MAJOR DISASTER DECELERATION REQUESTED FOR THREE SOUTHEAST MISSOURI COUNTIES

Missouri Governor Michael Parson has requested that President Trump approve a major disaster declaration for 13 counties in the state, including three in Southeast Missouri.

Governor Parson tells KWOC News that the declaration is for Missouri to provide federal assistance in response to devastating flooding that began March 11th. Southeast Missouri counties in the declaration request include Pemiscot, New Madrid, and Mississippi counties.

Governor Parson is requesting public assistance for the 13 total counties, so local governments and qualifying nonprofit agencies may seek federal assistance for reimbursement of emergency response and recovery costs, including repair and replacement costs for damaged roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure.

The Governor said he expects the request to be expanded to include additional counties once floodwaters recede and full damage assessments can be conducted.

The Governor is also requesting that the U.S. Small Business Administration assist businesses, homeowners, and renters in these counties with low-interest loans. Those affected by the flooding are encouraged to continue documenting losses by photographing damage and retaining all receipts.
