WRECK NEAR VAN BUREN LEAVES ONE DEAD

A Monday morning wreck near Van Buren resulted in the death of an Ellsinore woman.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the wreck occurred at around 11 am on Eastbound Highway 60 and Route ZZ in Carter County.

A vehicle, driven by 86 year old Harriett Sylvester, reportedly traveled into the path of an oncoming freightliner.

Sylvester was killed in the wreck. No injuries were listed for the driver of the freightliner.

POPLAR BLUFF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NAMED NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL

A Poplar Bluff elementary school has been chosen for a national honor.

The U.S. Department of Education has announced that Lake Road Elementary has been named a 2018 National Blue Ribbon School, the highest honor an educational institution can achieve.

The recognition is based on a school's overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

A total of 349 schools nationwide were chosen for the honor this year which also includes Richland Elementary School in Essex.

CHILD INJURED AFTER BEING RUN OVER BY TRAILER IN SIKESTON

A seven year old child was injured after being struck by a trailer this past weekend in Sikeston.

Assistant Chief James McMillen with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that the driver said that while trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle he inadvertently pulled the trailer onto the corner of the intersection.

The trailer came into contact with the child as he waited for the parade to start. The boy had injuries sustained from the trailer rolling over him and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. He was later released. The boy’s grandmother said the trailer had run over her feet as well.

McMillen says that there was no evidence of any crime and all indication was that this was just an unfortunate accident.

POPLAR BLUFF CHEERLEADING KIDDIE CAMP TO BEGIN TODAY

A Poplar Bluff Cheerleading Kiddie Camp for future cheerleaders ages 3 to 6th grade is set to begin today.

The camp will be held at the Poplar Bluff High School Auxiliary gym on today from 5 to 6:30 pm, as well as 5 to 6 pm on October 3rd and 4th. Registration will begin at 5 pm this evening.

The cost is $25 per child and will include a T-shirt.

All Kiddie Camp Cheerleaders will perform at either the Freshman or Junior Varsity football games on Monday, October 8th.

MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGES IN STODDARD COUNTY

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested a Southeast Missouri man on drug charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 50 year old Bobby Spears, of Oak Ridge, was taken into custody Monday morning on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance for methamphetamine and oxycodone.

Following the arrest, Spears was held at the Stoddard County Jail.

BUTLER COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR PIPE REPLACEMENT

Route HH in Butler County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a pipe under the roadway.

MODOT officials tell KWOC News that the closure will be located between County Roads 334 and 202.

Work is scheduled to be performed from 8 am to 3 pm.
