ARKANSAS WOMAN KILLED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI WRECK

An Arkansas woman died over the weekend in a single vehicle wreck in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 46 year old Jessie Miller, of Osceola, Arkansas, was driving on Northbound Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County, Saturday night, when her vehicle ran off the side of the roadway. Officials say Miller was ejected during the wreck.

She was pronounced dead at the scene near Mile Marker 8 by Pemiscot County Coroner Jim Brimhall.

 

APPROXIMATELY 150 AREA CHILDREN INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN POPLAR BLUFF SHOP WITH A HERO EVENT

Over 100 area children will be participating in the Poplar Bluff Shop with a Hero event this weekend.

David Sutton with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News, that approximately 150 area children have been invited to shop for Christmas gifts Saturday morning at Wal-Mart. The kids will be accompanied by local law enforcement, firefighters, EMS, and members of our military.

The event is hosted by the Fraternal Order of Police and this will be its 23rd year in Poplar Bluff.

 

MAN WANTED AFTER SHOTS FIRED IN SIKESTON

Authorities in Sikeston say a warrant has been issued for an area man after an incident were shots were fired into a vehicle over the weekend.

According to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, at around 6:45 am Saturday morning, officers responded to a call of shots fired. Following an investigation, it was learned that a Sikeston man was driving his vehicle in the area of Branum Street when it was hit by gunfire.

31 year old Maurice Newman, of Sikeston, was alleged by the victim to have blocked the road with the vehicle he was driving and began firing a weapon at the victim. The victim in this case was not shot and had no injuries.

Arrest warrants have been issued for Newman for assault 1st, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Bond was set at $200,000, cash only.

 

SOLDIER’S EARLY RETURN SURPRISES DAUGHTER DURING ASSEMBLY AT POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL

A Poplar Bluff Middle School student got an early Christmas surprise during an assembly held last week.

Fifth grader Aaryn Johnson was listening to Assistant Principal Angie Jackson give a speech about expectations on Friday when Johnson’s father, Sergeant 1st Class Terry White of the Missouri Army National Guard, walked in and gave Aaryn a hug.

White last saw Aaryn the day after Christmas last year before he was deployed to the Arabian Peninsula of Qater.

COMMUNITY BRIEFING ON FLOOD RECOVERY SCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEEK IN CARTER COUNTY

A Community briefing has been scheduled for next week in Carter County.

According to Carter County Sheriff Richard Stephens, the Carter County Board of Commissioners will be hosting a community briefing regarding flood recovery at 6 pm on Tuesday, December 19th.

The briefing will be held at the Van Buren Youth and Community Center.

 

BURN BANS ENACTED DUE TO FIRE RISKS

Multiple burn bans have been enacted across the area due to risks of fire.

According to a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by the National Weather Service, there will be a limited fire weather risk across southeast Missouri today and tomorrow. Dry vegetation combined with a dry air mass and gusty winds through midday are the reasons for the risk.

Multiple communities have enacted burn bans, including Carter County and Charleston in Southeast Missouri and Greene County in Northeast Arkansas.

 

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SET FOR TODAY IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

East and Westbound Route 412 in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews repair the concrete in the crossover.

According to MoDOT, the crossover is located at Route B and Route Z.

Weather permitting, work will begin this morning at 8 am, and will remain up overnight. The work zone will then be taken down at 8 am tomorrow morning.
