ONE KILLED IN WAYNE COUNTY WRECK

  A Piedmont man died Wednesday following a wreck in Wayne County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 82 year old Willis White was driving on Missouri Highway 49 Wednesday afternoon, when he crossed the centerline and was struck by a vehicle.

White was taken to a Poplar Bluff hospital, where he later died. The driver of the second vehicle suffered moderate injuries and was transported to an area hospital.

  FIERY WRECK RESULTS IN ONE DEATH IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

  Two 18-wheelers were involved in a fatal wreck Wednesday in Northeast Arkansas.

Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller tells KWOC News that shortly after noon on Wednesday, Clay County 911 received calls of an accident on Highway 135 and Highway 90.

According to the Arkansas State Police, one of the vehicles ran a stop sign and hit the second in the passenger side. The second vehicle then ran off the highway and struck a power pole. Both vehicles caught on fire.

The driver of the first vehicle, 36 year old Aaron Barks, of Jackson, was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Paul Hoggard.

The driver of the second vehicle was injured and taken to a Paragould hospital.

  SUPPLIES BEING COLLECTED FOR FLOOD CLEAN UP

  Supplies are being collected for flood clean up in Poplar Bluff.

According to AmeriCorps director Becky Winters, a collection and distribution center has been set up in the old Doctors Hospital on West Pine Street in Poplar Bluff.

The center will be open for collections this week from 9 am to 6 pm daily. They will be open for distribution of cleaning supplies on Friday and Saturday during the same hours.

On Friday there will be an additional collection point located in the parking lot of the Poplar Bluff Holiday Inn. A truck will be parked there to receive cleaning goods from noon to 5:30 pm.

The truck will take cleaning supplies on Saturday to the Southern Bank facility in Van Buren for distribution of supplies to anyone affected by the flood. The supplies will be available beginning at 9:30 am. Southern Bank will have food available for lunch also.

Supplies being collected include bleach, mops, buckets, kitchen gloves, dawn dishwashing liquid, box fans, paper towels, and toilet paper.

Carter County authorities say that donations of cleaning supplies, hygiene items, and bottled water are also being accepted at the Assembly of God in Van Buren.

  FLOOD RELIEF CENTER SET UP AT DONIPHAN FAIRGROUNDS

  A disaster relief center is up and running in Ripley County.

The center has been set up at the Doniphan Fairgrounds and is distributing food, water, hygiene products, and cleaning supplies from 8 am to 8 pm daily.

Officials say they will also be establishing mobile distribution points in the more remote areas. If you need any assistance for cleaning or labor crews, you can contact West Point Church at 573-996-2350.

Ripley County residents in need of emergency housing can contact His Place at 573-707-3278.

In Butler County, Pastor Kirk with the Rescue Mission is asking for food item donations that will be used to cook meals for flood victims and volunteers. Some of the items they need include milk, flower, canned vegetables, rice, and bacon. Items can be dropped off at 400 South Broadway in Poplar Bluff.

  ANOTHER LEVEE BREACH DISCOVERED IN POPLAR BLUFF

  A Poplar Bluff police officer discovered another levee breach Wednesday morning.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on Wednesday morning, police officials learned that the high water level in the Hampton Court area was hindering the normal operation of a sewage lift station, leaving residents without sewer service

Lieutenant Josh Stewart discovered a breach in a levee on County Road 605 near County Road 607 that was causing water to flow back into the city and preventing the activation of the lift station.

Members of the Poplar Bluff Police, Fire, and Street Departments decided to sandbag the breach in an attempt to correct the sewer issue.

With the assistance the Butler County Highway Department, they were successful in closing the breach. Shortly after, the water receded and allowed employees to place the pumps back in service.

  CITY OF PIEDMONT UNDER BOIL WATER ORDER

  Piedmont officials say the city is under a boil water order.

According to the Piedmont Fire Department, they will be available from 8 am to 8 pm for residents to get water. The water is available to anyone that is in need of drinking water.

The Fire Department is asking residents to conserve water and only get what is needed. The fire station is located at 117 West Fire Street in Piedmont.

  WAPPAPELLO LAKE DISCHARGE DROPPED TO 16,000 CFS

  Wappapello Lake officials say that the discharge at the lake has dropped to 16,000 cubic feet per second.

The lake stage was at 396.7 feet this morning.

Andrew Jefferson with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers tells KWOC News that with predicted rainfall of 2 and a half to 4 inches, the lake would rise again to around 399 feet.

Jefferson says that the Corps of Engineers is allowing people to view the flooding by driving to the business center. Flood viewers can also go to Little Brushy Church at the corner of RA and T Highways where they can be shuttled to Redmond Creek Landing between 9 am to 4 pm today.

According to the National Weather Service, Clearwater Lake crested at slightly over 568 feet yesterday and was down to 567.74 feet this morning.

  RIVER LEVELS UPDATE

  River levels are projected to rise again in some places due to today’s rainfall.

According to the National Weather Service, Black River in Poplar Bluff was at 16.41 feet this morning and is forecast to rise to 19 feet tomorrow morning. In Pocahontas, the river was at 26.34 feet this morning and in Corning it was at 15.83 feet.

For Current River, both Van Buren and Doniphan were both the flood stage this morning. The Current River in Doniphan is forecast to rise back above the flood stage to 14.5 feet late Friday night or early Saturday morning.

For St. Francis River in Patterson, the river was at 25.37 feet this morning and is forecast to rise to 29.5 feet late Friday night or early Saturday morning. In Fisk, the river has crested at 26.13 feet and had dropped to 25.45 feet this morning.

In St. Francis, Arkansas the river was at 25.02 feet this morning and is forecast to rise to around 25.5 feet today.

  SHELTERS STILL AVAILABLE IN BOTH SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

  Shelters have been set up in both Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas to aid residents affected by flooding.

A shelter has been set up at the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff and is accepting residents from Butler, Carter, Ripley, and Wayne Counties. SEMO Red Cross says that shelters have also been set up at the West Plains First Baptist Church, the Van Buren Youth and Community Center, and Marquand Zion High School.

In Northeast Arkansas, the Red Cross has set shelters up at the Corning Community Center and the Walnut Ridge Community Center, and Pocahontas Community Center.

Authorities in Lawrence County, Arkansas are urging for residents in the Portia, Clover Bend, and Coffman areas to evacuate.

  ROAD CLOSURES CONTINUE THROUGHOUT SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

  Many roads are still flooded in Southeast Missouri.

Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation say that motorists are urged to stop and turn around if they discover a roadway has high water.

HARVIELL WOMAN FOUND DEAD

  A Butler County woman was found dead Tuesday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 69 year old Barbara Smithson, of Harviell, drove onto a water covered Highway 158 Sunday afternoon

Smithson was found in a ditch, one mile east of Harviell, Tuesday morning after water had receded.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

  MAN APPREHENDED FOLLOWING BANK ROBBERY IN POPLAR BLUFF

  A man has been taken into custody in connection to a Bank Robbery on Tuesday in Poplar Bluff.

Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whiteley spoke to KWOC News and says that the suspect has been identified as Daniel Potter.

"At 2:28 on Tuesday, we had a 911 call of a robbery at the Federal Credit Union on 5th and Oak. Our officers were on scene at 2:30, began an area search while getting statements and evidence from the robbery. During the course of the investigation we were able to identify the suspect as Daniel Potter.

He had tried to check into the Black River Coliseum during the flood. Because of a criminal history past, he was turned away from there and had stayed the night before at the Rescue Mission. But then about 15 minutes later, the subject was spotted, took off running. Bad luck for him, because of the flood we had a lot of officers in the area and he was apprehended just a short time later and taken into custody.

He has been processed here at the PD. Mr. Potter will be charged with armed robbery and the FBI will be here shortly, and I’m sure they will be picking the case up from there federally."

  BODY FOUND NEAR HIGHWAY 53 HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS POPLAR BLUFF MAN

  Officials have identified a body that was found in a vehicle off of Highway 53 on Monday.

According to officials, 60 year old Kevin Compton, of Poplar Bluff, drove into the flooded roadway, around 2 miles south of Poplar Bluff, and was swept off into a ditch.

He was pronounced dead Monday night by Butler County Coroner Andy Moore.

  NATIONAL GUARD SANDBAGGING ROUTE 60 AT FISK

  The Missouri National Guard was in Butler County last night.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the National Guard was sandbagging along Route 60 at Fisk from Route DD to Route 60/51 junction.

Officials say that the levee is a proactive measure to keep the route open despite a rising St. Francis River.

MoDot does not have plans to close Route 60 as of right now, however travelers should use caution in this area and expect a lane reduction on Eastbound Route 60.

In addition, the eastbound Route 60/51 ramp is currently closed.

  RIVER LEVELS UPDATE

  River levels are projected to rise again following rains over the next couple of days.

According to the National Weather Service, Black River in Poplar Bluff was at 18.7 feet this morning and is forecast to drop to below 18 feet by tomorrow morning before rising again to 19 feet Friday morning. In Pocahontas, Arkansas, the river was at 28.52 feet this morning.

For Current River, in Van Buren, the river is down to 9.27 feet and is expected to get back up to 13.6 feet on Friday, which is below the flood stage of 20 feet. In Doniphan the river was at 13.66 feet this morning and is forecast to fall to under eight feet today, before rising to 14.5 feet late Friday Night or early Saturday morning.

For St. Francis River in Patterson, the river is expected to stay at the moderate flood stage over the next few days. It was down to 26.3 feet this morning and is forecast to rise to 29.5 feet late Friday night or Early Saturday morning. In Fisk, the river is already above the major flood stage of 26 feet and is expected to continue to rise to around 28 feet tonight.

In St. Francis, Arkansas the river is holding steady at around 24.61 feet, however it is forecast to rise to around 27.5 feet tomorrow morning.

  WAPPAPELLO LAKE HAS CRESTED FOR NOW

  Wappapello Lake has crested for now.

Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers tell KWOC News that the lake crested yesterday and has started to fall. The lake stage was at 397.52 this morning.

The current outflow is 20,000 cubic feet a second combined between the main spillway and the auxiliary spillway.

Officials say that the lake may rise again following today and tomorrow’s rainfall.

Corps of Engineer officials in Little Rock say that releases at Clearwater Lake were decreased to 3,800 cubic feet per second through the conduit and about 700 cubic feet per second across the overflow spillway.

When flows over the spillway increases, releases from the conduit will be reduced to continue a total release of no more than 5,000 cubic feet per second, if possible.

Officials say that people at Piedmont and Poplar Bluff will not see any resulting rise in the Black River from these releases.

However, more rain could cause spillway releases to increase. The lake was at 568.06 this morning and was expected to crest today, but that could change with the additional rainfall.

BODY FOUND IN SUBMERGED VEHICLE IN BUTLER COUNTY

  Officials in Butler County tell KWOC News that a body of an elderly man was found in a submerged vehicle Monday.

The name of the man found has not been released, however officials say that the vehicle was found in a ditch in the area of Highway 53.

We will bring you more information on this story as it becomes available.

Shelters are also available at the West Plains First Baptist Church, Ellington R-II High School, His Place Fellowship in Doniphan, the Van Buren Youth and Community Center, and the Winona Police Department.

In Northeast Arkansas, the Red Cross has set shelters up at the Corning Community Center as well as the Randolph County Nursing Home and Pocahontas Community Center in Pocahontas. Officials say that a shelter will be opening at 9 am this morning at the Walnut Ridge School.

In addition, many are still without power this morning. According to Entergy Arkansas, 351 customers in Clay County are currently without power.

The Clay County Electric Cooperative announced last night that power was shut off for all members in the Corning area and those served by the Corning Substation due to repairs. Officials have not said if power has been restored.

  FLOODING CAUSES MULTIPLE COMMUNITY EVACUATIONS

  Multiple communities were evacuated Monday following increased flood waters from this past weekend’s storms.

The south side of Poplar Bluff was placed under a voluntary evacuation after a levee broke on Black River.

A voluntary evacuation is also underway in areas of Wayne County, and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department says that their office cannot accept any calls from cell phones at this time, however they can receive calls from land lines.

Downtown Doniphan was also flooded Monday, affecting numerous businesses. Missouri Governor Eric Greitens was in Van Buren yesterday to meet with local authorities. Greitens tweeted that he spoke with President Trump about the flooding, who said he's behind us, and here to help the people of Missouri.

In Reynolds County, residents in the Logan Creek area had been asked to voluntarily evacuate. A boil water order is also in effect in Ellington and the Ellington Fire Department says they will be giving out supplies from 7 am to 7 pm today.

In Northeast Arkansas, a mandatory evacuation was put in place for the Success area as well as the east side of Pocahontas.

Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson has announced he will be surveying storm damage in Randolph and Sharp Counties today.

  WATER REACHES OVER AUXILIARY SPILLWAY AT WAPPAPELLO LAKE

  Water has overtaken the auxiliary spillway at Wappapello Lake.

According to Jennifer Morse with the US Army Corps of Engineers, water started coming over the Auxiliary spillway at Wappapello Lake Monday morning. The lake is now predicted to crest at 399.7 feet on Wednesday.

The Corps of Engineers is also reporting that T Highway at Wappapello began to fail at around 7:30 pm last night due to the flooding. A part of T Highway had washed away by this morning.

At Clearwater, officials say that the auxiliary spillway was activated Monday afternoon. This morning the lake was at elevation 567.5 feet. The Corps of Engineers said yesterday that 97 percent of the Lake’s flood storage capacity was being used.

The lake is expected to crest at about 571 feet on Wednesday if there is no additional rain.

  POPLAR BLUFF SHOOTING SUSPECT TURNS HIMSELF IN

  A suspect in a Poplar Bluff shooting has turned himself in.

Josh Stewart with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that 34 year old Michael Jackson turned himself in to Poplar Bluff Police Monday evening.

Jackson allegedly shot into a vehicle four times with a handgun on Friday. The victim’s vehicle had four people inside it at the time of the shooting, including two children.

The shooting occurred on Highway 60, just east of Highway 67

  RIVER LEVELS UPDATE

  River levels have crested at some places but are still rising at some others in Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas.

According to the National Weather Service, Black River in Poplar Bluff crested at 21.96 feet yesterday and is currently at around 20.2 feet. In Pocahontas, Arkansas, the river is at around 27 feet and forecast to rise to 29.5 feet Friday.

For Current River, in Van Buren, the river reached 37.2 feet on Sunday, and has since dropped to around 16 feet. In Doniphan as the river crested at 33.13 feet Monday and is now down to just over 26 feet.

For St. Francis River in Patterson, the river topped out at 37.05 feet on Sunday, and is now down to around 28.5 feet. In Fisk, the river is at around 21 feet and rising and is forecast to reach the record of 28 feet late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

In St. Francis, Arkansas the river is forecast to rise to 27.5 feet Thursday morning and is currently at around 24.7 feet.

The National Weather Service in Paducah is saying that another one to three inches of rainfall is predicted for Wednesday and Thursday which will cause revised forecasts for river levels.

  DEXTER TEEN ARRESTED ON TERRORIST THREAT WARRANT

  A Dexter teenager has been taken into custody in Stoddard County.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 18 year old Jonah Reiker was recently arrested on a warrant for 1st degree terrorist threat.

Officials say that no bond has been set and Reiker remained in jail as of this morning. Additional information about the warrant has not been released

  MISSOURI TREASURER ACTIVATES DISASTER ASSISTANCE RELIEF PROGRAM

  Missouri State Treasurer Eric Schmitt has activated a disaster relief program for Missouri small businesses and farms impacted by the recent flooding.

The Harmed-area Emergency Loan Priority system authorizes 24-hour approval of support for low-interest loans obtained through participating lenders.

Schmitt says that Missouri-based small businesses with up to 99 employees are eligible to receive a loan through participating institutions with the support of the Missouri Linked Deposit Program.

An extensive list of participating lenders and program eligibility guidelines can be found online at treasurer.mo.gov/LinkedDeposit.

The Missouri Small Business & Technology Development Centers have also released disaster assistance guidelines and additional information regarding US Small Business Administration loans which are available at missouribusiness.net.

SEVERE WEATHER AND FLOODING DAMAGES MULTIPLE RESIDENCES

According to authorities, a house and barn were damaged as well as several trees uprooted, just north of Matthews. A mobile home was also reportedly destroyed near Wardell in Pemiscot County.

In addition, many are without power this morning. Ameren Missouri is reporting just under 700 outages in Southeast Missouri, mostly located in Pemiscot County.

According to Entergy Arkansas, 1,364 customers in Clay County are currently without power.

  MISSOURI GOVERNOR ERIC GREITENS DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY

Missouri Governor Eric Greitens declared a State of Emergency Friday ahead of the severe storms that hit across the state this past weekend.

All specialized rescue teams and swift water teams have been deployed, which include assets from the Missouri National Guard, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Missouri Task Force 1, the Missouri Department of Conservation, and Fire Mutual Aid Resources.

As of yesterday afternoon these teams have conducted 111 evacuations and 136 separate rescue operations. Many of the rescues were located in Southeast Missouri. Officials in Butler County say that there are multiple water rescue operations currently underway on County Road 607.

Carter County Sheriff Richard Stephens says that rescue boats are working major impact areas attempting to inspect residences to ensure all occupants have made it out safely. Residents have also been evacuated from parts of Fremont. Stephens also says that the city of Van Buren implemented a 6pm to 8 am curfew.

The Doniphan Police Department says that all phone services were taken down Sunday for Ripley County. A satellite phone service was established for the Doniphan Police Department anyone with an emergency is asked to call 573-917-4604 or 573-917-4605. No time table was given for when service would resume. In Wayne County, a voluntary evacuation was requested for those in the area of Red Wood Acre.

  WEEKEND STORMS CAUSE FLOODING THROUGHOUT SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

  The heavy rains we received this past weekend has caused flooding problems on rivers throughout Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas.

According to the National Weather Service, Black River in Poplar Bluff is forecast to hit 21.5 feet sometime today. The normal flood stage in Poplar Bluff is 16 feet. For Black River in Pocahontas, Arkansas, the river is forecast to reach 29.5 feet by Thursday.

For Current River, in Van Buren, the river reached 37.2 feet on Sunday, well above the previous record of 29 feet. It has since dipped down to under 35 feet. A record has also been set for Current River in Doniphan as the river is forecast to reach 36 feet today. The previous record in Doniphan is 26.8 feet.

For St. Francis River in Patterson, the river topped out at 37.05 feet on Sunday, higher than the previous record of 35.8 feet. In St. Francis, Arkansas the river is forecast to rise to 27.5 feet late Wednesday, just short of the record 28.2 feet.

  WAPPAPELLO LAKE EXPECTED TO CREST AT OVER 400 FEET ON WEDNESDAY

  Both Wappapello Lake and Clearwater Lake have risen dramatically due to this weekend’s storms.

According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, on Sunday Wappapello Lake had risen to 382.52 feet relative to the National Geodetic Vertical Datum and is forecast to crest at approximately 405 feet on Wednesday without any additional rainfall in the watershed.

The discharge at the auxiliary spillway will be increased to 15,000 cubic feet per second today. According to Corps Officials, the Lake will start topping auxiliary spillway at 6:30 am.

At Clearwater Lake, on Sunday the elevation was at 555.87 feet with 61 percent of its flood storage capacity being used. The lake is expected to crest at about 571 feet on Thursday, if there is no additional rain.

Releases through Clearwater Dam’s conduit were increased yesterday to 4,000 cubic feet per second. Officials say spillway releases may increase to as much as 10,000 c.f.s. The largest release ever made from Clearwater was 4,000 c.f.s. in 2011.

The Army Corps of Engineers Clearwater Project Office has closed River Road Park and park rangers are asking campers to move to Piedmont Park as a precautionary measure because of the possibility of increased releases.

  US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS TO BEGIN PHASE 2 OF FLOODFIGHT EFFORTS THIS MORNING

  The Memphis District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expecting to begin Phase II floodfight activities this morning.

According to the Corps of Engineers the activities were expected to begin at around 7 am in the Missouri Bootheel and northeast Arkansas due to high river stages on the St. Francis River.

The area of current or possible flooding the Memphis District is focusing on is located in the Dexter and Kennett areas on the St. Francis River. Communities that may be affected include Fisk and St. Francis.

As of 2 pm Sunday, approximately 18 Army Corps of Engineer field personnel were mobilizing to begin the floodfight response. The field personnel will conduct patrols each day from 6 am until 6:30 pm, checking the condition of levees and other flood protection structures and looking for problems like water seepage under levees.

  NUMEROUS ROADS FLOODED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

  Numerous roads have been flooded in Southeast Missouri in connection to the weekend storms.

Anyone who is driving is should not drive on high water covered roadways and should never move or drive around barricades placed on roadways due to high water.

Barricades are a warning designed to protect you from an unsafe condition. You can put yourself at serious risk if you proceed into a flooded section of road.

  POPLAR BLUFF POLICE SEARCHING FOR SHOOTING SUSPECT

  Police in Poplar Bluff are searching for a suspect in connection to a shooting Friday night.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on Friday officers responded to a reported shooting which took place on Highway 60 just East of Highway 67.

34 year old Michael Jackson allegedly shot into a vehicle four times with a handgun. The victim’s vehicle had four people inside it at the time of the shooting, including two children.

Police say Jackson should be considered armed and dangerous and anyone with information as to his whereabouts is urged to contact the Poplar Bluff Police Department at 573-785-5776.

FLASH FLOOD WATCH TO GO INTO EFFECT TONIGHT IN POPLAR BLUFFMore rain will be hitting Southeast Missouri tonight and throughout the weekend and weather officials say that we could be looking at possible flooding.

KWOC News spoke with Rick Shanklin, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky, who says there is possibility of severe weather in addition to the flooding.

Rick Shanklin:

We have two major weather systems affecting Southeast Missouri this weekend. The first being tonight and into Saturday morning and the second being Sunday and Sunday evening. With the system moving in tonight we do have an enhanced risk or a level three risk of severe weather including the possibility of damaging thunderstorm winds, large hail, and even tornadoes. We expect the thunderstorms mainly to be scattered, widely scattered even, this afternoon, if they do develop at all this afternoon or early evening. However if we do see thunder storms develop they certainly could become severe given the level of instability across Southeast Missouri. We have again a second threat of severe thunderstorms for Sunday and Sunday evening. We're still taking a look at that to see how great that threat is, but certainly that threat is there as well. And in addition we have of course the heavy rain and the flooding potential for this weekend. We’re forecasting a total of around 6 or 7 inches of rain across Southeast Missouri and that's certainly could lead to some problems, both flash flooding and eventually even some flooding of some of the rivers across Southeast Missouri and that's why we have a flash flood watch in effect from this evening through Sunday night.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route N in Butler County, Route Y and Route M in Carter County, Route KK in Wayne County, and Route H in Bollinger County are all closed this morning due to flooding.

TEENAGER SERIOULSY INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK SOUTH OF DEXTER A Bernie teenager has been taken to an area hospital following a single vehicle wreck Wednesday night.

According to the Highway Patrol, the sixteen year old was driving on Missouri Highway 25, around three miles south of Dexter, when his vehicle hydroplaned while attempting to pass another vehicle.

The teen’s vehicle then ran into a ditch and overturned.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE DEPARTMENT WARNS OF EMAIL SCAM The Poplar Bluff Police Department says that they have been receiving reports of an email scam.

According to officials, the scam works by the recipient receiving an email message that appears to be a shipping notification. It says that the postal service has been unable to deliver a package. In order to claim it, the recipient needs to download the attached confirmation form and take it to your local post office.

This is a scam and the file that’s downloaded is actually a virus. Typically, these viruses phish for personal and banking information on your machine.

POPLAR BLUFF SUPERINTENDENT SAYS THAT GRIEF COUNSELORS ARE AVAILABLE FOLLOWING STUDENT’S DEATH A Poplar Bluff High School student reportedly died earlier this week.

Poplar Bluff R-1 Superintendent, Scott Dill, has spoken with KWOC News and says that grief counselors are available for students.

Scott Dill:

Late Wednesday evening we were notified that one of our students had been involved in a situation resulting in loss of life. At this time it is alleged that the student took his own life. Obviously whenever we lose a member of our school family, it's a tragic situation for everyone involved. Our hearts go out to the friends and family of those impacted but to be perfectly honest there's not a student or teacher at that facility that hasn't been impacted by this and so we do have our grief counselors available today to assist as needed. One of our goals is to help the students work through this process. We do that by assisting on an individual basis. Also just by providing as normal a day as we can for the kids. It is tragic and it is disruptive and it changes our world but our kids need to know that it's all right to mourn, it's okay to be sad, and but if we need to get back on track our lives have to go on. We recognize that in our modern society our kids are under tremendous pressures and the greatest asset that any of our kids have are the healthy relationships they have with the adults in their lives. We don't know enough about this situation to comment about what happened at this point and we don't know if there were warning signs we just don't know. But my advice for everybody is to hold your kids a little tighter and be involved in their lives that's the best we can do by our kids.

ONE DEAD, ANOTHER INJURED FOLLOWING WRECK IN PEMISCOT COUNTY A Festus woman has died following a pile up wreck in Pemiscot County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the wreck occurred at around 12:30 pm Thursday on Interstate 55. A vehicle was stopped in traffic when it was hit from behind by another vehicle and pushed into a third vehicle.

Both the driver and the passenger of the 1st vehicle were flown Memphis hospitals. The passenger, 56 year old Sonya Cherry, has been pronounced dead. The driver, 31 year old Allison Venuto, of Pevely, suffered serious injuries.

TWO ARRESTED ON CHARGE OF DELIVERY OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE Two people have been taken into custody in Stoddard County on a controlled substance charge.

Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 67 year old David Moore and 41 year old Douglas Northington, both of Dexter, were recently arrested on a charge of delivery of a controlled substance.

Bond for each man was set at $12,500, cash only.

KENNETT WOMAN ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGEDLY BEING FOUND IN POSSESSION OF METHAMPHETAMINE A Kennett woman is facing charges after allegedly being found in possession of methamphetamine earlier this week.

According to the Kennett Police Department, On Wednesday, officers were dispatched to North Everett Street to check on several suspicious people in a condemned house.

When they arrived, the officers located a male and a female coming from behind the structure. While searching the female, officers found several syringes that contained a liquid that tested positive for methamphetamine.

41 year old Charity Pool was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and was held at the Dunklin County Jail.

POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT HONORED BY STATE OFFICIALS A Poplar Bluff High School senior was among 15 students to receive the Missouri Award for Outstanding Achievement in Citizenship last week in Jefferson City.

Hamiz Mirza received the honor, which is based on academic achievement, participation in extracurricular activities and service to the community.

Poplar Bluff R-I Superintendent Scott Dill and teacher Mitch Davis also presented Mirza with resolutions from the Missouri House of Representatives and Senate signed by Speaker Todd Richardson and Senator Doug Libla, respectively at a school board meeting last week.

FLOOD WARNINGS TO BE IN EFFECT FOR PORTIONS OF BLACK AND ST. FRANCIS RIVER

  The National Weather Service says multiple rivers in Southeast Missouri will be under flood warnings.

A flood warning is currently in effect for the Black River in the Annapolis and Pocahontas areas and will be in effect from this evening through tomorrow morning in the Poplar Bluff area.

In Poplar Bluff the Black River was at 13.09 feet at 3:15 am this morning and is expected to rise to near the flood stage of 16 feet early this evening.

At 16 feet, minor flooding may occur, mainly affecting bottomland and surrounding low lying areas. The NWS says that if the water continues to rise, Hillcrest Park will be affected.

Weather officials say that the St. Francis River will also be under a flood warning in the Patterson and St. Francis areas.

  HEAVY STORMS HIT SOUTHEAST MISSOURI ON WEDNESDAY

  Multiple heavy storms battered Southeast Missouri on Wednesday.

The heavy rains resulted in flash flooding in New Madrid County and the closure of Route H and Route N in Shannon County.

Power outages were also reported last night in the Poplar Bluff area and Ameren Missouri says that over 100 people were without power this morning in the Caruthersville area.

Officials in Carter County also reported dime size hail.

  MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK NEAR DEXTER

  A Sikeston man suffered serious injuries Wednesday evening following a single vehicle wreck in Stoddard County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, shortly after 6 pm a vehicle ran off of US 60 and struck a guardrail around two miles east of Dexter.

A passenger, 75 year old Therman Kimball, was seriously injured in the wreck and taken to a Sikeston hospital. No injuries were listed for the driver of the vehicle.

  ILLINOIS MAN ARRESTED IN BUTLER COUNTY ON FELONY FIREARM CHARGE

  An Illinois man was taken into custody Tuesday in Butler County on a felony firearm charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 28 year old Anthony Ferrell, of Peoria, Illinois, was arrested on a felony charge of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Ferrell is also facing charges of possession of a defaced firearm and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

  DRUG TAKE BACK EVENTS SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND

  The Poplar Bluff Police Department is one of several area law enforcement agencies who will be participating in this weekend’s Drug Take Back event.

KWOC News spoke with Lieutenant Darron Moore with the Poplar Bluff Police Department about the event.

“This Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Poplar Bluff Police Department and The Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public its 13th opportunity in seven years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their home of potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

Bring your pills for disposal to the Poplar Bluff Police Department at 1111 Poplar. We cannot accept needles and sharps, only pills and patches will be accepted. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Last October, Americans turned in 366 tons, over seven hundred and thirty pounds of prescription drugs, at almost 5,200 sites operated by the DEA and more than 4,000 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall in its 12 previous take back events the DEA and its partners have taken it over 7.1 million pounds, more than 3,500 tons of pills”

  BUTLER COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT TO HOST FREE IMMUNIZATION CLINIC NEXT MONTH FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

  The Butler County Health Department will be hosting a free immunization clinic next month for some High School Students.

The clinic has been scheduled for Thursday, May 18, at the High School for incoming seniors to take the Meningococcal vaccine and Friday, May 19, at Junior High for incoming eighth graders to receive the Tdap.

Students, unless exempt, are required by law to be properly immunized and provide verification before attending school. School officials say that packets are available in school nursing offices, and must be returned by tomorrow.

  PIPE REPLACEMENT SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

  Route CC in Butler County will be reduced today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform a pipe replacement.

According to MoDot officials, the work zone will be located between Route FF and County Road 661.

Work is scheduled to be performed today from 8 am to 4 pm.

  UTILTIY WORK TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

  Southbound Route 25 in Stoddard County will be reduced with a 10 foot width restriction today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews install a fiber optic line.

According to MoDot, the section of roadway affected is located at the intersection of Southbound Route 25 and Route 60. The ramp from Route 25 South to Westbound Route 60 will be closed during the installation.

Work is scheduled for 6 am to 4 pm today.

  MODOT CREWS TO BE IN STODDARD COUNTY FOR BRIDGE REPAIRS

  Route 60 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.

Officials say the road will be reduced today from 6 am to 4:30 pm and the work zone is located between Route 51 and Route TT.

MULTPLE ARRESTS MADE IN CONNECTION TO BURGLARY AT AREA BUSINESSAuthorities in Butler County say that multiple arrests have been made after items were recovered that had been reported stolen from an area business.

Investigator Randal Huddleston with the Butler County Sheriff’s Department tells KWOC News more about the arrests.

Randal Huddleston:

In early April 2017 Butler County deputies were dispatched to Triggers Gun Shop in reference to stolen property. Upon arrival they were advised that a 55-gallon external fuel tank along with other items used in constructing new buildings were missing. Employees with triggers gun shop advised they had video surveillance that showed a white GMC Z71 with a toolbox in the back and what appeared to be a spare tire with a steel rim on the back passenger side as a suspect vehicle. Last Friday April 21st Butler County deputies were again dispatched to 1722 Cravens Road which is Knuckle Brothers Construction in reference to theft from their property. Upon arriving deputies were advised they were missing chains, cordless drills, saws, impact drills, batteries, and chargers and they believe that a former employee of theirs by the name of Gordon Stroud may have been the one that had been stealing from them. This past Saturday on April 22nd, Butler County Deputies were dispatched to the parking lot of Big Lots in Poplar Bluff to meet with Jim Acres who is an employee at triggers gun shop. He believed he had observed a white GMC Z71 matching the description of the vehicle from triggers surveillance video sitting in the parking lot and a white male occupant in the driver's seat. Upon the deputies arrival they observed the vehicle with a license plate and making contact with the driver, they identified him as Michael Arnold. He advised that he had borrowed the vehicle from Gordon Stroud. Michael Arnold voluntarily offered to take deputies to his property and gave them consent to walk around the property to check for stolen items. A search warrant was applied for and was granted for the search and seizure of stolen items at Michael Arnold’s property. While at the residence of Michael Arnold, Gordon Stroud was located inside the residence along with other items of stolen property which was found to belong to Knuckles Brothers Construction as well as a gentleman by the name of Donald Stanley who was also located inside the residence who had an outstanding no bond warrant through probation and parole. All three subjects are from Poplar Bluff and all three were arrested. Charges being sought on Michael Arnold and Gordon Stroud are possession of stolen property and Donald Stanley was incarcerated for the outstanding probation and parole warrant as well as possession of controlled substance.

INCOMING FRONT BRINGS WITH IT THE POSSIBILITY OF SEVERE WEATHER A front crossing over Southeast Missouri today and tonight is bringing with it the possibility of some severe weather.

KWOC News spoke with Rick Shanklin, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky, who said that all modes of severe weather are possible, including tornados.

Rick Shanklin:

Severe weather chances will be increasing across Southeast Missouri Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday evening. All modes of severe weather are possible, large hail, damaging thunderstorm winds, and even a couple of tornados are not out of the question. We do have a severe weather risk across all of Southeast Missouri. The greatest risk, a level 3 of 5, or enhanced risk, is around the Poplar Bluff and Greenville area, and points westward. That’s mainly for the afternoon hours Wednesday. We do think the storms will evolve into a line orientation as they move east across Southeast Missouri Wednesday evening and then eventually ending as we move into the late evening hours Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service, multiple rounds of thunderstorms are also expected to begin on Friday and continue throughout the weekend. Portions of Southeast Missouri could see three to five inches of rainfall or higher.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS SPRING GAMES SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF The Special Olympics Spring Games have been scheduled for today in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Poplar Bluff School District, the event is scheduled to begin at 9 am this morning at Fred M. Morrow Stadium.

The event is open to the public.

MAN ALLEGEDLY BITES OFF WOMAN’S FINGER DURING ALTERCATION A Poplar Bluff man is facing assault charges after he alleged bit off a woman’s finger during an altercation.

KWOC News spoke with Detective Joey Woodruff with the Poplar Bluff Police Department about the incident.

Joey Woodruff:

On Monday morning around 7 am, Officer Sean Pringer was dispatched to an address on North 11th Street regarding an assault. As Officer Pringer arrived on scene he contacted the female victim. The victim said that Justin C. Williams, 27, of Poplar Bluff, bit her finger off while she was trying to break up a fight between her son and Williams. The victim also told Officer Pringer that she struck Williams in the top of the head with a brick after Williams bit her finger. At approximately 7:45 a.m. Officer Pringer made contact with the suspect, Justin Williams, at an address in the 500 block of Cynthia Street. During a conversation between Officer Pringer and Williams he was asked about the victim's finger and how it was bitten off. Williams said he thought he was biting the victim's son. Williams was placed under arrest on the charge of second-degree assault and later lodged in the Butler County Justice Center after declining medical treatment for a laceration to his head. The victim was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital for treatment.

FCA BANQUET SCHEDULD FOR THURSDAY NIGHT The Annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes Banquet will be held this week in Poplar Bluff.

Bill Ray with the FCA says the banquet will begin at around 5:45 pm tomorrow night.

I came in and started coaching football with Coach Telly and helping him with FCA, Coach Sievers came in and he started helping with FCA and he is still doing that today. I'm going to talk about this history of FCA specifically and in general in Southeast Missouri. We're going to be talking about that, the history from 71 up till now. It's going to be a good night. NEW PEPSI MID AMERICA DISTRIBUTION FACILITY OPENS IN THE POPLAR BLUFF AREA Today’s Talk KWOC was live at the Grand Opening of a new Pepsi Mid America Distribution Facility yesterday in Poplar Bluff.

During the event we spoke with Pepsi Mid America President Kieth Dickens about what the facility will do in the community.

Keith Dickens:

We had a grand opening for Poplar Bluff facility and we had a very good turnout, support of the community, which has supported us all through our construction project. We employ about 75 people in the area and we're real proud of the efficiency of this system because we carry no inventory on site. It's a rolling inventory and a just-in-time delivery system. That was the purpose of the event today and we’re just so proud to be a part of this community. You’ve got a nice office facility but we do have a large, about a 15-acre facility. We have three outparcels of buildings; the office building itself, a vending building where we do the equipment repair, and then a food and snack building that we have housing for our full line vending business. We service now micro-markets which is a self-checkout type convenience store concept inside a industrial type business. Then we also have vending that we do in that you see in the normal setting for a business environment where we have Beverages and snacks as well as cold food and fresh food. Well we got great market share in this area and we’re blessed for that support we get, but it’s been a lot of years of building the brands and we have some of the biggest name brands in the beverage industry, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Starbucks, Lipton Tea, Dr. Pepper, 7Up, Crush.

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO THE ARREST OF FOUR IN POPLAR BLUFFA traffic stop turned into a drug bust Sunday evening in Poplar Bluff.

Detective Andy Cleaveland with the Poplar Bluff Police Department says that a total of four people were arrested during the stop.

ANDY CLEAVELAND:

On Sunday evening at approximately 11 p.m. officers of the Poplar Bluff Police Department conducted a traffic stop at Price and Spring Streets. At that time the driver, who was identified as Kyle M. Taylor, 24 years old, was arrested for having a suspended driver's license and also for having no proof of insurance. After he was arrested Mr. Taylor was searched and marijuana in a corner baggie with a crystal like substance was located on his person. There was identification of the passengers that were also in the vehicle and pat-downs were conducted. Those subjects were also identified as Heather Nicole Payne 32 years old, Stacia Eichele 25 years old, and Jacob Jones 24 years old, all of Poplar Bluff. During the pat-downs of all three of the passengers, additional items of drug paraphernalia and drugs as well as marijuana were located on their persons. A search of the vehicle was also conducted, in which a backpack containing two syringes, one fully loaded with a clear liquid, a spoon with a clear liquid, and cotton was located. A marijuana grinder and .380 caliber ammunition for a pistol was located in a plastic bag. Also located inside the vehicle was a Hi-Point .380 caliber handgun. During the booking all the subjects had additional items of paraphernalia and drugs located on them. The driver Kyle M. Taylor was placed into the Butler County Jail for distribution of an amphetamine, unlawful use of a weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana. All three passengers, Heather Payne, Stacia Eichele, and Jacob Jones, were all charged with the same offense of possession of amphetamines and possession of drug paraphernalia and lodged in the Butler County Jail.

TWO POPLAR BLUFF RESIDENTS ARRESTED ON ROBBERY WARRANT Two Poplar Bluff residents have been taken into custody on a robbery warrant.

According to the Kennett Police Department, 35 year old Jennifer Stracener and 33 year old Rodriquez Williams were arrested Monday afternoon on a Dunklin County warrant for 1st degree robbery.

Both were being held at the Dunklin County Jail with a bond set at $100,000.

TWO POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOLS CHOSEN FOR NATIONAL HONOR Two Poplar Bluff schools have received a national honor.

O'Neal Elementary and Poplar Bluff Junior High are among 53 school campuses out of over 10,000 to be named national showcase schools by the Flippen Group for top notch implementation of the Capturing Kids' Hearts program.

The program is a cultural initiative that centers on building positive relationships with students and was first piloted at the Junior High during the 2013/14 school year. It then expanded to O'Neal the following year and ultimately becoming a district-wide practice.

As a reward for the achievement, the Junior High and O'Neal have received three scholarships apiece for staff members to attend newly developed advanced training by the company this summer in Texas.

MAN ALLEGEDLY GRABS GUN AND THREATNES TO KILL HIS EX GIRLFRIEND A Poplar Bluff man is in custody on multiple charges in connection to an altercation at an area residence.

KWOC News spoke to Chief Deputy Wess Popp with the Butler County Sheriff’s Department about the incident.

WESS POPP:

On Sunday morning at approximately 1:30 a.m. Deputies got a call to respond to the 1000 block of White Oak in Butler County in reference to a domestic in progress that involved a firearm. Officers arrived, made contact with the female, Ashley Hopper, who stated she was inside the residence with her boyfriend Nathan when her ex-boyfriend, identified as 36 year old Richard Moore, from Poplar Bluff. While they were watching television Moore entered into the residence seeing Nathan on the couch became jealous and became argumentative. At which point he ran into Ashley’s bedroom where he knew a .38 revolver was placed. He grabbed the .38, Ashley ran in after him and threatened to kill her. He then came out of the bedroom and threatened Nathan with a handgun which ultimately talked him into fighting hand-to-hand and Nathan was able to get him outside the residence to fight, leaving the weapon inside. Prior to officers arriving, Richard had fled the scene in a red 4-door truck. Officers went ahead and stayed in the area believing that he may come back, which he did. Once Moore seen officers standing by a short pursuit began where deputies ended up calling ahead to the city of Poplar Bluff with the description and shortly thereafter Poplar Bluff was able to pull Moore over and take him into custody without incident. Currently Mr. Moore is being incarcerated in the Butler County Justice Center for the crime of assault 2nd degree with a firearm, armed criminal action, and also endangering the welfare of a child first degree because her small child was present while he was making his threats within the residence.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FACING COCAINE CHARGE OUT OF HOWELL COUNTY A Poplar Bluff man is facing multiple felony drug charges following his arrest in Howell County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 55 year old Harlan Gipson was arrested Monday afternoon on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance for cocaine and possession of marijuana.

Following the arrest, Gipson was held at the Howell County Jail.

NARCOTICS AND COUNTERFEIT MONEY FOUND DURING TRAFFIC STOP IN KENNETT Two people are facing charges following a traffic stop last week.

Officials with the Kennett Police Department tell KWOC News that officers conducted a traffic stop Thursday night on a vehicle that failed to stop at a stop sign.

After getting consent to search the vehicle, officers located several containers with narcotics inside them as well as several counterfeit $100 bills, drug paraphernalia, and other controlled substances.

The occupants of the vehicle, 38 year old April McCormick and 26 year old Samantha Jenkins, both of Kennett, were arrested and transported to the Dunklin County Justice Center pending formal charges by the State Prosecutors Office.

ILLINOIS MAN IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO NON LETHAL SHOOTING IN POPLAR BLUFFAn Illinois man has surrendered to authorities in Poplar Bluff following a shooting on Friday.

Josh Stewart with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that officers responded to Garfield Street Friday in reference to a shooting where they learned that a 29 year old Poplar Bluff resident had been taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

35 year old Tajsh Lee, of East St. Louis, Illinois, has been identified as a potential suspect and he turned himself in to authorities on Sunday.

His bond has been set at $250,000, cash only.

KENNETT MAN ARRESTED FOR POSSESSION WITH INTENT TO DISTRIBUTE Authorities in Kennett say an area man has been taken into custody for possession with intent to distribute.

According to the Kennett Police Department, on Saturday officers arrested 27 year old Darius Hudson, of Kennett, for possession of synthetic cannabinoid and possession with the intent to distribute.

Following the arrest, Hudson was held at the Dunklin County Justice Center pending formal charges by the State Prosecutors Office.

BLOOMFILED WOMAN ARRESTED ON DOMESTIC ASSAULT AND CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE CHARGES Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested a Bloomfield woman on domestic assault and controlled substance charges.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 44 year old Elizabeth Hammett was recently taken into custody on charges of 4th degree domestic assault and possession of a controlled substance except for 35 grams or less of marijuana or a synthetic cannabinoid. Her bond was set at $22,500, cash only.

45 year old Charles Hammett, also of Bloomfield, was arrested on a charge of possession of a controlled substance except for 35 grams or less of marijuana or a synthetic cannabinoid. His bond was set at $12,500 cash only.

DEXTER MAN DIES FOLLOWING WRECK INVOLVING STODDARD COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE VEHICLE A Dexter man has died from injuries he received Saturday in a wreck in Stoddard County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a Stoddard County Sheriff’s Office vehicle was travelling northbound on Missouri Highway 25 with its emergency lights and sirens activated when it struck a motorized bicycle that was crossing the roadway.

The driver of the bicycle, 22 year old David Griggs, was taken to a Dexter hospital where he was pronounced dead. No injuries were listed for the driver of the Sheriff’s Office vehicle.

MARSTON WOMAN FACING FELONY DRUG CHARGE OUT OF NEW MADRID COUNTY A Marston woman was arrested over the weekend in New Madrid County on a felony drug charge.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 32 year old Crystal McFerren was arrested Saturday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

McFerren is also facing a charge of possession of less than 10 grams of marijuana.

Following the arrest, she was transported to the Pemiscot County Jail on a 24 hour hold.

PEMISCOT COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED THIS WEEK FOR PIPE REPLACEMENTS Route P in Pemiscot County will be closed this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace several pipes under the roadway.

According to MoDOT, the work zone will be located between Route A and Route K in Pemiscot County.

Weather permitting, work is scheduled to take place today through Thursday from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm daily.

STORMS DAMAGE MULTIPLE HOMES IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURIMultiple reports of damage have come in following yesterday’s storms in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Ripley County Emergency Manager, there was moderate damage to three homes that had trees fall through their roofs. One home also had minor damage when a power line weather head was pulled from the structure by a downed tree. Multiple vehicles were also damaged.

The Doniphan Police Department reported that downed trees blocked the roadways on Route Y and Route K for a period of time last night and have since been cleared off.

In southern Butler County, a semi-tractor trailer overturned on Highway 67 about a mile north of the Missouri and Arkansas State Line. The driver was removed from the vehicle and appeared to be okay.

HANDGUNS AND METHAMPHETAMINE FOUND DURING TRAFFIC STOP IN POPLAR BLUFF Two Poplar Bluff residents are facing charges after methamphetamine and firearms were found during a traffic stop Thursday.

KWOC News spoke with Lieutenant Darron Moore with the Poplar Bluff Police Department about the stop.

DARRON MOORE:

Early Thursday morning around 12:40 a.m., Patrolman Dustin Barks conducted a traffic stop on a black Pontiac in the 500 block of Highway 53. Contact was made with the male driver, 21 year old Jordan Braden and the female passenger 25 year old Kira Earls, both of Poplar Bluff.

During the traffic stop it was determined that the vehicle was improperly registered, there was no insurance on the vehicle and the passenger had an active warrant for her arrest. During a search of the vehicle, Officers located 1 handgun under the driver’s seat and 2 handguns under the passenger’s seat along with items of drug paraphernalia.

K9 officer Billy Duckett was assisting with the traffic stop and observed several small plastic baggies fall from Mr. Braden’s shorts. These baggies contained a crystalized substance that later field tested positive for methamphetamine. After locating these items, Mr. Braden volunteered two other bags of suspected methamphetamine from his underwear. The total weight of the suspected methamphetamine was approximately 50.8 grams.

Braden and Earls were arrested and later lodged in the Butler County Justice Center with charges of Possession with the Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

Further arrests are anticipated and contact has been made with ATF and DEA for consideration into federal charges.

INDIVIDUALS CHARGED AFTER GRAFFITI REFRENCES POSSIBLE SHOOTING AT NORHTEAST ARKANSAS SCHOOL Authorities in Clay County say that individuals have been charged in connection to graffiti that was found last week.

According to Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller, on Saturday, the sheriff's department was contacted about graffiti found at Chalk Bluff that referenced a possible shooting to take place at a school in Piggott.

Miller says that the individuals responsible for the graffiti were identified and are being charged with falsely making a terroristic threat. The case will be referred to the Clay County Juvenile Department. The names of the individuals charged have not been released.

Miller tells KWOC News that no overt actions were taken to carry out this threat and that the Clay County Sheriff's Department's, Piggott Police Department's, and the Piggott School District's first priority is the safety of the students and staff.

MAN ARRESTED IN CLAY COUNTY ON CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES A man has been taken into custody in Northeast Arkansas on child pornography related charges.

Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller tells KWOC News that on Monday, officers with the Clay County Sheriff's Department, with assistance from the Piggott Police Department and the Jonesboro Police Department's ICAC Unit, executed a search warrant on the residence of Jerry Greene in Piggott.

During the search, officers located three images identified as child pornography.

Greene was arrested and has been charged with three counts of possessing child pornography. Sheriff Miller says that further charges could be forthcoming depending on results from the computer lab.

KENNETT MAN ARRESTED ON FIREARM CHARGES Authorities in Dunklin County have arrested a Kennett man on gun charges.

According to the Kennett Police Department, 27 year old James Williams was taken into custody Wednesday for felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of under 35 grams of marijuana.

Williams is being held at the Dunklin County Justice Center pending formal charges from the State Prosecutors Office.

COFFEE WITH A COP EVENT SCHEDULED FOR NEXT MONTH IN POPLAR BLUFF A Coffee with a Cop event has been scheduled for next month in Poplar Bluff.

Area residents will be able to join local Police Officers for coffee and conversation from 8 am to 10 am on Saturday, May 20th.

The event will be held at Myrtle's Place Back Alley BBQ in downtown Poplar Bluff.

INFANT FLOWN TO MEMPHIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING WRECK IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

  Two people were injured Wednesday afternoon, including a young child, following a wreck in New Madrid County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the wreck occurred on New Madrid County Road 246 when a vehicle, driven by 50 year old Peggy Callaway, of Bernie, ran off the side of the roadway, struck a ditch, and overturned.

Two passengers in the vehicle, a 24 year old woman and an infant child, were ejected during the wreck. The infant was seriously injured and flown to a children’s hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. The woman received moderate injuries and was taken to a Kennett hospital.

No injuries were listed for the driver.

  ISOLATED SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING

  Officials with the National Weather Service say that we could be seeing severe thunderstorms today.

According to a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by the NWS, isolated severe thunderstorms will be possible this afternoon and evening. Locally damaging wind, and marginally severe hail, 1 inch in diameter, will also be possible in addition to locally heavy rain.

There are also chances of thunderstorms for Friday and Saturday, with locally heavy rainfall of up to 3 inches is possible. Weather officials say that this may result in minor, short duration flooding, mainly in low, poor drainage areas across southeast Missouri.

  BLYTHEVILLE MAN CONVICTED ON FIRST DEGREE MURDER CHARGE

  A Northeast Arkansas man has been found guilty on a murder charge.

Anfernee Wells, of Blytheville, was found guilty by a jury Wednesday on a charge of 1st degree murder. The charge stems from the 2015 shooting death of Vincent Stone in Blytheville.

Wells received a sentence of 40 years in prison.

  TWO FACING DELIVERY OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE CHARGES OUT OF STODDARD COUNTY

  Two people are facing a controlled substance charge following their arrest in Stoddard County.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 35 year old Stephanie Walter, of Colorado Springs, and 29 year old Tylor Young, of Advance, were each recently arrested on a charge of delivery of a controlled substance.

Officials say that both remained in jail as of this morning on $15,000 cash only bonds.

  POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN ARRESTED ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WARRANT

  A Poplar Bluff woman has been taken into custody on a local warrant.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 28 year old Amanda Cates, was arrested Wednesday afternoon on a Butler County warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

  CAMPBELL FIRE DEPARTMENT TO HOST PANCAKE BREAKFAST THIS MORNING

  If you are in the Campbell area and also in the mood for pancakes this morning, you should stop by the Campbell Community Center.

The Campbell Fire Department will be hosting an all you care to eat pancake breakfast this morning from 7 am to 10:30 am. The food will include pancakes, chocolate chip pancakes, sausage, and milk or juice. The cost is $6, with children five and under eating for free.

Families of up to four members can get in for $20. All proceeds from the event will go to the Campbell Fire Department for the purchase of gear and equipment.

  DATE SET FOR YOUTH LIVESTOCK SHOW AT THE BUTLER COUNTY FAIR

  Preparations are being made for the Youth Livestock Show at the 2017 Butler County Fair.

According to the Butler County Fair Facebook page, the show will be held on Thursday, September 28th and is open to youth in Butler, Stoddard, Dunklin, Wayne, Carter, Ripley and Clay Counties.

To show lambs, goats, chickens or rabbits in the fair, youth will need to join 4-H or FFA. The deadline to register for the goat and lamb market class is May 15th. The deadline to register for chickens and rabbits is July 1st.

MULTIPLE METH LABS FOUND DURING TRAFFIC STOP IN BUTLER COUNTY  

A Butler County Sherriff’s Deputy found multiple meth labs Tuesday during a stop.

KWOC News spoke with Deputy Brandon Lowe about the traffic stop.

BRANDON LOWE: 

On Tuesday morning, at around 7:20 am, I stopped a vehicle for no brake light on the driver side on Highway 67 South northbound lane just north of Cane Creek Flats. I made contact with the driver, Michael Hunter age 47, tried to obtain his ID, he advised me that he did not have a driver's license. I tried to get the passengers ID, identified as Jason Miller also age 47. I had dispatch run a check on both subjects. I was advised that Hunter’s driving privilege was revoked and that Miller's had expired. I took Hunter into custody, escorted him back to my patrol unit. I then went up and asked Miller to exit the vehicle. As Miller was exiting the vehicle, a meth pipe fell off of his lap, he attempted to stomp on it and tried to kick it off into the median at which time I placed him in custody and requested additional units. I asked for consent to search the vehicle, the vehicle was registered to Miller however Hunter was the driver. Both subjects gave consent to search. Inside the vehicle was a Black Backpack between the driver seat and the passenger seat that was partially unzipped, and I could see inside the backpack there were two meth labs, commonly called Shake and Bakes or one pots. I removed the backpack from the van and as I set it on the ground I observed several other items inside the backpack related to narcotics. I could see a syringe. I could see coffee filters, ziplock baggies. There was a black case that was enclosed that I removed from the backpack and once I opened it up there was coffee filters that had residue, there was a black vial. Inside the black vial I found a small baggie of crystal methamphetamine and a small baggie of powdered methamphetamine. Hunter and Miller were both transported to the Sheriff's Department where they were booked and lodged. They are both being charged with distribution/manufacturing of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, possession of methamphetamine precursors with intent to distribute, and Hunter, the driver, is also being charged with driving while revoked and the equipment violation for the brake light.

ED DEGARIS ELECTED AS MAYOR OF POPLAR BLUFF

Ed DeGaris will maintain his position as Mayor of Poplar Bluff.

DeGaris was elected by a unanimous vote of the Council at a meeting Monday night.

Councilwoman Susan McVey was also unanimously elected as Mayor Pro Tem during the meeting.

Before the election, Ron Black, Steve Davis, and Robert L. Smith were all sworn in to their seats on the council.

PIPE REPLACEMENT TO CAUSE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF BUTLER COUNTY ROAD

Route CC in Butler County will be temporarily closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform a pipe replacement.

The section of roadway to be closed is located between Route FF and County Road 677.

Work is scheduled to be performed from 8 am to 4:30 pm.

THREE ARRESTED IN WAYNE COUNTY ON METH RELATED CHARGES

Three people were taken into custody late Tuesday night in Wayne County on meth related charges.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the arrests all occurred at around 10 pm Tuesday.

37 year old Leslie Long, of Clubb, was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute - methamphetamine.

Officers also arrested 33 year old Jessica Morrill, of Fisk, and 29 year old Brandon Tumbas, of Poplar Bluff, on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

MAN ARRESTED IN KENNETT ON DRUG AND LARCENY WARRANTS

A man was taken into custody Tuesday in Kennett on multiple warrants.

According to the Kennett Police Department, officers arrested 29 year old Cody Conder Tuesday morning on warrants for dangerous drugs and larceny.

Officials say the bond for the dangerous drugs warrant is $25,000, while the bond for the larceny warrant is $5,000.

Following the arrest, Conder was held at the Dunklin County Justice Center.

NEW MADRID POLICE SAY THEY HAVE RECEIVED SEVERAL REPORTS OF A CHECK SCAM

The New Madrid Police Department says that have received several reports about a scam where a fraudulent check is received in the mail.

According to the Police Department, the letter with the check says that it is for the recipient's work as a "store evaluator". A large check is enclosed and the recipient is encouraged to cash the check, and then use some of the money to buy prepaid Visa cards.

The letter then asks the recipient to fill out the attached survey with the card numbers for the cards they have purchased and mail the survey back in.

The person who cashes the check will ultimately owe money to the bank as well as lose out on the money for the prepaid cards.

Anyone who receives one of these letters is advised to not cash the check. Police officials say this is believed to be an overseas scam and is currently under investigation by several agencies.

VEHICLE OVERTURNS IN BUTLER COUNTY, SERIOUSLY INJURING ONE

A vehicle overturned Monday afternoon in Butler County resulting in serious injuries to an area man.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 40 year old Shawn Tubbs, of Harviell, was driving on Highway 142 when his vehicle lost control, ran off the roadway, hit a tree, and overturned. The wreck occurred at the Poplar Bluff city limits.

Tubbs suffered serious injuries and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

  GRASSY MAN FACING CHARGES OF STATUTORY SODOMY AND CHILD MOLESTATION An area man has been taken into custody on multiple felony charges.

According to Missouri Case Net, a warrant was served Monday on 72 year old Johnathan Barks Senior, of Grassy.

He was arrested by the Bollinger County Sheriff’s Department and has been charged with 2nd degree statutory sodomy and 4th degree child molestation. His bond was set at $50,000, cash only.

Barks arraignment has been scheduled for Wednesday morning.

  TWO SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WRECK NEAR DEXTER Two Campbell residents were seriously injured Monday afternoon after an SUV crashed near Dexter.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol the wreck occurred when the driver, 49 year old Roxie Calder, of Campbell, lost control of the vehicle on Missouri Highway 25 and struck a utility pole.

Two passengers in the vehicle, 30 year old Rebecca Calder and 27 year old Marcia Coshatt, suffered serious injuries and were taken to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

  POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON METH CHARGE A Poplar Bluff man was taken into custody Monday evening on a felony methamphetamine charge.

According to the Highway Patrol, 29 year old Thomas Crumley was arrested Monday evening on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Crumley is also facing a charge of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and has a warrant out of Wilson County, Kansas.

Crumley was transported to the Butler County Jail following the arrest.

  DEADLINE TO REGISTER FOR YOUTH BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL IN POPLAR BLUFF EXTENDED TO THIS FRIDAY The deadline to get your children signed up for baseball or softball in Poplar Bluff has been extended to this Friday.

According to Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, the deadline is for youths who will be age eight through 15 on August 1st.

  YOUTH ALCOHOL ENFORCEMENT CRACKDOWN ANNOUNCED FOR NEXT MONTH The Dexter Police Department has announced their participation in a nationwide youth alcohol enforcement crackdown.

The crackdown will include high visibility enforcement throughout Dexter from May 4th to May 15th.

According to Police officials, officers will be aggressively looking for substance–impaired drivers during the crackdown and will arrest anyone caught driving impaired.

ONE KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECKA Patterson man has died following a single vehicle wreck Friday in Wayne County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 29 year old Ricky Harper ran off the side of Route E and overturned at around 6 am Friday morning. The wreck was located about six miles east of Greenville.

Harper was pronounced dead at the scene by Wayne County Coroner Gary Umfleet.

ARKANSAS MAN ARRESTED IN BUTLER COUNTY ON RESISTING ARREST CHARGE Authorities in Butler County have arrested an Arkansas man on a charge of resisting arrest.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 62 year old Jimmy Winkle, of Evening Shade, was taken into custody Friday evening on charges of resisting arrest by fleeing, driving while revoked, and failure to maintain right half of the roadway.

After the arrest, Winkle was transported to the Butler County Jail.

ROADWORK SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK ON US 160 IN RIPLEY AND OREGON COUNTIES US 160 in Oregon and Ripley Counties will be reduced to one lane this week so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can partially overlay the roadway.

According to MoDOT, the work zone will be located from Route 19 in Oregon County to Route J in Ripley County.

Weather permitting, work is scheduled for 7 am to 4:30 pm daily through this Thursday.

INVESTIGATION LEADS TO ARREST OF TWO PEOPLE ON MURDER CHARGES IN MALDEN An ongoing investigation into a homicide last September has led to the arrest of two people.

Malden Police Chief Jarrett Bullock tells KWOC News that both Larry Thornton, of Portageville, and Brianna Bonaparte, of Sikeston, were arrested last week in connection to the murder of Walter Lee on September 8th.

Arrest warrants for both Thornton and Bonaparte have been issued for the charges of murder 1st degree, robbery 1st degree, and two counts of armed criminal action.

Both are being held in the Dunklin County Jail with the possibility of no bond.

Bullock says that the investigation is still ongoing and more charges may be filed. If anyone has information in connection to the case they are asked to contact their local law enforcement agency.

BROSELEY WOMAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE FELONIES A Broseley woman is facing multiple felony charges in connection to her arrest over the weekend.

According to authorities, 48 year old Loretta Barnett was taken into custody Saturday afternoon in Butler County on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance and driving while intoxicated – drugs.

Following the arrest, Barnett was held at the Butler County Jail.

POPLAR BLUFF CITY COUNCIL MEETING SCHEDULED FOR TONIGHT The Poplar Bluff City Council will be holding a regular meeting tonight in the City Council Chambers beginning at 7 pm.

Prior to the meeting, a special meeting will begin at 6:45 pm where the Poplar Bluff City Clerk will swear in the newly elected City Councilmembers and then the new City Council will elect a Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem.

During the regular meeting, the city council will discuss a possible ballot proposition for a local use tax as well as a request from the Planning and Zoning Commission to deny a request to rezone property that is located south of Eugene Boulevard.

TREE TRIMMING TO CAUSE DELAYS FOR NEARLY TWO WEEKS IN STODDARD COUNTY Westbound Route 60 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane over almost two weeks as Missouri Department of Transportation crews trim trees along the roadway.

The section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route F to County Road 449.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday, April 27th from 7 am to 4:30 pm daily.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON GREENE COUNTY WARRANTA Poplar Bluff man has been taken into custody on a warrant.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 43 year old Randel Sparks was arrested Thursday afternoon in Butler County on a Greene County warrant for failure to appear for felony hit and run.

He is also facing charges of driving while suspended and failure to display valid plates.

Sparks is currently being held at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office on no bond.

The warrant is in connection to the hit and run death of a Poplar Bluff teenager in December of 2015.

ELLINGTON MAN FACING MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES An Ellington man is facing multiple felony charges following his arrest Thursday night.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 29 year old Carl Lodge was arrested shortly after 9 pm in Reynolds County on felony charges of driving while intoxicated – chronic offender and endangering the welfare of a child.

Following the arrest, Lodge was transported to the Reynolds County Jail.

MODOT ENCOURAGES MISSOURIANS TO HELP CLEAN UP LITTER The Missouri Department of Transportation is asking Missourians from every corner of the state to do spring cleaning outdoors and help fight litter through the state’s annual “No MOre Trash! Bash.”

The program runs from April 15th to May 15th and encourages people to clean up litter across Missouri from roadsides, parks, neighborhoods, rivers, streams, trails and other places. Trash Bash activities also include educational efforts in schools, community events and Earth Day celebrations.

According to MoDOT, last year, more than 50,400 bags of litter and several truckloads of debris were picked up during the one month No MOre Trash! Bash.

POLICE OFFICERS SAVE TWO DOGS FROM A FIRE IN KENNETT Two dogs were saved from a fire earlier this week in Kennett.

Officials with the Kennett Police Department tell KWOC News that shortly before midnight Wednesday night; a patrolling officer discovered a structure fire on Vinson Street. Officers on scene found that no one was home but heard several dogs barking inside the residence.

The officers were able to break out a window prior to Firefighters' arrival and make entry into the residence to save the two dogs. Neither of the dogs were injured, and they were later turned over to their owners.

TWO SERIOUSLY INJURED IN STODDARD COUNTY WRECK Two people have been flown to regional hospitals in connection to a wreck in Stoddard County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that a vehicle, driven by 38 year old James Charles, of Dexter, reportedly crossed the center line of Missouri Highway 25 Thursday afternoon and struck a vehicle head on.

Charles suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a St. Louis hospital. The driver of the second vehicle also received serious injuries and was air lifted to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

KENNETT CHILDREN ENCOURAGED TO SPEND TIME WITH AREA POLICE OFFICERS The Kennett Police Department is encouraging area children to spend a Saturday next month with some local police officers.

The 1st Annual Kennett Kids N’ Cops event will be held from 8:30 am to noon on Saturday, May 13th at Combs Lake.

Kids will be able to take part in multiple activities with local officers, including fishing, archery, and boat rides. They will also get a free hotdog, chips, and drinks.

DRIVERS ASKED TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR STRIPING CREWS Motorists are advised to be cautious of striping vehicles that are running throughout Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, striping is currently underway, with the focus on minor routes. In late May, crews will shift their attention to striping major routes, including Interstate 55, Route 60 and Route 67, as well as state routes in cities and towns.

Drivers should be prepared to slow down significantly when coming up behind a slow-moving caravan of MoDOT striping trucks. The striping trucks move between 8 mph and 12 mph when work is underway.

SIX ARRESTED ON HEROIN CHARGES IN POPLAR BLUFFPoplar Bluff authorities have arrested six people on heroin charges.

Narcotics Investigator Cory Mitchell with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that the arrests occurred Tuesday morning.

CORY MITCHELL:

On Tuesday morning during the early hours, approximately 6 am, members of the Poplar Bluff Police Department, Butler County Sheriff’s Department, Southeast Missouri drug task force, DEA, ATF, the US Marshal Service, executed several search warrants within Poplar Bluff and Butler County, Missouri at two local motels and a residence in Poplar Bluff where a substantial quantity, approximately a half ounce of heroin in total, was recovered and seized and the arrest of six individuals. The six individuals that were arrested during this investigation was Cody Marks, Dominique Jones, Bradley Jordan, Cameron Cook, Demetrius Taylor, and Jessica Doyle. Five of the six we're going to be requesting charges of possession with intent to distribute heroin, and that's on all the male subjects and on the female is going to be possession of heroin and methamphetamine drug paraphernalia for Doyle.

Narcotics Investigator Jason Morgan with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells us that additional heroin distributors have been identified as a part of the investigation.

JASON MORGAN:

It's just part of us doing our job through this investigation we were able to identify some lower to mid level distributors and this investigations also identified some upper-level distributors. Tuesday Morning we arrested six lower to mid level dealers and through this investigation we've also identified some upper-level distributors of heroin in our community. We’re targeting them as well. Not only through the proactive efforts of the Poplar Bluff Police Department and the drug task force is involved, what makes these cases for us is the efforts of the public providing information, family members providing information about their loved ones being addicted to heroin. The family members knowing where the loved ones are getting the drugs and reporting that to us, those are all beneficial key components of helping us further these investigations and as long as we have the public support we’ll continue to make arrests.

DEXTER WOMAN FACING METH CHARGE FOLLOWING ARREST IN BUTLER COUNTY Authorities in Butler County have arrested a Dexter woman on a felony meth charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 32 year old Robin Currie was arrested Wednesday evening on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Currie also reportedly had a misdemeanor warrant from the Dexter Police Department for shoplifting.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE DEPARTMENT TO HOST DRUG TAKE BACK EVENT Area residents will have a chance to safely dispose of their unused or expired medication later this month.

The Poplar Bluff Police Department will be taking part in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 29th from 10 am to 2 pm.

Participants must simply drive up to the police department and an officer will collect their medications. The Police Department has asked that no hypodermic needles or aerosol inhalers be brought.

MAN FACING ASSAULT CHARGE IN CONNECTION TO SHOOTING IN POPLAR BLUFF One man was injured Tuesday evening in connection to a shooting in Poplar Bluff.

KWOC News spoke with Lieutenant Josh Stewart with the Poplar Bluff Police Department who told us that the shooting reportedly stemmed from an altercation at an area business.

JOSH STEWART:

On Tuesday evening at approximately 9:35 p.m. officers of the Poplar Bluff Police Department were dispatched to the 1100 block of North 11th Street in reference to shots fired. Once in the area they contacted the two victims, a thirty-one-year-old resident of Poplar Bluff, who was suffering injuries from glass in his eye and a twenty-one-year-old Poplar Bluff resident suffering no injuries. In speaking with the two it was learned that the shooting stemmed from an earlier altercation at Hucks. The victims advised that they suspected twenty-one-year-old Sikeston resident Dearius Vance to be responsible for the shooting. Mr. Vance's vehicle information was disseminated to area law enforcement. At approximately 4 o'clock a.m. officers with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety contacted Mr. Vance during a traffic stop. Mr. Vance was taken into custody and transported back to Poplar Bluff. Additionally during the contact in Sikeston, a Smith & Wesson 9 millimeter handgun was located. Vance was processed and is currently lodged in the Butler County Justice Center on charges of assault first, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. The 31-year old Poplar Bluff resident suffering injuries was treated and released at a area hospital.

POPLAR BLUFF ATHLETIC DIRECTOR WARNS OF FRAUD ATTEMPTS A Poplar Bluff School Official says that city residents are again being targeted for fraud.

Poplar Bluff R-1 Athletic Director Kent Keith tells KWOC News that the Poplar Bluff Athletic Department does not use outside companies to solicit donations on their behalf. Keith says that only he or their coaching staff will contact you if they are seeking donations for any athletic activity.

Anyone who has any doubt about any call requesting funds for the Athletic Department should contact Keith’s office.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN DUNKLIN COUNTY Route MM in Dunklin County will be reduced today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform bridge maintenance.

The work zone will be located between Route J and County Road 122.

MoDOT officials say that the work will take place from 7 am to 4 pm.

MAN FLOWN TO ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING WRECK IN WAYNE COUNTY

  A man has been flown to a St. Louis hospital following a wreck Tuesday afternoon in Wayne County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 43 year old William Singleton, of Mill Spring, was driving on Missouri Highway 49 near Ellsinore, when his vehicle ran off the road and struck a tree.

Singleton suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown by Air Evac to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis.

  MISSISSPPI COUNTY SHERIFF’S ATTORNEY SAYS HIS CLIENT WILL PLEAD NOT GUILTY TO CHARGES

  Updating a story we brought to you last week, an attorney for Mississippi County Sheriff Cory Hutcheson says that his client is looking forward to continuing his work and dedicating himself to the citizens of Mississippi County.

A spokesperson for Attorney General Josh Hawley tells KWOC news that Hutcheson is facing charges in two separate cases. In the first complaint, Hutcheson faces seven counts of forgery and seven counts of tampering with computer data.

In the second complaint, Hutcheson is charged with second degree assault, first degree robbery, and false declaration. Hutcheson is also accused of writing a probable cause statement claiming a woman kidnapped and assaulted Hutcheson's family member.

Hutcheson's attorney Scott Rosenblum says that his client will enter a plea of not guilty and that they are confident that once the facts come out, the prosecution of Sheriff Hutcheson will be shown to be misguided and politically motivated.

  TWO ARRESTED IN BUTLER COUNTY ON METH CHARGE

Two people were taken into custody Tuesday afternoon in Butler County on a felony meth charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 37 year old Ryan Melton, of Poplar Bluff, and 25 year old Alexandra Burke, of Parma, were each arrested at approximately 3:42 pm on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Both are also each facing a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, they were each transported to the Butler County Jail.

  TWO FACING BURGLARY CHARGES OUT OF EAST PRAIRIE

  Two East Prairie residents are facing burglary and other charges following an incident over the weekend.

Officials with the East Prairie Police Department tell KWOC News that on Saturday, officers responded to an area residence and learned that the residence had allegedly been burglarized by 46 year old Terry Dean and 40 year old Shawna Johnson.

Both Dean and Johnson were later taken into custody at Dean’s residence. Two juveniles at Dean’s residence had been reportedly made to stay inside the home all day without being fed and told not to answer the door. Both juveniles are safe and were unharmed.

Officers also found about a pound of marijuana at the residence.

Both Dean and Johnson have been charged with burglary 1st degree, domestic assault 4th, and child abuse or neglect of a child.

  BERNIE MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES

  A Bernie man is facing multiple felony charges following his arrest Tuesday afternoon.

According to authorities, 31 year old Gary Uhl was taken into custody in Stoddard County on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of prescription medication, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Uhl also reportedly had two misdemeanor warrants out of Butler County.

  PERMANENT MEDICINE DROP BOX SET UP AT DONIPHAN POLICE DEPARTMENT

  A drop box has been set up for residents in the Doniphan area to drop off expired and unused medication.

According to the Doniphan Police Department, the permanent drop box is available 24 hours a day in the police department lobby.

Officials say that needles, sharps, ointments, liquids, aerosol cans, inhalers, and thermometers cannot be accepted at the drop box.

MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON ASSAULT ON A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER CHARGEAn incident on Saturday has resulted in the arrest of an area man on an assault on a law enforcement officer charge.

KWOC News spoke with Chief Deputy Wes Popp with the Butler County Sheriff’s Department about the incident.

WESS POPP:

On Saturday afternoon at about 2:30 a call came in to the Butler County Sheriff's Department on a domestic in progress where a male identified as Shawn Burkett was beating up his girlfriend Cynthia Jones. Officers arrived and were met outside by Cynthia Jones who stated her boyfriend Shawn Burkett had been abusing her in the past so she was going to move and was in the process of packing all her personal belongings when Burkett showed up at the house. Burkett began beating Miss Jones about the face back of the head and arms leaving several wounds along with bleeding to the back of her head. Burkett fled the residence upon the officers arriving. As they were interviewing Miss Jones, another officer saw Burkett’s vehicle parked and as they were looking at the vehicle they see Burkett running back from the vehicle to the back of the house and made entry into the residence. Officers knocked on the door for him to open it up they had a warrant for his arrest for past incidences along with the current of the assault to the girlfriend. Jones refused, an officer reached through a broken window of the door pane to open up the door and as he entered Burkett threw a chair at the officer along with holding a small bat. Officers commanded him to drop the bat, which he did, it was then he turn and ran down the hallway where he was met by other officers taking him into custody without any further incident. Shawn Burkett is being housed at the Butler County Sheriff's Department for assault 2nd on a law enforcement officer, domestic assault 3rd, resisting arrest, and also a arrest warrant for burglary for $20,000.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY ON DRUG RELATED CHARGES A Poplar Bluff man was taken into custody Monday afternoon in Stoddard County on felony drug related charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 27 year old Michael Spencer was arrested shortly before 3 pm Monday on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance for oxycodone and hydrocodone.

Following the arrest, Spencer was held at the Stoddard County Jail.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT TO CAUSE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF STODDARD COUNTY ROAD Route H in Stoddard County will be closed today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews cam replace a culvert under the roadway.

According to MoDOT the closure will be located from County Road 660 to County Road 670.

Weather permitting, work is scheduled to take place today from 8 am to 4 pm.

POWER OUTAGE EFFECTED PARTS OF BUTLER AND STODDARD COUNTY MONDAY AFTERNOON Parts of eastern Butler County and western Stoddard County were without power Monday afternoon.

At around 2 pm a tree fell on a power line along County Road 275 in Stoddard County and knocked out power for about 2000 people in the Fisk and Dudley areas.

Power was restored just over an hour later.

AREA POLICE CELEBRATE NATIONAL PUBLIC SAFETY TELECOMMUNICATORS WEEK This week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators week and multiple area police departments are celebrating their communications departments.

Today through April 15th is the National Public Safety Telecommunicators week. It’s a week that’s set aside to recognize the men and women that answer the phone and the radio every day across this country for police, fire, and medical emergencies. Most folks don't realize it, but dispatchers are basically they're the first officer on the scene, the answer 9-1-1, they handle all records checks for wanted individuals, they also send all the messages and basically tie all the police departments and fire departments in together Nationwide into one web of agencies. Communications officers are one of the most important parts of any investigation, from the get-go they're the ones that get the information whether there's a weapon on scene whether there's a victim already that needs medical attention and basically make or break an investigation. Chief Communications Officer Kim Johnson and Assistant Chief Communications Officer Dave Williams along with the other officers at our Comm Center, they go through a yearly review or yearly continuing education, they also take numerous classes. The City of Poplar Bluff and County of Butler in general are very lucky that here at the Poplar Bluff Police Department we have one of the most professional telecommunication centers in the region or I’d put them up against anyone in the country. They come in every day, they do their job 7 days a week 24 hours a day, oftentimes missing holidays and special events with their family just like anyone in law enforcement does.

WAYNE COUNTY AUTHORITIES ASKING FOR INFORMATION IN CONNECTION TO VANDALISM IN THE PIEDMONT AREA Officials in Wayne County are asking for the public’s help following reports of vandalism Monday morning.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, several vehicles were vandalized and had their tires cut at Fir and 3rd Street in Piedmont during the early morning hours of Monday.

ELLSINORE MAN FACING GUN AND METHAMPHETAMINE CHARGESAn Ellsinore man is facing felony gun and drug charges in connection to his arrest on Friday night.

According to the Butler County Sheriff’s Department, 43 year old Jerry Davidson was taken into custody shortly before midnight Friday night on a felony charges of felony possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Davidson is also facing charges of resisting arrest by fleeing and possession of marijuana.

Following his arrest, he was taken to the Butler County Jail.

MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY PATROL OFFERING SUPPORT TO VICTIMS OF IMPAIRED DRIVERS The Missouri State Highway Patrol is offering assistance to victims of impaired drivers.

The Patrol’s “Filling a V.O.I.D. program” has provided information, support, and assistance to victims and their families since 1997.

If you, a member of your family, or a passenger in your vehicle have been injured by an impaired driver, you are eligible for assistance through the program. Pedestrians or their family members who have been involved in an impairment-related traffic crash also qualify.

In 2016, troopers and the Patrol’s civilian advocate assisted 13 children, 118 adults, and 18 elderly persons through the program.

WOMAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN CARTER COUNTY ON METHAMPHETAMINE CHARGE Authorities in Carter County have taken a Ste. Genevieve woman into custody on a felony meth charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 50 year old Joanna Mills was arrested early Saturday morning on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance methamphetamine.

She is also facing a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. Following the arrest, Mills was transported to the Carter County Jail.

VAN BUREN MAN FACING METHAMPHETAMINE CHARGE FOLLOWING ARREST A Van Buren man is facing a meth charge in connection to his arrest over the weekend.

According to the Carter County Sheriff’s Department, 25 year old Christopher Crafton was taken into custody shortly 1pm Friday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Crafton is also facing a charge of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION SEEKING PUBLIC INPUT ON CONSERVATION AREAS The Missouri Department of Conservation is seeking public input on how three Southeast Missouri conservation areas are important to Missourians.

According to the Department of Conservation, the agency is in the multi-year process of updating Conservation Area Management Plans.

Management plans for the Coon Island Conservation Area, Maintz Wildlife Preserve, and the Stephen J. Sun Conservation Area are open for public review until April 30th.

The MDC is asking for comments from recreational users, neighboring landowners, conservation groups, elected officials, government agencies, and other interested persons or groups. To make a comment on the area plans, go online to www.mdc.mo.gov/areaplans.

PERIODIC LANE CLOSURES TO CONTINUE ON ROUTE W IN BUTLER COUNTY THROUGH FRIDAY Continuing to follow a story we brought you last week, periodic lane closures will continue through this week in Butler County.

The closures will be due to the construction of the trail in the Route W area. The trail project is part of the Local Public Agencies Program.

The section of Route W affected is located from Business 67 to McLane Park in Poplar Bluff. Lane reductions will be in place as contractor crews pour concrete in the area.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through this Friday, from 7 am to 4:30 pm each day.

POPLAR BLUFF CHURCH TO HOST SECOND ANNUAL EGG-CESSIBLE EGG HUNT A Poplar Bluff church will be hosting an egg hunt this weekend.

The Second Annual Egg-cessible Egg Hunt will be held from 1 to 3 pm on Saturday, April 15th at West Side Church of God in Poplar Bluff.

Kids ages 12 and younger with special needs and developmental or physical disabilities are invited to the event and can also bring a friend to help during the hunt.

The event will also include a visit from the Easter Bunny and a goodie bag for all participants.

TWO ARRESTED IN BUTLER COUNTY ON FELONY DRUG CHARGESTwo Poplar Bluff residents were taken into custody early Thursday morning in Butler County on felony drug charges.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC news, 35 year old Cody Marks and 34 year old Miranda Gregory, both of Poplar Bluff, were arrested on a felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and possession of marijuana.

Both are also facing charges of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia, and Marks is being charged with driving while revoked.

Following their arrest, both were transported to the Butler County Jail.

SEVEN ARRESTS MADE DURING CHECKPOINT IN STODDARD COUNTY Seven arrests were made this past weekend during a sobriety checkpoint in Stoddard County.

Captain Jeffrey Vitale with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that the checkpoint was held on April 1st and a total of 234 vehicles were stopped during the four-hour operation.

Of the seven arrests, one was for driving while intoxicated and the other six were misdemeanor drug arrests.

Troopers also issued 16 summonses and 45 warnings during the operation.

SPRING BREAK TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK FOR POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL DISTRICT The Poplar Bluff School District is scheduled to go on Spring Break next week.

School officials say that spring break will run this year from Thursday, April 13th through Monday, April 17th.

Classes will then resume for students on Tuesday, April 18th.

A SUCCESS ARKANSAS MAN INJURED FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK A Success, Arkansas man was injured Wednesday night following a single vehicle wreck in Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 49 year old Jody Thomas, ran off the side of County Road 274 and hit a ditch.

Thomas suffered serious injuries in the wreck and taken by ambulance to a Poplar Bluff Hospital.

POPLAR BLUFF EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER ACCEPTING SCREENING APPOINTMENTS FOR HALF DAY PROGRAM The Poplar Bluff Early Childhood Center is accepting screening appointments for the Half Day program of the 2017-2018 school year.

If you are a parent in the Poplar Bluff R-1 School District and has a child who will be three or four years old on July 31st, you can call 573-785-6803 for more information about having your child screened for the program.

The next screening will be held by appointment only on Thursday, May 25th. Officials say that you must have your child’s social security number available when calling to make an appointment.

5th ANNUAL PULL TAB DRIVE SCHEDUED FOR SATURDAY The 5th Annual Pull Tab Drive for Brandon Scott has been scheduled for this weekend.

The drive will be held from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday at the American Legion on PP Highway in Poplar Bluff.

The event will feature a sale of bake goods; pull tab bracelets, a silent auction, and a raffle. All proceeds from the event will go to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis.

Brandon Scott was diagnosed with leukemia at 23 months old and has been saving tabs for the Ronald McDonald House for 13 years.
