JONESBORO GOLDEN HURRICANES WIN POPLAR BLUFF SHOWDOWN Jonesboro High School Golden Hurricanes are the new champions of the Poplar Bluff Basketball Showdown.

Jonesboro defeated last year’s champion Kenwood High School, 70 to 54 in Thursday’s final. The Poplar Bluff Mules took 4th place in the tournament after falling to Vashon 85 to 60.

In the Consolation championship, Humboldt beat Memphis Central 61 to 59. In the 7th Place game, Cordova defeated Liberty Tech 71 to 66.

  POPLAR BLUFF MULE WILLIE LUCAS NAMED TO ALL TOURNAMENT TEAM AT THE POPLAR BLUFF SHOWDOWN Poplar Bluff boys’ basketball player Willie Lucas has had a pretty good week at the Poplar Bluff Showdown.

After scoring his 1000th career point on Tuesday and winning the Three-Point Contest on Wednesday, Lucas has also been named to the All-Tournament team for the 30th Annual Poplar Bluff Basketball Showdown.

Joining Lucas on the All-Tournament team, are three members from the champion Jonesboro Golden Hurricanes, Marquis Eaton, Desi Sills, and Ben Harvey, along with Manny Patterson from Kenwood, Levi Stockard III from Vashon, and Jarred Walker from Humboldt.

  HIGHWAY PATROL ENCOURAGES MOTORISTS TO BE SAFE OVER THE NEW YEAR HOLIDAY WEEKEND The New Year is upon us and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding everyone who is planning to get out and celebrate this weekend to drive safely.

According to the Highway Patrol, seven people were killed last year during the New Year’s holiday counting period. There were a total of 954 traffic crashes which injured 364 people.

If you are driving to a New Year’s gathering, remember to buckle up and obey all traffic laws. If your plans include alcohol, remember to designate a sober driver or take a taxi.

  GOVERNOR NIXON APPOINTS NEW NEW MADRID COUNTY ASSESSOR Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has appointed a new assessor for New Madrid County.

Governor Nixon appointed Jacob Johnson to the position, which had became vacant upon the resignation of former Assessor Ronnie Simmons.

Johnson was elected as Assessor in November 2016, but under the Missouri law regarding assessors, normally would not have taken office until September 1st, 2017.

Johnson has served as an appraiser for the New Madrid County Assessor’s Office since 1997.

  POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED IN BUTLER COUNTY ON MULTIPLE WARRANTS Authorities in Butler County have arrested a Poplar Bluff man on multiple warrants.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 36 year old Jason Trinkler was taken into custody Thursday morning on warrants from Laclede County, the Carter County Sheriff’s Office, and the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

Following the arrest, Trinkler was held in the Butler County Jail.

  KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS TO HOST NEW YEARS EVE PARTY THIS WEEKEND The Knights of Columbus will be hosting a New Years Eve party this weekend.

The party Saturday night will feature food, music, and a cash bar for only $20 per person.
