INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY FOLLOWING DEATH OF YOUNG CHILD

Authorities in the Missouri bootheel are investigating after the death of a young child from Steele over the weekend.

According to authorities, a four year old child was taken to a Pemiscot County hospital on Sunday, where the child was pronounced dead.

Multiple agencies are involved in the investigation, including the Steele Police Department and the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office.

POPLAR BLUFF MULES WIN 2ND STRAIGHT SHOWDOWN

The Poplar Bluff Mules have claimed their second straight Poplar Bluff Showdown championship.

The Mules defeated Jonesboro in the Showdown Final on Saturday 69-68. Fayetteville beat Humboldt, 72-55 in the third place game.

For the Consolation Championship, Christian County beat Kirby, 52-48. In the Seventh Place game, Memphis Central beat Kauffman, 92-40.

The Mules’ Dominque and Joseph Hardimon were both selected to the Showdown All-Tournament team.

VALENTINES FOR VETERANS CONCERT TO BE HELD IN MID FEBRUARY

A date has been set for the 2019 Valentines for Veterans concert.

According to the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center, the concert, featuring Rodney Atkins with special guest Tiera, will be held at 6 pm on Friday, February 15th at the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff.

Veterans may contact the VA Voluntary Services at 573-778-4499 for complimentary tickets or more information. Tickets will be available starting on Thursday.

HIGHWAY PATROL ENCOURAGES MOTORISTS TO BE SAFE OVER WHILE CELEBRATING THE NEW YEAR

The New Year is quickly approaching and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding everyone who is planning to get out and celebrate tonight to drive safely.

According to the Highway Patrol, nine people were killed last year during the New Year’s holiday counting period. There were a total of 845 traffic crashes which injured 291 people.

If you are driving to a New Year’s gathering, remember to buckle up and obey all traffic laws. If your plans include alcohol, remember to designate a sober driver or take a taxi.

EARTHQUAKE SHAKES PARTS OF NORTHEAST ARKANSAS AND SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A small earthquake shook parts of the Missouri Arkansas border on Friday.

According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 2.3 earthquake was recorded at 5:43 pm Friday evening.

The earthquake was located one mile southeast of Elm Store, Arkansas and 48 miles west south west of Poplar Bluff.

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN ARRESTED ON FELONY CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE CHARGE

A Poplar Bluff woman was taken into custody over the weekend on a felony controlled substance charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 27 year old Ashley Hicks was arrested early Saturday morning on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance.

Hicks is also facing charges of possession of marijuana and driving while intoxicated.

Following the arrest, Hicks was held at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.
