CHURCH IN RIPLEY COUNTY CATCHES FIRE OVER THE WEEKEND 

A Church in Ripley County caught fire on Sunday, destroying the building. 

Logan Creek Fire Chief Terry Slayton tells KWOC News that the fire had completely spread throughout the building by the time firefighters had arrived at the scene, the entire structure burning and falling down. 

Several departments aided in containing the flame, including the Doniphan, Purman, and Oxly fire departments, and a cause for the fire is currently under investigation.

BUTLER COUNTY COURT CASE FOR POPLAR BLUFF CITY PROPERTY PURCHASE SET 

A court case for the purchase of property by the city of Poplar Bluff has been set. 

The city plans to purchase property on Shebly road for building a new police department, with plans of other uses, and possible re-sale of the property. 

However, on November 13th, Poplar Bluff attorney Robert Smith halted the purchase, stating that a third class city cannot purchase land with the intent to resale. 

Poplar Bluff City Representatives will appear in a Butler County court for a review of the purchase halt on December 9th.

ARRESTS IN STODDARD COUNTY ON DRUG AND TAMPERING CHARGES 

Two arrests were reported in Stoddard County on drug and tampering charges. 

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 43 year old Chad Goza, of Cape Girardeau, and 29 year old Deanna Latham, of Sikeston, were both booked on possession of a controlled substance except 35 grams or less of marijuana/synthetic cannabinoid, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. 

They were also charged on tampering with an airplane/motorboat – 1st degree. 

Goza’s bond is $25k cash only, and Latham’s bond is set at $50k cash only, and both remained in custody following their arrests.

TWO WAREHOUSE FIRES REPORTED IN CITY OF PORTAGEVILLE 

Two warehouse fires were reported over the weekend in the city of Portageville. 

According to the Portageville Fire Department, the first fire reported was on Saturday at a cotton warehouse, where heavy smoke was reported coming from inside the building. The cause of the fire was some cotton bales that had caught fire. 

The second report came in on Sunday, another warehouse which stored cotton seeds, where the entire building was ablaze. The warehouse was destroyed in the fire, and it took the department ten hours to put it out. A cause has not been determined.

FATALITY REPORTED FOLLOWING VEHICLE CRASH IN GREENE COUNTY 

A fatality was reported in Greene County on Sunday following a vehicle accident. 

According to the Arkansas State Police, the crash occurred on US Route 69, where the vehicle ran off the road and hit an embankment, causing the vehicle to flip and land upside down. 

A passenger of the vehicle, 28 year old Deanna Guthrie, of Paragould, was killed in the crash, and the driver of the vehicle received injuries.  

Guthrie’s body was sent to a Paragould Morgue, and the driver of the vehicle was transported to a Jonesboro hospital.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY ON MULTIPLE FELONY WARRANTS 

A Poplar Bluff resident was taken into custody in Stoddard County on Saturday on multiple felony warrants. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 26 year old Alex Govoni, of Poplar Bluff, was arrested on two felony butler county warrants, a felony Stoddard county warrant, and a Poplar Bluff police department warrant. 

He was also charged on possession of a controlled substance – marijuana, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. 

Govoni was transported to the Stoddard County Jail following his arrest.

MODERATE INJURIES REPORTED FOLLOWING VEHICLE WRECK IN STODDARD COUNTY 

Moderate injuries were reported in Stoddard County following a vehicle crash on Saturday. 

The Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that the crash occurred on County Road 627, at County Road 640, 1 mile south of Dexter, where a vehicle failed to negotiate a turn, running off the right side of the roadway and overturning. 

An occupant of the vehicle received moderate injuries, and was taken by ambulance to a Cape Girardeau hospital.
