursday, July 20th from 7 am to 4 pm each day.

During the repairs, Route P will be closed, except for local traffic, from Route 142 to the state line.

  BRIDGE REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS THIS WEEK IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

  Route M in New Madrid County will be reduced with a 10-foot width restriction today and tomorrow as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge repairs.

The work zone will be located from Route 61 to the I-55 east outer road.

Work is scheduled for 7 am to 4 pm both today and tomorrow.

AREA MAN TO BE SENTENCED IN AUGUST FOLLOWING GUILTY PLEA ON MURDER CHARGE

  A sentencing hearing has been set for next month after a Poplar Bluff man entered a guilty plea on a murder charge.

According to Missouri Case Net, William Pickard pleaded guilty last week to felony charges of murder 2nd degree, assault 1st degree, and armed criminal action.

Pickard was arrested in August of 2015 in connection to the death of Joshua Sharar in Bollinger County.

Pickard’s sentencing was scheduled for August 3rd.

  SIKESTON TEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

  A Sikeston teenager was seriously injured Saturday afternoon in a single vehicle wreck in New Madrid County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the 16 year old male was travelling on US 61 near New Madrid when his vehicle ran off the side of the road, struck an embankment, and overturned.

The teen suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was taken to an area hospital.

  UNKNOWN AMOUNT OF DIESEL DISCHARGED FROM SUNKEN BOAT IN MISSISSIPPI RIVER

  An unknown amount of diesel was discharged over the weekend from a sunken vessel in the Mississippi River.

Officials with the United States Coast Guard tell KWOC News that authorities were notified early Sunday morning of the towing vessel Eric Haney sinking on bank of the Upper Mississippi River near Cairo, Illinois.

There were nine people aboard the towing vessel who evacuated the ship before it sank with no reports of injuries.

An unknown amount of diesel was discharged from the vessel, which officials say has been contained with containment boom and divers have successfully secured the source of the diesel fuel discharge. Water and shoreline assessments have been conducted and crews observed no further signs of pollution.

Officials say the cause of the incident is under investigation.

  TWO ARRESTED IN BUTLER COUNTY ON METH CHARGE

  Two women were arrested Friday night in Butler County on a meth charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 30 year old Kristy Scott and 27 year old Stephanie Carson, both of Poplar Bluff, were each taken into custody on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Both women are also facing a charge of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following their arrest, the women were transported to the Butler County Jail.

  POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON FLEEING CHARGE

  A Poplar Bluff man was taken into custody Saturday on a fleeing charge.

According to authorities, 43 year old Bryan Jackson was arrested shortly after 4 pm Saturday afternoon on charges including resisting arrest by fleeing, driving while intoxicated, and driving while revoked.

Following the arrest, Jackson was held at the Butler County Jail.

  DEPLOYMENT CEREMONY HELD IN KENNETT FOR 1137TH MILITARY POLICE COMPANY

  Friends, families, supporters and veterans were all in attendance for a deployment ceremony held Sunday in Kennett.

The ceremony at the Kennett High School was for the 1137th Military Police Company, who will be deploying to Guantanamo Bay Naval Base.
